Mary E. Hanson

Mary E. Hanson, 79, of Proctor died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

She was born in Chicago on July 30, 1921, to James and Mary Morton Buckley. Mary married Arthur Hanson on May 10, 1941, in Chicago. She left the Chicago area in 1947 and moved to Proctor with her husband and two young children. Mary had varied interests and talents including painting, calligraphy, gardening and in her early days in Chicago danced in a dance troupe. She also very much loved spending time with and caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary had been a member of Our Saviors Evangelical Lutheran Church for 25 years, where she had been a member of its choir, Dorcas Circle, WELCA and other church guilds.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Charlotte.

Mary is survived by sons Dennis (Gail) of Fountain Hills, Ariz., Donald (Susan) of Cloquet, Curtis (Brenda) of Duluth and Kent (Kelly) of Menominee, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Memorials preferred. Arrangements by Williams-Loebermeier Funeral Home.

John R. Carlstrom

John R. Carlstrom, 72, of Davenport, Fla., died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, in Orlando Regional Medical Center, after a brief illness.

John was born in Two Harbors. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He worked as a business manager in Duluth before moving to Davenport in 1994.

He was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He was also a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Kissimmee, Fla.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lee; sons Thomas of Minneapolis and David of Lake Helen, Fla.; a daughter, Carol Lee Johnson of Olympia, Wash.; a brother, Iver Carlstrom of Two Harbors; sisters Dorothy Cook of Minneapolis and Alice Dempster of Bullhead, Ariz.; and five grandchildren.

Services were in Trinity Lutheran Church in Kissimmee.

Louella Mae Bennett

Louella Mae Bennett, 81, of Harlingen, Texas, passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2001, in the Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Lou was born July 30, 1919, in Crete, Ill. She married Karl F. Bennett, March 9, 1949. They were the former owners of the Little Indian Resort on Fish Lake, now the Blue Max Resort.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl on June 24, 1996.

She is survived by her good friends, Art and Joanne Nichols of Eveleth.

Dorothy Agnes Vercelline

Dorothy Agnes Vercelline, 84, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in the Lee's Summit Hospital in Lee's Summit, Mo.

She was born in Duluth on Jan. 14, 1917. Dorothy was a nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth before moving to Missouri in 1976.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Mrs. Isabelle Malkovich.

She is survived by her sisters, Mary Patnaude of Coleraine and Barbara Roberts of Monrovia, Calif.; a son, James R. Vercelline of Clovis, N.M.; daughters Mary Scammacca of Lee's Summit and Kathryn Vercelline of Rome, Italy; a brother-in-law, Ed Vercelline of Duluth; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorial Mass: 10 a.m. today in Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church, Lee's Summit.

William Joseph Gallo III

William Joseph Gallo III, 33, of Wellington Fla., died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in the Boca Raton Community Hospital.

He was born in West Palm Beach, Fla., attended St. Juliana Catholic School and was a graduate of Cardinal Newman High School.

Mr. Gallo was a devoted husband to his wife, Kelly L. Gallo, and father to his children, Alexander Joseph Gallo of Millersville, Md., and Madison Leigh Gallo of Wellington, Fla. Also surviving is his mother, Elizabeth Cook of Duluth, employed at Miller-Dwan for many years; his father, William Joseph Gallo Jr. of West Palm Beach; sisters Angela Marie Gallo of Charlotte, N.C., Seabrin Britt and Lindsay Gallo, both of West Palm Beach; brothers Keith Britt and Nicholas Gallo, both of West Palm Beach and Ryan Britt of Duluth; his maternal grandmother, Jeanne Cook and paternal grandmother, Joan Gallo, both of West Palm Beach; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and family by marriage.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today in the Quattlebaum-Holleman-Burse Funeral Home, 1201 S. Olive Ave., West Palm Beach, with a scripture service at 7: 15 p.m. Funeral Mass at 9: 15 a.m. Saturday in St. Juliana Catholic Church in West Palm Beach. Interment to follow at Queen of Peace cemetery, Royal Palm Beach.

A. Jeanne Nossum

A. Jeanne Nossum, of Bainbridge Island, Wash., died peacefully Friday, June 15, 2001, just 15 days short of her 87th birthday, at the home of her daughter on Bainbridge Island.

Jeanne was born July 1, 1914, in Superior, to Clara and Oscar Stevens. She and her husband, Stanley, spent the early years of their marriage in Duluth, where Jeanne was employed by the Coolerator Co. until it closed. Following a move to Bainbridge Island in 1955, Jeanne worked for the Washington State Ferry System as a food service worker and enjoyed the experience of serving on the ferry, Evergreen State, on its maiden voyage.

In 1960, she and Stanley moved to southern California, where they spent the next 25 years. During that time Jeanne was a foster parent to several foster children and in 1995, on the occasion of her 81st birthday, was honored by the state of California for her work in foster care.

In her later years she traveled extensively, including a trip to Norway at age 80, where she rode a bobsled on wheels down the Olympic course in Lillehammer.

She returned to Bainbridge Island three years ago. She had a true servant's heart and in spite of her failing vision, continued to minister to others whenever possible, including being a telephone visitor for Lutheran Family Services. She was a sweet fragrance to all who knew her and was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Nothing pleased her more than spending time with her family.

Jeanne is survived by her son, James and daughter-in-law, Marge, of Sandy, Ore.; her daughter, Vivian Burnett and son-in-law, William, of Bainbridge Island; a sister, Grace Erickson of Duluth; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be in July with burial next to her husband in Tahoma National cemetery. Remembrances may be sent to City Church of Arroyo Grande, P.O. Box 1410, Arroyo Grande, Calif.

Maradee Joan Nelson Greene

Maradee Joan Nelson Greene, 71, formerly of Proctor died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, in Seattle.

She was born Jan. 14, 1929, in Duluth to Carl Oscar and Nellie Nelson. She married Robert Fredrick Greene of Morgan Park and moved to Alaska while it was still a frontier, before statehood. After her husband died, she moved back to Proctor with her daughters, Stacy and Roberta Greene. She then remarried and started an Arabian horse farm in Fall Creek, Wis. She had her third child, Amy Gershgol.

She enjoyed horses, cats, calligraphy and boogie-woogie music. Her favorite dance was "Pushing the Penny."

She was preceded in death by sisters June Lois Seguin and Lorraine Louise Hartung; her parents, Carl Oscar Nelson and Nell Martinson Nelson; and her husband, Robert Fredrick Greene.

She is survived by three daughters, Stacy Ellen Greene of Brooklyn, N.Y., Roberta Lorraine Greene of Seattle and Amy Diane Gershgol Wuensch of Madison, Wis.; her granddaughter, Camille Lauren Wuensch; and son-in-law Martin Imbach. She is also survived by Suzzanne, Kevin, Heather and Michael Vegar; Ronald, Kim, Jenna and Katie Seguin; William, Ashley and Josh Seguin; Terry Lee Seguin and Lisa Wold, all of Duluth.

She is missed by all for her charm, wit and grand sense of fun. We love you Maradee.

Services: Private services were held.

Richard W. Howden

Richard Whalen Howden, 81, of Cannon Falls died Saturday, June 9, 2001, in Cannon Falls.

He was born March 13, 1920, in Duluth, the son of Axel E. and Tessa (Whalen) Howden. He graduated from Morgan Park High School in 1940, and later attended the University of Miami for one year. He worked at Philbrick Funeral Home in Miami for five years. He married Pauline S. Varnedoe Oct. 26, 1945, in Miami. He worked for the Florida State Highway Patrol and was a member of the Florida Police Union and of the Dade County Florida Chiefs of Police. He then worked with the Miami Sheriff's Department as Superintendent of the Fingerprint Bureau and Homicide Investigations. From 1949 until his retirement in 1985, he worked at the Equitable Life Insurance Co. as the Division Claims Manager. He moved to Cannon Falls in 1987.

He was preceded in death by his wife on July 13, 1983; twin brother, Robert, and brother, William (aka Billy Regan); and a sister, Mary Pat Carlson of Cloquet.

He is survived by his children, Theresa (Steve) Clare, Paula (Bob) Baskette, Richard II (Kim), William, Marguerite (John) Goulet and John (Betty); 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, John of Duluth; a sister, Marguerite Lamprecht of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial Mass: 10 a.m. today in St. Pius V Catholic Church, Cannon Falls. Interment follows in Fort Snelling National cemetery. Memorials preferred to St. Pius V Catholic Church. Arrangements by Lundberg Funeral Home, (507) 263-4246.

William A. "Bill" Kinnunen

William A. "Bill" Kinnunen, 74, of Kelly Circle died Saturday, June 9, 2001.

He was born July 29, 1926 in Duluth. Bill was a 1944 graduate of Duluth Central High School. He was a veteran of the Navy during World War II, serving in the South Pacific.

Bill married Dorothy Engebritson in 1949 in Duluth. He worked for Minnesota Power in Duluth and transferred to Eveleth in 1956, retiring from there in 1989. Upon retirement, Bill and his wife returned to Duluth. He was an avid golfer, bowler and gardener.

Besides his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a sister, Viola.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy: daughters Kristine (Larry) Saverslak of Dublin, Ga., Jane Kinnunen of Duluth, Nancy (Mike) Kinnunen-Maxim of Duluth, Mary Beth (Brandan) Curto of Avon, Minn., and Susan (Gary) Soya of Amarillo, Texas; a son, William Jr. (Nadya) of Roseville, Minn.; a brother, John of Rhinelander, Wis.; a sister, Maymi (Ron) Matuschak of Duluth; 17 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. funeral services Thursday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel, with Father Jon Wild officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery, Duluth. Services entrusted to Johnson Mortuary.

Immediately following burial, a gathering of family and friends will be held at St. Benedict Catholic Church, 1419 St. Benedict St.

William "Bill" Nelson

William "Bill" Nelson, 64, of Highland Street died Sunday, June 10, 2001, in his residence.

He was born in Duluth to Leonard "Red" and Barbara (Schmitz) Nelson on June 12, 1936. He attended Denfeld High School and the University of Minnesota Duluth. Bill was a Air Force veteran, serving during the Vietnam War and the Korean War. After retiring from the Air Force in 1981, he worked at Menard's for 10 years.

Bill was a member of the former Good Shepherd Catholic Church. He loved fishing, hunting, his deer shack and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a friend to everyone, and will be sadly missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard "Red" and Barbara (Schmitz) Nelson; and brothers Jack (Gayle) and Thomas (Carol) Nelson.

He is survived by his wife, Ann (Opack) Nelson of Duluth; a son, Aaron (Cheryl) Nelson of Wrenshall; granddaughters Holly, Stacy and Megan; a brother, Gary Nelson of St. Paul; sisters Annie Jerome of Oakdale, Minn., and Edie (Todd) Koneczny of Duluth; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today with a 6 p.m. Rosary recitation in Foley Chapel. Mass of Christian burial at 3 p.m. Thursday in St. James Catholic Church, the Rev. Charles Flynn officiating. Internment in Oneota cemetery. Military honor will be accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St.

Wayne A. Langlee

Wayne A. Langlee, 70, of Duluth passed away Monday, June 11, 2001, in his home surrounded by his family.

He was born Jan. 8, 1931, in Superior to Olaf and Lillian Langlee. He worked as a lineman for Minnesota Power. He was a former member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a member of St. James Catholic Church. He was an avid baseball fan but especially loved the Duluth-Superior Dukes. He was also a Little League coach. He could always seem to make others laugh and had a great sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his infant son, Timothy in 1958.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen; sons Jon (Patty) of Duluth, Christopher (Julie) of Duluth; a daughter, Amy Hargraves of Duluth; a brother, James (Margaret) of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Gloria (David) DeLauter of Fort Collins, Colo.; five grandchildren, Brian, Kyle, Sarah and Chase Langlee and Nicholas Hargraves; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. James Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Charlie Flynn and the Rev. Father Jim Tobolski officiating. Interment with military honors accorded by Duluth VFW Honor Guard in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.
