Richard Ray Lueck
Richard Ray Lueck, 42, Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of Duluth, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, in Port Charlotte.
He was born and raised in Duluth and was a graduate of Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; son Tyler John; and daughter Kyle Marie Lueck, all of Port Charlotte; his parents, Allen and Lois Lueck; and a brother, John (Cheryl), all of Duluth.
Memorial Service: 11 a.m. Saturday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Duluth, with a luncheon to follow.
Vern A. Selseth
Vern A. Selseth, 91, of Duluth passed away Monday, July 23, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center.
He was born Oct. 30, 1907, in Duluth to Nels and Hattie Selseth. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1926. He worked for 26 years with the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway. He worked with the Salvation Army for 50 years.
His joy of life had been helping others. Since 1958 he had been in ministry, with churches in Hillsdale, Sheldon and a few smaller towns in Wisconsin. His last pastorate was at the United Methodist Church in Meadowlands. He also started a church service in Gateway Towers until he became unable to take care of it. He also enjoyed writing.
He was preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings.
He is survived by his nephews, Donald Frykman of Cottage Grove, Minn., and William (Donna) Frykman of Clinton, Tenn.; and a niece, Joyce Vuckovich of Dayton, Ohio.
Vern will be included in a memorial service at Viewcrest Health Center on Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 2 p.m.
Martha L. Hammer
Martha L. Hammer, 85, died Monday, July 23, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
Martha was a lifelong Duluth resident, residing at East Fifth Street for more than 40 years. Recently Martha was a resident of Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
She was born Sept. 12, 1915, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Brozic. She married
Arthur O. Hammer in 1936, in Duluth. Martha and Art moved to the East End in 1954 and began renting rooms in their home to students attending the University of Minnesota Duluth. Hundreds of students passed through their home over the next 30 years.
Martha was an active member of several garden clubs. She also collected many antiques through her estate sales business.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Art; parents; sisters Mary and Ann; and brothers Joe, Wally, Tony and Cyril.
Surviving are her son, Donald (Carrie) of Middleton, Wis.; three grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.
A private family reception will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home.
Mildred H. "Millie" Rohsfeld
Mildred H. "Millie" Rohsfeld, 76, formerly of Proctor died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born April 2, 1925, in Courtney, N.D., to Michael and Frieda Liegman. She grew up and attended school there, moving to Duluth in the mid-1940s. She had been a Duluth and Proctor resident since then. Millie worked for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle during World War II and at the Pekin Cafe and VanVick Box Co. in Duluth. She married
Walter G. Rohsfeld on Aug. 31, 1947, in Fosston, Minn.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Proctor and a former member of St. Paul's American Lutheran Church, now Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church. In earlier years, she was a member of the International Woodworkers Union Local 29.
Millie enjoyed roller skating, fishing, gardening and all outdoor activities, especially the fishing opener with the family at Fish Lake. It was very important to Millie and Walter that all family members be together at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter, in 1991; and a sister, Myrtle Bishop.
She is survived and will be deeply missed by daughters Rosemary (Dick) Royer of Saginaw and Sharon Saarela of Duluth; a son, Rick (Barb) Rohsfeld of Eagan, Minn.; a sister, Marion LaVoi of Fosston; a brother, Harold "Ike" (Annie) Liegman of Wahkon, Minn.; grandchildren Mark (Tina) Royer, Rhonda (Rob) Anderson, Jeff (Bobbie Jo) Seth, David (Kate) Seth, Wayne Hakala and Stephanie Rohsfeld; six great-grandchildren; and many other loving relatives and friends.

Thomas W. Wiemann Sr.
Thomas W. Wiemann Sr., passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2001, in Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas.
He was born July 21, 1927, in La Moure, N.D. Thomas was Navy retired and had an accounting business in Duluth. He graduated from the Duluth School of Business and became a licensed public accountant. He lived in Solon Springs until he retired to Harlingen in 1985.
He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Fleet Reserve Association and the American Legion, where he had held numerous leadership positions in Duluth.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Samantha Wiemann; a son, Jon; sisters Margaret Smith, Genevieve Bates, Jeanette Wiemann; and a brother, William.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; children Thomas Jr. (Connie) Wiemann of Dallas, and JoEllen (Bill) Benson, Gary (Barb) Wiemann and Andrew (Lynn) Wiemann, all of Duluth; grandchildren Thomas (Chuck) Wiemann, Leigh Ann Wiemann, Bill Benson III, Michael Benson, Carrie Wiemann and Andrea Wiemann; and great-grandchildren Gabriela and Samantha Wiemann.
Visitation: noon to 9 p.m. today with family receiving friends from 4-9 p.m. and service at 2 p.m. Saturday in Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 710 Ed Carey Dr., Harlingen, TX 78550. Interment in Ft. Snelling National cemetery at a later date.
Theresa Catherine Lowney Stokes Mrozik
Theresa Catherine Lowney Stokes Mrozik, 87, passed into the hands of our Lord on Friday, July 13, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center Hospice Unit, surrounded by her loving family.
Theresa was born Aug. 20, 1913, in Lake Linden, Mich., to Patrick and Margaret Lowney. When she was a young girl her family moved to Duluth. She married
her first husband, Edmund W. Stokes, Sept. 24, 1935, and for a short time they relocated to Toledo, Ohio, before returning to Duluth. Theresa retired in 1977 after spending the last 25 of her working years at Kresge's (later known as Jupiter). She was awarded a diamond ring, of which she was very proud. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Eagles Aerie 79 and a member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Ladies Rosary Society.
In 1982, she married
Robert Mrozik. Bob died just 14 months into their marriage. Theresa was once again a widow. At age 78, however, Theresa and a friend from her youth, Jim Meehan, were reintroduced and spent the next several years in companionship and traveling to near and far lands. When Jim passed away in 1993, Theresa spent her remaining years at Greysolon Plaza, where she made so many wonderful friends. She was a kind and gentle lady who spent her lifetime putting the needs of others before her own. She will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Edmund and Robert; her brothers, Joseph and Elmer (Smiley) Lowney; sisters-in-law Hazel Lowney and Delores Lowney; and her lifetime friend and traveling companion, James L. "Puggy" Meehan.
She is survived by her son, Robert (Susan) Stokes of Esko; a daughter, Janice Luke of Duluth; a brother, Gerald (Mary) Lowney of Duluth; a sister, Betty (Jack) House of Duluth; grandchildren Lori Luke, Linda (Mark) Lanigan, Gary (Patti) Luke, Steven Luke, David (Kristi) Stokes, Sheri Stokes and Melissa (Aaron) Martineau; great-grandchildren Jamie and Jared, Lexi and Nicholas, and Scott and Steven.
Service: 10 a.m. today in St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Mary's Star of the Sea (designate Holy Innocents Adoration Chapel), or to St. Mary's Foundation (designate Hospice).
Martha Toivonen Holappa
Centenarian
Martha Toivonen Holappa, 100, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center.
Martha was born April 5, 1901, in Finland to John and Hilda Toivonen. In 1911, her family arrived and settled in Minneapolis, where she attended school and graduated from North High School in 1919. She was married
April 4, 1924, in Minneapolis to Frank Holappa. Shortly after her marriage she moved to Duluth where she was a homemaker and raised her family.
Martha was active with the University United Methodist Church, Duluth Women's Club, Ridgeview Country Club, Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and Aad Temple Shrine Honored Ladies. She was an avid golfer, bowler and bridge player. She was past president of Economy Motors.
She will be remembered for her pleasant disposition, laughing at her own mistakes and being loved by all who knew her. She was a longtime resident of Chateau DuLac and former resident of St. Ann's.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank, in 1961; a sister, Anni Niemi; brothers Lauri and Arvi Toivonen; and a grandson, William Gordon Holappa.
She is survived by a son, Frank (Diane) of Lake Nebagamon; a daughter, Virginia Holappa (Roger) Emerson of Sun City, Ariz.; grandchildren Lynn Hall, Susan (Rick Horn) Holappa, Cynthia Holappa, David (Chris) Holappa, Stephen Holappa, Martha (Chris) Byrnes, Kay Emerson (Paul) Zimmerman and Nancy Emerson (Harry) Cushing; great-grandchildren Emily Davis, Shockley Hall, Holmes Hall, Molly and Kory Byrnes, Diane Byrnes-Johnson, Steven and Sarah Holappa, Jonathan Roy, Jennifer Emerson-Roy, and Rebecca, Parker and Danielle Cushing; and a sister, Helen Ansok of Saratoga, Calif.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel and continues from noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in University United Methodist Church, the Rev. Elton Brown officiating. Ellen Marie Wentzlaff
Ellen Marie Wentzlaff, 86, of Midway Road died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at home.
She was born May 13, 1915, in Duluth to Carl and Wallborg Sophia (Anderson) Seehus. She was a 1933 graduate of Denfeld High School and attended two years of nursing school. She married
William A. Wentzlaff on Nov. 11, 1937, in Dubuque, Iowa. She was employed as a registered nurse at Nopeming Nursing Home, where she retired in 1980 after 22 years of service. She also was employed at St. Luke's hospital, the former Arlington Nursing Home, Birches Nursing Home and did private in-home nursing.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she was active in its Martha Circle, altar guild, senior club and also taught Sunday school. She was a member of Pike Lake Senior Citizens and AARP.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Victor Seehus; sisters Anna Modean and Mardel Pelican; and her husband, Bill, on Aug. 26, 1990.
Survivors include her daughters, Elaine (Tom) Gemuenden of Cable, Wis., and Margaret L. (Art) Abrahamson of Cloquet; sons William J. "Bill" (Beth) of Duluth, Harold L. (Liga) of East Greenville, Pa., and John A. (Gloria) of Hermantown; her brother, Kenneth (Bernice) Seehus of Duluth; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Wentzlaff of Duluth; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation is tentatively set for 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in Bell Brothers Chapel and tentatively from noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Grace Lutheran Church. Please see Tuesday's funeral notice. Dorothy Elizabeth (Sundstrom) Houk, 89, formerly of Duluth died Saturday, July 21, 2001, in Okeene Municipal Hospital, Okeene, Okla.
She is survived by a son, Russell Houk; a daughter, Margaret (Bill) Helveston; a daughter-in-law; three grandsons; a granddaughter; three great-grandchildren; a nephew; a niece; five grandnieces; and a grandnephew.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church of Fairview.
