Harry A. Panchott Sr.
Harry A. Panchott Sr., 72, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
Harry was born in Fargo, N.D., to Gusta (Hestadalen) and Henry Panchott in 1929. He was an avid sportsman who liked to fish, shoot sporting clays and hunt with his dog, Rascal. He was a member of the Lake Superior Model Boating Club and the Northwestern Gun Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gusta and Henry; a sister, Gloria Saveague; a brother, David; and a son, Harry Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Delores (Riggs); a sister, Marlow Norem of Florida; a daughter, Rita Jacobs of Canada; sons Stanley (Linda) and Vance, all of the Duluth area; and 11 grandchildren.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. today in Concordia Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Fred Olson Mortuary.

Erik Wayne Schrieffer
Erik Wayne Schrieffer, 27, a Superior/Duluth resident, was missing and presumed dead on Jan. 24, 2001. He was declared dead on July 12, 2001, in Superior.
He was born March 4, 1973, to Mary and Gene Schrieffer in Superior. He grew up in Billings Park and graduated from Superior Senior High School in 1991.

He attended Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College and obtained a two-year vocational diploma as an automotive technician. He was ASE-certified in many areas.

He moved to Arizona in 1997 and worked for Midas Muffler. He also had resided in Daytona Beach, Fla., where he worked for Muffler Man for a brief time.

Upon his return to the Superior/Duluth area in February 2000, he worked as a member of the Boilermakers Local 647.

As a child, he enjoyed writing; skiing; snowboarding; his dog, Spirit; and hunting with his father and brother, Kyle. As an adult, he enjoyed traveling; his work, especially welding; spending time with his infant son, his friends, and his dog, Brown Jug.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Eugene Johnson; his paternal grandparents, Lawrence and Dorothy Schrieffer; uncles Roydeen and Deneen Schrieffer; and an aunt, Sue Noack.

He is survived by his parents, Mary (Leon) Forstrom of Cloquet and Gene (Susan) Schrieffer of Anoka, Minn.; son, Zakary Jacob of Bisbee, Ariz.; brother, Kyle of Superior; grandmother, Ellen Johnson of Superior; godmother and aunt, Sharon Sleeman of Superior; and aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Sunday in Concordia Lutheran Church. The Rev. Scott M. Ludford and the Rev. Margaret "Maggie" Speich officiating. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the St. Louis County or Douglas County rescue squads. Arrangements by Downs Funeral Home, Superior.

Odea Arseneau Blakeney
Centenarian
Odea Arseneau Blakeney, 102, formerly of Gateway Towers died Monday, July 30, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
Odea was born June 10, 1899, in Stillwater, Minn., to Andrew and Diana (Bourdage) Arseneau, and they moved to Duluth when Odea was 3.

She was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea and a former member of St. John's Church. Odea was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and at the Depot.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace W., in 1972; her daughter, Carolyn Cheney, in 1976; and her son, H. Warren Blakeney, in 1994.

Odea is survived by her daughters Patricia Nolting of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Peggy Perttula of San Jose, Calif.; her sister, Lydia Olson of Duluth; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at a later date in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, with burial at Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Vivian Winifred White Logan
Vivian Winifred White Logan, 83, of Tioga Street passed away Saturday, July 28, 2001, in her home.
She was born in Duluth on July 18, 1918, to Frank and Grace (O'Shea) White. Vivian attended Washington Junior Elementary School and graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1935. She worked for ISD 709 as a secretary for 45 years, during which she worked for the superintendent. She retired in 1983.

Vivian was a life member of Minnesota Association of Educational Office Personnel and the National Association of E.O.P. She was chosen Educational Secretary by the M.A.E.O.P. in 1982-83.

Vivian was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, treasurer, archivist and a trustee for the First United Methodist Church Foundation. She was a member and past matron of Zenith Chapter 25, Order of Eastern Star, a member and past president of Duluth Women's Club, and the Duluth Business and Professional Women's Club. She was also a member and volunteer of St. Luke's Volunteer Guild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Logan, in 1978.

Vivian is survived by her dear friends Dawn and Richard Hill, Jason and Kelly Hill, and Doug and Karen Hill.
Funeral service: 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Crawford Funeral Service.

Judith "Judy" M.
(Puglisi) Fencil
Judith "Judy" M. (Puglisi) Fencil, 61, of North 82nd Avenue West died suddenly Monday, July 30, 2001, in her home.
She was born Oct. 18, 1939, in Duluth to Frank and Gladys (Stafstrom) Puglisi. She graduated from Denfeld High School in 1957 and organized their class reunions. She worked for the Doyle Agency for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Leonard.

She will be sadly missed by her husband of 29 years, Donald; daughters Kathleen (Scott) Taylor of Hibbing and Stacy (John) Richard of Minneapolis; brothers Frank (Marion) Puglisi and Bruce Puglisi of Duluth; a special "son, " David Caya; a special cousin, Anna Montgomery of Duluth and her mother's twin sister, aunt Myrtle Johander of Minneapolis; grandchildren Jesse, Rachel, Jordan and Jared; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Thursday and continues from noon until the 1 p.m. service Friday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Lloyd F. Wandtke
Lloyd F. Wandtke, 89, of Roseville, Minn., formerly of Duluth, died peacefully Monday, July 30, 2001.
He was a 30-year employee of the Public Service Commission for the state of Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bette.

He is survived by children Gloria, Kathy, David, Lori and Amy; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Violet Lane
Violet Lane, 71, of Duluth died Friday, July 27, 2001, in her home.
She was born Jan. 14, 1930, in Onaway, Mich., to Steven and Nina Thomas. She was a homemaker and lived most of her life in Duluth.

Violet is survived by sons David Esch of Perry, Mich., and Tom Peterson of Duluth; daughters Beverly Bartlett of Palm Harbor, Fla., Nancy Tickner of West Mount Olive, Mich., Trish (Adrian) Mink of Austin, Texas, and Kathy (John) Zesinger of Oroville, Wash.; and seven grandchildren.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Friday in Foley Chapel. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St.

David A. Sass
David A. Sass, 94, of Duluth passed away Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center.
He was born Dec. 8, 1906, in Duluth to John and Angeline Sass. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1924. He married Ann Gudlesky on March 3, 1930, in Duluth. He owned and operated Sass Food Market for 50 years, until his retirement in 1970. He was on the Board of Directors for Twin Ports Grocery for 30 years. He sponsored a bowling team in Duluth for 50 years. He was an Honored Master of Friars of St. Francis at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. He was a member of AARP.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Sass of 71 years; a daughter, Nannette "Nan" (Mel) Lindquist of Esko; a grandson, David Lindquist of Houston; great-grandchildren Lauren, Austen, Keegan and Kaitlan; a nephew; nieces; and friends.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Wednesday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Interment in Polish Catholic cemetery. Memorials preferred to the American Cancer Society.

Ray W. Campbell
Ray W. Campbell, 75, of South Pike Lake Road died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at his home in the loving arms of his family.
Ray died of mesothelioma lung cancer, caused by work-related exposure to asbestos before it was declared a hazardous substance. He faced the challenge of his illness the past year with patience, dignity and a sense of humor. His faith and love of God was strong and served him well. Throughout his ordeal, the support and caring of his family, and the attention of friends and St. Luke's hospice and home care, were a blessing and a joy to Ray. He maintained his strong independence to the very end, but was grateful for all the medical help, prayers and visits.

Ray was born Feb. 12, 1926, in Duluth to Everett and Lillybelle (Stuckman) Campbell. He attended Central High School. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a ball gunner in a B-17. He served 13 months in the occupation forces in Italy at the end of the war.

He married Margaret (Peg) McPhee on Sept. 4, 1954, and they lived at Pike Lake for 46 years. Ray was a journeyman structural ironworker for 40 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Local 563 Ironworkers Union and its international affiliate. He worked on many area buildings, the tower farm, and was the erection crew foreman for the Duluth Arena Auditorium (DECC). He worked for Greenland Contractors overseas for three years, building the early warning system's towers. He worked on taconite plants, power plants, hospitals, bridges, banks, churches, ore docks and schools all over the Midwest. He took pride in his trade, and had a reputation for his honesty, creativity and craftsmanship. He also enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow workmen. Ray taught in the apprentice program at DAVTI, now Lake Superior College.

Ray had been a member of the former Sacred Heart Church, and was a charter member and usher at St. Raphael's Church. Ray built model planes and boats for 67 years. He was a member and president of the Duluth Superior Radio Control Club. He was also a member of Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life, Minnesota Family Council, and Ray and his wife, Peg, were volunteers for the Minnesota Pollution Control Lake Monitoring Program at Pike Lake. Ray was a Mr. Fixit and could repair almost anything.

Ray is survived by his wife, Peg, and their children, Lynn (Greg) Bryant of Twig, Lee Campbell of Duluth, Laura (Wayne Berg) Campbell of O'Fallon, Ill., Lance (Cathy) Campbell of Hudson, Wis., Lawrence (Julie) Campbell of Duluth and Libby (Thor) Linnum of Duluth; grandchildren Chad and Katie Bryant, Stacy (Louis) German, Molly, Felicia and Jessica Campbell, Jared Smith, and Ian Campbell Berg; a great-grandson, Malik German; and a brother, Robert (Nancy) Campbell of Los Gatos, Calif.
Visitation begins at 4 p.m. today with wake prayers at 7 p.m. in Dougherty Funeral Home. Service at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Raphael's Church, 5779 Seville Road, Pike Lake. Private burial in Forest Hill cemetery at a later date. Memorials preferred. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 727-3555.
