ANNA B. BASTIAN
Anna B. Bastian, 99, of London Road, formerly of West Second Street died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
She was born June 30, 1902, in Germany. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; and sons Walter and Robert.

She is survived by her son, Eugene (Ruth) Donald Bastian of Helena, Mont.; daughters Betty Fitzgibbons of Duluth and Joan (Harry) Hodgins of Aurora, Colo.; 20 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
VISITATION: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

GERTIE JOHNSON
Gertie Johnson, 89, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001.
Survivors include a son, Andy (Jeanie); a daughter, Susan (Dale) Wall; a sister, Edna Kuras; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
VISITATION: 4-7 p.m. Sunday with a 6 p.m. prayer service in Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, (218) 681-4331, and continues from 1 until the 2 p.m. service Monday in Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls. Burial in Satesdahl cemetery, Excel Township, Minn.

MARIE SCHWANKL BARIL
Marie Schwankl Baril, 84, died peacefully Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, in her Lewiston, Idaho, home, where she had resided since 1986 with her husband, Richard, by her side.
She was born June 9, 1917, in Richmond, Minn., one of 10 children of Edward and Clara Kingen Schwankl. She attended school in St. Peter and Paul Catholic School in Richmond and Cold Springs High School in Cold Springs, Minn. She was married to Everett M. Davis and later married Richard L. Baril.

During the '50s and '60s, she worked for Duluth Avionics, Litton Industries and Frank's IGA Foods in Duluth.

Marie enjoyed sewing, quilt-making, and spending time with her husband, daughters and grandchildren. She and her husband traveled throughout the United States in their motor home. She also enjoyed keeping up on current events, and she had a very humorous way of looking at life and a wonderful sense of fashion. She loved Minnesota, especially the north woods and Lake Superior, where she visited in August 2001.

She is survived by her husband, Richard; daughters Beverly Davis (Jerry) Cran of Duluth, Dianne Davis Dmohowski of Akron, Ohio, Sandy Davis (Russell) Hoglund of Esko, Cindy Davis (Jim) Senske of Grand Forks, N.D., and Brenda Baril Wahner of Lewiston; brothers Roman (Heberly) Schwankl of Deerwood, Edward (Nellie) Schwankl of Mora, Minn., and Severin Schwankl of St. Cloud, Minn.; a sister, Agnes (Bob) Egerman of St. Cloud; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
MEMORIAL MASS will be held at a later date in Richmond. Burial in Fort Snelling cemetery.

CYRIL EDWARD ROGERS
Cyril Edward Rogers, a resident of Tucson, Ariz., for 25 years, passed away Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001.
He was born March 28, 1926, in Corinth, N.D. Mr. Rogers was a veteran of the Army. He served with the Big Red 1 Unit in Germany. He was a member of the Honor Guard in Arlington National cemetery. He worked as a court reporter for 35 years in Chicago and Duluth. Mr. Rogers was a member of the Barbershop Singing Society for 42 years. He was also a member of the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima and Men's Club of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Church and Sacred Heart League, all of Duluth.

"He will always be remembered for his great laugh."
BURIAL was held Sept. 12 in Our Lady Queen of All Saints, Tucson. Memorials can be sent to the Rogers Family, 22770 Penfield Ave. N., Scandia, MN 55073.

THERESA A. JELEN PEABODY FENA
Theresa A. Jelen Peabody Fena, 92, of Midway Avenue, Proctor passed away Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, in her home.

SHIRLEY HILDUR EDITH (NYBERG) PREMO
Shirley Hildur Edith (Nyberg) Premo, 84, of North 65th Avenue West died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.
She was born Sept. 5, 1917, in Superior to Adolf and Hilma (Bengston) Nyberg and was a graduate of Superior Central High School. A Duluth resident since 1945, she retired from JC Penney Co., after 22 years of service.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister in 1920; her brother, Merlin Nyberg in 1962; and her husband, John in 1969.

She is survived by her sister, Evelyn Joyce Ann Nyberg of Duluth; her nephew Richard Nyberg of Seattle; and nieces Diane Rassmusson of Lakeville, Minn., and Carol (Roger) Anderson of Superior.
VISITATION: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Saturday in Bell Brothers Chapel, Pastor Jim K. Hagen officiating. Burial in Graceland cemetery, Superior. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

RAMONA J. PFUHL
Ramona J. Pfuhl, 58, of Duluth died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, in the Waters of Park Point health care facility.
She was born in Salenis, Calif., on Jan. 5, 1943, to Raymond and Inez Neil. She had worked with Senior Adult Services.

Ramona was preceded in death by her parents; and brother Dennis Neil.

She is survived by a daughter, Kimberley Pfuhl of Duluth; sisters Kathy (Jerry) Mlaker and Jan (Dennis) Arens, all of St. Peter, Minn.; grandsons Shaun and Aaron Pfuhl; special brother-in-law Steve Pfuhl of Duluth; close family friends Jannie and Barbara; and many nieces and nephews.

She will be missed by many friends.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 1 p.m. Saturday in the Waters of Park Point. Memorials preferred. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

Jeanne Gayle Esterbrooks
Jeanne Gayle Esterbrooks of Superior Street died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born Jan. 22, 1948, to James H. and Betty Jane Esterbrooks in Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her spiritual partner, George Morrison; and her mother, Betty Jane (Lequier) Esterbrooks.

Jeanne is survived by her loving family including her daughter, Aubrey Lynn Danielson; her father, James; sisters Judith (Jonathan) Maki of Lansing, Mich., and Joy (Lyle) Koivisto of Duluth; nieces and nephews Rebecca Baker, Kirk (Laura) Young, Gina Young, Kristy Young, Lisa (Nick Faust) Koivisto and Lee Koivisto; grandnieces and grandnephew, Jillian, Johnathan, Natlalie and Emmalynn. Her spirit will live in all of us forever.
Family receives friends: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1710 E. Superior St. Reception immediately follows. Private family entombment.

Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

CHARLES BERWAY SWANSTROM
Charles Berway Swanstrom, 77, of Coolidge, Ariz., passed away Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001.
He was born March 24, 1924, in Duluth to John and Hilma Swanstrom. He attended Duluth Central High School and left high school to join the Navy during World War II. He married Norma Torvick on June 20, 1947.

Berway worked for Northwestern Bell in Duluth and was active in the local CWA union, including a stint as president.

Berway was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John William (Jack) Swanstrom.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; daughter Peggy Dressell of Casa Grande, Ariz., sons Berway (Mary) of Dayton, Minn., John (Sue) of Spring, Texas, and Joel (Lisa) of Edina, Minn.; grandchildren Mark, Kathi, Eric, Luke, Michelle, Nicole, Faye and Joel; four great-grandchildren; brothers Dr. Robert Swanstrom and Thomas Swanstrom; and many other relatives and friends.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: to be held in Minnesota in the spring of 2002. Memorials may be sent to the RTA Hospice Foundation, 177 W. Cottonwood Lane, Suite 10, Casa Grande, AZ, 85222.

RICHARD ALLEN HAWKINSON
Richard Allen Hawkinson went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Astrid; brothers John and Ronald (Ellen); and many other relatives and friends.
SERVICE: 11 a.m. Monday in Johnson Mortuary. Inurnment in Center City, Minn.

BRUCE HASSINGER
Bruce Hassinger, 60, of Denver, formerly of Duluth, passed away Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, in Denver.
Bruce was born June 30, 1941, in Duluth, and he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth. He was a professional geologist. On June 30, 1969, he married Sally Gilb in Watertown, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Florence Hassinger of Duluth.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Sally; a daughter, Abbey (Chris) Fujiyoshi of Portland, Ore.; a son, Reed Hassinger of Denver; and a brother, Richard Hassinger of White Bear Lake, Minn.
SERVICES were held Nov. 6. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Metro Denver or Colorado Mountain Club.
