Ramona I. Lott-Meyers
Ramona I. Lott-Meyers, 54, of Sturgeon Lake died Thursday, May 24, 2001.
She is survived by a son, Mike (Nina) Lott; daughters Melissa (Rocky) Wylie and Melody (Scott) Maker; two brothers; three sisters; and 11 grandchildren.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Saturday in River of Life Church, 1002 Carlton Ave., Cloquet. Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.

Matt J. Sever
Matt J. Sever, 86, of Ely died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, in the Ely-Bloomensen Community Hospital.
He was born Feb. 14, 1915, in Ely to Joseph and Barbara (Kochevar) Sever. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theatre.

Matt was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, VFW Post 2717, KSKJ Lodge 112 and the AFU Lodge 1, all in Ely.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Joseph Jr., Frank, John, Anton and Rudolph; and sisters Mary Samson and Anna Sever.

Survivors include his sister, Elizabeth Sever, of Ely, and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial: 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Monsignor Bernard Popesh as celebrant. Burial to follow in Ely cemetery. Arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely.

Joseph C. Marinaro
Joseph C. Marinaro, 76, of Nashwauk died Monday, July 9, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
He was born in Nashwauk on July 16, 1924, to Anthony and Elvira (Compenaro) Marinaro. He was an Army veteran of World War II and had worked as a service truck driver for M.A. Hanna Mining Co.

He was a member of the Nashwauk Fire Department, St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, American Legion Post 307, Hibbing Elks Club and managed the Nashwauk G.I. Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores, in 1994; his parents; and a brother, Eugene Marinaro.

He is survived by daughters JoAnn Ghant of Minneapolis, Mary Abellera of Minnetonka, Minn., and Susan (Jeff) Hill of Hibbing; sons Joseph (Mary Roy) of Trout Lake, Minn., Peter of Minneapolis and Mark (Tracie) of Nashwauk; a brother, Frank Marinaro of Babbitt; grandchildren Nichole (Jason) Bosley, Matthew Marinaro, Joseph Abellera, Jennifer Marinaro and Anthony Marinaro; and six step-grandchildren.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today with parish wake prayers at 7:30 p.m. and continuing from 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Thursday, all in St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, Nashwauk, the Rev. Lloyd Mudrak as celebrant. Interment in Nashwauk cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Don Ward, Tom Marinaro, Tim Abellera, Chet Moellering, Matthew Marinaro and Pet Moran. Honorary pallbearer will be Joseph Abellera. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.

Ethel T. Schlee
Ethel T. Schlee, 86, of East Lake, Minn., died Sunday, July 8, 2001.
She is survived by daughters Ellen Schlee, Joyce Hendrickson and Stella (Patrick) Jennison; grandchildren Carl, Tina, Eddie and Margaret; nine great-grandchildren; a brother; and a sister.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in Grace Lutheran Church (Log Cabin Church), Big Sandy, Minn. Family burial in Saron cemetery, near Dam Lake, Aitkin County, Minn. Arrangements by Willim Funeral Home, Aitkin.

Henry R. Bjorum
Henry R. Bjorum, 85, of Two Harbors died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, in the Sunrise Home.
He was born Sept. 13, 1915, to Carl and Elise (Jentoft) Bjorum in Two Harbors, where he was a lifelong resident. He attended schools in Two Harbors, then attended diesel school at the University of Illinois, Champaign, and in Duluth.

He served in the Navy as a machinist's mate first class during World War II aboard the LSM 209 in the Pacific Theatre. He worked for 25 years as a machinist for the DM&IR; Railway and Reserve Mining Co.

He was a former member of the VFW. He was a member of the American Legion and the USS-LSM Association and he contributed his World War II LSM photographs to the LSM official publication "Alligator Alley." He was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, choir member for 40 years, deacon, trustee, member of the centennial steering committee in 1989, member of the fund drive steering committee in 1994 and Lutheran Brotherhood.

He was a Scout cubmaster and served on the regional steering committee. He was also a member of Sons of Norway, Harbor Mates and the machinists union. Henry enjoyed wood carving -- making mostly ore boats and very detailed Edna G. tugs, which he gave to family members, including relatives in Norway.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Arthur, John and Earl; and a sister, Margaret Johnson.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helmi "Curly"; sons Richard (Patty) of International Falls and Robert of Virginia; a sister, Ena Kulas of Duluth; sisters-in-law Mary Bjorum, Phyllis Bjorum and Laimi Niemi; grandchildren Elissa and Erika, both of Minneapolis; step-grandchildren of the Boyd, Brendon, and Patrick and LaRee Etter families; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Two Harbors. Memorials preferred to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Organ Fund. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Joy Reis
Joy Reis, 70, of McGregor died Monday, July 9, 2001, in her home.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. with 7 p.m. prayers Thursday in McGregor Funeral Home. Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Friday in Holy Family Catholic Church, McGregor. Interment in Fort Snelling.

Evelyn M. Carlson
Evelyn M. Carlson, 89, of International Falls died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, in Falls Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by her son, Clifford A. Carlson; daughters Donna Glennie and Mary Russell; sisters Dorothy Schwab and Sophie Anderson; and a sister-in-law, Borgny Simonis.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in St. Thomas Catholic Church, International Falls. Burial in St. Thomas Catholic cemetery. Arrangements by Green-Larsen Mortuary Inc.

Shirley Florence
Emerson Smith
Shirley Florence Emerson Smith, 74, of Two Harbors was called to be with her Lord on Monday, July 2, 2001, at Lakeview Memorial Hospital, Two Harbors.
She was born Oct. 14, 1926, in Lenexa, S.D., to William and Florence (Haste) Emerason. She attended schools in Two Falls, S.D., DeSmet, S.D., Port Arthur, Ontario, and graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, S.D. Her post-graduate work included University High School, Ann Harbor, Mich., and she continued her education in college at Eastern Michigan, Ypsilanti, Mich.; South Dakota State, Brookings, S.D.; and Northern State University, Aberdeen, S.D. She received her bachelor of science in education and master of science in education.

She married James Harlan Smith in 1954 and again in 1981. She was in the Navy from February 1951 through August 1952.

She enjoyed bowling, fishing, pottery, sewing, wood carving and was an avid reader.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

She is survived by her son, Edwin A. Smith II and his wife, Nancy L., of Amelia, OH; her daughter, Debra K. Smith Case of United States Naval Academy of Benbrook, Texas; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; a twin brother, William H. Emerson Jr. and his wife, Eiko, of San Antonio, Texas; and a sister, Kathryn A. Brownell of Cortland, N.Y.
Private family services were held. Burial to take place in Texas at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association. Arrangements by Willim Funeral Home of Aitkin, (800) 225-4171.

Vernon H. Murren
Vernon H. Murren, 81, of Grand Rapids died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, in the Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta; a daughter, Sharon Powers; brothers Harold Murren and Garland "Tommy" Murren; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial service: 4 p.m. Saturday in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

Barry Lee Johnson
Barry Lee Johnson, 57, of Silver Bay died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at home.
He was born Aug. 5, 1943, to Amos and Shirley (DuBois) Johnson in Red Wing, Minn., where he grew up and attended schools. He served in the Air Force and Army during the Vietnam War, then attended Winona State College. He worked for 3M and Toro for several years, then started a security and irrigation business in Minneapolis, which he operated until moving to Silver Bay in 1996. He worked in maintenance at the Caribou Highlands Resort in Lutsen.

Barry will be sadly missed by friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his children, Nolan and Abby Beauchamp of Wisconsin; brothers Craig Johnson of West Palm Beach, Fla., and John (Sherri) Johnson of Merritt Island, Fla.; sisters Bonnie (Joe) Majerus of Duluth; Judy Adkins and Val (Rob) Laska, both of West Palm Beach, and Kim (Todd) Landers of Merritt Island; and many nieces and nephews.
Service: 11 a.m. Saturday in Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Two Harbors. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Carlene Ann Duncan (Neta-wahji-winook)
Carlene Ann Duncan (Neta-wahji-winook), 40, of Virginia died Sunday, July 8, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.
Visitation begins at 6 p.m. today with Tribal Rites at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Nett Lake School gymnasium. Burial in the family plot at the Old Tribal cemetery in Nett Lake.

William A. Saari
William A. Saari, 86, of Ely died Monday, July 9, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
He was born in Ely on July 12, 1914, to parents, Matt and Maria (Kangas) Saari, and was the last of his generation. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, where he was a mechanic on P38 aircraft in the Pacific. Bill worked at the Pioneer Iron Ore Mine in Ely for 32 years and also the E.P.A. Shagawa Lake Project for eight years.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Ely where he was on the church council, a member of the Ely Police Commission, past commander of VFW 2717 and an avid fisherman and blueberry picker.

Bill was the author of the book "Finn Hill."

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughters Ann LeVuo (Rollins) Juhnke of Shell Lake, Wis., and Victoria (Richard) Hall of Gilbert; sons Thomas (Mary) of Little Falls, Daniel of Ely and Lt. Col. Steven (Nancy) of Duluth; 12 grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Thursday in First Lutheran Church, the Rev. John Bonk officiating. Inurnment in Ely cemetery. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers. Arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely.
