Darlene Yvonne (Walker-Torkelson) Karlin passed away peacefully on June 3, 2005, surrounded by family at the Viking Manor Nursing Home.
Darlene was born on April 19, 1941 to Orran and Aurellia Walker at Swift, MN. She moved to Hawley at the age of 13 and graduated in 1959 from Hawley High School. She married
Dennis Torkelson, Sr. in December of 1960 and had five children. They were divorced in 1974. In 1982 she was united in marriage to Donald Karlin. Darlene worked at CJ's Cafe' in Hawley for many years. She also worked for the senior nutrition program in Hawley until her diagnosis with cancer in the spring of 2003. Darlene loved to crochet, knit, decorate cakes and spend coffee time with her many friends.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donald, 3 brothers, Ronnie, Billy & Dennis, and a sister, Bonnie.
She is survived by three brothers, Doug, Jim and Phil; one sister, Connie; five children, Cynthia (Doug) Dusbabek, Hawley, MN, Rhonda (Russell) Peterman, New York Mills, MN, Tammy (Jim) Linder, Ray, MN, Dennis Torkelson, Jr, Hawley, MN, Lisa Torkelson, Moorhead, MN; eleven grandchildren, Brian & Brandon Dusbabek, Jeramie Torkelson, Amanda, Samantha & Jacklyn Peterman, Jon, Jr. & Travis Braton, Chelsey & Haley Linder, and Justin Braton; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Willard Thompson, Ulen, MN.

Richard M. Melbye, 90, Ulen, MN (formerly of Hitterdal, MN) died on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 at the Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen, MN.
Richard M. Melbye was born on December 3, 1914 to Anton and Jenny (Oss) Melbye, in Goose Prairie Township, near Hitterdal, MN. He married
Pearl Eide on June 9, 1940 at Salem Lutheran Church, Hitterdal. He owned and operated the Melbye Store, Hitterdal, MN, with his parents and later was drafted into the U.S. Army. Richard owned and operated a lumber company with Peder Winden and they built the Dollar Homes through an operation in Hitterdal. He also owned and operated the Ho-Hum Motel in Hawley, MN and Dilworth, MN. In 1963 he became postmaster in Hitterdal, retiring in 1980. He moved to Viking Manor in June of 2004, and later Pearl and Richard moved together into the Northern Lights Assisted Living, Ulen, MN in October of 2004. Richard was a longtime member of the Volunteer Fire Dept, the Salem Lutheran Church, and the American Legion, Hitterdal, MN.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harvey and Floyd; and sister, Alpha Winden.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl of Ulen, MN; sons, Michael (Lois), St Louis Park, MN, Marshall (Diane), Dickinson, ND; sister, Alaila Hansen, Moorhead, MN; four grandchildren, Eric (Susan) Melbye, Matthew (Jennifer) Melbye, Jessica (Brian) Melbye Hawley, Kristin Melbye; four great-grandchildren, Emily, Abigail, Peter Melbye, Paige Hawley.
Lawrence J. Knauf, 66
Died: Friday, August 19, 2005, in the VA Medical Center, Fargo, ND.
Lawrence John Knauf, 66, of Perham, MN died on August 19, 2005 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Fargo, ND.
Lawrence was born on October 26, 1938 in Duluth, MN to Mathias and Grace Knauf. He grew up and attended school in Moorhead, MN. After graduating from Moorhead High School, Larry spent three years in the US Navy as a hospital corpsman.
Following his discharge from the Navy Larry attended Northwestern College of Chiropractic. Following graduation he practiced in Alexandria, MN and Perham, MN.
Larry is survived by his mother, Audrey Knauf, Detroit Lakes, MN; two daughters, Lori (Rodney) Ramsey, Oklahoma City, OK and Kelly Klimp, Fergus Falls, MN; one son, Kenneth Knauf, Alexandria, MN; two grandchildren, Christopher Klimp and Julie Ann Ramsey; two brothers, Wayne (Diana) Knauf, Alexandria, MN, and Terry (Maridee) Knauf, Cold Spring, MN; and one sister, Nancy (Roger) Richards, Dilworth, MN.
Larry was preceded in death by his father Mathias.
Vernon W. "Vern" Possehl, 73
Died: Monday, July 18, 2005, in MeritCare's Palliative Care Unit, Fargo, ND.
Vern was born on September 7, 1931 in Baker, MN to Walter and Clara Possehl. He grew up and attended school in Moorhead. Vern worked for Red Owl Warehouse, Cass Clay Creamery, and Moorhead Linoleum and Tile before starting Vern's Carpet Service. Following his retirement he worked for D & B Specialties.
On September 12, 1953 he married
Levetta Matzek in Fingal, ND. Levetta passed away on February 29, 2004.
Vern was an avid penny collector, loved auctioning for collectables and collecting for others.
Vern is survived by three sons, Larry (Julie), Fargo, Wayne, Moorhead and Jeff (Dawne) Glyndon, MN; two sisters, Wanda (Percy) Egge, Mesa, AZ, and Eunice Williamson, Shelton, WA; two grandchildren, AmyJo Possehl and Joseph Possehl and one great grandson, Donavin Possehl.
Vern was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and his twin sister, Vera.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to either Roger Maris Cancer Center or Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Wilbert L. Seydel, 84
Died: Saturday, November 05, 2005, in Sunnyside Nursing Home, Lake Park, MN.
Wilbert Lester Seydel, the second of Frederick and Louise (Schneider) Seydel's 12 children, was born October 27, 1921 on his parent's farm near the village of Dale in rural Becker Country, MN. He was the oldest boy.
After graduating from rural school District 41 in June 22, 1936, Wilbert continued living and farming on the Seydel homestead, raising wheat, barley, oats, soybeans, corn, cattle and hogs as well as maintaining an orchard and several gardens. In the late 1940's Wilbert played on the Lake Park Baseball Team, and remained a fan of the Minnesota Twins.
Wilbert was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Audubon, where he was baptized and confirmed and served on the church council. Wilbert was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, and fishing near the Seydel farm, as well as annual deer hunting reunions with relatives in northern Minnesota, near Badger. He joined his brothers and sisters on a trip to Alaska in 1992.
Wilbert was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Leona Koenig Sletmoen, Sylvia Nearhoof, Luella Lindstrom, Elline Noben and brothers Junior and Elroy.
Wilbert is survived by Grant Seydel, Hitterdal, MN, who lives on the Seydel homestead, Archie Seydel, Detroit Lakes, MN, Eugene (Sandy) Seydel, Willmar, MN; sisters Esther (Walter) Atkinson, Bemidji, MN and Lyla (Paul) Olson, Lake Park, MN; and 23 nieces and nephews.
Lynsey M. Escarcega-Licon, 23
Died: Sunday, April 02, 2006, in North Memorial Hospital, Robbinsdale, MN.
Lynsey was born August 12, 1982 at Moorhead, Minnesota to Mark Larson and Rhonda (Rolland) Olson. Lynsey was baptized and confirmed at Hawley Lutheran Church. She grew up and attended school in Hawley, then attended school and graduated from Osseo High School. She attended the Minnesota School of Business in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Lynsey married
Aldo Escarcega-Licon on December 23, 2002 at Robbinsdale, Minnesota. They have resided in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.
Lysney has battled courageously with her illness for the last several months.
Lynsey was preceded in death by her father, Mark Larson; and paternal grandparents, Victor and Vera Larson.
She is survived by her husband, Aldo Escarcega-Licon, Eden Prairie, MN; her mother, Rhonda (Wayne) Olson, Brooklyn Park, MN; one daughter, Alexie Marie Escarcega-Licon, Eden Prairie, MN; grandparents, Lonney & Bev Rolland, Hawley, MN, and step-grandmother, Fernette Olson, Hawley, MN; step-sisters, Heather Langer, Hawley, MN, and Amber Olson, Detroit Lakes, MN; many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Garner M. Pederson, 85
Died: Wednesday, March 01, 2006, in his home in rural Karlstad, MN.
Garner M. Pederson, 85, died on Wednesday, March 1, 2006, at his home in Springbrook Township, Kittson County, Minnesota, near Karlstad.
Garner Milford Pederson was born on September 13, 1920, the son of Christian A. and Esther (Stahlberg) Pederson in Springbrook Township. He attended school at LaFayette No. 27 in Springbrook Township through the eighth grade, then went to work on the family farm with his father, Chris, and his brother, Harvey.
On October 25, 1944, he was united in marriage to Carole Dagen at the bride's home near Karlstad. He reported for duty in the U.S. Navy in November, 1944, and served in Bremerton, Washington, until honorably discharged in January, 1946.
Following his military service, Garner and Carole purchased a farm in Springbrook Township where they would raise their family and live to the present. Besides farming, Garner worked in home construction with Donald Rice, Arthur Ingebrigtsen, Tom Britten and Keith Britten. He also worked in commercial construction with The Witcher Construction Company.
Garner was a member of First Lutheran Church of Karlstad, served as a township supervisor for 22 years, and was a member of the American Legion Post #445 in Karlstad for 23 years.
Garner loved the land and caring for the farm. His wife and family were always a priority. He enjoyed his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. With patience, he taught each of his grandchildren to drive the "little B" tractor. He was an avid reader and a wonderful storyteller.
Garner is survived by his wife, Carole; four daughters, Connie Nordin (James Jarshaw), Karlstad, MN; Lynnda (John) McNelly, Jackson, MN; Garnette (Dennis) Hanson, Newfolden, MN; Diedre (Jan) Nordin, Thief River Falls, MN; and one son, Jaeden (Lorie) Pederson, West Fargo, ND; 14 grandchildren, Eric (Martha) Nordin; Jed (Melanie) Nordin; Thomas (Betsy) Nordin; Renee (Tom) Andresen; Rachel (Mike) Ingebretson; Randy (Michelle) Hanson; Alan (Michelle) Hanson; Ryan (Holly) Stephenson; Chris (Andrea) Stephenson; Andriana Hanson; Britta Hanson; Kate (Cory) Anderson; Adam (Wendy) Nordin; Bailey Nordin; 12 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Karlee, Keaton, Blaine, Haley, Kinley, Alec, Brady, Mari, Jayley, Michaela, and Brody; one sister, Adeline Ingebrigtsen, Edmonds, WA; brother-in-law, WallaceOlson, White Bear Lake, MN; sister-in-law, Dorothy Pederson Miller, Humboldt, MN; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Garner was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harvey Pederson; and sister, Lucille (Pederson) Olson.

Margaret was born June 7, 1925 in Clay County to William and Marie (Evert) Edwards of Wolverton, MN. She attended school at Koester School in rural Sabin, MN. On November 17, 1943 she married
Steven Thompson, Jr. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sabin, MN. Together they farmed near Baker, MN, where they still reside today. Margaret was a member of Baker-Downer Westminster Presbyterian Church, Baker, MN.
She is survived by her husband, Steven Jr.; three sisters, Hazel (Jack) Fankhanel, Pelican Rapids, MN, Dorothy (Don) Brakke, Oxbow, ND, and Beatrice Iken, Wadena, MN; four sisters in-law, Lorraine Edwards, Wolverton, MN, Elaine Quiggle, Barnesville, MN, Doris Thompson, Baker, MN, and Virginia Thompson, Breckenridge, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lorraine Brakke; brother, Dennis Edwards; brothers in-law, Orris Brakke and Robert Iken.
