Age 73 of Wyoming, MN, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2016 from cancer with Tony at her side. She fought a courageous fight and smiled through it all at home until January 28. We then took her to Eucumen Nursing Home in North Branch, Minn. where she passed away on January 31, 2016. She is survived by her loving friend Tony Larson, dog Patsy, brother Richard Norton, and many friends. Darlene requested that no services be held; she would be cremated and later her ashes be taken to a special place in Montana by her loving friend Tony and her dog Patsy. Jim loved to fish and spend time in Texas, Mexico, and his cabin in Finlayson. Age 61 of Stillwater, has left us for her next journey on January 30th, 2016. Her patience, knowledge and understanding will never be extinguished from the ones she touched, loved and cared about. And she will be loved forever by these same individuals. Pat was born on August 30th, 1954 in Long Prairie MN. She Graduated from Minnetonka High School in 1972. Pat's college education spanned from the University of Minnesota to obtaining her Chemistry Degree and MBA from St. Scholastica in Duluth. Pat died peacefully at her home from GBM - brain cancer. Her pleasures in life included spending quality time with friends and extended family and doing the same, providing and supporting as a wonderful mother and grandmother. She traveled both domestically and throughout the world for work. And when work ended, she would enjoy her own time taking in the variety of sites of interest with her husband Bruce. Pat enjoyed being outside with activities such as golf, downhill skiing, spring organization of her garden house, slow pontoon rides on the lake and sunsets from her dock swing at her home in Stillwater. She was of strong Danish ancestry, which assisted her in many ways of being tolerant of her surroundings and events she could not change. Pat did change many things in her life however. She was hired by Horst Rechelbacher to join Aveda in 1989 as a Senior Chemist. Later being promoted to Research and Development Director. Then in 2008, she was promoted to Vice President R&D Product Development. Pat retired in January, 2016. Throughout her career she was instrumental in Aveda's growth and success by managing many different functional areas within Research and Development. She successfully handled oversight of formulation groups in Skin Care, Hair Care, Spa Products, Color Cosmetics and all associated products. In addition, Pat managed the Botanical Research Group handling the development of active ingredients for Aveda products. She directed the Microbiology, Pilot Scale Up Groups, Performance Testing and the Aveda Corporate Research Salon. Pat also served on the International Standards Organization for cosmetic products and ingredients that label themselves as green and earth friendly. Prior to her employment at Aveda, Pat worked in development of many products including antiperspirants, hair relaxers, permanent waves, curl activators and a wide variety of skin care. In addition to beauty products, Pat helped conduct hypothermia research. Her job was to toss people hooked up to monitoring devices into Lake Superior. This lead to the development of what is now called the "breathalyzers", which are used by law enforcement to determine alcohol consumption. Not only did she develop the tool, but she was a testing subject herself. Another one of Pat's passions was being a teacher for Young Women in Science. She spent 20 years traveling throughout the nation promoting, channeling and expanding young women's inner scientific minds. A celebration of Pat's life with friends and family will take place on Sunday, May 1st, 2016 from 1-5pm at the Stillwater Public Library - Plaza Level. Age 90 of West St. Paul, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2016. preceded in death by parents Vincenz and Anna Pfender; brother Albert (Thea) Pfender; sisters Paula (Karl) Slessiona and Maria (Sepp) Jerg; brother-in-law Heinrich Slessiona. Survived by wife of 61 years Maja Pfender; children Roland (Mary Jo) Pfender, Norbert (Bette) Pfender, Corinne (Tim) Noyes; grandchildren Kurt Pfender, Cass (Dave) Chapman, Loren Pfender, Maia Noyes, Julia Noyes, Clara Noyes; great-granddaughter, Cassidy Chapman; sister Fransiska Slessiona, and numerous nieces and nephews. Emil was born in Dietershausen, a small farming village in southern Germany on May 25, 1925. He was united in marriage to Maja Staiger in 1954 and received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Stuttgart in 1959. He immigrated with his wife and children to the U.S. in 1964 to join the University of Minnesota. Since 1967 he served as director of the High Temperature and Plasma Laboratory, leading the plasma program to become one of the most highly regarded plasma research laboratories in the world. He formally retired from the University in 2000, but remained up to the time of his death an active faculty member co-advising several Ph.D. students. Emil received many honors and professorships including being elected into the National Academy of Engineering in 1986. Among his awards are the Alexander von Humboldt Award of the German Government, the Gold Honorary F. Krizik Medal for Merits in the Field of Technical Sciences of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Honorary Doctor's degree from the Technical University of Ilmenau, Germany, and the Plasma Chemistry Award from the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry. He co-founded the Journal Plasma Chemistry and Plasma Processing and co-authored Thermal Plasmas: Fundamentals and Applications, a textbook that remains a standard reference source for researchers in the field. His research has led to many patents. In addition to a wonderful career, Emil enjoyed spending time with his family and tending to his tree farm at the lake where he and Maja planted 7,000 trees. He was an avid pilot and hunter and a connoisseur of fine wine. Emil had an appropriate joke for all occasions and was known to his friends and colleagues as a true gentleman, unfailingly gracious and generous. Memorial Mass will be held on March 19, 2016 at Church of the Assumption Catholic Church, 51 West 7th St, St Paul at 11:00 AM. Visitation 1 hour prior at 10:00 AM. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lynn; his children, Bob (Judy), Chuck (Ronda), Jim (Lisa), Mary (William) Spangler; 8 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; and one brother, David.
