Fern Kelsey, 91, of Truman, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Luther Retirement Home, Truman.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, Madelia, with burial in Riverside Cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at Pilgrim Funeral Home, Madelia, and will continue one hour prior to services Friday at the church.
She is survived by daughters, Maxine Sanders of Truman, Shirley "Mardelle" Gerdes and husband Harry of Ormsby, Marjory Nelson and husband David of Hummelstown, Penn., Carole Krueger and husband Don, and Charlotte Knaak and husband Jerold, all of St. James, and Valerie Forsythe and husband Gary of Albert Lea; sons, Dale and wife Judie of Fairfax, Va. Ronald and wife Jeanne of Lamberton, and Malcolm and wife Karen of Lewisville; 27 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter Donna Jean; sister Valva; two great grandchildren; and son-in-law Edward Sanders.
She was born July 1, 1908, in Galt, Iowa, to Earl and Charlotte (Patterson) Ogden. She grew up in rural St. James, where she attended rural schools and St. James High School. She married Dale Kelsey on June 25, 1927, in Estherville, Iowa. They farmed in rural Madelia and Lewisville, retiring in 1974, when they moved to Madelia. She moved to Luther Retirement Home in March 1999. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Madelia Hospital Auxiliary, Madelia Garden Club, and the Extension Group. She had also been a 4-H leader. She was awarded the Outstanding Senior Citizen for Watonwan County in 1981.

Gordon Pikal, 86, of Brownton died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Hutchinson Community Hospital.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Church, Hutchinson, with burial in Oakland Cemetery, Hutchinson
Visitation is 5-9 p.m. today and 8-11 a.m. Friday at Hobratz Hantge Chapel, Hutchinson, and at the church Friday one hour before the service.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes; sons, Keith and wife Joan of Brownton, and Leigh Pikal and wife Nancy of Hutchinson; eight grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; sister, De Etta Pikal; brothers, Melvin, Leonard and wife Darlene; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lloyd.
He was born April 22, 1914, in Round Grove Township, rural Brownton, to Frank and Elizabeth (Holetz) Pikal. He attended rural school and Brownton High School. He married Agnes Heller of Hutchinson on July 8, 1937, at Peace Lutheran Church, Hutchinson. He has been a member of Peace Lutheran Church for 62 years. He farmed in the Brownton area. He spent winters in Yuma, Arizona for the last 33 years.

Goldie VanAvermaet, 79, of Chaska, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000 at St. Francis Regional Medical Center, Shakopee.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Bertas Funeral Home, Chaska, with burial in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
Visitation is one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
She is survived by son Dennis and wife Kathy Wells of Prior Lake; daughters, Pat Sondergaard of Eden Prairie, and Shelley and husband Lyle Shackelford of Spring Park; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Allen and Doris Penske, Marvin and Judith Penske, and Arletta Penske, all of Vesta, Loretta Penske of Marshall, and Joyce Penske of Coon Rapids; sisters, Gilfie Lyons, and Delphine Hansvick, both of Vesta, and LaVon Wells of Northome; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Kelsey Wells and Ceriel VanAvermaet; brothers, Howard, Karmen, Kenneth, and Glen; brothers-in-law, Jeff Lyons, John Hansvick, and Paul Wells; and son-in-law Roger Sondergaard.
She was born Oct. 5, 1920 in Vesta, to Gus and Emma (Kolander) Penske. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, Sleepy Eye.

Dorothy M. Proehl, 82, of Glencoe, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Glencoe Area Health Center.
There will be a private family service, with burial in First Lutheran Cemetery, Glencoe.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today, and 8-9 a.m. Friday at Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel, Glencoe.
She is survived by her husband, Frederick; son, Wayne and wife Helen of Glencoe; and daughter, Marjorie Schmidt and husband James of New Ulm.

Marie Wertish, 89, of Springfield, died Friday, May 5, 2000 at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield.
Services will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Springfield, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-11 a.m. Monday at Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield. There will be a parish prayer service 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and a St. Anne's C.C.W. rosary at 11 a.m. Monday at the church.
She is survived by sons, Leo Ochs of Springfield, Stephen and wife Mary Ochs of Dallas, and Thomas and wife Melanie Ochs of Redwood Falls; 22 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; sisters, Elizabeth Sorenson of Wabasso, and Francis Scherer of Wayzata; and brothers, George and wife Frieda Roiger of Springfield, and Joseph and wife Marianna Roiger of Springfield.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother Theresa; husbands, Leo Ochs and Ted Wirtish; grand-daughters, Michelle and Catherine Ochs; brothers, Adolph and Albert; and sister Anna Margaret Steffl.
She was born June 14, 1910 in Springfield, to John and Elizabeth (Schneider) Roiger. She attended St. Raphael's Catholic School and Mankato Business College. She married Leo C. Ochs on Oct. 22, 1935 in Springfield. She married Theodore Wirtish on April 8, 1978 in Bechyn. After returning to Springfield, she worked at Ochs Brick & Tile Company, the Federated Store, and other locations, before joining the staff at Minnesota Valley Natural Gas Company, where she worked until she retired in 1975. She then became a nurses aid at Springfield Hospital and entertained as the "Pink Lady" and played with a group called "The Relatives." She was a volunteer driver, and a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Springfield, where she played the organ. She was a member of St. Anne's C.C.W., the Catholic Order of Foresters, and Springfield Senior Citizens.

Gene Olson, 68, of LeSueur, formerly of Arlington, died Thursday, May 4, 2000 at Minnesota Valley Health Center, LeSueur.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, Arlington.
Visitation is noon-2 p.m. Monday at the church.
Fenske Funeral Home, Arlington, is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife Marlys; daughter Kimberly and husband Dean Hyers of Denmark Township, rural Hastings; grandsons, Ethan and Aaron Hyers; mother Dagmer Olson of Willmar; brothers, Curtis and wife Carolyn of Willmar, and Alan and wife Mary Ann of Palmer, Alaska.
He was preceded in death by his father Roy; and a sister.
He was born June 3, 1931 in Dawson, to Roy and Dagmer (Christensen) Olson. He graduated from Dawson High School in 1948. He married Marlys Ulrich on Sept. 21, 1957 in Buffalo Lake. He worked in auto sales in Hector, Hutchinson, Owatonna, and Arlington. He later sold recreational vehicles for Keeper's R V, Mankato, until retiring in Oct. 1998.

Arlene Holm, 67, of 114 North Payne in New Ulm died Wednesday, May 3, 2000 at the home of her daughter in Cathedral City, Calif.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in
New Ulm, with burial in the Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday and 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
She is survived by her husband, Edward Holm of New Ulm; a daughter,
Carol Holm of Cathedral City; a sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Donald Oerter of Tyler; sisters-in-law, Florence Anderson of Belview and Sally Holm of New Ulm; and a brother-in-law, Louie Stadick ofLafayette. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, two brothers, two nephews and a niece.
She was born Sept. 7, 1932 in Tracy to John and Hilda Schmidt. She married Edward Holm on May 20, 1952 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tracy. They lived in Minneapolis from 1953
to 1989 when they moved to New Ulm. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. In lieu of flowers, family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Leon E. Timm, 64, of Kensal, N.D., died Thursday May 4, 2000 at the MeritCare Medical Center in Fargo, N.D.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. today at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kensal, with burial in the Kensal Cemetery.
Visitation was Friday at the Eddy Funeral Home in Jamestown, N.D.
Leon is survived by his wife, Elaine Timm of Kensal; sons, Todd and his wife Kamy Timm, and Rory Timm, all of Kensal; sisters, Dorothy Junell of Silverdale, Wash., and Darlene Rask of St. Paul; brothers and sisters-in-law, Louis and Hertha Timm, Robert and Helen Timm all of Kensal, and Jerome Timm of Valley City, N.D.; three grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Russell Timm. He has relatives in New Ulm, including Paul, Hilda and John Fritsche.
Leon was born June 2, 1935 in Kensal, to Leo and Anna (Forsberg) Timm. He graduated from Kensal High School. He entered the United States Air Force on Oct. 28, 1954 in Fargo. He received his training at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado. He was stationed at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina and was discharged on Aug. 28, 1958. He returned to Kensal, where he started farming with his brother.
He married Elaine Helmstetler on May 1, 1964 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Jamestown, N.D. They made their home in rural Kensal and continued to farm. He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kensal.

Dorothy M. Proehl, 82, of Glencoe, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000 at Glencoe Hospital.
Services were held at Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel, Glencoe, with burial in First Lutheran Cemetery, Glencoe.
She is survived by her husband Frederick; children, Wayne and wife Helen of Glencoe, and Marjorie and husband James of New Ulm; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sister Ardys Rannow and husband Walter of Hutchinson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and two brothers.
She was born Feb. 14, 1918 in Glencoe, to August and Frances (Carl) Schuetz. She married Frederick Proehl on June 27, 1937 in Glencoe. They lived on a farm west of Glencoe. She volunteered at the Clothing Depot and the Glencoe Hospital.

Marion Burk Harmening, 77, of New Ulm died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Oak Hills Living Center, New Ulm, of cancer.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at Firle Funeral Home in New Ulm and one hour prior to the services at the church.
She is survived by sons; David and fiance Jean Spelbrink, John of New Ulm; daughters, Ann Norway of Morgan, Mary and her husband Boyd Longshore of Colorado Springs Colo.; sister, Kathleen Gruen of Fontana, Calif.; sister-in-law, Ruth Krueger of Sleepy Eye; five grandchildren; one niece; and four nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother; husband in 1988, two brothers-in-law; and a niece.
She was born Aug. 8, 1922, to Walter and Angeline (Chartrow) Burk in Duluth. Following the death of her mother in childbirth, she lived in Milwaukee, Wis., with her aunt and uncle, Otto and Lydia Burk, for the first five years of her life. Upon her father's marriage to Adeline Gruen, she returned to Duluth to live. She graduated from Denfeld High School in 1941. She moved to Milwaukee in 1943, working in various aspects of the war effort. She married Edgar Harmening on June 19, 1948, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye. They lived in Sleepy Eye until 1975, when they moved to Grand Rapids. She moved to New Ulm in 1989. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She became a resident of Oak Hills Living Center when it opened.
The family prefers memorials to Martin Luther College or the American Cancer Society.

Clara Geiger, 92, formerly of Broadway Haus in New Ulm died Wednesday, May 3, 2000 at the Fairfax Community Home in Fairfax.
Services are 1 p.m.. Saturday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. today at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home and continues one hour before the service Saturday at the church.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte and David Nack of Franklin, Celia and David Brohn of South Haven, Mich., and Joyce and Edward DeForge of Crete, Ill.; son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Gerald Geiger and his wife Carol of Belmont, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; sisters, Tabea Manthey of Portage, Wis. and Ella Rathjen of Mesa, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerhard Geiger on Feb. 28 1982; daughter and son-in-law, Caroline and Richard Doletzky; sister, Ada Wernick on Jan. 21, 2000, and a granddaughter.
She was born Jan. 15, 1908, in Theresa, Wis., to Rev. Heinrich and Anna (nee Linse) Rathjen. She married the Rev. Gerhard Geiger on Aug. 14, 1938, in Portage, Wis. They lived in rural parishes in Witten, S.D.; Tomah, Wis.; Winona, Minn.; Buffalo, Minn.; Mischicot, Wis.; and Roscoe, S.D. She was active in the ladies' group and visitation of the elderly. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.
