John Winkler, 79, of Buffalo Lake, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Buffalo Lake Healthcare Center.
Mass of Christian burial is 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church In Stewart with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hughes Funeral Home in Stewart with a 7 pm. prayer service; and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Winkler of Buffalo Lake; son, Art Winkler and wife Gail of Hutchinson; daughter, Deb Willhite and husband Cliff of Hector; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters: Evelyn Ewert and husband Jerome of Stewart, Cecilia Surges of Buffalo Lake, Viola Braun of Rochester, Helen Callier of Rochester, and Alice Gehrke and husband LeRoy of Hutchinson; and by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Rose Meuhlberg, and five brothers-in-law.
He was born July 21, 1921, in Buffalo Lake to Andrew and Cecilia (Hesse) Winkler. He attended school in Buffalo Lake. He married Lois Lucille Roman on April 23, 1946, at St. Anastasia Catholic Church in Hutchinson. They lived in Buffalo Lake and farmed. He then worked at the Farmers Co-op Elevator Company in Buffalo Lake driving bulk truck and semi. He then became an independent owner-operator and hauled agricultural products. In his later years he drove school bus for Buffalo Lake-Hector School. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stewart. He was active in many organizations and projects within the church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a retired member of the Buffalo Lake Fire Department

Edward Bast, 96, of Springfield, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Springfield with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield, and at the church Thursday, one hour prior to the service.
He is survived by sisters-in-law, Ella and her husband Carl Steinberg of St. Peter and Esther Anderson of Lamberton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Malinda in 1989; brothers, Otto, William and Fred; and sisters, Eda, Emma, Lydia, and Erna.
He was born June 3, 1904, in Sundown Township, Redwood County, to Richard and Matilda (Hauth) Bast. He attended country schools and farmed in Sundown Township until moving to Springfield in 1964. He married Malinda Bierman at Germantown Lutheran Church. He moved to Vista Ridge in 1995. He become a resident of St. John Lutheran Home last September. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Lillian Strate, 84, of Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Divine Providence Community Home, Sleepy Eye.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Divine Providence Community Home Chapel, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, and at the chapel Friday, one hour prior to the service. A parish prayer service will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
She is survived by her sister, Rose Gulbrandson of Sleepy Eye; a sister-in-law, Ines Lochner of Sleepy Eye; and 14 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Woodrow in 1995; brothers, Hugo, Andrew, Leo, John, Ben, Bill, Leonard, Carl; and sisters, Florence and Elizabeth.
She was born May 19, 1916, in Albin Township, Brown County, to Andrew and Catherine (Schieffert) Sperl. She attended school in Albin Township. She married Woodrow "Woody" Strate on July 20, 1939, in Sleepy Eye. They farmed in Home Township until moving to Sleepy Eye in 1965. She belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye; National Catholic Society of Foresters; Catholic Aid Association; and VFW Auxiliary.

Hazel Felleson, 87, of Belview, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Castle Ridge Care Center, Eden Prairie.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, Belview, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday and one hour before the service Friday at the church. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Redwood Valley Funeral Home handled arrangements.
She is survived by her children, Charles of New London, Christine Brewster of Maple Grove, Cheri and husband Ron Morris of Wayzata, and David and wife Gaylene of Champlin; seven grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, David and Leota Larson; sisters, Esther Lindsay, Lil Roberts, Nelda Smith, Dorothy Bryant, and Thelma Stevensen; and a sister-in-law, Nellie Mae Larson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Hattie Larson; sister, Evelyn; brothers, Robert Larson, Andrew Larson Jr., and Joseph Larson; and her husband, Edwin.
She was born July 1, 1913, in Havana, Ill., to Andrew and Hattie (Hendricker) Larson. She graduated from Western Illinois University, Macomb, Ill. She taught 14 years in rural Illinois. She married Edwin Felleson on June 14, 1948. They moved to a farm near Belview until 1993 when she moved into Belview. She became a resident of Parkview Home, Belview, in June of 1999 and of Castle Ridge Care Center, Eden Prairie, in June of 2000. She served on the Belview School Board and was president of the PTA. She was circle leader at Grace Lutheran Church and active in Ladies' Aid.

Virginia M. Kelly 70, of Lamberton, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Valley View Manor, Lamberton.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Sturm Funeral Home, Lamberton, with burial in Bird Island City Cemetery.
Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
She is survived by her mother, Bernice Dahl, of Olivia; daughters and sons-in-law, Lynndene and Bob Way of Alexandria, Pamela and Dale Tellinghuisen of Lamberton; and Gail Kelly and special friend Nelson Shimazoo of Sacramento, Calif.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Delton Duehn of Hector and Connie Kelly of Olivia.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Dahl; and a son, Robert (Bobby).
She was born Jan. 3, 1931, in Minneapolis to Robert and Bernice (Wederath) Dahl of Olivia. She grew up in Olivia and graduated from Olivia High School. The family moved to Lamberton in 1963 and operated the Town House Cafe for 10 years. She managed the Tracy Golf Club for two seasons after selling the cafe. She moved to Lakeville and managed a mobile home court. She returned to Olivia in 1998 before moving to Valley View Manor in November 2000.
Memorials are preferred to Valley View Manor in Lamberton and Children's Ministry at House of Prayer Outreach Centre, Alexandria.

Maurice L. Simonsen, 81, of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites will be performed by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard.
Visitation is 4:30-8 p.m. today and 7:30-9:30 a.m. Friday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 5 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille of Sleepy Eye; daughters and sons-in-law, Rose and Don Suker of Apple Valley, Sharon and Tom Hirsch of Sleepy Eye, Janet Huiras of Sleepy Eye, Marie and Tryg Frederickson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Diane and husband Dwight Sommer of Sleepy Eye, and Julie Simonsen of Bologna, Italy; son, Lynn Simonsen of Sleepy Eye; 13 grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bernard and Ruth Simonsen of Morgan, and Clarence and Venge Simonsen of Marshall; and a sister-in-law, Beverly Simonsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Alice and Laura; brother, Donald; and a sister-in-law, Mary Simonsen.
He was born Dec. 13, 1919, in Eden Township, Brown County, to Lars and Rose Mary (Matter) Simonsen. He attended school in Eden Township, St. Mary's School in Sleepy Eye, and ag school in St. Paul. He served in the U.S. Army as a tank operator with the 864th Aviation Engineers and as MP in Hiroshima during World War II in Japan from January 1945 until November 1946. He operated the family farm. He belonged to the Sleepy Eye Drum and Bugle Corps from 1948-1951. He married Lucille Soukup on June 1, 1950, in Sleepy Eye. He served on the Eden Township Board for 23 years and St. Mary's Board of Education. He was an adult leader in the Evan Skyrockets 4-H Club. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and Brown County Holstein Association.

Gerald R. 'Jerry' Fries, 50, of Green Isle died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Fairview-University Medical Center, Minneapolis.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Green Isle. Burial with full military honors will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8:30 p.m. Monday and 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Fenske Funeral Home, Arlington, is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Fries of Green Isle; parents, Raymond and Eleanor Fries of Green Isle; brother, Rick and wife, Nancy Fries, of Green Isle, father- and mother-in-law, Norman and Delores Thoele of Hamburg, sister-in-law Kathy Thoele and special friend, Doug Herrmann of Glencoe.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, a sister, Linda; and nephew, Phillip Herrmann.
He was born on Sept. 8, 1951, in Arlington, to Raymond and Eleanor (Schaefer) Fries. He was a 1969 graduate of Arlington-Green Isle High School. On Sept. 16, 1972, he married Bonnie Thoele at St. Paul's Reformed Church, Hamburg. He worked at Telex Communications in Glencoe as a Class A mold setup until 1995, at which time he was no longer able to work because of illness. He was a member of the Green Isle American Legion and C&N Sales Dart League.

Donald McMullen, 79, of Comfrey died March 28, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Comfrey with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-9:30 a.m. Monday at Sturm Funeral Home in Comfrey.
There will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a Christian Mothers rosary at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
He was born June 1, 1921, in Madelia, to Patrick and Teresa (Lodes) McMullen. He grew up in the Madelia area, attended Madelia School and graduated from St. James High School In 1940. On Sept 1, 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in World War II aboard the USS Sampson and the USS Burdo. On July 16, 1944, he married Anna Mae McMorrow at St. James Catholic Church.
After military service e returned to Madelia and farmed. The couple moved to Comfrey in 1957 and farmed in Selma Township. He attended Canby Vo-Tech. He worked with the John Deere Company in sales and for Ludewig Brothers - Oliver Dealership in Comfrey. In 1972 he started working for NaChurs Fertilizers as a district sales manager and in 1967 became a distributor. He was the owner and operator of the Springfield division of All Crop Fertilizers. He was secretary for Cottonwood County Corn Growers, belonged to the Albin Johnson American Legion Post 244 in Comfrey and the Sleepy Eye VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Mae McMullen of Comfrey; daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Tom Turbes of Lamberton, Barbara and Eugene Bertrand of Sleepy Eye, Joann McMullen of Comfrey; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Jeanette McMullen of Plummer, Richard and Susan McMullen of Comfrey, Jim and Pam McMullen of Sleepy Eye; 22 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Wilbert Zastrow of Amboy; sisters-in- law, Teresa McMullen of Lewisville and Margaret and husband Ervin Sturm of Fairmont; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert McMullen; sister, Phyllis Starkweather; and grandchildren, Michael Turbes and Amanda McMullen.

Dr. William A. Black, 84, of 1508 S. Franklin St. in New Ulm, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Mass of Christian burial is 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with burial in the Catholic Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm veterans organizations.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. The Knights of Columbus will pray the rosary at 6:30 p.m., and there will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Black of New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Dr. Hal Boyer of Louisville, Ky.; sons and daughters-in-law, William R. and Marcia Black of Parkesburg, Penn., Dr. James E. and Charlene Black of Eden Prairie, John M. and Kathryn Black of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Robert C. Black of Minneapolis; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Barbara Black on May 19, 1987; and a brother, John Black.
He was born Jan. 25, 1917, in Coeurd"Alene, Idaho to Roy and Stella (Bartels) Black. He graduated high school at the age of 16. He attended the University of Idaho and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Barbara Richards on Sept. 1, 1938, in Pocatello, Idaho. They resided in Philadelphia, Penn. where he attended Temple University Medical School. In June 1940, they moved to Rochester where he completed his residency training at the Mayo Clinic. On Nov. 13, 1944, he entered the U.S. Army and attained the rank of captain in the Army Medical Corps and served as Chief of Surgical Services. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 5, 1946. In June 1947 they moved to New Ulm. He was a physician and general surgeon at the Seifert Clinic in New Ulm and an original founder of the New Ulm Medical Clinic. In 1950 he was admitted to the American College of Surgeons and subsequently was appointed as Governor of the American College of Surgeons. He retired in 1988. On March 16, 1989, he married Ruth Fering in Indian Rocks Beach, Fla. and continued to live in New Ulm. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, American Legion Post 132 in New Ulm, and St. Patrick's Council 076 Knights of Columbus in New Ulm.

Myra Hanson, 93, of St. James, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center, St. James.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, Butterfield, with burial in Waverly Lutheran Cemetery, Trimont.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Arrangements are handled by Sturm Funeral Home, St. James.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Betty Hanson of Redwood Falls and Roger and Phyllis Hanson of Clitherall; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Olson of Ormsby; sisters-in-law, Mildred Christensen, Edna Hansen and Evelyn Minick, all of Fairmont; brother-in-law, George Hanson of Austin,; cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Agon; sister, Doris Toothaker; and brothers, Thorvold, Leonard and Victor Christensen.
She was born on Aug. 23, 1907, in Galena Township, Martin County, to Lars and Caroline (Hanson) Christensen. She married Agon Hanson on Aug. 23, 1933, in Trimont. They lived on farms in rural Ormsby, Odin, and Butterfield. She lived one and a half years in Madelia and five years at Pleasant View Good Samaritan Care Center in St. James. She was active in church in women's organizations and teaching Sunday School. She also belonged to the Garden Club.

Victor Rummel, 79, of Springfield, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield.
Services are 10:30 a.m., Saturday at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Springfield; with burial in the Veterans Section of Springfield City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today and 7:30-10 a.m. Saturday at Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield. A parish prayer service will be at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. A men's rosary will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Don Pierce of Fort Calhoun, Neb.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bertha in 1999; brothers, Joseph, Isadore and Valerine; and sister, Angella.
He was born May 3, 1921, in Springfield to Joseph and Katherine (Marz) Rummel. He married Bertha Thorson on Oct. 26, 1957, in Madison, Minn. He served in the C.C.C. in 1937, worked for Vulter Air Craft In Downey, Calif., from 1939-1943. He served in the U. S. Air Force from 1943 -1946 during World War 11. He belonged to the Springfield American Legion and Springfield Senior Citizens. He was a bricklayer and a 50-year member of the AFL-CIO. He worked with a contractor in Ortonville and for many years worked with Engelen Construction Company in Springfield. He retired 1981.

Martha Eggert, 90, of Winthrop, died wednesday, March 28, 2001, at New Um Medical Center.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday, at Zion Lutheran Church in Winthrop, with burial in the Winthrop Cemetery,
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today, at Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel, Winthrop; and at the church Saturday, one hour prior to the service.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Geraldine and Ruben Bergs of Winthrop; grandson, Daryl Berg and wife Katherine of Sleepy Eye; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Ella Pagel of Winthrop and Marvel and Roy Johnson, both of Winthrop; a sister-in-law, Ruth Grochow of Maple Plain; and nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Emma Grochow; husband, Fred Eggert on Nov. 6, 1976; brothers, Fred, Arthur, Henry and Herbert Grochow; and sisters, Mabel Schlender and Elizabeth Grunewaldt.
She was born April 25, 1910, in Bismarck Township, Sibley County, to Herman and Emma (Lickfett) Grochow. She attended school in Bismarck Township. She married Fred Eggert on Oct. 30, 1930, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bismarck Township. They retired in January of 1969 and moved to Winthrop. She entered the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center last year in 2000. She belonged to Zion Lutheran Church in Winthrop.
