W. "Bill" Maldwyn Owens, 89, of Butternut Township, died Saturday, April 28, 2001 at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
Services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Lake Crystal, with burial in Lake Crystal Cemetery.
Visitationwill be 2-5 p.m. Monday at Lake Crystal Mortuary and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Memorials are preferred to First Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his brother, Newton Owens of rural Lake Crystal; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law.
He was born July 30,1911, in New Ulm, to Calvin and Jane Alice (Hughes) Owens. He farmed and lived in the Butternut Township area. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a charter member of Lake Crystal Choralaires, and had belonged to the New Urn Radio Club.

Hilmer F. Wendland, 83 of Winthrop, died on Friday, April 27, 2001, at Sibley Medical Center in Arlington.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Winthrop, with burial in the Winthrop Cemetery with full military rites by the Winthrop Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday and 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Dalin-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Winthrop, and one hour prior to services at the church.
He is survived by his wife Leorda of Winthrop; daughters Donna and Bernie Schewe of Lebanon, Ky., Joyce and Roger Mathews of Glencoe, and Carol Jean Wendland of Arlington; five grandchildren; sisters Agnes Tietz of Glencoe and Agatha and Ellsworth Schwarzrock of Olivia; brother Arvid and Kay Wendland of Blue Earth; sister-in-law Marion Wendland of New Ulm; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Ellsworth; sister Luella in infancy, and brother-in-law Elmer Tietz.
He was born July 30, 1917, in Penn Township, McLeod County, to Louis and Minnie (Bussler) Wendland. He grew up in Penn Township, where he attended country school. He entered the U. S. Army and served during WWII. He married Leorda Bruns on April 16, 1950, in Gibbon. They lived and farmed in Transit Township, Sibley County, and Hilmer also worked at Glencoe Manufacturing for 11 years. They retired in 1979 and continued to live on the farm. He did carpentry work before the couple moved to Winthrop in 1992. Hilmer was a former member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Penn Township where he served on the church council and as Sunday School superintendent and teacher for 17 years. He also was caretaker of the church cemetery. At the time of his death, he was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Winthrop and a member of Winthrop American Legion Post 314.

Robert Gustafson, 80, of Madelia, died on Friday, April 27, 2001, at the Madelia Community Hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madelia; burial location has not been determined.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday at Pilgrim Funeral Home in Madelia and one hour prior to church service.
Robert is survived by his wife Gladys, Madelia; daughters Emily and Bill Johnston of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Margaret Portner of New Ulm; son Raymond (Randy) and Sherri Gustafson of Madelia; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and brother Stanley and Dorothy Gustafson of Eagan.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was born on Sept. 17, 1920, to William and Edith (Hubbard) Gustafson of rural Lake Crystal. He graduated from Madelia High School in 1938. He worked in road construction for C.C. Nelson Co. of Brainerd for several years. He married Gladys Ellingsberg in Madelia. He worked for Dry Zero Company in Chicago for two years before returning to farm in rural Madelia and rural Bancroft, Iowa. He retired in 1988 and moved to Madelia. He had served on the Fieldon Township Board and the Region Nine Development Commission.

Dean W. Heimendinger, 84, of Lamberton, died Friday, April 27, 2001, at Valley View Manor, Lamberton.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Walnut Grove City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Sturm Funeral Home, Lamberton.
He is survived by sons, Gary Dean of Des Plaines, Ill. and Gene Lee of Spice Wood, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Gene Kieper of Stillwater, special niece Dianne and her husband Arlin Anderson of Walnut Grove; grandson; great nieces and nephews; brothers and sisters-in-law, Leo and Grace of Pardeeville, Wis., and Ray and Ethel of Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Gladys in 1980 and brother Russell Jr.
He was born Feb. 3, 1917 to Russell and Mayme (Weer) Heimendinger in George, Iowa. He worked for Worthmore Icecream in Slayton, a farm near Roound Lake, and then for Interstate Power in Fulda. He married Stella Maciolek and in 1945. He moved to Minneapolis and worked at the Schweigert meat packing plant. He married Gladys Reese on Nov. 30, 1974 in Walnut Grove. The couple retired and moved to Lamberton in 1978.
He was a member of the Fides Masonic Lodge 246, the Eastern Star and a Boy Scout leader.

Frieda Friedrich, 92, of Springfield, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Springfield Medical Center.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield, with burial in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Percy and Mary Ann Hansen of Hutchinson; daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Gene Hammermeister of St. Louis Park; daughter-in-law, Darlene Hansen of Morgan; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Chester Hansen in 1963 and Lester Friedrich in 1980; son, Alvin Hansen; sisters, Ida Hoppe, Ella Freitag, Emma Williams, Ann Johnson, Louise Zamzow, Lillian Gehrt and Mabel Mude; and brothers, Emil, Edwin and William.
She was born April 19, 1909, in Three Lakes Township, Redwood County, to Julius and Amelia (Block) Zamzow. She attended country schools. She married Chester Hansen on July 3, 1934, in Springfield. They farmed north of Springfield from 1934 to 1963, then moved to St. Louis Park. He died in 1963. She married Lester Friedrich on July 3, 1968, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Springfield. They lived in Springfield. Lester died in 1980. She lived in Springfield until 1995, when she moved to Hutchinson and later became a resident at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield in 1997. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid.

Wilbert 'Bill' C. Kastens, 79, of Nicollet died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at the St. Peter Community Health Care Center in St. Peter.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Peter with burial in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in rural Nicollet.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Peter and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at church on Wednesday.
The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Nicollet is in charge of the arrangements.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lou Ann and Mark Blais of Nicollet; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Sandy Kastens of Watertown, Wis., William and Beth Kastens of St. Peter, Gene and Karen Kastens of Sanger, Texas, and Wayne and Chris Kastens of Mosinee, Wis.; 15 grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Kastens of St. Peter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice Kastens on Sept. 9, 1996; daughter, Betty Ann Kastens; sisters, Alma Kastens, Anna Tahms, and Amanda Stolt; and by brothers, Harold, Edward, and Walter Kastens.
He was born Jan. 14, 1922, in Nicollet County to Fredrich and Othillie (Schwartz) Kastens. He married Alice L. Matzke on June 3, 1944, in Mankato. They farmed in rural Nicollet for seven years and then lived in Mankato for six years where he worked in road construction. They moved to St. Peter where they owned and operated Alice and Bill's Cafe until 1988 when they moved to Nicollet. Wilbert moved to the Wilds Apartments in St. Peter six months ago. He became a resident of the St. Peter Community Health Care Center six weeks ago. He was a member of the St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Peter and the Christian Labor Union.
The family prefers memorials to be given to the St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Peter.

Henry H. "Jerry" Lentz, 86, of Gaylord, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Sibley Medical Center, Arlington.
Services are 10:30 a.m. today at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Gaylord, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is one hour before the service today at the church.
Arrangements are handled by Fenske Family Funeral Home, Gaylord.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Sheldon and Karen Lentz of Pillager; a daughter and son-in-law, Eileen and Harold Pauly of Redwood Falls; four grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Edna Kremer of Watertown, S.D., Beatrice Koester of Glencoe, Marilyn and Myron Bandow of Gibbon, Barbara and Ronald Rieke of Gibbon and Evelyn Herschman of Glendale; and brothers and sisters-in-law, August and Ardella of Fairfax and Herbert and Betty of Waconia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Emilie in October 1999; sister, Alma Duenow; and brothers, Otto, Bill, and Dan Lentz
He was born Jan. 20, 1915 in Henry, S.D., to Edward and Mabel (Jaehn) Lentz. He attended Codington County School in Henry. He married Emilie Hansch on Nov. 24, 1944, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gaylord. From 1968-1980, he worked in construction and drainage for Eric Johnson prior to operating his own business; Drainage Inc. in Winthrop. He also worked with Gaylord Development and was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Carl A. Mason Jr., 39, of New Ulm, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at his home in New Ulm.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Olson Funeral Home, Truman, with burial in Westford Cemetery near Truman.
Visitation is 9 a.m. until services Tuesday at the funeral home.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Norma and Marlin Bursell of Truman; his father and stepmother, Carl and Donna Mason of Cave Junction, Ore.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Daniel and Carrie of Las Vegas, Nev. and David and Gaye of Gillette, Wyo.; and numerous other relatives.
He is preceded in death by a infant son and his grandparents.
He was born July 29, 1961, in Van Nuys, Calif., to Carl and Norma (Ray) Mason. He attended school in Grants Pass, Ore., and lived in California and Florida before moving to Minnesota in 1999. He worked with his uncle in the moving business and later as a cook in Florida.

Susan Pelzel, 97, of Wabasso, died Saturday, April 28, 2001, at Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Wabasso with burial in St. Anne's Catholic Cemetery in Wabasso.
Visitation is 4:30-8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at St. Anne's Catholic Church; and Tuesday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
The Redwood Valley Funeral Home, Redwood Falls is handling arrangements.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Donald Bushard of Hopkins, Margie and Darrel Baune of Wabasso; sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene and Shirley Gores of Redwood Falls, and Kenneth and Karen Pelzel of Jefferson, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Carl Gores of Morgan; and sisters-in-law, Florence Kramer and Caroline Pelzel, both of Wabasso, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1965; brothers, Peter and Sylvester Gores; sisters, Marie Pelzel and Anastasia Kettner and her parents.
She was born Sept. 14, 1903, in rural Clements to Joseph and Mary (Hornick) Gores. She married Alphonse Pelzel on June 21, 1927 in Clements. They farmed near Clements until 1955. They bought the Lucan Liquor Store which they owned until he died in 1965. She moved to Wabasso and worked as a nurse's aide at the Wabasso Healthcare Center until 1978.

Herman Vossen, 83, of Windom, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Windom Area Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. Wednesday and 9:30-11 a.m. Thursday at the church. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Arrangements are with Anderson-Schmidt Funeral Home, Windom.

Theodore M. "Tony" Antony, 80, formerly of New Ulm and Kenosha, Wis., died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at St. Francis Hospital.
Services are 11:30 a.m. Monday at Hansen-Lendemen Funeral, Kenosha, Wis.
Visitation will be Monday at the funeral home, 90 minutes prior to the service.
He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Melanie of Kenosha, Mark and Nancy of Kenosha and Harold of Austin, Texas; daughters, Elizabeth of Lancaster, Calif. and Martha and Samir of Milwaukee; brother Michael and wife Mary Jane of Kenosha; sisters, Marcella Shores of Urbana, Ill., Donna May Ruby of Sleepy Eye, Carol and Dan Sustrick of Kansas City, Kan., and 10 grandchildren.
He was born April 7, 1921, in Watertown, S.D., to the late Michael and Antoinette (Thielen) Antony. He was educated in Waverly, S.D. and in New Ulm. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Tech 4 from March 29, 1943 to Dec. 6, 1946. He moved to Kenosha in 1949. On Oct. 11, 1953, he married Martha Jane K. Revord in Kenosha. She preceded him in death on Sept. 8, 1997. He owned and operated Town-N-Country Liquors and the Sunnyside Club. He retired in 1994. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Chamber of Commerce.

Anna Crawford, 96, of Hector, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Hutchinson Area Health Care.
Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swedlanda Lutheran Church, rural Hector with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday at Hughes Funeral Home, Hector, and at the church, one hour prior to the service.

Anna Crawford, 96, of Hector, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at Hutchinson Area Health Care.

She is survived by her daughters, Joan Curtiss of Hutchinson and Jane and Mel Froehlich of Kenyon; six grandchildren; 20 great grandchildrcn; one great, great grandchild; a sister, Minnie Buboltz of Bird Island; a brother-in-law, Roy and Hilda Crawford; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband James, and brothers and sisters Henry, Gothfred, George, Rudolph, Fred, Algot, Gerda, and Lillie.
She was born Jan. 9, 1905, in Martinsburg Township, Renville County to Ephraim and Augusta (Johnson) Johnson. She grew up in Martinsburg Township and attended rural school. She graduated from Hector High School and attended the Minnesota School of Business.
On Aug. 29, 1930, she married James Crawford. They lived and farmed in Martinsburg Township until their retirement. He died in 1976. She lived on the farm until moving to live with her daughter Joan. She was a member of Swedlanda Lutheran Church, active with Ladies Aid and aided in spiritual teaching.

Edward Knakmuhs, 75, of Walnut Grove died Wednesday May 30,2001 at Valley View Manor in Lamberton.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Walnut Grove with burial in St. Paul's Calvary Cemetery in Walnut Grove.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday and 9-10 a.m. Monday at the Jacobson Funeral Home, Walnut Grove with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Walnut Grove; sons, Michael and wife Diane of Brainerd, Paul and wife Nancy of Lamberton, Mark and wife Jody of Rapid City, S.D. and Steven and wife Robin of Tyndall, S.D.; daughters, Mrs. Jerome (Bernice) Batalden of Thief River Falls, Mrs. Roger (Julia) Paluck of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 20 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; brothers, Richard of Walnut Grove, Lloyd of Revere, Floyd of Westbrook, and George (Jim) of Fairfax, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Duane (Virene) Shea of Walnut Grove, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceeded in death by his parents; a son, Todd Eric and two brothers, John and Howard.
He was born July 13,1925 in Redwood County to Paul and Effie (Jackson) Knakmuhs, and received his formal education in rural school in the area. He worked on a farm as a farm hand for several years and enlisted in the Army in 1944. He married Dorothy Lenhoff April 7,1949 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Walnut Grove. They farmed at Clinton, before the couple moved back to a farm north of Revere. In 1977 they couple purchased a hardware store in Walnut Grove and operated it until 1982. They moved to Walnut Grove in 1993.
He was admitted to the Valley View Manor May 22, 2001. He was a member of St. Pauls Catholic Church, the American Legion in Revere, The V.F.W. in Westbrook, the Knights of Columbus, and a past board member of North Hero Township.

Sheldon Steffer, 69, of Arlington, died Thursday, May 31, 2001 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Arlington United Methodist Church with burial in Arlington Public Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the Fenske Funeral Home in Arlington, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene of Arlington; daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Michael Wavra of Fargo, N.D., Susanne and John Glawe of Alexandria, Lorie and Rick Rose of Arlington, Lisa and Bruce Courteau of Oak Grove; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Sherry; 12 grandchildren; his mother, Gertrude of Arlington; a sister-in-law., Ella of Arlington; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Archie, and brother, Gerald.
He was born on Jan. 13, 1932 in Green Isle Township to Archie and Gertrude (Muehlhausen) Steffer. He was a 1950 graduate of Arlington High School. He farmed in the Arlington area all his life. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War from Dec.12, 1952 to Nov. 19, 1954. He served in Korea and Japan and was decorated with the Korean Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, and United Nations Service Medal.
On Oct. 19, 1957 he married Darlene Panning at Green Isle. He was a life member of VFW Post 6031 of Arlington and its drill team. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Post 37, member of National Association of Atomic Veterans, Masonic Lodge #42 or Glencoe, Scotish Rite and Zuhrah Shrine of Minneapolis and the Green Isle Lions Club.
