Larry W. Haugland Sr.
Services were held earlier this week for Larry W. Haugland Sr. The former Seventh Street resident died Thurs., Mar. 1, 2001 in a Duluth hospital. He was 83.

He was born Feb. 17, 1918, in Midway Township to John J. and Ella (Olson) Haugland. A lifelong Proctor and Duluth resident, Larry was an employee of Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway for 43 years, retiring as welder foreman in 1978. He married Ruth Stafford Jan. 14, 1961, in Proctor. He was a life member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Union. Larry loved his family and enjoyed the cabin and fishing at Pequaywan Lake and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth on Feb. 3, 2000, and a brother Bud.

Survivors include sons Larry Haugland Jr. of Duluth, Timothy (Sue) Sullivan of Stillwater, Minn., Paul (June) Sullivan of Eveleth, Peter (Claudia) Sullivan of Proctor and Patrick (Peggy) Sullivan of Cromwell, a daughter Peggy (Clarence) Douville of Wrenshall, grandchildren Steven, Ryan, Kimberly, Jeffrey, Jamie, Nicole, Maria and Christina, and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Beatrice M. Radzak
Anthony Radzak and Patrick Radzak of Saginaw are mourning the death of their mother, Beatrice M. Radzak. She died Mon., Feb. 26, 2001, in a Duluth hospital. She was 81.

She was born in Casselton N.D. She was a graduate of St. Francis School of Nursing-Breckenridge, Minn. In 1940, she married Chester Andrew Radzak in Casselton. Beatrice was employed as a registered nurse at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth from 1940-1970 working the last 17 years as a nursing supervisor. Beatrice was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior.

She is also survived by her husband Chester A. of Superior, a daughter, five other sons, a brother, five sisters, 25 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in the Polish Catholic Cemetery, Duluth.

Paul James Lee Sr.
Paul J. Lee Jr. is mourning the death of his father, Paul James Lee Sr. He died Wed., Feb. 28 in Duluth. He was 77.

He was born in Duluth. He had been a Duluth resident for most of his life and attended St. James School and Cathedral High School until joining the Marine Corps. He served in the Pacific during World War II, receiving two Purple Hearts. Paul married Jean B. Stevens in Carlsbad, Calif. He had been the owner and operator of Mac’s Tavern for 15 years.

Paul was a member of the West Duluth American Legion Post and a former member of St. James Catholic Church.

Paul also is survived by a daughter Elaine (Dale) Mundle of Hermantown, two other sons David A. (Mary Anne) of Esko and Kerry (Mary) of Duluth, two brothers, a sister, nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

John I. Mammen
John I. Mammen, who lived in Proctor for several years, died Sat., Mar. 3, 2001 in Grand Rapids. He was 94.

He was born Nov. 26, 1906, in Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1924. He had also lived in Iowa and Milwaukee, Wis., before moving to Cohasset and Grand Rapids. He had worked for the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway, managed Hampton Gardens Apartments in Milwaukee and worked for Merchants Police Security in Milwaukee. He attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Grand Rapids.

John was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy in 1970, several brothers, and a sister.

He is survived by his children Joseph (Barbara) of Cohasset, John “Jim” of Cedarburg, Wis., and Judith (Jan) Bruns of Greenfield, Wis., nine grandchildren, and a sister Fenna (Harm) Evarwein in Germany.

Interment was in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Milwaukee.

Paul Baxter Schmittou
Scott Schmittou of Saginaw is mourning the death of his father, Paul Baxter Schmittou. He died Sat., Mar. 3, 2001 in his Duluth home after succumbing to liver cancer. He was 54.

He was born in Baltimore, Md. Paul was an Air Force veteran stationed at the Duluth Air Base from 1964 to 1968. He was employed first with General Motors in Detroit and then with USG Interiors in Cloquet.

He is also survived by his wife of 33 years Irene, two other sons, two daughters, two grandsons, and a granddaughter.

Madelyn E. Pearson
Madelyn Jensen of Saginaw is mourning the death of her mother Madelyn E. Pearson. She died Sat., Mar. 3, 2001 in her Duluth home. She was 84.

She was born in Duluth and had been a lifelong Duluth resident. She was employed as a postal worker for the U.S. Postal Service.

She is also survived by her sister, four other daughters, three sons, 30 grandchildren, and 42 great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Mildred “Millie” Strom
Mildred “Millie” Strom, who was a Missabe Miss during World War II, died Sat., Mar. 10, 2001, from injuries she sustained from a traffic accident the day before. She was 75.

Millie was born in Duluth Sept. 1, 1925, to Louis and Ann (Johnson) Ferrario. She graduated from Denfeld High School in 1943. She married Robert W. Strom in Proctor on May 27, 1944. She worked for the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway during World War II, and St. Luke’s Hospital and Nopeming Nursing Home as a dietary aide.

She had been involved with Youth Fellowship at Forbes United Methodist Church for several years. She was a former member of the Proctor Garden Club, American Legion Auxiliary and a member of a birthday club. Millie loved to read and go on morning walks. She also loved flower gardening and walking on Ormund Beach in Florida. Millie was very health conscious and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son Robert W. Strom, Jr.; her parents; and brothers Richard and Robert.

She is survived by her husband Robert W., Sr.; a daughter Susan (Brian) Reppe of Duluth; a daughter-in-law Cathy Strom of Saginaw; a sister Irene Ferrario of Duluth; grandchildren Brent, Terri Jo and Dawn Reppe, Rob Strom III, and Andrea (Allan) Kelly; great-grandchildren Bryce Kelly, Jesse Matthews and Savanna and Nicholas Reppe, a niece Rene (Kevin) Bergman of Bloomington, Minn.; grand-nephews Brian, Carl, Craig and Adam Bergman; several cousins, nieces and nephews, and her special friend Scrappy.

Anne M. Johnson
Anne M. Johnson, formerly of West Fifth St. in Proctor and also Arbutus Dr., died Sat., Mar. 3, 2001, in her daughter’s home in Dexter, Mich. She was 87.

Anne was a former member of St. Rose Church prior to moving to Duluth and becoming a member of St. James Church.

She was born in Duluth to Peter and Rosalie Kujawa in 1913, and lived most of her life in Duluth and Proctor, plus cities in Mich.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leonard (former DM&IR employee), her son Ronald, five brothers Anthony, Michael, John, Leo and Stephen Kujawa, and four sisters Veronica McBlain, Sophie Pates, Vandelyn Mrozik and Theresa Saunders.

She is survived by a daughter Barbara McClure of Dexter, Mich., sisters Mary Ellison of Duluth and Martha Silletto of Las Vegas, sister-in-law Louise Kujawa, plus 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews (including Jerry Mrozik, Jackie (Mrozik) Mann, Jim Mrozik, of Proctor, and Marilyn (Kujawa) Lee of Esko.

Burial was in the Polish Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Florabel H. Higlee
Florabel H. Higlee of Nopeming Road, formerly of So. Second St., Proctor died Thurs., Mar. 8, 2001, in Nopeming Health Care, She was 94.

She was born in Mankato, Minn. in 1906 to Frank and Rose (Mayer) Brown. A Duluth area resident since 1940, she had worked as a seamstress at Garon Knitting Mills and Vantage Designs. She was a homemaker and a former member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Proctor.

She is survived by three sons; two brothers; a sister; 14 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Theresa Pauline Forsman
Services were held for Theresa Pauline Forsman. She died Mon., Mar. 5, 2001. She was 89.

The Proctor resident was a lifelong member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Proctor, former Legion of Mary member and a former member of St. Joseph’s Circle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Timothy and Alexina Gagnon; her husband of 61 years Arthur; sisters Claire, Bernadette, Celina and Elizabeth; and a brother Timothy.

She is survived by her children Dennis (Kathryn) Forsman of Proctor, Janice (Tracy) Gran of Winterport, Maine and Julie (Fred) Turbin of Fridley, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters; and two brothers.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery.

Deann Louise Reinke
Services have been held for Deann Louise Reinke. She died Thurs., Mar. 8, 2001 in her Ugstad Rd. home. She was 48.

She was born in Duluth to Fred and Evelyn (Wall) Reinke. Deann was a lifelong area resident.

She is survived by her foster family Jim and Sandy Andler, the staff at the Andler home and West End DT&H, and many friends.
