Berniece Epple, 77, of rural St. George died Sunday, March 24, 2002 at the Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, April 6, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. at the St. George Catholic Church in West Newton Township, Nicollet County, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon until time of the service at the church. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Berniece is survived by her sisters, Bonnie Reitter of Las Vegas, and Mary Mills and her husband, Nyle of Windsor, Colo.; by many nieces and nephews; and also by her faithful companion, her poodle, Mitzi. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Berniece was born June 15, 1924 in West Newton Township, Nicollet County to John and Eleanor (Huelskamp) Epple. She graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1942 and St. Catherine's College in St. Paul in 1946. She then received her 'wings' from the McConnel Flight School in Minneapolis. She was a flight attendant with Northwest Airlines for over fifty years, traveling all seven continents. In 1999 she was honored with the Presidents Award for her many years of service to Northwest Airlines. She enjoyed flower gardening. She was a member of the St. George Catholic Church in West Newton Township, Nicollet County.
The family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society or the Brown County Humane Society.

Joanne Reckner, 49. of Ankeny, Iowa and formerly of New Ulm, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at her home.
Services will be 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial at a later date.
Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
Joanne is survived by her husband, Jon Reckner of Ankeny, Iowa; parents, John and Betty (Portner) Gleisner of Hackensack, MN; her sister, Beverly Rolloff of Chaska, her brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael and Sharon Deinken of New Ulm, Bruce and Mary Deinken of Bloomington and Brian and Mary Deinken of New Ulm; 12 nieces and nephews, and her many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Joanne was preceded in death by her infant son, Andrew John.
Joanne was born on January 22, 1953 in Sleepy Eye, MN. She graduated from public school in New Ulm and also graduated from Nurses Training at the Union Hospital in New Ulm. She married Jon Reckner on July 1, 1989 at her parents' lake home in Hackensack. She worked for many years as a nurse at the hospitals in New Ulm and in various nursing homes in Mankato, Canton, Ohio and in the Ankeny, Iowa area.
Joanne will be remembered for her loving care for all her patients and her love and devotion to her family and friends.
She will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Richard Puchner, 66, of 1411 10th South Street in New Ulm, died Saturday evening, March 30, 2002, at his home.
Private interment services with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations will be held at the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. A celebration of Dick's life will follow at the New Ulm Country Club. The Firle Funeral Home of New Ulm is handling the arrangements.
Richard John Puchner, the son of Roman and Eulalia (Rubey) Puchner, was born Oct. 21, 1935, in New Ulm. As a child, the family made their home in Brainerd, Lake City, and Madison, where he graduated from Madison High School in 1953. Later that year he entered the United States Navy, serving aboard the aircraft carrier Wasp as a dental tech. He met Barbara Hocking on Memorial Day 1963, and they were married 16 weeks later on Sept. 28, 1963, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Benton Harbor, Mich. Dick worked for Lancer's Men's Stores in Richfield. In 1966, he joined the New York Life Insurance Company and moved his family to New Ulm in 1974. He was a member of the New Ulm Rotary Club, and a member and past president of the New Ulm Country Club. Dick was affectionately given the nickname "Flipper" and was the owner and operator of Flipper's Bar & Grill.
Dick is survived by his wife Barb of New Ulm; daughters, Karen Kwiecinski of New Ulm, and Kristen and Curt Forbrook of New Ulm; sons, Michael Puchner of Atlanta, Ga., Steven Puchner and his wife Laura of Oak Harbor, Mich.; five grandchildren, Abigail Marie Kwiecinski, Sarah Kate and Christopher John Puchner, and Connor Travis and Cooper Gene Forbrook; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Dick and Barb Hocking of St. Joseph, Mich.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by New Ulm relatives, Joe and Minnie Schugel and their daughter Patricia, Flip and Techla Puchner and their son Bill.
If preferred, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the New Ulm Medical Center Home Health Care Program.

Alice Laura Polzin, 73, of Willmar, died Monday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar, with burial at Memorial Garden Cemetery in Windom.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
Arrangements are with the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar.
She is survived by sister, Leota Albrecht of Lamberton.
Alice Laura Polizin was born June 5, 1928, in Amboy Township, Cottonwood County, to William and Laura (Pieske) Polzin.

Jeanette Forster, age 89, of Selah Convalescent Home passed away on March 27, 2002, from diabetes complications.
Jeanette was born Dec. 3,1912, to Michael and Elizabeth (Roiger) Sturm at their homestead near Springfield. She received her education at St. Raphael's Catholic School in Springfield. On Sept. 10, 1934, she married Edward J. Forster in Springfield, at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, and together made their home at Comfrey, where they engaged in farming. In 1948 they moved to Outlook, Wash., where they farmed for 34 years. After her husband's passing Jeanette became a resident of Selah Convalescent home.
Jeanette was active at the home helping decorate, caring for flowers, making crafts, playing cards and bingo with friends. She had a special fondness for fishing. She loved her resident friends and staff as family. She enjoyed reading, music and painting pictures for her family. She took pride in her earlier years, cooking for family gatherings and holidays. She was a homemaker, devoted wife, mother, and she cherished her children and grandchildren.
Jeanette was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and a charter member of the Young Ladies Institute of Selah. She was a past member of St. Mary's auxiliary society and the altar society.
She is survived by her son Edward M. Forster and his wife Theresa (McFadden) Forster of Ephrata, Wash; daughter Eileen (Forster) King and her husband Duane King of Yakima, Wash; five grandchildren; seven greatgrand children; and sisters, Emelia Hammerschmidt of Springfield, Stella Rathman of Sleepy Eye, and sister-in-law Angie (Schroepfer) Sturm of Springfield. Her parents preceded her in death as well as her husband Edward; sisters, Elizabeth Kinservik, Adela Klucas and Theresa Tauer; brothers, Roman and Michael (Mikie) Sturm.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11a.m., April 6, 2002, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Selah, Wash. Viewing will be held before the mass from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at the church. On Friday, April 5, 2002, viewing is 3 - 8 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside, Wash. Interment will be at the Zillah Washington Cemetery. Memorials for Jeanette may be made to the Selah Convalescent Home Activity Fund.

David Suess, 53, of rural New Ulm, died Monday, April 1, 2002, at the Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Thursday and 7:30-10 a.m. Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a combined rosary by the St. John's Catholic Aid Council and the Knights of Columbus Council 1076 at 6 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. both Thursday at the funeral home.
David is survived by his wife, Sandy Suess of rural New Ulm; parents, Erwin and Monica Suess of North Mankato; a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Jeremy Pieper of Mankato; sons and daughter-in-law, Robert Suess of St. Cloud, Scott Suess of New Ulm, Mark and Rachael Suess of New Ulm, and Tom Suess and his fiancee, Jenna Schmitt both of New Ulm; granddaughters, Madison and Katelyn Suess; sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Gary Gleisner of New Ulm, Sue and Bob McAdams of Mendota Heights, and Lori and Troy Parsons of Madison Lake; brothers and sisters-in-law, Duane and Denise Suess of Clive, Iowa, and Loran and Chris Suess of Hanska; also by sixteen nieces and nephews, and six great-nieces and great-nephews; his mother-in-law, Lorraine Meyer of New Ulm; and a sister-in-law, Alice Fischer of New Ulm.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dora and Joe Suess, and Wolfgang and Bertha Spaeth; his father-in-law, Fred A. Meyer; and a brother-in-law, Ronald J. Fischer.
David was born Feb. 9, 1949, in Sleepy Eye to Erwin and Monica (Spaeth) Suess. He attended St. John's Catholic School in Searles and graduated in 1967 from the Cathedral High School in New Ulm. On June 10, 1969, he married Sandra Meyer at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. After marriage they farmed in the Searles and Hanska area. David played concertina with the Erwin Suess and the Hoolerie Dutchmen, the Lester Schuft and the Country Dutchmen of Hutchinson, and many other old time bands. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1076, the St. John's Catholic Aid Council, and the German Bohemian Heritage Singers.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm or to donor's choice.

Percy Balbach, 87, of Springfield, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Springfield.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. A Masonic memorial service is 7:45 p.m. Friday at the church.
Arrangements are handled by Anderson-Schmidt-LaCanne Funeral Home of Windom.

Arnold V. "Dutch" Meyer, 73, of Sleepy Eye, died Monday, April 1, 2002, at the Mayo Health Care Center, Rochester, Minn.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2002 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery with military rites by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, continuing Thursday from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. A parish prayer service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife, Georglyn Meyer of Sleepy Eye; children, Steven and wife Sara Meyer of Mankato, Wendy and husband Wayne Fox of New Ulm, Georgette and husband Mike Schumacher of Wabasha, Tracy and husband Chuck Meyer of Sleepy Eye and Chris and husband Brian Bravo of Sleepy Eye; 15 grandchildren; and sisters, Faye and husband Jack Von Bokern of Tracy and Darlene and Dave Vanek of Hopkins. Dutch was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marilyn and twin granddaughters, Sadie and Sada.
Dutch was born Oct. 22, 1928, in Fairmount N.D., the son of Rudolph and Velda (Reese) Meyer. He grew up and graduated from high school in Fairmount. After completing his schooling, Dutch served in the United States Marine Corps for two years. He was honorably discharged and returned to Fairmount, where he worked in the area for a few years. He later was employed by the USDA as a poultry and grading inspector in Fairmount and later Faribault, Minn. He married Georglyn Trcka on Oct. 2,1954, in Faribault. The couple made their home in Faribault until moving to Sleepy Eye In 1957. Dutch continued to work for the USDA at A.J. Pietrus & Sons in Sleepy Eye until retiring in 1983. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Sleepy Eye Golf Club and the Sleepy Eye American Legion.
Dutch loved to play golf with his friends and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

John A. Callanan, 88, of Comfrey, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Comfrey, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday and 7:30-10 a.m. Saturday at Sturm Funeral Home in Comfrey. There will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
He is survived by a sister, Rose Erickson of Minneapolis, and many nieces and nephews.
He was born Oct. 25, 1913, in Delton Township, Cottonwood Township, to Richard and Teresa (Savage) Callanan.

Cecilia Hartl, 95, formerly of 601 Center Street in New Ulm, died Monday, April 1, 2002, at the St. Francis Home in Santa Ana, Calif., where she had been a resident for the past three years.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm, with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. Friday and will continue from 7:30 - 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Lil is survived by a daughter, Patricia Sandhoefner and her husband Russel of Villa Park, Calif.; a son, Francis "Jack" Hartl and his wife Pat of Mission Viejo, Calif.; grandchildren, Michelle, Jon, Patrice, and Pamela; and by great grandchildren; Brian, Berry, Cindy, Sarah, and Kenneth. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Francis "Dutch" Hartl in 1958; a sister, Priska Haines; and by brothers, Herbert "Chick" Zischka and John Zischka.
Lil was born June 26, 1906, in New Ulm, to John and Anna (Martinka) Zischka. She graduated from the New Ulm Public High School. On April 24, 1929, she married Francis Edward Hartl in New Ulm. She had lived all of her life in New Ulm until 1996, when she moved to California to be near her children. During her life she had worked as a salesperson for 25 years at Herberger's Department Store in New Ulm. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm.

Gordon Lammers, 74, died from cancer on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at the New Ulm Medical Center.
Services are 2 p.m., Saturday, April 6, at St. John's Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with the Reverend Wayne Laitinen officiating. Burial is in the New Ulm City Cemetery, Soldiers Rest Section. Visitation is Friday, April 5, from 4 - 8 p.m., Saturday, April 6, from 7:30 -10:30 a.m. at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm, and from 1 - 2 p.m. on Saturday at the church.
Mr. Lammers was born to Heinrich and Helena (Von Hagel) Lammers on March 10, 1928, at Madelia. He attended District 37 country school through 8th grade in Linden Township, Brown County. He then graduated from the St. Paul School of Agriculture in St. Paul. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 - 1954. He married Janice Ruehl on June 9, 1956, at the St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church at St. Peter. They resided in North Mankato where he worked at Hubbard Milling and farmed the family farm near Butternut. Later, they moved to the family farm near Butternut where he continued farming and custom farming.
Farming was a joy in his life. He also enjoyed collecting antique cars and tractors. He took great pride in his cars, and drove them in many local parades. He was a long-time member of Farm Bureau and served on the Brown County Board of Directors. He took an active role in his church, and served there in many capacities.
Mr. Lammers is survived by his wife; a son, Bruce, and his wife Renae, of New Ulm; a daughter, Brenda and her husband Denny Hartman, of Lake Crystal; two very special granddaughters, Jessica and Erin Leiding of Lake Crystal; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Dale and Doris Felmlee and Dwaine and Millie Felmlee; and many nieces and nephews. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

Vincent J. Stadtherr, 89, formerly of Gibbon, Minn., died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at Saint Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.
A funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, April 2 at 10:30 am at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin, Minn., with the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating. Burial in Calvary Cemetery in Austin followed the mass.
Born Jan. 22, 1913, in Gibbon, Minn., he graduated from Gibbon High School and attended the University of Minnesota. He played semi-pro baseball in Gibbon as an outfielder, and maintained a lifelong interest in sports. On June 6, 1941, he entered the Army and served as an officer in New Guinea and the Phillippines during World War II. On March 29, 1948, he married Bernice Kelly in DeGraff, Minn. In 1948, they moved to Austin, Minn. where Mr. Stadtherr worked as a meat inspector for the U. S. Department of Agriculture. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Veterans of Foreign Wars. An avid gardener, he was a flower hybridizer and exhibitor with a particular interest in gladiolus, and for many years exhibited prize-winning gladioli at local, state and regional flower shows.
Survivors include his wife Bernice, a son, Mark (Joan Brennecke) of Granger, Ind.; a daughter, Joan (Gregory) Bissen of Maple Grove, Minn.; and two grandchildren, Patrick and Katie Bissen. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Stadtherr and Genevieve (Bushard) Stadtherr, lifelong residents of Gibbon, Minn., two brothers, Wilfred (Tony) and Richard, and four sisters, Florence (Esser), Irene (Franta), Patronella (Peterson) and Gertrude.
Mayer Funeral Home in Austin was in charge of arrangements. Memorials can be sent to St. Augustine Catholic Church, 405 4th Street NW, Austin, MN 55912-3091.

Adelia M. Rueckert, 99, formerly of 915 - 2nd North Street in New Ulm died Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM Monday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm. Visitation will be 4 - 8 PM Sunday and 7:30 - 10:30 AM Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. The Christian Mother's Society will pray the rosary at 4 PM Sunday at the Cathedral. The St. Elizabeth's Catholic Aid Society will pray the rosary at 6 PM and there will be a parish prayer service at 7 PM both Sunday at the funeral home.
Adelia is survived by her daughter, Jeanette Lee of New Ulm; sons and daughters-in-law, Delmar and Joyce Rueckert and Donald and Kathleen "Kitty" Rueckert, all of New Ulm ; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren; and a brother Alfred Brey of Hutchinson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Albin Rueckert on January 6, 1964; a son Dennis Rueckert; four sisters; and two brothers.
Adelia was born June 19, 1902 in Lafayette Township, Nicollet County to Wolfgang and Frances (Gruber) Brey. She married Albin Rueckert on August 29, 1928 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Ulm. After marriage they lived in New Ulm then moving to Renville in 1941. They moved back to New Ulm 1947 where she worked for Woolworth's Department Store until she retired in 1965. She then worked for the Kaiserhoff Restaurant in the kitchen until 1987. She was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, the St. Elizabeth's Catholic Aid Society, the Christian Mother's Society, the American Legion and the VFW Auxilaries.

Percy Balbach, 87, of Springfield, died Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, Springfield, with burial to follow in the Springfield City Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 - 8 p.m. today, and 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Arrangements are with the Anderson-Schmidt-LaCanne Funeral Home of Windom.
He is survived by his wife Erna of Springfield; brothers, Ward Balbach of Mankato; and Lynn Balbach of Springfield; and sister Dorothy Schenk of Springfield.
Percy Balbach was born April 24, 1914, in Stately Township to George and Lillie (Potter) Balbach.

Marion Otto Schwarzrock, 79, of Springfield, died Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. today at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield, with burial to follow in the Springfield City Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. today at St. John Lutheran Home Chapel, and will continue 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield.
He is survived by his sister, Anita Dorow of Springfield; and brother, Alfred Schwarzrock of Springfield.
Marion Otto Schwarzrock was born Feb. 19, 1923, to Ferdinand A. and Hattie (Rositzke) Schwarzrock in Burnstown Township near Springfield.

Francis Vincent Zender, 89, of St. James, died Wednesday at St. James Health Services Hospital in St. James.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in St. James, with burial to follow at the Calvary Cemetery, St. James. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. today, and 7:30 - 10 a.m. Saturday at the Sturm Funeral Home in St. James.
He is survived by sister, Dorothy O'Day of St. Paul.
Francis Vincent Zender was born July 3, 1912, to Nicholas L. and Emilie (Kelly) Zender in Butterfield.
