Ila A. Modlin, 82, of St. Paul and formerly of New Ulm, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at the Lyngblomsten Care Center in St. Paul.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 22, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm with burial in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.
Visitation will be 9 - 11 a.m., Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.
Ila is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Terry Sorenson of Eagan; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and by a brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Laura Richter of New Ulm.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clayton Modlin on April 28, 2000; and by her sister, Alice Steinhaus.
Ila was born April 23, 1921, in New Ulm to Clarence and Irma (Langhoff) Richter. She attended New Ulm Public Schools. She was united in marriage with Clayton Modlin on March 9, 1940, in New Ulm. After marriage they lived in New Ulm for a brief time and then moved to Grundy Center, Iowa. They then moved to Albert Lea where she worked for Wilson's Foods for 25 years until her retirement. They moved to Roberd's Lake in the early '80s near Faribault and then to Farmington in August of 1999. Ila loved to cook for family and friends. She and her husband enjoyed traveling. They wintered in McAllen, Texas. She was a member of the 1st Lutheran Church in Faribault.
Orlean S. Hass, 67 of Winthrop, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop.
Funeral services are 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 23, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Dryden Township, Mountville, rural Gaylord. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., today and continues 7:30-8 a.m., Wednesday from 7:30-8 a.m., at the Dalin Hantge Funeral Chapel in Winthrop; and one hour before the service at the church. There will be a prayer service at 7:45 p..m., today at the funeral chapel.
She is survived by her husband, Delford Hass of Winthrop; daughters, Beverly Stadtherr of Circle Pines and Sandra Anderson of Glencoe; one grandson; sisters, Shirley Stark of Buffalo Lake, and Mary Lou Otto of Winthrop.
Orlean Sarah Hass was born Aug. 15, 1935, in Bismarck Township, Sibley County, Minn., to Martin and Anna (Pagel) Becke.
Darwin L. Jones, 67, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Cambria, died Saturday, July 12, 2003, in Mesa.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 17, 2003, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mesa. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2003, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 70th and Babcock Trail, in Inver Grove Heights.
Darwin is survived by his wife Ruth Jones; children, Randy of South St. Paul, Terry of Gaithersburg, Ma., Bradley of Mahtomedi, and Laura Gleamza of Wheaton, Ill; three grandsons; and brother Ellis J. Jones of St. Peter.
Darwin L. Jones was born Dec. 30, 1935, in New Ulm, to Ellis P. and Edith Jones.
Ryan Nelson, 24, of 510 Sixth South Street in New Ulm, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm, as a result of complications from Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. today and 7:30 - 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Ryan is survived by his parents, Ross and Barbara Nelson of New Ulm; a brother, Derek of New Ulm; grandparents, Eugene and Marion Altmann Jr., of New Ulm, and Norman and Lorraine Nelson of Hanska; a great-grandmother, Bertha Altmann, a resident of the Lake Crystal Health Care Center; and by aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Eugene Altmann Sr., Myra and Fritz Bentzin, Hulda and James Jorgenson, and great-uncle, Jim Altmann.
Ryan was born Oct. 31, 1978, in New Ulm, to Ross and Barbara (Altmann) Nelson. He attended New Ulm Public Schools and was a 1997 graduate of New Ulm High School. He also attended Mankato State University. Ryan worked for an internet music magazine called Swizzle-Stick, where he critiqued new music and wrote a regular column for the magazine. Ryan also wrote several short stories and poems, which were published. Ryan was an Eagle Scout and also enjoyed writing, reading, music and gardening.
Elizabeth M. Schottenbauer, 101, of Redwood Falls, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls.
Services are 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 24, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Redwood Falls with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, at Nelson-Martin Funeral Home, Redwood Falls with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and continues Thursday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
She is survived by sons, Robert of Hereford, Ariz. and Michael of Hopewell, Va.; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; a great-great-granddaughter; and two stepgreat-grandsons.; two sisters, Leona Keleher of Omaha, Neb. and Madonna Jacoby of Sauk Rapids.
She was born Aug. 30, 1901, in Springfield to Philip and Marie (Filzen) Jacoby.
Brent Schrock, 43, of St. Croix Falls, Wis., died Monday, July 14, 2003, at St. Croix Regional Medical Center.
Brent was born in St. Croix Falls, on March 22, 1960. He graduated from St. Croix Falls High School in 1978. After graduating, Brent went to work as a foreman for E.J.M. Pipe Services in Lino Lakes.
He was recently married on May 10, 2003, to Kristin Ahlbrecht at Peace Lutheran Church.
Brent loved to hunt, fish, play softball and spend time with his children, family and friends. There is not a person who knew him that does not have a great story or fond memory to tell about him.
He is survived by his wife Kristin of St. Croix Falls; children, Cassie Schrock and special friend Charlie Moline, Ashely Schrock, Jade Schrock, and Jacob Schrock; father Don Schrock of Dresser, Wis.; sister Kelly Montgomery (Mark) of St. Croix Falls; brother Greg Schrock (Heidi) of Osceola, Wis.; grandmother Gladys Olson of Dresser, Wis.; mother-in-law Nancy Ahlbrecht of New Ulm; father-in-law Al Ahlbrecht of Lafayette; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his mother Karen Schrock; grandparents, Emil and Helen Beckon, and grandfather Obey Olson.
Funeral service were held at Peace Lutheran Church in Dresser, Wis., on July 18, 2003. Interment was at Peace Lutheran Cemetery.
Gerald 'Jerry' W. Julius
BUTTERFIELD Gerald "Jerry" W. Julius, 52, of Butterfield, formerly of Fairfax, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at his home.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Burial will be at Ft. Ridgely Cemetery in Ridgely Township, Nicollet County.
Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Fairfax is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his daughters, Amanda "Mandy" Julius of St. Cloud, Elizabeth "Liz" Freitag of Fairfax; one grandson; sisters, Barbara Goblirsch of Gilbert, Heather Row of Pierre, S.D.; brothers, Robert Julius of Black Creek, Wis., Shane Julius of Spicer, and Adam Julius of Spicer; and stepmother, Carol Julius of Spicer.
Gerald Warren Julius was born Oct. 3, 1950, in New Ulm to Warren and Cordella (Frank) Julius.
He served in the U.S. Navy from March 4, 1969, until June 23, 1972.
Gertrude D. Schultz, 81, of Arlington, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, t the Arlington Good Samaritan Center.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at Peace Lutheran Church with burial in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Arlington.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Kolden Funeral Home in Arlington and Thursday at the church, one hour prior to the service.
She is survived by sons, Dennis and Dale of Arlington; and three grandchildren.
Erna Trebelhorn, 86, of Northfield, formerly of Winthrop, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at the Northfield Care Center.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. today at Trinity Lutheran CHurch in Northfield. Burial will be 5 p.m. today at the Winthrop Cemetery in Winthrop.
Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the church today.
Arrangements are with the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield.
Erna is survived by her daughters, Marion Larson of Nestrand, and Bonnie McKown of Northfield; sons, Jim Trebelhorn of Nestrand, Roger Trebelhorn of Northfield, Larry Trebelhorn of Lakeville, Byron Trebelhorn of Apple Valley; sister Ruth Trebelhorn of Richfield; brother Harold Bauer of Brownton; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Erna Alvina Trebelhorn was born April 19, 1917, in Winthrop, to William and Mary (Brede) Bauer.
William Woodford, 83, of Redwood Falls, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at Methodist Hospital In St. Louis Park.
Services are 1 p.m., Friday, July 25, at First United Methodist Church In Redwood Falls, with burial in the city cemetery.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today, at Nelson-Martin Funeral Service in Redwood Falls and continues at the church on Friday, one hour prior to the service.
He is survived by wife Lillian of Redwood Falls; sons: Gary Woodford of Fairfax, Va., Dean Woodford of Mahtomedi, Tim Woodford of North St. Paul; and daughter: Nancy Coughlin of Andover; 13 grandchildren: two great-grandchildren; brother: LeRoy Woodford of Redwood Falls; sisters: Jane Rasmussen of Sleepy Eye, and Marie Jensen of Alexandria.
He was born June 21, 1920, in Redwood Township, Redwood County, to Roy and Bertha (Freeman) Woodford.
Roy W. Isaacson, 83, of Fairfax, died Monday, July 21, 2003, at the Fairfax Community Home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Fairfax, with interment in the Finnish Apostolic Cemetery in Camp Township, Renville County. Full military rites will be provided by the Fairfax Honor Guard.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of services at the church on Saturday. The Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Fairfax is handling the arrangements.
Roy William Isaacson was born October 3, 1919, in Bandon Township, Renville County, Minnesota. He was the son of Isaac and Sophie (Keskitalo) Isaacson.
Roy entered the U.S. Army on July 23, 1942. He served his country during WWII and received an honorable discharge on November 13, 1945.
Roy is survived by his sisters, Helen Isaacson of Franklin, Lillian Elhardt of St. Paul, and Mamie Hayes of Great Falls, Mont.
Lyle Nelson, 74, of 300 N. Broadway, New Ulm, died Tuesday, July 22 at his home.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 26, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Rev. Donald Sutton officiating. Burial with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm veterans organizations will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Morgan City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm, and one hour prior to services at the church.
Lyle Herbert Nelson, the son of Nels and Mary (Discher) Nelson, was born October 27, 1928, in Morgan. He grew up on the family farm and attended District 19 school in Brown County and parochial school in Fairfax. Lyle entered the United States Army November 9, 1951, proudly serving in the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge on July 24, 1953, he settled in New Ulm where he owned and operated the Coffee Cup Café with his mother. He also worked for Pamida in New Ulm for twenty years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.
Survivors include his sister, Phyllis Buboltz and her husband Clarence of Fairfax; brother-in-law, Ervin Hinderman of Sleepy Eye; sister-in-law, Christine Nelson of Sleepy Eye; ten nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, Lyle was preceded in death by two sisters, Mabel Hinderman and Lucille Buboltz, brother, Earl Nelson, and a brother in infancy.
Clarence Paulson, 92, of Sleepy Eye, died on Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at Sleepy Eye Hospital.
Services are 10 a.m., Saturday, July 26, at Faith United Methodist Church, with burial in Prairieville Cemetery, rural Evan.
Visitation is 4-8 p.m., today, at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye; and continues 9-10 a.m., Saturday at the church.
He is survived by children, Kay Jensen of Eagle, ID, Dean Paulson of Glenwood, MN and Jim Paulson of St. James, MN; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and brother, Don of Bloomington, MN.

Mavis E. Nordby, 39, of North Mankato, formerly of New Ulm, died on Thursday, July 24, 2003, at her home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Pease Funeral Home in St. James, with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James.
Visitation is Monday 4-8 p.m. Monday and 8-11 a.m. Tuesday.
She is survived by son, Brady of North Mankato; brothers, Richard Nordby of Mankato, and Rodney Nordby of Waconia; and boyfriend, Richard Deree of North Mankato.
She was born on Oct. 13, 1964, in St. James, to Bernard and Nancy Nordby.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2003 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brownton with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Wednesday and three hours prior to the service Thursday, at the church.
