Bertha O. Dahlberg
Oct. 1, 1914 - March 6, 2001
Bertha O. Dahlberg, 86, died Tuesday, March 6, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.
The funeral was at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 10, from the Hawley United Methodist Church.
Rev. James Jameson officiated at the funeral, LaVonne Specht was the organist and the vocalist was August Frisk.
Interment was at Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes, with the Vigen - Wright Funeral Home of Hawley in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Russell Hanson, Brett Harris, Scott Harris, Wayne Harris, Dick Wirth and Duane Wirth.
Bertha Wirth was born Oct. 1, 1914, near Boone, Ia., was raised by her grandmother at Waubun and married Alvin W. Kohler at Audubon in 1934. They farmed near White Earth.
She married Lloyd Dahlberg on Aug. 25, 1958, and they farmed near Hawley. She worked at the East Side Cafe for 15 years as a cook and waitress.
Surviving are her husband - Lloyd Dahlberg, Hawley; a son - Daniel (Jacqueline) Kohler, Pittsburg, Calif., and a daughter - Lois (Wayne) Harris, Minneapolis. There are six grandchildren and six great - grandchildren.

Joyce E. Nelson.
July 14, 1946 - March 5, 2001
Services were at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 9, from the David - Donehower Chapel in Detroit Lakes for Joyce E. Nelson.
Miss Nelson, 54, died at the Frazee Care Center on Monday, March 5, where she had resided since 1998.
Interment was at Egelund Lutheran Cemetery, rural Detroit Lakes, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Joyce Emily Nelson, daughter of Samuel and Violet Johnson Nelson, was born in Detroit Lakes on July 14, 1946.
She grew up in Detroit Lakes, attended grade school in Holmesville Township and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School (Class of 1964).
Following high school graduation, she worked for many years at Savoie Cleaners and then was an independent caregiver for people in Detroit Lakes.
Miss Nelson enjoyed reading, crafts, sewing, crocheting, music and collecting unique items.
Surviving are many cousins.

Patricia L. Johnson
Dec. 28, 1944 - March 2, 2001
Patricia L. Johnson, 56, died Friday, March 2, at her home in Detroit Lakes.
The funeral was at 2 p.m on Tuesday, March 6, from Grace Lutheran Church.
Rev. Mark Olson officiated at the funeral, Phyllis McLeod was the organist and the soloist was Clint Felker.
Serving as the pallbearers were Mike Krengel, Dan Krengel, Tim Krengel, Monte Jones, Mike Anderson and Jason Swanstue.
The David - Donehower Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Patricia Lee Swanstue, daughter of Melvin and Mae Nelson Swanstue, was born in St. Paul on Dec. 28, 1944.
She graduated from St. Paul Harding High School (Class of 1962), attended the St. Paul AVTI nursing program and worked in the orthopedics department at St. Joseph’s Hospital until 1985.
She moved to Detroit Lakes in 1985, worked at Emmanuel Nursing Home until 1997 and then worked at the Holiday Inn and at Lakeshirts.
Surviving are three sons - Timothy (Carla) Krengel, Cottage Grove, and Daniel (Machelle "Shelly") Krengel and Michael (Janice) Krengel, both Detroit Lakes, and a brother - Gary (Vicki) Swanstue, Bayport. There are six grandchildren.

Margaret G. Simon
Aug. 16, 1920 - March 2, 2001
Rites will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, from Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes for Margaret G. Simon.
Mrs. Simon, 80, died at Innovis Hospital in Fargo on Friday, March 2.
Fr. Jerry Rogers will officiate at the funeral.
Interment will be at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery in Ogema, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Margaret Gertrude Hettwer, daughter of Joseph and Anna Mueller Hettwer, was born Aug. 16, 1920, in Devils Lake, N. D.
She was raised and attended school at Calio, N. D., and married Wilfred Simon in North Dakota on Feb. 8, 1944.
They farmed near Calio until 1951, then moved to Montana, where she worked as a cook, and moved to a farm near Ogema in 1964.
Mr. Simon died in 1969, after which she moved to Detroit Lakes, where she worked at several jobs, including 15 years at St. Mary’s Nursing Home until retiring in 1987.
Surviving are three sons - Jim (Nancy), Anaconda, Mont.; Robert (Mary), Detroit Lakes, and Richard (Mary), Underwood, and two daughters - Judy (Larry Krogen) Kearney, Detroit Lakes, and Louise (David) Kirsch, Wiesbaden, Germany. There are 30 grandchildren and 10 great - grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Simon also was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a grandson.

Raymond Sumpter
Feb. 1, 1922 - March 5, 2001
Raymond Sumpter, 79, a longtime resident of Atlanta Township in Becker County, died at the Sunnyside Nursing Home east of Lake Park on Monday, March 5.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, from St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Lake Park.
Fr. Louis Silva officiated at the funeral, Deb Binde was the organist and vocal music was by the Splonskowski family.
Interment was at the Lake Park Catholic Cemetery, with the Vigen - Wright Funeral Home of Hawley in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Christopher Sumpter, Jeremy Creamer, Steven Splonskowski, Michael Jr. Splonskowski, Leo Splonskowski and Mark Splonskowski.
Raymond Sumpter, son of Floyd and Mae Butler Sumpter, was born Feb. 1, 1922, in St. Paul.
During World War II, he served with the U. S. Army from 1943 - 46 and was stationed in Panama.
On July 24, 1948, Mr. Sumpter and Mary L. Retter were married in Tipp City, Ohio.
Following their marriage, they lived for many years in Beloit, Wis., and then moved to Atlanta Township 30 years ago. Mr. Sumpter worked as a sheet metal contractor until retiring in 1982. He also served as supervisor for all Atlanta Township roads.
Surviving are his wife - Mary, Lake Park; a son - Rodney Sumpter, Frazee; a daughter - Norma (Jeffrey) Creamer, Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers - Floyd Jr. (Margaret) Sumpter, Vergas; Gary (Judy) Sumpter, Pelican Rapids, and David (Patricia) Sumpter, Byron, Ill., and a sister - Judy Sumpter, Minneapolis. There are two grandchildren and one great - granddaughter.

Marjorie Forbes
July 25, 1914 - March 1, 2001
There was a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7, from the Congregational Church in Detroit Lakes for Marjorie Forbes.
Mrs. Forbes, 86, died at Emmanuel Nursing Home on Thursday, March 1.
The David - Donehower Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
Marjorie Bassett, daughter of Louis and Zoe Bassett, was born July 25, 1914, in St. Paul, graduated from University High School (Class of 1932) and attended Stephens College in Columbus, Mo., where she studied to be a teacher.
She and Orville Forbes were married in St. Paul on Sept. 25, 1936, and made their home in Harris, Ia., where she taught school.
They later moved to Perham and then to Detroit Lakes.
Mrs. Forbes worked at the Gopher Grill and then was with the Norby Department Store until retiring in 1979 after being with the firm for 18 years.
An avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings football team, she enjoyed reading, needlework and also served as a volunteer at the library.
Surviving are four children - Sharon (Craig) Larson, Phoenix, Ariz.; Terry (Judy) Forbes, Marietta, Ga.; Zoe (Lester) Gilbertson, Wadena, and Michael (Rosalee) Forbes, Bemidji. There are 10 grandchildren, 15 great - grandchildren and two great - great - grandchildren.
Mrs. Forbes was preceded in death by two grandchildren, a brother (Gordon) and a sister (Muriel Clementson).
