Merwin W. "Bill" Schmidt

Feb. 25, 1941 - June 4, 2000
Merwin W. "Bill" Schmidt, 59, a resident of Preston and a Detroit Lakes native, died Sunday, June 4, at New Prague.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 8, from Trinity Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Ken Vollmers officiating.
There also will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 9, from Christ Lutheran Church in Preston.
Interment will be at the Upsala Cemetery in Richwood Township of Becker County, with the West - Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Merwin W. Schmidt, son of Arthur and Hannah Schmidt, was born in Detroit Lakes on Feb. 25, 1941.
He grew up here, graduated from Detroit Lakes High School (Class of 1958), attended Luther College in Wahoo, Nebr., and then served with the U. S. Army from 1961 - 64.
Mr. Schmidt earned a bachelor’s degree at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S. D., and taught school in Sioux Falls before moving to Moorhead, where he taught at the Probstfield and Riverside elementary schools and served as acting principal and taught at the Voyager Middle School.
After earning a license to become a principal at Moorhead State University, he lived in Fosston and was principal of the Mahnomen and Naytahwaush schools. At the time of his death, he was serving as K - 8 principal of Fillmore Central Schools in Preston.
Surviving are two daughters - Beth (David) Wofford, Seattle, Wash., and Sara (Bill) Liska, Omaha, Nebr.; a son - Patrick Schmidt, Glencoe; a step - son - Ryan Kallberg, St. Paul; his mother - Hannah Schmidt, Detroit Lakes; four brothers - Gerald and Richard (Barbara), both Detroit Lakes; Edward (Sue), Audubon, and David (Cindy), Mapleton, and three sisters - Carol (Donald) Welty, Clear Lake, Ia., and Pamela (Donald) Skarie and Ann (Gary) Fingalson, both Detroit Lakes. There are three grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Schmidt in death was his father, who died Oct. 26, 1978.
Visitation: Wednesday, June 7, West - Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, 6 - 8 p.m., and one hour prior to funeral on Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church.

William E. “Bill” Maneva

Jan. 11, 1943 - July 20, 2000
William E. “Bill” Maneval, 57, died on Thursday, July 20.
The funeral and interment was at Milton, Del., on Tuesday, July 25.
William Maneval, son of Fay and Corinne Maneval, was born in Minneapolis on Jan. 11, 1943.
He was raised in Vergas and attended school at Vergas and Frazee.
Mr. Maneval served in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War and later was with the Seabees in the U. S. Navy.
For many years, he was employed as a truck driver.
Surviving are his wife - Sherri, Harrington, Del.; three sons - Mark (Maryann), Cannon Falls; Lee (Sherry), Hayward, Wis., and William Jr., Spokane, Wash.; two sisters - Gladys (Arlen) Nelson and Cheryl (Winton) Nelson, both of Pelican Rapids, and four brothers - Gary (Pen), Spokane, Wash.; Robin (Barb), Vergas; Steven (Darlene), Detroit Lakes, and David (Marcie), St. Cloud.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother (Donald), two sisters (Donnetta Dehn and Janice Arntson) and a brother - in - law (Donald Arntson).

Russell C. Frannea

Oct. 19, 1922 - July 17, 2000
Russell C. Frannea, 77, a former area resident, died Monday, July 17, at the Mesa Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Ariz.
There will be a graveside service at Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5, with the Rev. Earl Dreyer to officiate.
Military rites will be by Jess - Omundson Post No. 1676, the Detroit Lakes unit of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The David - Donehower Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Russell C. Frannea, son of Charles and Gena Frannea, was born at Mahnomen on Oct. 19, 1922. He moved with his family to Detroit Lakes in 1930 and then to Frazee eight years later.
Mr. Frannea enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1942 and had an extensive on - board duty as a cook in the South Pacific during World War II.
Following his discharge from the armed forces in 1945, he married Betty Hicks of Newburyport, Mass. They later moved to California and lived there until he moved to Mesa in 1995.
Surviving are a daughter - Karen (Virgil) Hartman, Williamston, S. C.; a son - Russell Jr. (Donna), Fontana, Calif.; three brothers - Axel, Safford, Ariz.; Norman (Shirley), Mesa, Ariz., and Myron (Anita), Moorhead, and two sisters - Gail (Ruel) Pederson, Tacoma, Wash., and Velzora (Herb) Stark, Spanaway, Wash. There are five grandchildren and seven great - grandchildren.
Mr. Frannea was preceded in death by his parents, a brother (Manfred) and a grandson.

Emma Wolff
Nov. 12, 1905 - Aug. 8, 2000
Services will be held at both Waubun and in Jamestown, N. D., for Emma Wolff, 94, who died Tuesday, Aug. 8, at the Mahanomen Nursing Center.
The first service will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 14, at the circles of Faith - United Church of Christ in Waubun, with the second to be held at 3:30 p.m. on Monday at the First Church of the Nazarene in Jamestown.
Officiating will be Rev. Terry Tilton, Rev. Frank Rodgers and Rev. Richard Reynolds.
Interment will be at Highland Home Cemetery in Jamestown, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Emma Holzworth, daughter of Jacob and Katherine Klooz Holzworth, was born at Woodworth, N. D., on Nov. 12, 1905.
She was raised there, attended country school and then moved into Jamestown.
On Aug. 27, 1927, she and Jacob Wolff were married in Moorhead.
They lived in Jamestown, where Mrs. Wolff worked at the Palace Cafe. She later worked at the Anne Carlson School in Jamestown as a nurse’s aide and then at the North Dakota State Hospital as a floor supervisor in the adolescent department. Mrs. Wolff also provided senior home care for a few years.
Mr. Wolff died in 1986, she retired in 1989, moved to Waubun in 1990 and to Mahnomen in 1994.
A member of Circles of Faith - United Church of Christ in Waubun and First Church of the Nazarene in Jamestown, Mrs. Wolff did home ministry and enjoyed travel, housekeeping and fishing.
Surviving are three sons - Vernon, Jamestown; Kenneth, Vero Beach, Fla., and Dewane (Christel), Fairport, N. Y.; three daughters - Phyllis (Robert) Tilton, Waubun; Ellen (Thomas) Whiteley, Rochester, N. Y., and Marlys (Kenneth Pearson) Buchholtz, Fargo; a brother - Edwin (Donna) Holzworth, Jamestown, and a sister - Clara Rogel, Ritzville, Wash. There are 15 grandchildren and 22 great - grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Wolff also was preceded in death by a son (Pirl) and her parents.
Visitation: One hour prior to service at both the church in Waubun and at the church in Jamestown

Christian T. “Chris” Muff
June 3, 1914 - Aug. 11, 2000
Services were at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15, from the Strawberry Lake Mennonite Church at rural Ogema for Christian T. “Chris” Muff.
Mr. Muff, 86, died at St. Mary’s Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes on Friday, Aug. 11.
Rev. Ottis Yoder and Rev. Delmar Yoder officiated at the funeral.
Interment was at the church Cemetery, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Albert Muff, Brian Muff, Murray Muff, Rick Muff, Ron Muff and Dan Mulari.
The honorary pallbearers included Jeannie Teiken, Barbara Mills, Karen McDougall, Pam Vogt, Debbra Olk, Rhonda Swiers and Roberta Muff.
Christian Muff, son of Christian and Sophie Muff, was born June 3, 1914, in St. Joseph, Mo.
He was raised and attended school at St. Joseph and moved to the Glyndon area in 1934.
On Dec. 4, 1935, Mr. Muff and Eunice Gilbery were married in Moorhead.
They lived at Glyndon, where he did farm work, until moving to a farm near Strawberry Lake in 1936.
In addition to farming, Mr. Muff also did road construction work.
Surviving are his wife - Eunice, Callaway; three sons - Marvin (Carol), Osage; Robert (Barb), Callaway, and Larry (Leila Kaye), Ogema; a daughter - Irene (James) Mulari, Ogema; two brothers - George (Opal), DeKalb, Mo., and Emil, King City, Mo., and two sisters - Julia Kershner, St. Joseph, Mo., and Sophie (John) Knox, San Jose, Calif. There are 13 grandchildren and 13 great - grandchildren.

Veronica M. Scherping
Feb. 8, 1911 - Aug. 14, 2000
Rites were at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19, from St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Waubun for Veronica M. Scherping.
Mrs. Scherping, 89, died Monday, Aug. 14, at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since 1997.
Fr. Ron Meyer, O. M. I., officiated at the funeral, Lea Stech was the organist and special music was by Lea Stech.
Interment was at the church Cemetery, with the Mattson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Rick Scherping, Jim Scherping, Dan Scherping, Mark Scherping, Dave Scherping, Dave Brown, Bruce Borgrud and Jim Christenson.
Grandchildren and great - grandchildren were the honorary pallbearers.
Veronica Rau, daughter of Peter and Bertha Hagermann Rau, was born at St. Martin on Feb. 8, 1911.
She attended schools in Stearns County and married Joseph J. Scherping at Freeport on Oct. 19, 1932.
The Scherpings moved to the Waubun area in the fall of 1940 with their four children and were engaged in farming. In 1958 and again in 1963 they moved to new farms in the Waubun area as their sons began to farm on their own.
Mr. Scherping died in 1986 and she later moved to the Evergreen Village Apartments in Waubun prior to enter the nursing home.
Surviving are three sons - Clarence (Erna), Apple Valley; Edwin (Barb), Waubun, and Albin (Marlene), Detroit Lakes; a daughter - Yvonne Johnson, Moorhead, and a sister - Christine Rose, Freeport. There are 21 grandchildren and over 28 great - grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Scherping was also preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, a son - in - law (John “Bill” Johnson), three brothers and a sister.
