Karen M. Rathbone
Karen M. Rathbone, 60, Silver Bay, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, in St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. She was born March 25, 1939 to Carl and Evelyn (Nystrom) Mattson in Hibbing.

She grew up in Babbitt and graduated from high school in Ely. She served in the U.S. Navy in 1959 and 1960 at the Naval Shipyards in Charleston, S.C. She was married to Charles Rathbone in 1960 and they had made their home in Silver Bay since 1966. She was a homemaker through the years and later returned to vocational school. She has been employed as a secretary at Tettegouche State Park since 1992. She was a member of Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael in 1989; her mother, Evelyn Mattson; and a brother, Carlie Mattson.

Karen is survived by her husband, Charles; a son, Charles (Debra) of Becker, Minn.; her father and stepmother, Carl and Aggie Mattson of Soudan; two grandchildren, Becky and Sarah; and a sister, Christine Schnook of Eugene, Ore.

Services were held June 29 in Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay, followed by burial in Silver Bay Cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Lillian B. Fraser
Lillian B. Fraser, 82, Spokane, Wash., died peacefully in her sleep from cancer on June 24, 1999. She was born May 26, 1917 as Lillian Alseth in Palmers

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Fraser and beloved daughter, Susan, and brothers Harold, Ralph, Clarence, Milton and Albert Alseth.

She is survived by daughter, Jan Dolphin and grandchildren Rob, Tom and Jon; son, Tom (Eileen) Fraser, grandchildren Terri Palmquist and Traci Robbins; great-grandchildren, Baxter and Rikki; grandson Shaun (Andrea) Sager; great-grandchildren Tyler and Susan; niece Lois Lundberg, and nephews Ray and Don Alseth, and other relatives.

Lillian lived with her family in Silver Bay from 1951-1960. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. She will be forever in our hearts and remembered with love.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 17 at 1 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, Palmers, with Rev. Gerald Erickson officiating.

Edward G. Frisell
Edward G. Frisell, 78, Two Harbors, died Tuesday, June 29, 1999 in Lake View Memorial Hospital in Two Harbors.

He was born April 24, 1921 in Glenwood, Minn. to Carl and Bertha Frisell. He grew up in Alexandria and was married to Evelyn Berg November 7, 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Machinist’s Mate Second Class. He moved to Two Harbors in 1952 and was employed in the construction of Reserve Mining Company in Silver Bay. From 1956 to 1968 he was a co-owner of B & E Motors in Two Harbors. He then continued to work as a mechanic in the construction industry and was also self-employed as a mechanic until his retirement in 1992. As a mechanic, he was also a good Samaritan, who could never drive past a stalled car on the road, without stopping to help.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the 49’ers.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Carl “Bud” Frisell, and an infant daughter, Patricia Carol.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Evelyn; a son, James (Linda) of Ely; a daughter, Janice (Paul) Bergman of Two Harbors; a brother, Robert of Alexandria; three sisters, Lee Zingg of New Hope, Edna Milam of Alexandria, and Carol Fjerstad of Seattle; five grandchildren, Annette (Tim) Riley, Todd (Carol) Frisell, Jim (Cassandra) Hassel, Vince (Raquel) Hassel, Karen (Chris) Bowling; and five great-grandchildren, Ciara Frisell, Andrew, Sage, Sierra and Logan Hassel.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 2 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery, in Two Harbors, at a later date. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Carl E. Johnson
Carl E. Johnson, 81, Two Harbors, died Friday, July 9, 1999, in the Lake View Memorial Hospital. He was born September 6, 1917 to Carl G. and Ellen (Gronoth) Johnson in Lanse, Pa. He graduated from Cooper Township High School, then attended St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe, Pa. and the Hoffman Island Maritime School in New York. He sailed on the Great Lakes, starting as a deckhand in 1939 for Interlake Steamship Company, and retired as a captain for American Steamship Company in 1969. He was married to Doris Erickson on December 10, 1942 and they made their home in Lanse until moving to Two Harbors to care for her mother in 1980. He was a member of the Voyageur Art Club and the Living Waters Fellowship, and attended the Evangelical Free Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Gunnard.

Carl was a very gentle and caring man, and loved the Lord Jesus Christ, accepting Him as his personal Savior in 1983.

Carl is survived by his wife of 56 years, Doris; two sons, Robert M. of Lanse, Pa., and Lorin D. (Erma Jean) of Hilliard, Ohio; three grandchildren, Carl Eric Johnson of Rochester, N.Y., Michael Lorin and Krista Lorane Johnson of Hilliard, Ohio; and two nephews, Wayne Johnson of Morrisdale, R.D., Philipsburg, Pa, and Ronald Johnson of Wilmington, Del; and a great-grandson, Nicholas.

Visitation will be from 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 14 in Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors, where services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors, followed by a luncheon at Living Waters Fellowship.

Agnes G. Wallace
Agnes G. Wallace, 83, Duluth, died Thursday, July 15, 1999. A loving mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, aunt and friend known as “grandma Ag” to many. She was born April 3, 1916 in Broken Bow, Neb. to James and Mary Downs, and moved to Duluth as a child. She was married in 1936 to Bruce Wallace and lived on Park Point for the majority of her life. She was an active member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, PTA, Owletts, AARP and Buoys and Gulls.

Agnes is preceded in death by her husband David (1979); one brother and four sisters.

Loving mother of Geraldine “Pat” (Jim) Hanson; sister of Rita Dunleavy,; grandmother of Laura Hanson, Carolyn (Clyde) Bergman, Ann (Mike) Arneson, Joan (Gary) Krecker, Eric (Viola) Hanson and Chris Hanson. Great-grandmother of 11. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Services were held July 19 in Duluth. Memorials preferred to Our Lady of Mercy, the food shelf or donor’s choice. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors.

Jessie M. (Spindler) Brandine
Jessie M. (Spindler) Brandine, 90, St. Anne’s Senior Residence, Duluth, passed away July 13, 1999 while at St. Mary’s Medical Center Hospice.

She was the first child of James A. and Jean M. (Sommerville) Spindler. Jessie was born in Duluth on July 22, 1908. She graduated with the class of 1929 from Central High School. Jessie married Elmer R. Brandine on December 6, 1933 and they resided in Cleveland and Willowick, Ohio for 35 years. Upon Elmer’s retirement from T.R.W. they returned to Minnesota. They lived in Silver Bay for 10 years before moving to Duluth. Jessie was a member of Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay.

Jessie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and a brother, Robert. She is survived by her sister, Ruth (Glenn) Ericson of Duluth; her brother, Thomas (Lorraine) Spindler of Las Vegas; 4 nephews, Robert (Diane) Ericson of Buffalo, Minn., James (Barbara) Ericson of Las Cruces, N. Mex., John (Pamela) Ericson of New Hope, Minn., and Dale (Ellen) Spindler of Simi Valley, Calif.; a niece, Lynda (Spindler) Warner, also of Simi Valley, Calif.

Services were held July 17.

George E. Schramm
George E. Schramm, 81, Silver Bay, died Tuesday, July 13, 1999 in St. Mary’s Hospice, Duluth. A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and friend to many, his devotion to family, warm smile, and compassion for others will be deeply missed. Born June 5, 1918 to Henry and Ella (Hawn) Schramm at Salisbury, Pa., he graduated from Salisbury Elk Lick High School and later married his high school sweetheart, Jane Leckemby, on June 24, 1940. They made their home in Pennsylvania until 1951, when he moved his family to Minnesota to begin working for the construction company building the taconite plant at Silver Bay, installing and maintaining all the two-way radios in company vehicles and trains. Upon completion of the construction, he joined Reserve Mining Company as an electrician, remaining in that position until his retirement in 1980. He, along with Jane, enjoyed winters in Gulf Shores, Ala., following retirement for a number of years, an occasional golf game, cards, traveling and visiting family.

He was a charter member of Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William; and three sisters - Lydia Schramm, Edna Werner and Esther Brown. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane; two daughters, Karen (John) Melville of Stillwater, Holly (Jeff) Thomas of Cumberland, Wisc.; two sons, Edward (Sandra) Schramm of River Falls, Wisc., and Joseph (Kathy) Schramm of Owatonna, Minn.; 11 grandchildren, Randy (Mary) Schramm, Damon Schramm, Dana (Kari) Schramm, Lara (Ross) Simonson, Scott (Mary) Thomas, Shawn (Kelly) Thomas, Ryan (Shannon) Melville, Mark Melville, Jason Schramm, Sara Schramm, Mandy Schramm; and six great-grandchildren, Jaydon Simonson, Kylee Schramm, Robert Thomas, Fredrick Thomas, Trevor Thomas and Taylor Thomas; and two sisters, Ruth Kinsinger and Mary Ackerman, both of Pennsylvania.

Services were held July 16 in Sychar Lutheran Church in Silver Bay, followed by burial in Silver Bay Cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Dianna Jean Hood
Memorial services were held for Dianna Jean Hood in First Baptist Church in Apache, Okla. July 13, 1999. She died at home in Elgin, Okla. on July 8.

Dianna was born May 12, 1953 in Duluth. She had lived in Elgin since 1990. Dianna was a member of the Lawton, Oklahoma Shrine Clown Ladies and the India Temple Shrine.

Survivors include her son, Scott Ojay; and grandchildren Kyle and Amanda of Aurora, Minn.; special companion Dale Sims, Elgin; sisters Kimberly (Bernie) Hargrove, Apache, and Susan (Randy) Collier, White Oak, N.C.; brother Timothy (Rhea) Lynch, Colorado Springs, Colo.; nephews John Marcus and Jason Griffen, North Carolina, and Dustin Lynch, Colorado; aunt and uncle, Nancy and John Rasmussen, Two Harbors; and cousins Larry and Robert Rasmussen and Debi Thomas, Two Harbors; and aunt Mary Ann Lynch, Two harbors.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Lynch and Mary Lynch Lee, maternal grandparents Vern and Grace Tubman and paternal grandparents, Samuel and Ivah Lunch of Two Harbors.

Eleanor C. Loorya
Eleanor C. Loorya entered into rest June 19, 1999 in Burlingame, Calif. She was the beloved wife of Marcus Loorya for 42 years; loving mother of Edwin “Skip” (Deborah J.) Nelson, James (Helen) Loorya, Larry Loorya, Eileen Dee (Michael) Dugan and Nancy Lee (Richard) Steinberg; devoted grandmother of 13 and great-grandmother of five. Eleanor moved to California in 1950 after her husband, Ed Nelson, Two Harbors, passed away.

Services were held in San Francisco.

Rose M. Brower
Rose M. Brower, 85, Two Harbors, died July 27, 1999 in Lake View Memorial Hospital. She was born March 20, 1914 in Duluth, where she grew up and attended schools, graduating from Duluth Central in 1931. She was married to Harry J. Brower in 1937, and made her home in Two Harbors since that time. Harry preceded her in death in 1991, after 54 years of marriage.

Rose was a charter member, for over 50 years, of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Post 4454, and a member of its former Auxiliary Drill Team. She was a member of the Council of Catholic Women of Holy Spirit Catholic Church of Two Harbors, and was a longtime member of Northwoods Pioneer Crafts Coop.

Rose is survived by her son, Henry “Hank” (Thea) Brower of Two Harbors; three grandchildren, Lori (Ronnie) Lail, Connelly Springs, North Carolina; Scott (Terri) Brower, Two Harbors and Jenny (Randy) Egge of Lake Lillian, MN; four great-grandchildren, Taryn and Sierra Egge and Tyler and Ashley Brower.

Private graveside services will be held at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Stanley E. Carlson
Stanley E. Carlson, 76, Two Harbors, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999 at Lake View Memorial Hospital. He was born in Duluth on Nov. 3, 1922 to Hilding and Anna Carlson, graduating from Duluth Central in 1941.

He served in World War II with the 91st Infantry, Pine Tree Division under Gen. George Patton in the European Theater of Operations with overseas duty in Africa and Italy. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and Combat Infantry Badge.

Stanley was employed by the DM & IR Railroad until Black Friday and then by Reserve Mining until retirement in 1983.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and the Loyal Order of Moose.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an older brother, Kenneth, in 1975.

He is survived by his wife Alma, son Marvin, Two Harbors; daughter, Marilyn (Mike) Cribbs, Chesapeake Beach, Maryland. Five grandchildren, Daniel, Lisa and Krysta Carlson, Two Harbors; Erik and Jeremy Cribbs, Chesapeake Beach, Maryland; and many nieces and nephews. At his request no services will be held. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the family home on Friday, July30 from 2-5 PM.

Ruben Sellman
Ruben G. Sellman, 102, Two Harbors, died July 26, 1999 at the Lake View Home in Two Harbors.

He was born in Smoland, Sweden, to Andrew and Hilma (Hanson) Sellman March 22, 1897. He came to Two Harbors from Sweden in 1900 and was employed as a machinist for the DM & IR Railroad for 47 years, retiring in 1963. He was a member of the Two Harbors Volunteer Fire Department for 44 years.

He was a member of Emmanuel Luther Church and its P.E.P Club and VASA Lodge.

He is preceded in death by his wife Florence in 1982, a daughter Eleanor Severson in 1977, and a granddaughter, Mary Ann Hendrickson in 1982.

He is survived by his son, Robert of Two Harbors; a daughter, Carolyn Rissanen of Duluth, 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Thursday in Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors. Services will be held at 11 AM Friday, July 30, 1999 in Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors, followed by burial in Lakeview Cemetery in Two Harbors.

Gary L. Halden
Gary L. Halden, 47, Two Harbors, died Saturday, July 24, 1999 in Washburn, Wisconsin. He was born August 17, l95l to John A. and Bernice (Olson) Halden in Two Harbors, where he grew up and graduated from high school in 1969. After high school, he served in the U. S Army, then returned to Two Harbors and was employed at the former Husky Hydraulics, and operated a pool hall in downtown Two Harbors. He later worked on the ore docks for the D M & I R Railroad and at LaBounty Manufacturing. For the past twelve years he operated the Northshore Wellness Center in Two Harbors. He was aIso a Tai Chi instructor, was a creative woodworker, and loved running and foosball.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bernice Halden and brother, John Duane “Butch” Halden

Gary is survived by his sister, Marcia Johnson of Two Harbors; a niece, Kathy Skogman of Savage; three nephews, Rick M. Johnson of Duluth; Brad Halden of Two Harbors and Mitch Halden of Florida; an uncle, John (Phyllis) Olson of Two Harbors; an aunt, Alice Bender of Brainerd, several cousins and a sister-in-law, Millie Halden of Duluth.

Services were held at 1PM Wednesday, July 28, 1999 in the United Church in Two Harbors. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

J. Peter Cary
J. Peter Cary, 54 Beaver Bay, died Thursday, July 22, 1999 at his home. He was born January, 16, 1945 to Fred W. and Henrietta (Kern) Cary in Butte, Montana. He grew up in St. Cloud and Minneapolis and graduated from the University of Minnesota High School in 1963. He attended St. John’s University in Collegeville and the University of Minnesota, graduating from the School of Dentistry in 1970. He served in the US Navy, then lived in Winona for a short time, before moving to Beaver Bay in 1973. He operated a dental practice in Silver Bay from 1973 until his death. He was a member of the United Protestant Church in Silver Bay. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Peter enjoyed the outdoors- fishing, hunting and especially kayaking; at age 41 he won second place in the master’s level of a national kayaking competition.

Peter is survived by his son, John of Beaver Bay; attending the University of Wisconsin -Stout; his daughter-in-law, Katherine Cary of Menomonie, Wisc., attending the University of Wisconsin -River Falls; his father and step-mother, Fred and Laone Cary of St. Cloud; and his sister, Mary McCracken of LaGrande, Oregon.

Services were held at the United Protestant Church in Silver Bay on Sunday, July 25, 1999. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors.
