Lisa Elizabeth Booth
Lisa Elizabeth Booth (Ludwig), 72, Apple Valley (formerly of Silver Bay), passed away September 9, 1999 after a long struggle with cancer.

Lisa was born in Neudek, Czechoslovakia in 1927 and lived most of her early life in Bayreuth, Germany. She moved to the United States shortly after World War II and was married to Murle Booth in 1946. Lisa and Murle lived in Mora for nine years and moved to Silver Bay in 1955 where they raised their family. In recent years, Lisa also lived in Appleton and Wausau, Wisc. before moving to Apple Valley.

Lisa was preceded in death by her husband Murle in 1988 and is survived by her stepmother Leni Ludwig of Marklengast, Germany and her sisters Doris Griesinger of Arvada, Colo. and Sylvia Wagner of Liehstatt, Germany.

Lisa and Murle have four children: Ingrid Jensen of Grand Rapids, Mich., Vern (Diane) Booth of Lutsen, Suzanne (Paul) Ostoff of Mankato, and Danette (Tom) Carman of Apple Valley. Her grandchildren include Tina Worden of Kasson, Minn., Jim Jensen of Oklahoma City, Okla., Eric and Steven Jensen of Grand Rapids, Mich., Katie Booth of Lutsen, Brianna and Amber Ostoff of Mankato, and Michael and Jonathan Carman of Apple Valley. Great-grandchildren are Daniel and Andrew Worden of Kasson.

The family will hold private memorial service for Lisa. Memorials may be donated to the Cancer Research Foundation.

Frances Vivian Tonnar
Frances Vivian Tonnar, 71, Crystal Bay Township, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999 at her home.

She was born September 23, 1927 in Todd Township, Minn. to Fred and Myrtle (Olsen) Knox. She was married to Chester Tonnar in Bertha, Minn. on November 18, 1945. They had made their home in Finland since 1952. She enjoyed hummingbirds, the color purple, children, crocheting, cards, cooking, shopping and reading. She liked to watch Chet fish, was an excellent speller, an avid coupon clipper and was fully stocked for the next millennium.

She was preceded in death by son Lawrence, daughter Janice, parents Fred and Myrtle Knox, and brothers Harold and Orvis Knox.

She is survived by her husband Chester Sr.; children Chester Jr. (Kathie) Tonnar, Sylvia Schyma, Jane (Ken) Knutsen, Karen (Chuck) Storch, David Tonnar, Joyce (Lowell) Meeks, Jerry (Lisa) Tonnar and John Tonnar; sister Margie Leslie; niece Donna Leslie; nephews Mike Leslie and Larry Knox; 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services were held September 10 in Faith Lutheran Church in Silver Bay, followed by burial Saturday at Woodside Cemetery near Wadena.

John Jacobsen, Jr.
John (Junior or Jake) Jacobsen, Jr., 79, died August 29, 1999.

He was born in the Silver Bay area and was a commercial fisherman with his father and brothers on Lake Superior until he moved his family to Great Falls, Mont. in 1957. There he was an operating engineer with Lewis Construction and Sletten Construction until his retirement in 1982.

Junior loved to cook and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing during his retirement in Alaska, at Flathead Lake in Polson and Missoula, Mont.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth, of Missoula; daughters, Mary of Prescott, Ariz., Benita of Missoula, Betsy of Spokane, Wash.; son, John III; granddaughter Cori of Anchorage; and sister Pauline Haveri of Two Harbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alma; brothers Arnold and Herbert; sisters Madeline Hansen, Tofte, and Florence Block, Harrah, Okla.

We’ll miss his enthusiasm for life, learning and most of all, Sunday morning pancakes.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Memorials may be sent to Hospice Care, 500 N. Higgins Avenue, Missoula, MT 59802.

Freda Norlen
Freda Norlen, 96, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, in the Sunrise Home in Two Harbors. She was born February 19, 1903 to Iver and Gurine (Hangcraas) Iverson in Two Harbors, where she was a life-long resident.

She was employed at the former Puent’s market for several years. In 1937 she married Herman Norlen and he preceded her in death in 1983. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and George Iverson and a sister, Mabel Hamilton. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aide.

Freda is survived by two nieces, Shirley Elwell of Fayetteville, N.C. and Lois Iverson of New Home, Minn.

Graveside service was held Wednesday at Lakeview Cemetery in Two Harbors.

Richard "Dick" A. Fleck
Richard “Dick” A. Fleck, 57, Two Harbors, died Friday, Sept. 17, 1999 in his home, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born to Jack and Constance (Nelson) Fleck on July 5, 1942 in Berkeley, Calif. As a child he lived in Washburn, Wisc. for several years, and has made his home in Two Harbors since 1954, graduating from Two Harbors High School in 1961. He served in the Navy Seabees from 1962 to 1966 in Southeast Asia. In 1967 he married Rebecca (Becki) Berg. He was employed as an asbestos worker for seven years, then was employed as an operating engineer with Local #49 from 1973 until his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant brother, Curt.

Richard is survived by his wife, Becki; four daughters, Laurel Duncan, Lezli Fleck and Lynn (David) Larson, all of Two Harbors and Lisa Johnson of Carlton; three brothers, David and Thomas (Marian), both of Two Harbors and Lee of St. Cloud; five sisters, Candy Fleck and Gay Kirkpatrick, both of Kona, Hawaii, Wendy (Stan) Hovdestad of Pearce, Ariz., Spring (Ray) Waldron of St. Paul and Melodye (Les) Stavig of Becker, Minn.; four grandchildren, Amber and Hailey Fleck, Ashley Duncan and Dylan Johnson; five nieces and nine nephews.

Services were held September 22 in Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors.

Reuben Kyle Olson
Reuben K. Olson, 41, Two Harbors, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was born at International Falls to Reuben L. and Annette (Viola) Olson January 11, 1958. He lived mostly in Duluth and various parts of the United States. He was employed at Wilderness North in Brimson as a camp cook, U.S. Forest Service, and ServiceMaster of Two Harbors.

He was a member of AA, formerly attended Resurrection Fellowship and most recently attended the Two Harbors Evangelical Free Church. He enjoyed watching ships on Lake Superior, hiking, the outdoors, contemporary Christian music, and building car and airplane models.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Angela.

He is survived by his brothers, Ron (Jana) of Two Harbors, Rod (Julie) and Ryan (Inga), both of Beaverton, Ore., Rob Chase of Duluth; sister, ReuAnn (Jody) Larkin of Wenatchee, Wash.; grandparents, Wilfred and Josephine Bruyere of Thunder Bay; close friends Gigi McMillian and Karen Johnson; special cousin Velma Morton, special niece Jamie and nephew Sean; as well as other special aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

A special thank you to Kevin Miles and the Victorian House in Duluth.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Evangelical Free Church in Two Harbors.

Shirley "Tootsie" Johnson Beck
Shirley “Tootsie” Johnson Beck, 72, Two Harbors, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999 in the Benedictine Health Center. She was born May 25, 1927 in Two Harbors to Marvin Elias and Ellen Marie (Erickson) Kirkhus. She grew up and attended schools in Duluth and Two Harbors, graduating from Two Harbors High School in 1944.

While her children were young, Tootsie was able to be a “stay at home mom”, something they came to appreciate as they raised families of their own. She later worked at the Two Harbors Federal Credit Union, until retiring in 1990. She was a member of the Women of the Moose, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-father, Alex Olson, and by her former husband, Kenneth E. “Bogo” Johnson.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin Beck; two sons, Michael “Bogo” (Patty) Johnson of Andover, Minn. and Kirk “Erwin” Johnson of Two Harbors; three daughters, Gaynelle Johnson and Shelley Ann Johnson, both of Duluth and Denise “Deedi” Talbott of Two Harbors; step-children Julie Beck and Laura (Gary Korby) Beck, both of Duluth and Bruce Beck of Kasson, Minn.; a brother, Ronald (Jean) Kirkhus of Two Harbors; and a step-sister, Lois Olson (Duane) Wick of Two Harbors.

Also surviving are her dearly loved grandchildren, Ronald E. (Mary) Davidson and Shawna Davidson of Duluth, Monique Talbott of Two Harbors, Erin and Tracy Johnson of Andover, Nicolaus, Corey and Brittain Collins of Duluth, Jeremy Schuelke of Two Harbors, and Joe and Benjamin Beck of Kasson; and her special great-grandchildren, Hogan and Ailie Davidson of Duluth.

Shirley was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, often putting herself second to others needs and wants. She was remarkably strong and courageous during her battle and her family gathered strength from her, to endure with her, “the long goodbye”. We are hopeful she is at peace and in a much better place.

Services were held September 18 in the Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors, followed by burial in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors.

Marjorie L. Moen
Marjorie L. Moen, 73, Two Harbors, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at the Sunrise Home in Two Harbors.

She was born in Two Harbors August 12, 1926 to Roswell and Hannah (Walman) Herendeen. She was a life long resident of Two Harbors, where she graduated in the class of 1944, and married Morris on May 10, 1947.

She enjoyed cooking, being a homemaker, entertaining, and her home was always filled with music. She considered strangers friends that she hadn’t met yet. Though saddened by her passing, her family is comforted to know that she is eternally with the Lord, whom she loved and served.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband Morris; sons Denny (Sharon), Two Harbors, and Don (Laura), Mobile, Ala.; daughters Wendy (Scott) Archambault, Blaine, Minn. and Diane (Brent) Clayton, Hutchinson, Kans.; sister Marion (Dave) Watchner, Minneapolis; 14 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Also survived by nieces, nephews and many friends.

Services were held Sept. 28 at First Baptist Church in Two Harbors. Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Two Harbors. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Dagmar Osbakken
Dagmar Osbakken, 101, Duluth, died September 20, 1999 in St. Mary’s Medical Center.

She was born to Einar Sigurd and Lena Kristina (Hansen) Osbakken at Angernes, Sandnessjoen, Helgeland, Nordland, Norway in 1898. The family came to the U.S. in 1904 and settled in Two Harbors.

Dagmar started work for the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad at the ore dock office in Two Harbors during World War I. She was later transferred to the railroad office in Duluth where she completed her working career in 1965. She lived in her home in the Duluth Lakeside neighborhood, and found time to travel throughout the U.S., Alaska, Mexico and Norway.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Olaf, John, Leif and sister Gladys.

Survivors include a brother, Ralph of Herbster, Wis.; a sister, Olga Johnson of Two Harbors; and many nieces and nephews.

Dagmar was a member of the Nortun Lodge #16 Sons of Norway, the Lester Park Garden Club, the Lake Superior Waves Unit 141, and the Women Veterans of Minnesota. She served in the Women’s Army Corp. from 1943-1945.

Funeral services were held September 25 in Duluth. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Robert L. Anderson
Robert L. Anderson, 79, of Wichita Falls, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, in his home.

Anderson was born December 3, 1919, in Two Harbors. He was owner of Anderson’s Insurance Co. and served in the Army during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the P.O.W. Medal. He was a life member of American Ex-Prisoners of War and was an involved member of Veterans of Foreign Wars David Gibbs Post No. 8878. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include two sons, Bobby of Fort Worth and David of North Richland Hills, Tex.; four daughters, Susie Bevis of Longview, Tex., Mary Beth Ritter of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Robbie Gellman of Coppell, Tex. and Barbara Noey of Wichita Falls; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Robert John Sandness
Robert J. Sandness, 71, Two Harbors, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth.

He was born December 11, 1928 to Magnus and Alice Sandness in Two Harbors. He was a life-long resident of Two Harbors. He served in the Army in Italy and was later called back and served in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He returned to Two Harbors and worked for the DM&IR Railway, and the City of Two Harbors Police Department from 1963 until retirement as chief in 1991. He loved hunting and fishing.

He is preceded in death by his father and granddaughter Leah Sandness.

He is survived by wife Jeanne; son Mitchell (Pam) of Two Harbors; daughter Shirley Gordon of Superior; mother and step-father, Alice (Nestor) Mellin of Superior; brother Richard (Arlene) of California; grandchildren Peter Gordon, Stephanie Rine and Zachary Sandness; and a great-granddaughter, Emily Gordon.

Visitation is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15 at the Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Service 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16 at Living Waters Fellowship in Two Harbors, with burial at Lakeview Cemetery.

Gerald "Ted" Blaisdell
Gerald “Ted” Blaisdell, 82, Two Harbors, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth. He was born March 16, 1917 to Otis and Blanche Blaisdell in Two Harbors, where he grew up and attended schools. He was married to Hazel Ruth LaBounty on March 27, 1943.

He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps at camps in Finland and Gooseberry Park, then worked as a conductor for the DM&IR Railroad for 37 years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of the United Church in Two Harbors since 1951, and served there as an elder, council member and trustee for many years. In 1994, he was nominated Outstanding Senior Presbyterian. He was also a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. In his free time, Ted enjoyed woodworking, golfing, fishing and camping, and was also a square dance caller for many years.

Ted is survived by his wife Hazel; a daughter, Sally Joanne (Richard) LaFavor of Coon Rapids; two grandsons, Darren Richard (Eileen) LaFavor of Corbett, Ore., and Brian Gerald (Miggy) LaFavor of Coon Rapids; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Theodore LaFavor and Leah Eileen LaFavor; a brother, Harry (Frances) Blaisdell of Stevensville, Mich.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Services were held Wednesday in the United Church, Two Harbors, followed by burial in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors. Memorials are preferred to the United Church.
