Louise Cooper
Louise Cooper, 82, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely. The Rev. James Scheuer will be celebrant. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service Thursday at the church. Burial will be in the Ely Cemetery. Arrangements are by Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely.

Louise Cooper, 82, of St. Paul, formerly of Ely, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, in Our Lady of Good Console in St. Paul.

She was born June 12, 1918, in Ely to Jacob and Katherine (Muhvich) Grahek. She worked for the Minnesota state budget department for 42 years.

She is survived by her husband, Edward; three sisters, Kathryn Klun, and Marie Smith, both of Ely, and Ann Wotzka of Little Falls, Minn.; a brother, Dr. J.P. Grahek, of Ely; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bill and Matthew.

Anthony S. Cernkovich
Anthony S. Cernkovich, 76, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virginia. The Rev. John Doyle will be celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Virginia. Military rites will be accorded by the Virginia Color Guard. Arrangements are by Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Anthony S. Cernkovich, 76, of Britt died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at his home.

He was born April 7, 1924, in Buhl to Matt and Margaret (Mance) Crnkovich. He was employed by the USDA as a forestry fire guard until his retirement. He had lived in Buhl and Virginia prior to making his home in Britt in 1971. He was a member of the Crellin-Tini Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1113 of Virginia, and the Croatian Fraternal Union.

He was preceded in death by a brother; a sister; and his parents.

Maryanne McCabe Smach
Maryanne McCabe Smach, 86, of Silver Bay, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010 at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth. She was born Aug. 5, 1923, in Rochester to Walter and Rosalia McCabe.

She married Richard Smach of Berwyn, Ill., Feb. 11, 1950. She was employed as a medical secretary in the neurology department at Mayo Clinic, and, after moving to St. Cloud, was a secretary to the director at the St. Cloud Veteran’s Hospital for 30 years. In 1989 she moved to Silver Bay.

Maryanne was an ardent artist in watercolors, pencil and colored pencil and was a member of several art clubs in Arizona. She and her husband loved to travel the United States in their motor home and also spent 18 years at their home in Cottonwood, Ariz. She and Richard also belonged to the Minnesota Archaeological Society and worked with archaeologists from Hamline University in St Paul. They also enjoyed hunting and fishing in Ontario.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Silver Bay. Maryanne is preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Marjorie Withers of Rochester. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Richard; nieces, Melissa Withers and Sharron Withers of Scottsdale; and a nephew, Robert Withers of Minneapolis.

Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Saturday with an 11 a.m. service at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Silver Bay. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home. Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimers Foundation or Solvay Hospice House.

Hubert Swanson
Hubert E. Swanson, 78, Two Harbors, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Hubert was born Nov. 23, 1931, to Arvid and Margaret Swanson in Two Harbors, where he grew up and attended school.

He worked for the Forest Service planting trees for several years, and spent winters in Florida, where he was a parking lot attendant at the Naples Dog Track. He was a member of Living Waters Fellowship and enjoyed visiting with people.

Hubert was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother, Don Swanson of Two Harbors; nephews, Ken (Connie) Swanson and Chuck (Susie) Swanson; niece Cheryl Wallat; and several grand nieces and nephews.

Services were Saturday at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Gen Ellquist
Genevieve “Gen” Ellquist, 80, Two Harbors, died Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 at the Sunrise Home. She was born Jan. 14, 1930, to David G. and Ruth (Parks) Swanson in Deer River.

Gen graduated from Tower-Soudan High School in 1948, and married Carl Ellquist in Tower in 1949. She was employed by the DM&IR Railroad as a telephone operator in Tower and Two Harbors, and later worked at Lake View Memorial Nursing Home as an aide and secretary. She also worked at Jo-El’s Apple Barrel.

Gen was President of the Lake View Memorial Auxiliary, district chairwoman for District B Hospital and Home Auxiliary and was second vice president for the Health Care Auxiliary of Minnesota.

She was instrumental in organizing the Lake View Memorial Junior Volunteers, which she headed for a number of years.

She enjoyed making crafts, teaching baking, decorating for Christmas, and the gift of giving. Gen was preceded in death by husband, Carl, in 1995; brother, David Swanson; and sister, Rose Swanson. She is survived by her sons, Kevan (Carley) of Cleveland, Craig (Jill) of Two Harbors, and Kerry (Kim) of Duluth; grandchildren, Julie (Bryan) Peterson, Karen (Kurt) Burns, Kellie Ellquist, David (Jodi) Ellquist, Andrew Ellquist and Matthew Ellquist; great-grandchildren, Gibson Burns, Greysen Cameron and Ella Peterson; a brother, John Swanson of Minneapolis; and sisters, Leona Sabol of Sacramento and Phyllis Eckelberry of Mesa, Ariza.

Gen’s family would like to thank the staff of Sunrise Home and St Mary’s Hospice for their compassionate care, and Pastor James Joseph for his attention to Gen’s spiritual needs.

In lieu of flowers memo- rials are preferred to the Sunrise Home Activity Fund or Lake County Foodshelf. A service was held Wednesday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors.

Harry A. Clark
Harry A. Clark, 66, SERVICES: Memorial service 1 p.m. Friday in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Aurora, with the Rev. Cynthia Gray officiating. Inurnment will follow the service in Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora, with a luncheon in the church hall to follow the committal. Arrangements are by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora.

Harry A. Clark, 66, of rural Aurora died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

He was born May 25, 1934, in Duluth to John and Winifred (McCauley) Clark. He was a graduate of Morgan Park High School and was an avid baseball player. He served the country as a Navy veteran and following the war, worked in Eau Claire, Wis. He married Glorene Bjerke on Feb. 17, 1969, in Cisseton, S.D. He began working for Erie Mining Co. in 1957 and retired from there in 1995 as a supervisor in the tailings basin.

He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and served on the board of deacons and trustees. He was also a member of the Hibbing Masonic Lodge 255 and served as District 8 representative. He was Master of the Biwabik Masonic Lodge and a member of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Patron. He was an avid sports fan and woodcarver, and enjoyed deer hunting and feeding deer near his home on the river.

Survivors include his wife, Glorene; sons, Harry (Marie) Clark Jr. of Minneapolis, Steven Bjerke of San Antonio, Texas, and Craig Bjerke of Hoyt Lakes; daughters, Julieanne Bjerke of Minneapolis, Gwen (Jim) Gorski of Eveleth and Loretta Hanson of Duluth; a brother, Robert (Irene) Clark, of Moorhead; sisters, Vivian North of Cloquet and Mary (Robert) Stephens of Duluth; nine grandchildren, Joseph, Brook, Rhonda, Sheila, Marie, Clinton, Jamie, Bradley and Derek; seven great-grandchildren, Travis, Ashley, Justin, Logan, Machela, Alexia and Jordan; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, John, James and one who died in infancy.

Helen Marie Norman
Helen Marie Norman, 85, SERVICES: Funeral service1 p.m. Saturday at the Hope Lutheran Church in Floodwood. The Rev. Waldo Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at the Rowe Funeral Home in Floodwood. Burial will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Floodwood. Arrangements are by Rowe Funeral Home in Floodwood.

Helen Marie Norman, 85, of Floodwood, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

She was born in Floodwood on Nov. 21, 1914, to Sivert and Sophia (Ugseth) Magnusen and was a lifelong resident of the Floodwood area. She married Harold Norman on Feb. 26, 1930, in Floodwood. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Floodwood and was a member of the Halden Women’s Club. She was a devoted wife and mother, who worked together with her husband on their family farm, and in her later years, she cared for her son, David, who was confined to a wheelchair since 1958. She enjoyed knitting, embroidery and quilt making.

She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Bernsdorf of Floodwood, Elizabeth Sanken of Hutchinson, Minn., Gloria (Rodney) Bergstrom of Everett, Wash.; two sons, Raymond (Charlene) Norman of Hibbing, Steven (Eileen) Norman of Litchfield, Minn.; three sisters, Margaret Chambers of Hibbing, Valborg Magnusen of Lester Prairie, Minn., Julia Schneider of Duluth; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in 1993; sons, David in 1997, and Ronald “Ronnie” in 1998; her parents; four brothers.

Eugene L. “Uno” Maki
Eugene L. “Uno” Maki, 68, SERVICES: Funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday at United in Christ Lutheran Church in Eveleth. The Rev. Daniel L. Johns will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Burial will be in Eveleth Cemetery. Arrangements are by Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth.

Eugene L. “Uno” Maki, 68, of Eveleth, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at his home.

He was born Dec. 30, 1931, in Leonidas to Uno and Sanna Lisa (Vihriala) Maki. He graduated from Eveleth High School and attended Eveleth Junior College. He married Donna Tomassoni on July 23, 1955, in Eveleth. He was a lifelong resident of Eveleth and retired from U.S. Steel as an instrument repair man after 40 years of service. He was a member of United in Christ Lutheran Church and the Range Recreation Civic Center. He was an Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; a son, Tom (Cathy) Maki, of Eagan, Minn.; daughters, Carey (John “Mike”) Skrbec of Grand Rapids and Cheryl (Dave) Sell of Minocqua, Wis.; grandchildren, Kate, Rachel, Mark, Sara, Erin, Leah, John, Deanna and Natalie; three sisters, Elsie Maki, Elvie Malenius, Eva (Eugene) Malenius, all of Eveleth; sisters-in-law, Harriet Maki of La Grange, Ill., Cindy Maki of Shoreview, Minn.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Fred (Barbara) Tomassoni and Richie (Jackie) Tomassoni, both of Eveleth; numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Einar, Elmer and Elroy; a sister, Eleanor Eckman; nephews, Allen Eckman and Walter Maki; his parents.

James Boyle
James Boyle, 76, James Boyle, 76, of Sun City West, Ariz., died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, after an illness of three months.

He was born July 3, 1924, in Eveleth, to Patrick J. Boyle and Eleanor (Patten) Boyle. He was a 1942 graduate of Eveleth High School, and attended Eveleth Junior College for one year. He was in the Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946, and saw action in the Pacific Theater, including Saipan and Iwo Jima. After the war, he attended the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, and was captain of its golf team for two years. His career as a golf professional began at Grosse Pointe, Mich. From there he went to California, where he was the golf pro at Rancho Santa Fe. He married Carol Lee, formerly of Buhl, in San Diego in 1951. He retired from Rancho Santa Fe in 1979, after 22 years. They made their home in Rancho Bernardo, Calif., before moving to Sun City West, Ariz., in 1992. Jim (Yawmie) will be remembered here for his talent as a golfer and his love of music. He played drums in bands around the Iron Range during his high school years.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Sun City West, Ariz.; his brother, Robert, of Bemidji and Sun City West; nieces and nephews.

Evelyn (Dale) Taylor
Evelyn (Dale) Taylor, 76, SERVICES: Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Embarrass-Pike Evangelical Lutheran Church in Embarrass. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. today in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. Burial will be in the Waasa Township Cemetery near Embarrass. Memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church of Grinnell, Iowa, to Grinnell Regional Hospice, or to the Embarrass-Pike Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Evelyn (Dale) Taylor, 76, of Grinnell, Iowa, formerly of Embarrass, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at her home of cancer.

She was born on Dec. 12, 1923, in Michigan, N.D., to Edward and Sadie Minette. In 1924, the family moved to Staples, Minn., and they moved to Fertile, Minn. in 1933, where she received her education. In 1942, she married Norman E. Dale in Rindahl, Minn., and the couple made their home in Fertile and Babbitt before moving to Embarrass. While living in Embarrass, she worked as a seamstress for Arrow Shirt Co., and later worked as a cook at the Four Corners Restaurant. Following the death of her husband, Norman, in 1987, she began spending her winters in Edinburgh, Texas. She met Harry Taylor in Edinburgh, and they married in 1992 in Embarrass. After their marriage, the couple lived in Grinnell, Iowa. She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Embarrass and served as chaplain for the Eastern Star in Tower, and was involved in the Senior Legion of the Women of the Moose.

Survivors include her husband, Harry Taylor of Grinnell, Iowa; seven sons, Norman (Wanda) Dale Jr. of Aurora, Robert Dale and Rodney (Christina) Dale, both of Embarrass, Gary (Kathleen) Dale and Ronald (Linda) Dale, both of Warroad, Minn., Craig (Candace) Dale of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Wayne (Katrina) Dale of Babbitt; two daughters, Gwen (Craig) Keskitalo and Tammie Waisanen, both of Embarrass; 23 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marcella Vandervort of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, her parents, one sister, and two grandchildren.

Arthur E. Poola
Arthur E. Poola, 87, SERVICES: Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Frizzell Funeral Home in Hale, Mich. The Rev. Pat England will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, www.legacy.com.

Arthur E. Poola, 87, a retired GM laborer of Hale, Mich., died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000.

He was born Jan. 4, 1913, in Ispheming, Mich., to Michael and Rosa (Jarvinen) Poola. He married Irene Bainter.

He is survived by his son, James Poola of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Arlene (Phillip) Heacock, of Hale, Mich.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, in 1998; and four brothers.

Harriet Keller
Harriet B. Keller, 89, Two Harbors, passed away Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010. She was born in Duluth to Carl and Bertha Olsen Oct. 4, 1920.

Harriet was a 1939 graduate of Denfeld High School. She attended the Duluth State Teachers College and also graduated from the Young and Hursh Business College. Harriet was then employed by Western National Bank in Duluth as a cashier.

She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and served as the piano accompanist for the choir for about 14 years. She also was a substitute organist. She was also the accompanist for the local Instrumental Musicians of Duluth.

She was later a member of the Behtlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. In 1948, she married Bert C. Keller and left Duluth to live in Two Harbors, where she was employed by Daniel Gualtieri, D.D.S.

She joined the Voyageur Artists and served as its treasurer. She enjoyed water color painting, hand crafts, and guest artists’ presentations. Harriet loved her family and grandchildren and had fun on camping, fishing, and hunting trips on vacations.

She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Williams R. Olsen, Melvin Olsen, and Alf Olsen; and grandson, Jamie Olson. She is survived by her husband, Bert, of Two Harbors; two daughters, Sheryl Keller, and Sandra Tufto; son, Stephen; nine grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation begins at noon today until a 1 p.m. service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Burialwill be at Lakeview Cemetery.
