Gabriel Carey Johnson
Gabriel Carey Johnson, Gabe, went home to rest in Jesus’ loving arms Tuesday, April 26. He passed away at Duluth Children’s Hospital surrounded by many people who love him very much.

He entered into this life Nov. 29, 1995, in the same hospital. From the moment he arrived, he graced all who traveled along his path.

Even though he was born with a degenerative disease, MECP2-duplication syndrome, it was not his life. It may have guided it, but did not direct it. He claimed every day and those around him learned from that. Through his grace, strength, and character, he showed everyone around him what is truly important in life.

The life that he was given was not one that any of us would have chosen for him, but what he taught us throughout his life will be with us forever. He grounded everyone with his unconditional love. Even though he did not say words, he spoke volumes with his beautiful blue eyes.

His life was not an easy one, but he claimed it all with beauty and intent. With this, he blessed all that came to know him. He will be deeply and sadly missed by many.

Gabe’s family is tremendously thankful to the many people who helped care for him over the years: the doctors, the nurses, and the staff at Duluth Clinic, Duluth Children’s Hospital, and Solvay Hospice House. Without you, we truly believe that we wouldn’t have been able to have the blessing of him for the 15 years that he was with us - the teachers and paraprofessionals who helped him through his school years, as well as the children that he grew up with that were his friends and gave him such joy; the hospice staff who supported us at home in every aspect of life, from Gabe’s physical comfort, to our emotional comfort; and our private duty nurse, Pam Dungan, whom we truly believe was God-sent. We couldn’t have cared for him in the way that he deserved to be cared for without your help. God bless you all.

Gabe is survived by his parents, Carey and Connie Johnson; his sister, Brianna Soderstrom; his brother, Laine Johnson; his grandparents, Alan and Kay Erickson, JoAnn Erickson (Joe Walz), Clifford and Christine Johnson; his aunts and uncles, Brandon (Bridget) Erickson, Amber Erickson, Darla Coleman, Chris (Gretchen) Johnson; his great grandparents, Gertrude Lamo, William Ortman, and Walter Carter; as well as countless great-aunts and uncles and many cousins and close family friends.

A funeral service was held Sunday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors.

George was a member of the Carpenters Union No. 361. In 2008, he attended FinnFest and was very happy to see the president of Finland. He loved music and played many instruments, and even made a record. George also enjoyed woodworking, playing cribbage, and watching the deer. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Waino, Andrew, Rawland and Arnold; and sisters, Esther Pelander, Sylvia Bolen, Helvie Midbrod, and Norma and Aileen Salakka; granddaughter, Aime Leigh Jackson; and great-granddaughter, Caydence Carl.
