Rudy E. Carlson Jr.
Rudy E. Carlson Jr., 78, SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Louis Catholic Church in Washburn, Wis., with the Rev. John Eaton O.F.M. officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Washburn. Arrangements are by Bratley Funeral Home in Washburn, Wis.

Rudy E. Carlson Jr., 78, of Washburn, Wis., died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at his residence.

He was born April 18, 1926, in Ashland, Wis., to Rudolph and Anne (Madis) Carlson Sr. He graduated from Ashland High School and also went to Northland College in Ashland for two years. He was in the U.S. Army and served in World War II. Rudy also received the Purple Heart. On July 21, 1948, he married Mel White in Duluth. For several years, he worked for Brettings Manufacturing in Ashland. He later worked for 29 years for Erie Mining Co., in Hoyt Lakes, prior to retiring in 1988. Rudy was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Washburn and the VFW. He was an artist and an avid outdoorsman.

He is survived by his wife, Mel of Washburn, Wis.; four children Curtis (Randee) Carlson of Hoyt Lakes, Diane (Joe) Fondie of Hoyt Lakes, Jeanne (Neil) Kruse of Aurora, and Richard Carlson of Tower; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, John (Joyce) Carlson, and Keith (Laura) Carlson, both of Ashland; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Lawrence Debeljak
Lawrence Debeljak, 77, SERVICES: Funeral Mass will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Aurora. The Rev. David Forsman will be celebrant. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Burial with military honors accorded by the Aurora/Hoyt Lakes Color Guard will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora. Arrangements are by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home in Aurora. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Lawrence Debeljak, 77, of Aurora, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, in the Skilled Nursing Facility of the White Community Hospital in Aurora.

He was born Aug. 26, 1927, in Aurora, to John and Theresa (Gomik) Debeljak. He was a graduate of Aurora High School and later served our country as an U.S. Army veteran. Most of his life was spent working in the Minneapolis area as a surveyor for the State of Minnesota. He returned to Aurora in the early 1990s and was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Aurora.

He is survived by his sister, Theresia Rose Roznik of Ravenna, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; several brothers and sisters.

Elizabeth 'Beth' Shoars

Elizabeth “Beth” M. Wold Shoars, 80, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at the Emory L. Bennett Memorial Veteran’s Nursing Home in Daytona Beach, Fla., where she had lived since 2002. She was formerly a resident and high school graduate of Virginia, and more recently, Tampa, Fla.

She was born Aug. 5, 1924. She served two years as an Army medical technician during World War II. She was a certified medical transcriptionist and a member of the American Legion. She enjoyed reading, talking with high school friends, and was a voracious crossword puzzle slover.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Gail Wold of Sun City West, Ariz.; nephews and their families, Rick Wold of Lakeland, Fla., and David Wold of Rochester Hills, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil Shoars; parents, Adolph and Mae Wold; brother, Robert Wold.

Francis J. ‘Frank’ Sopp
Francis J. ‘Frank’ Sopp, 76, SERVICES: Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Virginia. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Memorials are preferred. Arrangements are by Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home, Eveleth.

Francis J. “Frank” Sopp, 76, of Eveleth died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004 at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on Aug. 16, 1928, in Virginia to Frank and Terezija (Piskur) Sopp. Frank was married to Patricia R. Horoshak on June 13, 1949 in Eveleth.

He worked for Aysta Dairy and Paciotti Lumber Company before retiring as a maintenance foreman for Eveleth Taconite in 1985. Frank was a member of Eveleth Elks Lodge No. 1161, Fayal Golden Club, Monday Senior Bowling and Wednesday League Bowling on the Len’s Body Shop team. He enjoyed fishing, camping and was an avid hunter.

After his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking in his shop and cutting lumber at the sawmill. Frank loved spending time with his family and grandchildren and traveling. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed help.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia; children, Patricia (Michael) Fish of Saginaw, Minn., Joseph (Janet) Sopp of Eveleth, Deborah (Bruce) Liberty of Cottage Grove, Minn., Michael Sopp of Eveleth, Thomas (Diana) Sopp of Harwood, N.D. and “special” daughter Ella Mancina of Eveleth; grandchildren, Jennifer (Darwin) and Jeffrey (Amber) Jola, Nicole, Samantha, Alison and Casey Sopp, Kathryn, Nicholas and Meredith Liberty, Melanie and Nicholas Sopp; step grandchildren, Josh and Sam Fish; sisters, Mary (Mark) Mesich of Mountain Iron and Anne (Nick Sr.) Jagunich of Eveleth; brother, Michael (Rose) Sopp of Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary ‘Mitzie’ Greenman
Mary ‘Mitzie’ Greenman, 92, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mountain Iron. The Rev. John Doyle will be celebrant. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia and continue from 9 a.m. until the service Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Mountain Iron.

Mary Antonia “Mitzie” Udovich Cerkvenik Greenman, 92, of Virginia, formerly of Mountain Iron, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at her home in Edgewood Vista in Virginia.

She was born April 4, 1912, to Anton and Marija (Hrescak) Udovich in Senadole, Slovenia. The family immigrated to the United States when she was 14 months old. Mitzie was the oldest of eight children. She grew up in Eveleth and graduated from Eveleth High School Class of 1930. Mitzie was united in marriage to Anton “Tony” Cerkvenik of Mountain Iron in 1935. Following marriage, the couple made their home and raised their family in Mountain Iron. Mitzie worked with her husband in their family business, Cerkvenik’s Grocery, as the bookkeeper and head cashier for more than 30 years. After retirement, she volunteered actively for hospitals in Virginia, and Phoenix, Ariz., where she spent her winters. She was also active in senior organizations and won multiple trophies in senior shuffleboard, horseshoe, and other competitions. Tony died in 1976, and Mitzie married Clarence Greenman in 1986; Clarence died in 1994. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mountain Iron and the American Slovenian Catholic Union (KSKJ).

Surviving are her two sons, Dennis (Kay) Cerkvenik of Minnetonka, Minn., and Jack Cerkvenik of Minneapolis; son-in-law, Phil Stone of St. Louis Park, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Doug Stone, Nancy Stone (Greg Gidden), Bruce (Jean) Stone, Tammy Halsey, Garret Cerkvenik, Jeff (Brenda) Cerkvenik, Christine (Patrick) Imdieke, and Brian Cerkvenik; eight great-grandchildren, Mark, Laura and Eric Cerkvenik, Lucy and Elizabeth Stone, Kathryn Rose Imdieke, and Darryl and Maria Cram; four sisters, Dorothy (Coby) Hurst of Tucson, Ariz., Vida (Penny) Jensen of Challis, Idaho, Regina (Teddy) Kilian of Chicago, and Margaret (Marnie) Egger of Blue Springs, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; three brothers, Tony, Frank and Joe Udovich; son, Anton in 1996; and daughter, Patricia Stone in 1997.

Stanley Matt Verbick
Stanley Matt Verbick, 87, SERVICES: A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Kerntz Brothers Funeral Chapel in Ely. The Rev. James Scheuer will officiate. Stanley Matt Verbick, 87, of Babbitt, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004. He was born Nov. 22, 1916 in Virginia to Matt and Mary (Tanko) Verbick and attended schools there. He was married on Oct. 12, 1940, to Mary Bonovich in Grand Rapids.

Stan worked as a heavy equipment mechanic at mines in Babbitt and Marble and also at foreign jobs in Greenland, Africa and Canada. He was very talented musically, playing the acoustic and electric guitars, banjo, accordion, organ and harmonica. He taught his children to play the guitar. He entertained at many Senior Citizen Homes all over the range with his friend, Gerri. Stan was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1539 and American Legion Post No. 535 in Babbitt and a Past Commander of the VFW Post in Marble. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany.

Stan is survived by his sons, Stan (Kathy) Verbick of Babbitt and Bruce (Lynn) Verbick of Duluth; three grandsons, Steve of Chisholm, Tom (Cheryl) of Gilbert, and Ryan of Duluth; great-grandson, Travis of Gilbert; sisters, Delores Kepp of Rochester, Alga Foss of Grand Rapids and Jean Verbick of Chicago; special friend, Gerri Mealy of Babbitt and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mary on Nov. 8, 1991; sisters, Rose Kishel, Frances Scott, Marie Williams and Angela Verbick; and his brother, Frank.

Julia Ann Glinsek
Julia Ann Glinsek, 87, SERVICES: A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely. The Rev. James Scheuer will officiate. Julia Ann Glinsek, 87, of Ely, died Oct. 4, 2004, at Ely Bloomenson Nursing Home. She was born May 7, 1917, to Frank and Julia (Kuran) Kolek in Superior, Wis. Julia grew up and attended school in Superior. In September of 1938 she married Joseph Glinsek. She moved to Ely with her husband.

Julia was a homemaker, a good mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to play pinochle, bingo, crochet, knit and make crafts. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and an active member and volunteer at the Ely Senior Center.

She will be missed by her family and friends.

Julia is survived by her daughter, Jo-Ann (Joseph) Stefanich of Gilbert; son, Joseph (Mary) Glinsek of Blaine; six grandchildren, Jeff (Dot) Stefanich of Salt Lake City, Utah, Steven Stefanich of Savage, Minn., Troy Stefanich of Duluth, Bob (Suzie) Glinsek of Lino Lakes, Minn., Beth (Darin) Laabs of Princeton, Minn., Jamie (Carrie) Glinsek of Elk River, Minn.; seven great-grandchildren, Tyler, Katie and Nick Stefanich, Taylor, Tommy and Tate Laabs, and Nan Glinsek; sister, Mary Kolek of Superior, special friend, Jack Skradski of Ely; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph in 1955; four brothers, Louis, Joe, Frank, and Steve Kolek; and two sisters, Ann Rucka and Helen Post.

Senia Nissila
Senia Nissila, 98, SERVICES: Visitation will be one hour prior to the 1 p.m. funeral service Friday at the Colvin Town Hall in Markham. The Rev. Brian Birk will officiate. Burial will be in the Markham Cemetery. Arrangements by Range Funeral Home of Virginia.

Senia Nissila, 98, of Markham, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at the White Community Nursing Home.

Senia was born on Aug. 25, 1906, to Isaac and Alma (Palomaki) Tynjala in Ilmajoki, Finland. Senia was united in marriage to William J. Nissila on Nov. 22, 1922, in Virginia.

Survivors include a son, William M. Nissila of Markham; daughter, Sylvia Nissila of Markham; three grandchildren, Jeremy Nissila, Gina Gusk, David Hillstrom; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William on May 19, 1978; daughter, Helen “Dee” Hillstrom in 1976; two brothers and two sisters.

Rose J. Moylan
Rose J. Moylan, 90, SERVICES: Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. John O’Donnell will officiate.

Rose J. Moylan, 90, and lifetime resident of Virginia, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004 at St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia.

She was born April 27, 1914, in Virginia, the daughter of Steven and Jennie (Johnson) Keating. Rose graduated from Mountain Iron High School in 1931. She was a wonderful homemaker and an expert seamstress, employed at the Cluett-Peabody Shirt Factory in Virginia. Rose was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia.

She is survived by her sons, George (Deb) Moylan of Virginia and Patrick (Tracy) Moylan of Eveleth; grandchildren, Mark (Jess) Moylan of New Richmond, Wis., and Tausha Marie and Amanda Lynn Moylan of Eveleth; great-grandchildren, Lisa Marie and Lindsey Rose Moylan of New Richmond, Wis.; brothers, Edward (Hiroko) Keating of Jamul, Calif., and Russell (Mae) Keating of Eveleth; sister, Virginia Keating, of New Hope, Minn.; niece and nephews, Sherri Kangas of Eveleth, John Keating of Virginia, Frank Keating of San Diego, Russell Keating Jr. of Eveleth, and David Keating of Eveleth; and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Barney, in 1970; and son, Thomas, in 1980.

Barbara Louise Russell
Barbara Louise Russell, 69, SERVICES: Memorial service at 1 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook, with inurnment in the Cook Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday at the Cremation Society of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Donations to the Humane Society in honor of Barbara’s devoted and beloved pets would be deeply appreciated.

Barbara Louise (Soderberg) Russell, 69, died on Sept. 30, 2004, after a nine-month battle with cancer.

She was born in Duluth on May 12, 1935, and was raised on the family farm in Field Township near Cook by her parents Nils and Ester (Rosen) Soderberg of Sweden. She graduated from Cook High School in 1953 and Virginia Junior College in 1955. She married Charles A. Russell of Minneapolis in 1964.

Barbara resided in Minneapolis but was an active part-time resident at the family farm in Cook, the Russell cabin on Half Moon Lake near Milltown, Wis., and Club Santiago, Colima, Mexico, where she made many special friends during the winter months spent there. She held many interesting jobs working for Legal Aid, the Minneapolis Department of Court Services, the Minneapolis City Workhouse and the Honeywell Corporation. Barbara loved knitting, gardening, traveling and visiting. She loved to watch birds from the kitchen windows and was an avid reader. She enjoyed attending her Cook High School class reunions. Barbara will be remembered for her kindness and generosity, steadfast commitment to her family and the pride she took in her Swedish heritage. Barbara loved all animals and was devoted to her many pets.

Barbara will be deeply missed by her loving husband of 39 years, Chuck; her sons and their spouses, Charlie and Sara (Shaler) Russell of St. Paul and Ric and Sheila (Cook) Russell of St. Paul; grandchildren, Mia and Louey; sisters, Mildred Gobats of Cook and Elsie (Mark) Turner of Phoenix, Ariz.; local niece, Bailey Soderberg Conger of Cook; local nephews, Ron Kmett and Tom Soderberg of Cook, as well as numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins residing in the United States and Sweden.

Barbara was preceded in death by parents Nils and Ester Soderberg, family friend Morris Anderson, sisters Laura Kmett of Balkan and Bonnie (Leonard) Johnson of Embarrass, brothers Wendell and Earl Soderberg, and son Randy.

Barbara J. "Barb" Johnson, 53, a lifetime resident of Virginia, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 23, 1950, in Virginia, to Marvin and Darlene (Perrault) Shambow. Barb worked as a laborer for the Local 1097. She was a member of the White Earth Nation Tribe and loved to bake, especially her wonderful cinnamon rolls. She found great joy in spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Sheila (Alton) Noland of Frazee, Minn., Lori Johnson and Jackline Johnson, both of Virginia, and Harvey (Erin) Johnson Jr. of Eveleth; mother, Darlene Shambow of Mahnomen, Minn.; nine grandchildren; five brothers; three sisters; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father; sister, Dorothy; and brother, Dean, in infancy.
