Kathleen Brimsek
Kathleen Brimsek, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Friday at Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth with the Rev. Frank Perkovich as celebrant. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Eveleth Cemetery. Arrangements are by Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth.

Kathleen Margarite Prendergast Brimsek was born to John and Mary Prendergast on April 23, 1920, in Arlington, a small town in central Illinois. After graduation from Browns Business College, she moved to Chicago where she worked as secretary to the managing editor for Popular Mechanics magazine.

On Sept. 14, 1946, she married John W. Brimsek, a United States Navy Lieutenant Commander, back from World War II. In 1977, Kathleen and John retired to Eveleth. She had a special joy for life.

She is survived by her three sons, Michael, John and Tom.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John W.; sisters, Roberta Muich and Paula Vontobel; and brother, Joseph Prendergast.

John E. Kauppinen
John E. Kauppinen, 62, SERVICES: Memorial service 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Virginia, with the Rev. Bob Simensen officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. John E. Kauppinen, 62, and a longtime resident of Virginia, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth.

He was born Feb. 7, 1944, in Berkley, Calif., the son of Eino and Ruth (Maki) Kauppinen. John graduated from Cherry High School in 1962. He went on to attend Virginia Junior College, and later earned his degree in law enforcement. On June 24, 1967, John was united in marriage to Marlene Nelmark. John served the public as a police officer for the Virginia Police Department from April 1973 until his retirement in 1991. During that time, he was very instrumental in planning, designing and building the Police Training Center in Virginia.

John realized his passion for teaching, working as a law enforcement instructor at the Hibbing Technical College from 1992 until his retirement in 2004. He was a member of the Virginia Masonic Lodge 264 AF&AM, Virginia Elks Club 1003, the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, and the Pistol Team of the Virginia Police Department. John was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and served on the board of directors of the Co-op Credit Union, both in Virginia. John was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and boating. He loved traveling with his wife and taking the “scenic route”; and was an excellent gourmet cook. Most of all, John enjoyed life, which was evident by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Marlene; daughters, Shari Brazil of Anoka and Jennifer Kauppinen of New Hope; special “daughter of the heart,” Marla Padgett, of Eveleth; twin brother, Bill (Elaine) Kauppinen, of Cherry; a sister, Debbie Esselstrom, of San Diego, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews, including Billy, Tom (Jody) and Julie Kauppinen, and Alayna Esselstrom; many other relatives; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his brother, Alvin.

David Thomas Beck
David Thomas Beck, 51, SERVICES: A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday in the Bauman-Cron Funeral Home Chapel, Virginia. David Thomas Beck, 51, formerly of Makinen and Eveleth, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006.

He was born July 31, 1955, in Mankato, Minn., the son of Thomas Henry and Delores Jean (Weimar) Beck. He graduated from Mankato High School and the Vocational Technical Institute of Mankato, where he received training in appliance repair and refrigeration. David married Gena Robb on Oct. 7, 1978, in Mankato; and was the founder and owner of Beck’s Appliance Service in Makinen. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, following drag racing, football — especially the Vikings — and wrestling.

David is survived by his daughters, Tyanne (Chris Lehman) Beck of Buhl and Tabitha Beck and Tiffany Beck, both of Makinen; a granddaughter, Camille; his father, Thomas, of Medford, Ore.; his mother, Delores Thompson, of Eagle Lake, Minn.; his ex-wife, Gena Beck, of Makinen; brothers and sisters, Dennis Thompson, Keith Oliver, Cathy Iverson, Ginny Lein, Marilyn Pierce and Nancy Oliver, all of southern Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his Grandma Beck; a brother, Jeff Oliver; and uncle, Ed Weimar.

Ellen L. Halunen
Ellen L. Halunen, 93, SERVICES: Funeral 2 p.m. Friday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia, with the Rev. Nathan Sager officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements are with Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

Ellen L. Halunen, 93, of North Branch and formerly of Virginia, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at Green Acres Care Center in North Branch.

Ellen was born July 29, 1913, to Lanti and Hilma (Nygren) Viita in Virginia, where she grew up and attended school. She worked for Jenia Brothers as a bookkeeper. She married Jalmer Halunen on May 2, 1941, in Eveleth. She liked spending time at her cabin at Lake Vermilion-Cook and enjoyed snowmobiling and snowshoeing.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Griffith of Vadnais Heights and Kay (Darryl) Kocemba of Cottage Grove; four grandchildren, Steven (Tracy) Kocemba, David (Amber) Kocemba, Cynthia (Scott) Valleen and Julie (Bob) Grassel; and three great-granddaughters, Jenna Valleen, Elena Kocemba and Carmen Kocemba.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jalmer, on March 6, 1989; her grandson, Michael Kocemba; and her son-in-law, Ray Griffith.

Ruth Ann Strong
Ruth Ann Strong, 81, SERVICES: Tribal rites will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Nett Lake Community Center. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. today at the center. Gilbert Smith will be the spiritual advisor. Burial will be in the family cemetery in Nett Lake. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home of Cook.

Ruth Ann Strong, (ga shi gii shi gook), 81, of Nett Lake passed away Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

She was born on June 17, 1925, on Indian Island in Burntside Lake, Ely, the daughter of Edwin and Bessie (Mesabi) Boshey. The family spent their summers on the island and wintered on the main land. Ruth attended grade school in Ely and later went to boarding school in Pipestone. She briefly lived at the Vermilion Reservation before moving to Nett Lake. She was united in marriage to Albert Strong on Oct. 6, 1948, in Orr. They settled in Nett Lake where they resided the rest of their lives. Ruth was a very active volunteer in community activities. She lived and taught her native customs to her family and others. She got the nickname “Mama Bear” by wearing little kids’ Sorrel boots on her tiny feet. Ruth enjoyed quilting, beadwork, sewing and cooking. You couldn’t leave her home without something to eat. She especially liked going to powwows. She was a member of Bois Forte Band of Chippewa.

She is survived by her children, Phyllis (Robert) Boshey, Mary Strong, Gaynard Strong, all of Tower and Rodney (Lisa) Strong of International Falls; a sister, Caroline Boshey of Tower; seven grandchildren, Ken Jr., Kristal, Donovan, Rhiannon, Jayson and Katie Marie Strong and Allison (Jim) Morrison; seven great-grandchildren, Dylan, Jake, Kaitlin, Ryker, Starlin, Aolani and Cody; numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; along with numerous nephews and nieces and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Albert Strong; one son, Kenneth Strong Sr.; brothers, Milton and George Boshey; sisters, Barbara Boshey, Mary Jane Lorenson, Rosebelle Chosa and Elenor (Darlene) Creg; and a stepdaughter, Sara Kochie.

John Greenlee
John Greenlee, 71, SERVICES: Funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, Buhl, with the Rev. Barbara Hegfors of Chisholm United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Private family inurnment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Buhl. John Greenlee, 71, of Buhl, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, at Cornerstone Villa in Buhl.

He was born Jan. 2, 1935, in St. Joseph, Mo., to Ralph and Mary (Flaten) Greenlee. He had been a Buhl resident since 1942 and was a 1953 graduate of Martin Hughes High School in Buhl. John was united in marriage on Jan. 31, 1957, in Chisholm to Shelby J. Seitz. He retired in 1991 as a maintenance mechanic from Eveleth Mines after 26 years of service. He served as a Buhl city councilman for eight years and served as the Buhl fire chief for many years, as well as an EMT for the Buhl Ambulance.

Survivors include his wife, Shelby; children, Debbie (Robert) Coppin of Puyallup, Wash., Kenneth (Richelle) Greenlee of Anchorage, Alaska; sisters, Stella Erickson of Kitzville, Janet (Mickey) Waycaster of Weaverville, N.C., Gloria (Bardeen) Knox of Atlanta, Ga.; numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Philip A. on Dec. 17, 2004; and a sister, Virginia Koch on Sept. 2, 2005.

Lorraine Alice Brune
Lorraine Alice Brune, 72, SERVICES: Memorial service at 2 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church in Hinckley. Arrangements by the Cremation Society of Minnesota.

Lorraine Alice (Workman) Brune, 72, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at St. Mary’s Hospital.

She was born and raised in Hinckley, was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and graduated from Hinckley High School in 1952. Lorraine worked as a secretary for various companies and also for churches. She spent most of her life as a homemaker. She married Walter Bernard Brune on Aug. 18, 1956, and together they lived in Minneapolis, White Bear Lake, Turtle Lake, Aurora and Hinckley. Lorraine was an avid reader and loved to visit with family and friends. She was devoted to her family, her friends and her church.

Lorraine is survived by her husband, Walter; children, Mark (Rita), Aaron (Barbara) and Stephen (Lori); mother, Alice Workman; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Linda (Tom) Klajeski and Lorene (Kenneth) Vork; four brothers, William (Pat) Workman, Maynard Workman, Byron Workman and Kevin (Bobby) Workman; aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

She is preceded in death by her father, William A. Workman Sr., and brother, Maurice Workman.

Mary Medved

Mary Medved, 89, of Eveleth, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, at St. Raphael’s Health & Rehabilitation Center in Eveleth.

She was born April 23, 1917, to Carl and Agnes (Skerjance) Gerchman in Aurora. She was a graduate of Eveleth High School. She was a parishioner of Resurrection Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Margaret No. 1888. Mary volunteered at the former Arrowhead Health Care Center for many years and enjoyed gardening, her flowers and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph; daughter, Mary Jo Gunderson, of Alborn, Minn.; grandchildren, Jody (Dave) Gales, Jill (Cricker Johnson) Gunderson, Carlye (Jon) Olson and Joe (Kristy) Gunderson; great-grandchildren, Michael, Jonathan, Haley, Wyatt and Carter; one brother, Leo Gerchman, of Eveleth; sisters, Agnes Dickey of Florida, Ann (Ted) Arnett of Arkansas and Angie (Maynard) Arney of Minneapolis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother; and a sister.

William J. Chopp
William J. Chopp, 70, SERVICES: Funeral service was held Thursday at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Virginia. The Rev. Donald Norr and the Rev. Henry Johanson co-officiated. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Military rites were accorded by the Virginia Honor Guard. Arrangements were with the Range Funeral Home in Virginia.

William J. Chopp, 70, of Virginia, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at the Virginia Convalescent Center.

William was born April 14, 1936, to Louis and Eunice (Labeau) Chopp in Eveleth. He was raised in Virginia, where he later became a U.S. Postal service carrier, retiring in 1991. He was united in marriage on May 26, 1956, to Joyce Ulicsni in Virginia.

William was an Army veteran. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; daughter, Jacquelyne Chopp, of Hibbing; son, Steven Chopp, of Rochester, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; three brothers, Jack (Claudia) Chopp of St. Louis, Mo., Mark (Patty) Chopp of Eveleth and Paul (Marilyn) Chopp of Buffalo, Minn.; two sisters, Sheila Irish of Virginia and Susan (Leonard) Kochevar of Gilbert; a cousin, Rosemary Vidmar, of Eveleth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

William was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Thomas, in October 1998; and his brother, Anthony.

Peter P. Mihelich
Peter P. Mihelich, 90, SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chisholm, with Fr. Jon Wild celebrating. Peter P. Mihelich, 90, of Virginia died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at Virginia Regional Medical Center.

He was born April 29, 1916, in Chisholm to George and Anna (Colalarich) Mihelich. He was a lifelong Iron Range resident and was a 1934 graduate of Chisholm High School. Peter was united in marriage on March 10, 1951, in Virginia to Albina M. Jacksha. He worked as a millwright in construction, was in the merchant marine and was the former owner of the Arrowhead Bar in Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by two sisters, Stephanie Lucas of Rogers, Minn., and Helen (Edward) Lekatz of Buhl; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Albina; one brother; and three sisters.

Florence M. Bourgin
Florence M. Bourgin, 101, SERVICES: Cremation has been accorded and a private memorial service was held in Peoria, Ill., on Aug. 5. Burial of ashes will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Virginia at a later date.

Florence M. Bourgin, 101, of Peoria died at 1:25 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at Proctor Endowment Health Care in Peoria.

She was born July 13, 1905, in Bronxville, Westchester County, N.Y., to John and Amelie Pettersson Olsen. She married John Malkus Ryberg on July 7, 1928, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He died Aug. 18, 1934, in Duluth. She married David A. Bourgin of Virginia on Jan. 17, 1951. He died Sept. 13, 1978, in Rochester, Minn. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Peoria. She was a longtime member of the Zenith Chapter, Eastern Star in Duluth. Florence lived in Honolulu, Hawaii, for 17 years before coming to Peoria in 1997. Prior to living in Hawaii, she lived for many years in Duluth and Virginia.

Survivors include one son, John G. (Marjorie) Ryberg of Peoria; one stepson, Gordon (Kay) Bourgin of Logan, Ohio; one grandson; two granddaughters; and four stepgrandsons.

She was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Mitzi Bourgin Vieritz; and one stepgranddaughter.

Eleanor Carlson
Eleanor Carlson, 91, SERVICES: Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Cowherd & Parrott Funeral Home in Greensburg, Ky.

Eleanor Carlson Gorin Skaff, 91, passed away Friday, Oct. 6, 2006.

Survivors include one son, Walt (Anne) Gorin; two granddaughters, Michelle Gorin and Jill Gorin; three brothers, Clint Carlson of International Falls, Walt Carlson of St. Paul and Myron Carlson of Nashwauk.

Allie A. Pringle
Allie A. Pringle, 98, SERVICES: In loving memory we celebrate the life of Allie A. Pringle; wife, mother, grandmother and friend. At Allie's request there will be no formal visitation or services. She will be remembered lovingly by her family and friends.

Allie A. Pringle, 98, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, in Surprise, Ariz.

She was born in Pike River, Minn., on Aug. 17, 1908.

Allie spent much of her life living in Seattle, Wash., as wife to Orville Pringle and mother to Violet R. Koshar. She also cared for numerous children and families in Seattle over the years.

Allie is remembered by family and friends, granddaughter Lynn Campbell; son-in-law Robert Koshar, John and Delores Majetich and family.
