Wayne Lens
Wayne Lens, 62, of Montevideo, passed away on Monday, September 26, 2011 at the Chippewa County- Montevideo Hospital with his wife and two sons by his side.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, September 29 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Montevideo with Father Jim Devorak officiating.
Wayne Joseph Lens was born October 8, 1948 in Cottage Grove. He was baptized at the Cathedral in St. Paul and confirmed at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent.
Wayne was raised in the Ghent area and lived with his parents Charles and Mary. He attended school in Marshall graduating from Marshall High School. He worked with his father at Marshall Sand and Gravel before starting his own independent career in landscaping.
On December 21, 1974 Wayne was united in marriage to Rose Knutson in Marshall. To this union two sons were born. Wayne and Rose raised their family in Montevideo as Wayne worked in the landscaping business.

Avis Monson
Avis Monson, 97, of Granite Falls, passed away Monday, September 26, 2011 at the Granite Falls Manor.
Funeral Services were held Friday, September 30, at Granite Falls Lutheran Church with Pastor Steve Carmany officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery in Granite falls.
Avis Virgil Monson was born August 4, 1914 in Hazel Run Township, the daughter of Gerhard and Cora Wilson. She was baptized at Bergen Lutheran Church and confirmed at Hazel Run Lutheran Church. Avis grew up in the Hazel Run area and attended the Roadside Country School.
On March 12, 1934 Avis was united in marriage to Lyle Monson in Granite Falls. To this union eight children were born. Avis and Lyle lived in Minneapolis for a short time during World War II before moving to back to Granite Falls.

Gene Alton Johnson
Gene Alton Johnson, 82, of Montevideo, died Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Chippewa County - Montevideo Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 28, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Montevideo.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, September 27, at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Montevideo.
Burial with Military Honors took place at Sunset Memorial Cemetery immediately following the funeral service.

Curtis Gustav Leppke
Curtis G. Leppke, 83, of Clarkfield passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dawson, due to a short battle with cancer.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, September 28, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Omro Township, officiated by Pastor Allen Lonnquist. Burial followed at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Omro Town-ship, Yellow Medicine Co.
Curtis Gustav Leppke was born November 30, 1927 in Maxwell Township, Lac qui Parle Co., to Fred H. and Alma (Bohn) Leppke. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Decem-ber of 1927 by Pastor R. P. Young and confirmed on June 1, 1941 by Pastor A.W. Fuerstenau.

Craig Johnson
Craig Scott Johnson, 54, of Montevideo, died Monday, September 19, 2011 at his home in Montevideo.
Services will be held on Sunday, October 2 at Wing Bain Funeral Chapel in Granite Falls. Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m., with a prayer service at 1:30 p.m. followed by interment at Doncaster Cemetery near Granite Falls.
Craig Johnson was born April 29, 1957 in Minneapolis, the son of Lyle and Janet Johnson. He attended grade school there and moved with his family to Granite Falls in 1968 where he attended school and later became interested in music and played drums with various groups and friends. Music was a lifelong passion for Craig. He also enjoyed traveling and experiencing different surroundings and lived and worked in many interesting places across the country.
Craig is survived by brother Kim (Cynthia) Johnson of Montevideo. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Todd and Randall.
Funeral arrangements are with Wing-Bain Funeral Home of Granite Falls.

Gene L. VanDeVeire
Gene L. VanDeVeire, 67, of Cottonwood, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Tuesday, September 20, 2011.
Funeral services were held Saturday at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wood Lake. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Gene Louis was born on April 16, 1944 in Wood Lake to parents Cyriel “Zeke” and Hannah (Bahn) VanDeVeire. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wood Lake. Gene graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1962.
On January 22, 1972, Gene was united to his best friend Betty Brouwer at the Christian Reformed Church in Clara City. He worked for PPG Ind. for 20 years. The last few years he grew pumpkins, squash and delicious watermelons and would share with whomever would enjoy the fruits of his labor. His lawn and all the upkeep also kept him busy. He also enjoyed watching his son-in-law, Brandon, race at the Monte track and they would take the motor home and follow the racing team to bigger races. The love of his life was his family especially watching his grandsons in sports and his granddaughter Emma in dance. His other enjoyments were watching the Minnesota Twins play, NASCAR racing, spending time at the lake with his family and his constant companion, Fuzzy. He also was a member of the Cottonwood Fire Department for 25 years. Everyone knew him as “Geno” or “Grandpa Geno.”

Rosella “Rose” Hartke
Rosella “Rose” Lorrain (Slettedahl) Hartke, 91, of Wood Lake passed away Thursday, September 22, 2011 at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Funeral services were held Sunday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wood Lake.
Rosella “Rose” Lorrain Slettedahl was born August 8, 1920 in Sioux Agency Township, near Echo, to Paul and Anna (Oye) Slettedahl. She was baptized and confirmed in the Wisconsin Lutheran faith by Rev. Troub. Rose attended country school in Sioux Agency Township. On March 30, 1938 she was united in marriage to George Hartke at St. John’s Church in Wood Lake. Rose was a cook at the Wood Lake Public School for 16 years. She was a cook at a restaurant by New Ulm for awhile, and then worked at Zytec in Redwood Falls for many years before retiring. Rose belonged to the Birthday Club and was its last living member. She enjoyed cooking, refinishing furniture, and making quilts for her family.

Ione L. Erickson
Ione L. Erickson, 84, of Willmar, died on Monday, September 12, 2011.
A celebration of her life was held on Friday, September 16, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar.
A private burial will be held at Svea Lutheran Church Cemetery in Svea.
Ione Lucille Erickson was born on March 19, 1927 in Willmar, the daughter of Helmer and Anna (Sundin) Christiansen. She grew up in Willmar and graduated from Willmar High School with the class of 1945. She attended Gustavus Adolphus College for two years and then attended Minneapolis Business College. She returned to Willmar and was united in marriage to Rayburn Erickson on November 27, 1948 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. The couple lived primarily in Svea and the Willmar area. Ione worked various jobs, including as a ward clerk at Rice Memorial Hospital and as a long-time secretary for Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. Ray died on October 27, 1980. Ione continued to work in Willmar and retired from Bethel Lutheran Church when she was 65.

Ronald B. Johnson
Ronald B. Johnson, 68. of Granite Falls, died at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis on Monday, October 24, 2011.
Memorial services were held on Friday, October 28 at the Granite Falls Lutheran Church.
Ronald Bruce Johnson was born on Dec. 22, 1942, in Granite Falls, the son of Arnold and Ann (Knudson) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1962. Ron proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1963 - 1965.

Bernice Roe
Bernice Roe, 83, of Granite Falls passed away Saturday, October 29, 2011 at the Granite Falls Manor.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November 7, at the Granite Falls Lutheran Church with burial in the Granite Falls City Cemetery.
Bernice SyBella Roe was born in Montevideo on January 28, 1928.
She was the first of two children born to Ole and Alice Anderson. She graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1945 and attended St. Cloud Teachers College where she received her two year degree in elementary education. Her teaching career began at Maynard Public School where she taught till 1954.
