Joseph Lyshik

Joseph A. Lyshik, age 83, a resident of Waterloo, IA, died May 16, 1997, at Allen Memorial Hospital of cancer.

Funeral services were held May 19 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Full military rites were conducted at the cemetery by American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 1623. Memorials may be directed to the church.

Joseph was born February 6, 1914, in Little Falls, MN, the son of Vance and Lucy (Minshaw) Lyshik. He married Ida Sulentic on June 6, 1936, in Waterloo. He was employed in method setup at John Deere Tractor Works for 42 years, retiring in 1981. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the European Theatre.

Survivors include his wife; a sister, Stella Vaverek of Little Falls and a brother, Richard of Milwaukee, WI. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Stafiej and Hattie Brown and three brothers, Pete, Stanley and Cyril.

Norris K. Carnes

Norris K. Carnes, age 102, passed away on May 11, 1997, at his home in St. Paul, MN.

Norris K. Carnes spent his life working in the Minnesota livestock industry, taking the Central Livestock Association and himself to national prominence. Carnes was the general manager of the “Central” in South St. Paul for 44 years. He retired in 1974 after guiding the organization to prominence as one of the world’s largest livestock marketing associations.

He was given one of the highest honors in the industry in 1969 when his portrait was placed on a wall in the Saddle & Sirloin Club in Chicago’s Stockyards Inn.

Carnes was also honored by the University of Minnesota in 1951 when he was given the outstanding achievement in agricultural affairs award and another portrait hanging in the university’s Livestock Hall of Fame in 1969. Carnes served on livestock advisory committees convened by U.S. secretaries of agriculture in every administration from Franklin Roosevelt’s to Richard Nixon’s. He was active with the Minnesota State Fair, where he served as superintendent, on the Board of Managers and in other positions. He was inducted into the Minnesota State Fair Hall of Fame in 1977. Carnes V. on the fairgrounds is named after him. Carnes also was a nationally recognized judge at horse shows throughout the United States and Canada. A native of Royalton, Carnes obtained a bachelor’s degree in animal husbandry at the University of Minnesota in 1917. He served in the U.S. field artillery during World War I and earned a Silver Star for gallantry in France. At 24, he was reportedly the youngest captain to serve in the field artillery at that time. After the war, he returned to the University of Minnesota and earned a master’s degree in agricultural economics in 1923. He was recently recognized by the Royalton American Legion Club.

Survivors include three children, Norris Carnes and Jean McMillan of St. Paul and Constance Willhite of Richmond, VA. He also had eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Clarence Johnson

Clarence Johnson, age 89, a resident of Detroit Lakes, MN died Sunday, May 18, 1997 at St. Mary’s Regional Heath Center in Detroit Lakes.

Funeral services were May 22 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala, MN with Pastor Alan Bray officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Clarence was born March 16, 1908 in Minneapolis, MN to the late Albin and Mathilda (Anderson) Johnson. He grew up in Elmdale Township where he farmed for 15 years. Clarence was united in marriage with Rose Lawrence on January 27, 1937 in Upsala, MN. They moved to Mound, MN where he was employed with Minneapolis Moline for 20 years. He then worked for Van Dussan for 10 years before retiring in 1975. They resided in Detroit Lakes, MN the past five years. Clarence was an avid outdoors man who loved to hunt, fish, and do yard work. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mound, MN.

Survivors include his wife, Rose of Detroit Lakes; sons, Ronald and wife Marlene of Detroit Lakes; a daughter, Lenore Hemstock and husband Neil of Spring Park; a sister, Gladys Chuba of Upsala; 3 grandsons; and 2 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harold and a sister, Evelyn. Casket bearers Dale Johnson, Chad and Todd Hemstock; Allan Nelson, Roger Chuba and Wally Clark.

Agnes Kuklok

Agnes Kuklok, age 97, of Royalton, MN died Sunday, May 19, 1997 at Country Manor Health Care Center in Sartell, MN.

Funeral services were May 22, 1997 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Royalton, MN with Fr. Laurn Virnig, Fr. Paul Zylla, and Fr. Ken Brenny con-celebrating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Agnes was born December 21, 1899 in Holding Township, Minnesota to Sebastian and Sophia (Schlichting) Warzecha. She was united in marriage to Nicholas Kuklok May 28, 1918 in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole, Minnesota. Agnes and Nicholas farmed in Buckman Township until 1929. They then moved to Langola Township in Benton County until 1972 when they moved to Royalton. Agnes was very active in mission work, baking, handcrafts and gardening. She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary in Royalton and Christian Mothers Rosary Society at Holy Trinity.

Survivors include sons, Alfred and wife Dorothy of Minnetonka, MN, Roger and wife Karen of Royalton; daughter-in-law Rose (Devine) Kuklok of Grand Forks, ND; daughters, Louise Moga of Woodbury, MN, Elvira Stumpf and husband Herb of Pierz, MN, Bibianna Gazett and husband John of St. Cloud, MN, Anselma Czech and husband Alfred of Grand Rapids, MN; brother, Michael Warzecha of St. Cloud; 36 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Nicholas on August 15, 1972; sons, Longinus, Delmar and Claude; brothers, Zach, Philip, Edward, Stanley, Vincent, Frank; sisters, Lucy, Victoria, Constance, Cecila, and Dorothy.

Honorary Pallbearers were Hannah Hohmann, Mildred Boehmer, Bernice Wollack, Rose Czech, Margaret and Theresa Fussy, Marcella Faust and Irene Moga.

Pallbearers were John Gazett, Joel Stumpf, Gordon, Ben and Jerome Kuklok and Tom Moga.

Michael Cluka

Michael Cluka, age 45, a resident of Upsala, MN, died May 14, 1997, at his home.

Funeral services were held May 17 at Community Covenant Church in Upsala, with Pastor Rudy King officiating. Burial was in the Elmdale Lutheran Cemetery.

Michael was born March 6, 1952, in Little Falls, MN, to George and Elaine (Moe) Cluka. He grew up in Little Falls and attended Our Lady of Lourdes School and the Little Falls Community High School. He was united in marriage to Luanne Wolters on June 20, 1981, at Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls. Michael worked at Little Falls Printing and the Little Falls Transcript newspaper for many years prior to attending Brainerd Jr. College from which he graduated. He worked for Viking Waterbed of St. Stephen and currently was employed with J.V.B., Inc., of Little Falls. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, buying and selling sports cards and was a Coca-Cola memorabilia collector.

Survivors include his wife, Luanne of Upsala; mother, Elaine Cluka of Little Falls; a son, Tony and two daughters, Laura and Emma, all residing at home; brothers, Charlie and wife Marilyn of Barnum, MN, Jim and wife Barb of Little Falls, Bill of Duluth, MN, and Don of Alaska; sisters, Lynne Fisher of Mahtomedi, MN; Pat Meyer and husband Jim of Buckman, MN; Nancy Caspers and husband Rich of Buckman, MN, Martha Nelson and husband Rich of Pierz, MN, Cindy Cluka of Little Falls, Mary Thesing and husband Brian of Ramsey, MN, Theresa Bundy and husband Roy of Paynesville, MN, Joanie Verhaagh and husband Chuck of St. Stephen, MN; grandmother, Hattie Moe of Port Angeles, WA. He was preceded in death by his father, George Cluka.

Casketbearers were Jim Meyer, Rich Caspers, Rich Nelson, Brian Thesing, Roy Bundy, Chuck Verhaagh, Louie Kowalczyk and Paul Delane.

Alice Owens

Alice L. Owens, age 50, a resident of Merrifield, MN, died May 18, 1997, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center.

Memorial services were held May 21 at Nelson-Dolan Funeral Home in Brainerd with Father Seamus Walsh officiating.

Alice was born in Little Falls on June 17, 1946, to Regina (Urai) and Benedict Langer. She had been employed by Crow Wing County Social Service Center since 1989.

Survivors include a son, Jay Owens of St. Cloud, MN; a daughter, Paula Owens of Merrifield; her mother, Regina Langer of Pierz, MN; two sisters, Marjorie Nolan of Brainerd, MN, and Marce Boyd of Aitkin, MN, and her companion, Denny Berberich of Merrifield.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Evelyn Miller

Evelyn M. Miller, age 72, a resident of Lakefield, MN, and formerly of Lewiston, MN, died May 14 at Worthington Regional Medical Center.

Mass of Christian burial was May 17 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Lewiston with the Rev. Edward McGrath officiating. Burial was in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery.

Evelyn was born September 2, 1924, near Lewiston to Gertrude Schott. She graduated from Lewiston High School and married Edward F. Miller on January 1, 1945. They farmed south of Lewiston until his death on October 31, 1984. She has lived near Lakefield for the past nine years. Evelyn enjoyed gardening, flowers and crafts. She had been a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Lewiston and St. Rose Council of Catholic Women; currently she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lakefield and belonged to home extension groups in Lewiston and Lakefield. Survivors include nine children, Coralyn Kabes of New Prague, MN, Lanice Pavek and husband James of Shakopee, MN, Virginia Plaza and husband Rod of Mound, MN, Stuart Miller of St. Charles, MN, Laurenda Comero of Fountain City, WI, Glenn Miller of Circle Pines, MN, Grace Rasmussen and husband Gary of Lakefield; Marcella Kelzer and husband John of Randall; Mary Peichel and husband George of Fairfax; 24 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Frank Miller of Lewiston and one niece. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son-in-law, Rick Kabes. Pallbearers were James Pavek, Rodrigo Plaza, Gary Rasmussen, John Kelzer, George Peichel and Jason Kabes.

Bridget Fisher

Bridget “Birdie” M. Fisher, age 71, a resident of Hillman, MN, died May 7, 1997, at the Foley Nursing Center in Foley, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 10 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Bulldog Lake with the Rev. Laurn Virnig and Rev. Vincent Ott officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Bridget “Birdie” Martha Fisher was born October 8, 1925, in North Benton, Benton County, MN to the late Stanley and Martha (Zulawski) Dombovy. She grew up in Benton County and attended school in a one room country school house in North Benton. Following her schooling she worked in Minneapolis for Honeywell during the war years, and also at a Chinese restaurant. She was united in marriage to Vernon L. Fisher on October 8, 1946. Following their marriage the couple lived on the home farm near Bulldog Lake in Roosevelt Township, Crow Wing County, MN where they farmed. In her later years she worked at the school in Pine Center as a cook from 1982 to 1983 when she retired. Following the couple’s retirement, they continued to live on the home farm. After her husband’s death on November 22, 1993, Birdie lived for a year with her children and then moved to Heritage Place in Foley, residing there until death. She was member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Bulldog Lake, St. Elizabeth’s Society of Bulldog Lake, Hillman Legion Auxiliary and volunteered at the Foley Nursing Center. She had a great ability for cheering up the residents of the nursing home, was an excellent cook and demonstrated her faith in everything she did, and with those she worked and served.

Survivors include sons and daughters, John Fisher and wife Dee of Harding, MN, Ronald Fisher and wife Patti of Angora, MN, Lawrence Fisher of Hillman, MN, Jean Young and husband Jim of Ramey, MN, Jan Matvick and husband Joe of Princeton, MN, Jenny Matvick and husband Tony of Ramey, MN and Julie Kampa and husband Eddie of Ramey, MN; half sisters, Genevieve Fleck and Josephine Hayes, both of Pierz, MN; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, infant daughter, Angel; brother, Henry Dombovy; half brother, Richard Orzechowski; grandchildren, Tara Lynn Fisher and Ivy Sue Matvick.

Honorary pallbearers were Chad Matvick, Eric Matvick, Clay Matvick, Jessie Young, Jason Fisher, April Young, Holly Young, Amanda Young, Jacki O’kroi, Katie Matvick and Molly Kempa.

Casketbearers were Josh Matvick, Jeremy Young, Curt Fisher, Aaron Fisher, Adam Fisher and Clint Matvick.
