George Raymond Eckman

George Raymond Eckman, Moose Lake, MN, died May 11, 1998, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth, MN.

Services will be held May 18 at 2 p.m. at the chapel at the Minnesota Veterans Cemetery by Camp Ripley. Burial will follow in the cemetery. Arrangements were with the Cremation Society of Minnesota.

George was born in St. Paul, MN on May 6, 1921 and attended St. Paul schools. He later moved to Little Falls, MN. George served in WWII from 1942 to 1945 in the European theatre of operations including the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valour. After the service he worked for the Northern Pacific RR for nine years as a lineman. He was then employed at the Moose Lake State Hospital for a short period of time as charge aide on Cottage C-1. He worked for the Lummus Construction Company while they built the International Refineries in Wrenshall, after which he transferred to the refinery where he remained for eleven years. He married Violet Lindquist in May, 1995 and they lived in Wrenshall for two years after which they moved to Island Lake near Moose Lake, which is the current residence. George again worked at the MLSH as plant maintenance engineer in the sheet metal shop from where he retired in 1986. He belonged to the Moose Lake/ Carlton VFW Post 124 and the Little Falls American Legion 46. George was very talented with the ability to work with sheet metals, wood craft and projects and he enjoyed the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife Vi and two brothers, Raphael Eckman of Little Falls and Walter Eckman of Waterford, MI.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and a sister.

Duane Robert Hoffman

Duane Robert Hoffman, age 66, passed away May 11, 1998, at his home in Richardson Township.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 15 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding, MN, with Father Roger Thoennes and Father Dennis Hoffman con-celebrating. Burial took place at the Pine Tree Cemetery in Granite Twp., MN.

Duane was born on April 12, 1932, in Platte Lake, MN, to Joseph M. and Alvina (Marschel) Hoffman. He married Rose M. Wacker on October 15, 1956, at Holy Family Church at Bulldog Lake, MN. Duane founded Hoffman Gravel and Excavating Inc. in May of 1961. He enjoyed deer hunting, snowmobiling, playing cards, ice fishing, and playing in the dirt. He was a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding, and a veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife Rose of Richardson Township; his children Kathy Hoffman Tax of Pierz, MN, Greg of Hillman, MN, Kim and Ken Clairmont of Rogers, MN, Gary and Jackie of Hillman, Robert and Bernie of Pierz; grandchildren Jeff, Molly, Kevin, Curtis, Jonathan, Matthew, Gregory, Nick, and Cody; sisters Delores and Jim Kounkel of St. Mathias, MN, Joyce and Ray Korsten of Richfield, MN, Bernice “Beany” and Don Seagren of Onamia, MN; one brother Alvin “Sonny” and Joyce of Brainerd, MN; and mother-in-law Marie Wacker of Pierz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law Matthew Wacker, and son-in-law Bob Tax May 5, 1995.

Casketbearers were Brian, Dennis, James, Leonard, and Joseph Wacker, Duane Boser, and Jerald Banick.

Sister Mary Heiling

Sister Mary Barbara (Agnes) Heiling, age 91, died May 10, 1998, at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls, MN.

A Mass of Christian burial took place at St. Francis Convent on May 13.

Sister Mary Barbara was born March 30, 1907, near Browerville, MN. She was the oldest child born to the late Frank and Julianna (Marschler) Heiling. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls, MN, on August 11, 1928. She made first profession of vows on August 12, 1930, and final vows, August 12, 1933. She celebrated 60 years as a Franciscan Sister in 1988. Sister Barbara ministered to the sick and elderly, was a gardener, laundress and helper in the kitchen. She served in Wahpeton, ND, Breckenridge and Little Falls.

Survivors include her sisters, Kate Heiling, Browerville; Sister Janice, OSB, Bismark, ND; nieces and nephews and her Sisters in religious life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Peter, John and Victor and sister, Hattie.

Elizabeth Schmitt
Elizabeth Schmitt, age 96, a resident of Buckman, MN, died May 11, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 14 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Buckman, with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Elizabeth was born July 1, 1901, in Rice, MN, to Anthony and Margaret Rajkowski. She was united in marriage with Rueben Schmitt on August 13, 1923, in Rice. During their marriage, they lived in St. Stephen, MN, until 1933 when they moved to Buckman. Elizabeth was a great sports fan, including the Twins and Vikings teams. She also enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Survivors include daughters, Betty and husband Robert Walquist of Marine on St. Croix, MN, Mary Ann and husband Donald Morrill of Killeen, TX, Joyce Schirmers of Rogers, MN; daughter-in-law, Freda Schmitt of Buckman; nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Rueben; son James; 12 brothers and sisters.

Honorary casketbearers were Anne Pohlkamp, Mary Gohl, Annie Hanneken, and Margaret Lochner.
Casketbearers were Chris Hesch, Rob Schmitt, Kenny Bemboom, Greg Schirmers, Tom Schirmers and Carol Schirmers.

Ralph C. Anderson

Ralph C. Anderson, age 69, a resident of Pierz, MN, formerly of Cushing, MN, died May 11, 1998, at his home in Pierz.

Funeral services were held May 16 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Burial was in the Cushing Union Cemetery in Cushing.

Ralph Clifford Anderson was born May 10, 1929, in Cushing, Morrison County, MN, the son of the late Henry E. and Bertha S. (Thorson) Anderson. He was raised on the family farm and also farmed the same land which was homesteaded by his grandfather in 1891. He attended School District #106 and graduated from Little Falls High School in the class of 1947. He retired from farming in 1980 because of his health. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Cushing, served as sexton for the Cushing Union Cemetery, was a charter member of the Randall - Cushing Lions Club, a member of the Elks Lodge 0615 of Brainerd and the Sons of Norway (Sagatun) Lodge #1-018 of Brainerd, charter member of the Cushing Community Club, charter member of the Randall Sportsman Club, 25-year member of the Randall Community Club, National Rifle Association, Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, North American Fishing Club, and served as Township Fire Warden for 28 years and was on the Cushing Town Board for 12 years.

Survivors include his sister, Betty Bellamy and husband Carl of Moundsview, MN; sister-in-law, Betty Anderson of Cushing, MN, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harlan Anderson in 1957, Henry R. Anderson in 1992 and Rudy E. Anderson in 1995.

Rose V. DeFoe

Rose V. DeFoe, age 73, a resident of Long Prairie, MN, died May 15, 1998, at her home in Long Prairie.
Funeral services were held May 19 at the Stephan-Stein Funeral Home Chapel, Long Prairie, MN, with the Rev. Paul J. Twist officiating. Burial took place in Bearhead Cemetery, Bruce Township, Todd County, MN.

Rose DeFoe was born April 23, 1925, in Augusta, WI, to Frank B. and Mabel E. (Cox) Turner. She married Joe DeFoe on March 26, 1971, in Kandiyohi, MN. She lived in Beloit, WI, and grew up in rural Swanville, MN. Before her marriage, she lived in Wheatridge, CO, where she did grounds work at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. After her marriage, she lived in rural Swanville, Bruce Township. She has lived in Long Prairie since August 1991. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and T.V.

Survivors include brothers and sisters, Donald Turner, Waterloo, IA, Allen (Florence) Turner, Lakewood, CO; Dolly (Jim) Parish, Long Prairie; Betty (Bill) Staadts, Denver, CO; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, May 19, 1993; her parents; a sister, Dorothy Smith and four brothers, Chester, Carl, Earl, and Steven.

Casketbearers were Daniel Sutton, Robert Sutton, Loren Sutton, Nathan Coyer, Leslie Smith, Jeff Baum, Jim Parish and Leo Sutton.

John W. Merchlewicz

John W. Merchlewicz, age 95, a resident of St. Cloud, MN, died May 14, 1998, at St. Benedict’s Center.

Funeral services were May 18 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Burial was in the Assumption Cemetery.

John was born June 23, 1902, in Little Falls, MN, to Joseph and Frances (Sniezek) Merchlewicz. He married Loretta Vouk on June 14, 1932, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in St. Cloud. He worked for St. Cloud Milling Co. (H.C. Ervin) for 32 years. He later worked as a maintenance engineer for District 742 schools for about 14 years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral Parish and Crosier Apostalates.

Survivors include his wife, children, James of St. Cloud, Joseph of Andover, MN, Patricia O’Connell of Seattle, WA; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and a sister, Evangeline Gwost of Little Falls.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters.

Memorial were preferred.
