Gary R. Forshaw
Gary R. Forshaw lost his two year battle with cancer. He died in his Duluth home at the age of 45.

He was born in Duluth to Robert and Shirley Forshaw and had attended Proctor Schools. Gary enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1975. He later sailed on various Ore Carriers, including the Columbia Star. With the Olgeby Norton Marine Service Company, he most recently served as a foreman on the ARMCO. Gary loved the outdoors, collector cars, snowmobiling and sailing the Great Lakes.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his sister Nancy Forshaw of Proctor, uncle Lloyd Hansen of Hermantown, his dog Bruiser and many friends.

A memorial service was held Wednesday.

George Perkins
Services were held yesterday for George Perkins of Saginaw. He died Thurs., July 24, 2003, at the age of 80.

George was a combat wounded veteran of WW II. He served in the Army in the 44th Infantry Division, 71st Regiment, L company. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He worked at Hemlock Garage for many years as a mechanic; he then bought the Thomas Garage on Michigan Street and was the proud owner of it until he retired at age 65.

George is survived by his children Dale of Minneapolis, Duane of Duluth, Bruce of Alborn, Bobbi Maish (Mike) of Culver, Ron of Saginaw and Keith (Gail) of Culver, 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, his sister Gladys Riggle and brother Ronald Baumgartner.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park with military honors accorded by the VFW Honor Guard.

Bridget 'Bride' (Connolly) Baldwin
Services were held yesterday, Wed. for Bridget 'Bride' (Connolly) Baldwin of Proctor, who died Sat., July 26, 2003, in the Benedictine Health Care Center. She was 70.

She was born in St. Johns, Newfoundland in 1932 to Stanislaus and Margaret (Skanes) Connolly. She married Lloyd W. Baldwin in 1952. She volunteered at St. Mary's Hospital and Nopeming Nursing Home. Bride was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church and was active in the Legion of Mary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lloyd in 1991, her grandson Nicholas Shrake, and one brother.

She is survived by her children Mary Ann Drabik of Canada, Paul (Doreen) of California, Robert (Phyllis), James, Mark, Catherine 'Cathy' (Paul LaPorte), all of Duluth, Margaret 'Peggy' (Terry) Shrake of Eagan, Theresa Baldwin and Louis (Patty), both of Cambridge, William 'Bill' of Denver, 24 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery.

Joseph S. Kalm
Joseph S. Kalm, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1965, died Tues., July 22, 2003, as a result of a motorcycle accident. He was 55.

The Cloquet resident was born Sept. 22, 1947 in Moose Lake, Minn., to Owen and Shirley (Golen) Kalm. Joe grew up in Cloquet. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He also served in the 477th Army Reserve Medical Unit and the 109th Army National Guard, retiring after 20 years. During the 1970's Joe worked on the ore boats in Duluth. He worked at Potlatch from 1978 until 2002. He married Sherry Peterson on June 16, 1993. Joe was a member of the MN Goldwings - Twin Ports Chapter and was associated with the Goldwing Touring Association. He was a former member of the Scanlon Volunteer Fire Dept.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife Sherry on Sept. 1, 2000.

He is survived by his son Bryan (Tara Nelson) of Mahtowa, his parents Owen and Shirley Kalm of Carlton, brother Guy (Jami) Kalm of Cloquet, a niece and two nephews, and special friend Janey Mitchell of Cloquet.

Burial was at Maple Grove Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard.

Ralph Arthur Rohweder
Former Mayor James L. Rohweder is saddened by the loss of his brother Ralph Arthur Rohweder. He died Fri., July 18, 2003, in his Mount Vernon, Va. home. He was 86.

Ralph was born on July 4, 1917 in Winona, Minn. and grew up in Duluth. He graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1935 and attended Duluth Junior College from 1935-37 and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities from 1937-38. He joined the St. Paul Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) in 1939, where fellow members included Minnesota Gov. Harold Stassen and Warren Burger, who later became chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Upon moving to Chicago in 1942 to work for the National Safety Council, he became president of the Chicago Jaycees, then the Illinois Jaycees, then national vice president and ran for national president. He was also the executive director of the National Society for Medical Research for 20 years. He moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1968 where he authored the Emergency Medical Services Act of 1973.

He is survived by his wife Mary, 13 children, 21 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Verena 'Fran' Marie Lind
Services were held yesterday for Verena 'Fran' Marie Lind (Swanstrom) Atkins. The Pike Lake resident died Sun., Aug. 10, 2003, at the age of 90.

Fran was born in Duluth. She was a 1931 graduate of Denfeld High School, and went on to Duluth Teachers College. Fran married Neill S. Atkins. Fran worked at Brown and Bigelow Advertising, the Letter Shop in the Alworth Building and Olafson-Genereau Realty, and she was a Gallop Poll reporter and was a longtime secretary at Pike Lake Presbyterian Church, where she was also a member. Fran was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary Post 28.

Fran is survived by her son Neill (Rose) Atkins of Duluth, a grandson Sean Thompson of Duluth, and two step-grandchildren.

Burial was at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Chester J. 'Chuck' Carroll
Services were held last week for Chester J. 'Chuck' Carroll. He died Sun., Aug. 3 in a Duluth hospital. He was 60.

He was born in Duluth and worked as a millwright at Georgia Pacific for 30 years. He was a member of the Proctor Moose, an avid gardener, and loved working on mechanical things, camping, hunting, and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Gwen; children Steven (Sherry), Jamie (Lisa), Jada, Taralee and Alan; grandchildren Katie, Gina, Jeffery, Elizabeth, Hanna, Haas, Haley and Margaret; siblings Sharlene (George) Letchworth, Ruby (Daniel) Ellenson, Arlene (Thomas) Bollinger, Glenn (Kris) Armstrong; his stepfather, John Allen Armstrong and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Anthony 'Uncle' Budimir
Anthony 'Uncle' Budimir, who was a custodial worker for the Proctor School District, died Mon., Aug. 4, 2003 in a Duluth hospital. He was 63.

He graduated from Morgan Park High School. Tony also worked at Diamond Tool, the U.S. Steel Cement Plant, the Duluth School District and St. Mary's Hospital. He was a member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church and the West Duluth Moose Lodge #1478.

He is survived by his wife Valerie; brothers Robert of Grand Rapids, Stephen (Shirley) and Daniel (Alice) both of Duluth and Frank (Renee) of Wyoming; sisters Mathilda Budimir of Duluth, Mary Walters of Hibbing and Kathryne (James) Clark of Michigan and many nieces and nephews.

Burial in Oneota Cemetery.

Wayne C. Bibeau
Wayne C. Bibeau, whose classmates gathered at his home just two weeks ago for their annual reunion, died Fri., Aug. 15 in a Duluth hospital. He was 70.

He was born April 3, 1933, in Duluth to Wilfred and Helen (Gustafson) Bibeau. He graduated from Morgan Park High School and was a Veteran of the Korean War. He was a switchman, brakeman, and conductor for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 41 years until his retirement. Wayne enjoyed spending time as a ranger at Enger Park Golf Course. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church. Wayne was an avid golfer, bowler, and enjoyed biking, reading, yard work, and spending winters in Florida. He coached little league baseball, softball, and basketball for many years.

He is survived by his wife Leona (Katchmark-Pionk), son Vinnie (Connie) of Belleville, Ill., daughter Kathryn (Paul) Shykes of Cloquet, grandson Paul Shykes, Jr., step-sons Scott (Karen) Pionk of Hermantown and Craig Pionk of Proctor, step-daughters Carmen (James) Cuhel of Superior, Wis., Christi (Mark) Slattengren of Duluth and Stephanie (Rusty) Johnson of Minneapolis, 15 step-grandchildren, a step-great-grandson, a brother Wilfred (Fay) Bibeau of Duluth, sisters Shirley (Robert) Chambers of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Joanne (Ralph) Arezzo of Duluth, and many relatives and friends.

Rev. Fr. James Bissonette officiated at the services. Interment was at Oneota Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Betty Jane Elstad
Betty Jane Elstad, who was a member of the All-American Trap Shooting Team died unexpectedly Fri., Aug. 15, 2003, in her Anderson Rd. home. Services were held earlier this week. She was 77.

She was born to Richard Toor and Peggy Kaspari and was a Proctor resident most of her life.

Betty was raised by her grandparents Katherine 'Nana' and Clarence Toor, as their own. She had lived in Tampa, Fla., for the past nine years, moving to Hermantown in June. She was a graduate of Proctor High School and Cosmetology Careers Unlimited. Betty was the owner and operator of the embroidery business, Silver Threads. She was a member of the Amateur Trap Shooting Association. She held many Minnesota and Florida trap shooting titles. Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, especially shopping with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her son Ren (Susan) of Duluth, daughters Robin (Tony) McKinnon of Eagan, Minn. and Jodi (Bill) McLellan of Duluth, eight grandchildren, sisters Patricia Lowe of Proctor and Katherine (Kelly) Heegard of Twig, brother George (Jeanne) Toor of Prescott, Ariz., several nieces and nephews, and close friend Jerry Phillips of Parkton, Md.

Burial was at Oneota Cemetery.

Mardy Vatthauer
Proctor High School graduate Mardy Vatthauer of Starbuck died Fri., Aug. 15, 2003 in a Glenwood hospital. She was 60.

She was born July 1, 1943 in Duluth to Henry and Hazel (Zebott) Hagen. She worked in the guidance counseling office of Proctor High School after graduation. On July 9, 1965, she was united in marriage to Victor Vatthauer in Duluth They made their home in Duluth for four years, moved to Taylors Falls for two years, then moved to Starbuck where they have remained for the last 32 years. Despite a diagnosis of MS at an unusually young age, Mardy continued to live a full life.

Mardy was a member of the Fron Church Women's Circle and the Barsness Homemakers.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Victor Vatthauer of Starbuck, her daughter, Cynthia (Donny) Ostrander of Glenwood, four grandchildren, two brothers, a sister and several nieces and a nephew.

Burial was in the Fron Lutheran Church Cemetery.
