Swen Olson
Swen C. Olson, 86 year old resident of Little Falls, MN, died April 20, 1999, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held April 24 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls with Rev. Leroy Kremer officiating. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery.

Swen was born June 30, 1912, in Pomeroy, IA, to Gust and Ida (Gustafson) Olson. He was united in marriage to Edith Richner on February 26, 1936, in Little Falls. The couple made their home on a farm northeast of Little Falls. Swen retired from active farming in 1975. Swen enjoyed farming, fishing and deer hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Edith Olson; sons, Donald and wife Carol of Little Falls, Richard of Little Falls and Robert and wife Pat of Monticello, MN; daughters, Shirley Vnuk and husband Gene of Little Falls, Elaine Hovland and husband John of Duluth, MN, Diane Pyka and husband Ron of Spicer, MN, and Joyce Maus and husband Gilbert of Pierz,MN; 27 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Deborah; brother, Orville and sister, Viola.

Lillian E. Bachman
Lillian E. Bachman, age 94, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of St. Paul, MN, died April 22, 1999, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
Funeral services were held April 24 at the Swanville Bible Church in Swanville, MN, with Pastor Timothy Sumner officiating. Interment was in Springbrook Cemetery in Swanville.

Lillian Emily Bachman was born on April 2, 1905, in Swanville Township, Morrison County, MN, to the late Charles and Carrie (Johnson) Palm. She grew up and attended school in the Swanville area. She was united in marriage to John Bachman on July 2, 1937. They purchased a home in St. Paul in 1937. John passed away on March 26, 1978 and Lillian remained in St. Paul. In 1994, she moved to Little Falls to be near his family. Lillian and John’s greatest joy was taking their nieces and nephews on trips in Minnesota during the summer months. She was a member of the Swanville Bible Church in Swanville.

Survivors include her sisters, Hilma Ganz of Swanville and Florence Palm of Swanville; and, many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Carrie (Johnson) Palm; and brothers and sisters, Ellen Swanson, Anne Palm, Carl Palm, Esther Thelander, Emma Schuster, Albert Palm, Ida O’Dell, Hulda Koenig and Leonard Palm.

Alice Simmons
Alice Simmons, age 82, a resident of Brooklyn Center, MN, died April 22, 1999, at Coon Rapids, MN.

Funeral services were held April 26 at the Emmanuel Christian Center in Fridley, MN. Interment was at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Crystal, MN.

Alice was born May 12, 1916. She was a member of Emmanuel Christian Center, Fridley.

Survivors include husband, Dale; daughter, Alecia Simmons of Little Falls, MN; grandchildren, Curtis, Robert and Lexus Simmons of Little Falls; sisters, Hazel Lewis and Elaine Simmons; brother, Leland McConnell and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon L. and Callie and her brother, Earl.

Betty Ahlquist
Betty Jeanne (Cook) Ahlquist, age 69, a resident of Minneapolis, MN, and a graduate of Little Falls High School, died January 30, 1999, at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Survivors include her children, Jeff, Veronica Hicks (David) and Jerry (Michelle Marcott); grandchildren, Chad Hicks, Ryan Hicks and Matthew Ahlquist and her longtime companion, Herman Wendel, all of Minneapolis.
Roy Kasella
Roy Kasella, age 83, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died January 27, 1999, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held January 30 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls with Father Leroy Kremer officiating. Interment was in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Bowlus, MN.

Roy was born August 18, 1915, in Bowlus to the late Francis Kasella. He grew up in the Bowlus area where he attended school through the eighth grade. He moved to Morrill, MN, where he farmed for a number of years and then moved to Little Falls. While living in Little Falls, Roy worked at the Little Falls Theatre. He was a resident of the Pine Grove Manor in Little Falls. Roy loved to fish, cook, play bingo and take trips to the casino. Roy was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his longtime friend and fishing buddy, Terry Stellmach of Little Falls.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Francis Kasella.

Pallbearers were Maxine Bauer, Bill Moeller, Terry Stellmach, Herb Foss, Jack Kiefer and Roger Schraut.

Stanley Holtslander, Jr.
Stanley Edward Holtslander, Jr., age 49, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died January 27, 1999, at his home.

Funeral services were held January 30 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls with Rev. Richard Celley of First United Church in Little Falls officiating. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls with military rites conducted by the Little Falls American Legion Post 46.

Stanley was born August 4, 1949, in Little Falls to Stanley and Claire (Schuman) Holtslander. He grew up in the Little Falls area and attended school in Little Falls. In 1967, he began working at Hennepin Paper in Little Falls. he joined the U.S. Army on March 18, 1969, and was honorably discharged on March 17, 1971, and then served in the National Guard. He then went back to work at Hennepin Paper where he worked until its closing in January 1999. Stanley also did carpentry work for many people. He enjoyed helping others and was always doing that when not working. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and four-wheeling. He was especially fond of and enjoyed his children and grandchildren. Stanley was a member of the Little Falls American Legion Post 46.

Survivors include his father, Stanley E. Holtslander, Sr., of Little Falls; son, Chad Holtslander of Duluth, MN; daughter, Carey Holtslander and friend, Curt McDougle of Little Falls; brothers, Loyd Holtslander and wife Roxanne of Little Falls and David Holtslander and wife Brenda of Clear Lake, MN; sisters, Diane Cameron and friend John Hawkins of Little Falls, Janice Doschka and husband Lawrence of Randall, MN, Susan Holtslander of Little Falls, Debbie Kraus and husband Steve of McHenry and Robin Quick and husband Michael of McHenry, IL, and grandchildren, Bryon and Ethan Holtslander.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Claire Holtslander and granddaughter, Bethany Holtslander.

Pallbearers were Jason, Jamie and Bubba Dickmann, Kenny Wimmer, Josh and Jere Holtslander, Billy Cameron, Steve Kraus, Jr., David Virgin and Eric Lindholm.

Douglas Gish
Douglas E. Gish, age 68, a resident of Swanville, MN, died January 31, 1999, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services were held February 3 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls with Rev. Roland Jennings officiating. Interment was in Bearhead Cemetery in Pillsbury, MN.

Douglas was born August 2, 1930, in Minneapolis, MN, to the late Arthur and Minnie (Knoff) Gish. He grew up in Owatonna, MN, and Grey Eagle, MN. He was united in marriage to Nancy E. McDowell on August 1, 1953, at Grace Lutheran Church in St. Paul, MN. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Fridley, MN. Douglas worked for the Minneapolis Star Tribune for 27 years as a circulation manager. In 1978, the couple moved to rural Swanville. Douglas owned and operated Gish’s Bait & Tackle Shop in Osakis, MN. Nancy died August 24, 1989, and Douglas continued living near Swanville. Douglas also worked for the Little Falls Wal-Mart store since its opening. He became a resident of St. Otto’s Care Center January 14, 1999, where he resided at the time of his death.

Survivors include son, Jeffrey Gish and friend Andrea Carson of Swanville; non-biological children, Roy and Dawn McPherson of Anoka, MN; brother, Russell Gish and wife Carol of Grand Rapids, MI; sister, Dorothy Paulson of Riverside, CA, and grandchildren, Derek Gish of Alexandria, MN, Private Linnea Gish of Maryland and Jennifer Gish of Winona, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Minnie Gish and wife, Nancy E. (McDowell) Gish.

Delbert Stewart
Delbert T. Stewart, age 68, a resident of Monticello, MN, and formerly of Foley, MN, died January 29, 1999, at his home.

Funeral services were held February 2 at Foley Funeral Home, Foley, with Deacon Fred Reker officiating. Burial was in the St. Louis Catholic Cemetery, Foreston, MN. Military rites were provided by the Foley American Legion.

Delbert was born May 1, 1930, in Granite Ledge Township, rural Benton County, MN, to Raymond and Margaret (Duhin) Stewart. He had lived in the St. Cloud, MN, and Little Falls, MN, area and had lived in Foley before moving to Monticello 10 years ago. He was a U.S. Marine Veteran during the Korean Conflict. He had worked as a custodian.

Survivors include his sons and daughter, Delbert “Mickey” of St. Paul, MN, Sharon Bitzer of Monticello and Troy and Amy of Pine City, MN; brother, Jerry of Coon Rapids, MN, and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Raymond and brothers, George and John.

Pallbearers were Dan Stewart, Greg Stewart, Doug Stewart, Russ Stewart, Chuck Stewart and Donny Stewart.
