Donald Smith
Donald Gene Smith, age 49, a resident of Cambridge, MN, died May 9, 1999, in Cambridge.

Funeral services were held May 13 at the Onamia Vets Club with Rev. David Gouldin officiating. Interment followed at the Onamia Area Veterans Cemetery. Military honors were provided by the Onamia Vets Club.

Donald was born September 30, 1949, in Princeton, MN, to Bud and Dorothy (Jacobs) Smith. He graduated from Onamia High School in 1967. He served his country in the Air Force from 1968 to 1972 during the Vietnam War. He worked as a bartender at the Onamia Vets Club and most recently at a bar in East Bethel, MN.

Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Smith of Onamia, MN; father, Bud and wife Pearl Smith of Onamia; sisters, Rozanne and husband John Rudebeck of Coon Rapids, MN; and Brenda Meyer and husband Roger of Fort Ripley, MN; brothers, Ivan Smith and wife Carla of Brainerd, MN; Russ Smith and wife Bonnie of Onamia and Ron Smith and wife Cheryl of Fall City, WA; stepbrother, Micheal Amo and wife Carol; stepsisters, Terri Hanson and husband Scott, Charleen Roots and husband Doug, Deanna Amo and Anita Kottsick and husband Gregg; sister-in-law, Patty Smith of Woodbury, MN, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lee and Kate Smith and Gillie and Etta Jacobs; brother, Gary A. Smith and nephew, Cody Smith.

Casketbearers included Ron Nieken, Ross Kutil, Duane Tretter, Rusy Schmaltz, Buster Stott and Jeff Anderson. Honorary casketbearers included Jim Smith, Ivan Smith, John Rudebeck, Russ Smith, Ron Smith, Roger Meyer, Bill Hirsch and George Betlach.

Rosemary Maciej
Rosemary Maciej, (Mrs. Leonard), age 62, a resident of Bowlus, MN, died May 12, 1999, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 15 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN, with the Rev. Gregory Mastey officiating. Burial will be held May 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls.

Rosemary Maciej was born January 30, 1937, in Swan River Township, Morrison County, MN, to Josephine E. (Waltman) Kalis and the late Alex J. Kalis. She grew up in Morrison County and attended school in Sobieski, Our Lady of the Lourdes Elementary School in Little Falls, St. Francis High School in Little Falls and graduated from Little Falls High School with the class of 1954. After high school, Rosemary attended beauty school in Minneapolis, MN. She was united in marriage to Leonard J. Maciej on June 2, 1957, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Bowlus, where they farmed. Following her husband Leonard’s retirement in 1998 and Rosemary’s retirement in 1999, the couple continued to reside in Elmdale Township. She was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale. Rosemary enjoyed flowers, gardening, sewing, spending time at their lake home on Big Swan Lake and her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband Leonard; sons, Leonard, Jr., and wife LeAnn of Sobieski, MN, Timothy of Bowlus, and Kelly and fiancé Tonya Samler of Elmdale; daughters, Cynthia Maciej of Burtrum, MN, Eva Maciej of Elmdale, Lorie Maciej of Freedhem, MN, Lisa Knopik and husband, Galen of Maple Grove, MN; mother, Josephine E. Kalis of Little Falls; brother, Leo Kalis and wife Lorraine of Little Falls, Denis Kalis and wife Laverne of Motley; sisters, Leona Knopik and husband Alvin of Little Falls, Carol Lobin and husband Jack of White Bear Lake, MN; and 10 grandchildren.

Rosemary was preceded in death by her father, Alex J. Kalis; daughter, Theresa; son-in-law Rob Pollock in December of 1998 and a grandchild, Vernon Oldakowski, Jr.

Casketbearers were Rosemary’s grandchildren.

Brittany Marie Tretter
Brittany Marie Tretter, age nine, of Hillman, MN, died May 13, 1999, at her home in Leah Township, Morrison County, MN, following a courageous battle with cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 17 in St. John’s Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lastrup, MN, with the Rev. Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Brittany Marie Tretter was born June 26, 1989, in Little Falls, Morrison County, MN, to Adam G. and Darlene M. (Hoheisel) Tretter. She grew up in the Hillman area, attending school at the Onamia Elementary School in Onamia, MN, and presently was attending Pioneer Elementary School in Pierz, MN. She was a member of St. John’s Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lastrup, MN. Brittany loved to play softball, basketball, fish and go for walks.

Survivors include her parents, Adam and Darlene Tretter; sisters, Danielle J., Krista L. and Rebecca J. Tretter, all at home; grandparents Duane Tretter of Onamia, Lois Hoheisel and companion John Stanley, Gerald Hoheisel and wife Kathie, all of Hillman; great-grandmother Hilda Hoheisel of Lastrup; many aunts, uncles and cousins. Brittany was preceded in death by a grandmother, Joyce Tretter, on December 1, 1998.

Honorary pallbearers were Dorothy Morris, Debra Block, Debbie Brummer, Jackie and Rose Tretter and Kim Sanford.

Casketbearers were Andy Brummer, Donny Block, David, Dennis and Danny Hoheisel and Richard Tretter.

Orville E. Hagman
Orville E. Hagman, age 76, a resident of Onamia, MN, died May 14, 1999, at his home in Onamia.

Funeral services were held May 17 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Onamia with Rev. Richard Fitzer officiating.

Orville E. Hagman was born November 4, 1922, in Lyndale, MN, to the late Edward and Hannah (Dressel) Hagman. He grew up in Lyndale, and graduated from Mound High School in 1940. After completing his schooling, Orville worked for the State Game Farm in Madelia, MN. He enlisted in the United States Navy in November of 1942 and was honorably discharged in November, 1945. Orville was united in marriage to LaVanne Hammer on January 31, 1945, in Mankato, MN. The couple moved to Madelia, where Orville worked for the State Game Farm until 1957. In 1957, the couple moved to Isle, MN, where Orville was an assistant manager of the Mille Lacs Wildlife Management Area. In 1961, he was promoted to manager of the Mille Lacs Wildlife Management Area until his retirement in 1985. Orville was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Onamia and the Onamia School Board. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling, spending time with his family and attending the grandchildren’s sporting events.

Survivors include his wife LaVanne of Onamia; sons Dwight Hagman and wife Bette of Onamia, Craig Hagman and wife Judy of Onamia; daughters, Sheryl Bennett and husband Collin of Chatfield, MN, and Shiloy Baldwin and husband Clark of Grand Marais, MN; sister Gwen Cressy and husband Orville of Chaska, MN; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ann Czeck
Ann Czeck, a resident of Bowlus, MN, passed away May 13, 1999, at the Albany Area Hospital, Albany, MN.

Funeral services were held May 17 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus. Burial was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley.

Ann Czeck was born October 30, 1919, in Savanna, IL, to John and Marian (Zubalik) Sramek. She married William J. Czeck on July 17, 1943, in Elmer, MN. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus and a member of the Rosary Altar Society. She was a resident of Bowlus for 53 years where she and her husband farmed for 31 years. She was also employed at Minaco Lens and Index-53 in St. Stephen, MN, for 17 years.

Survivors include her husband William and family: Rudy and Bernice (Czeck) Gerads of Avon, MN, Elaine (Czeck) Sura of Apache Junction, AZ, Leo “Fuzzy” and Barb Czeck of Bowlus, Allan “Shorty” Czeck, Gary and RoseAnn Czeck of Bowlus, Annie Czeck and fiancé Tom Fellegy of Royalton, MN, John and Rita (Czeck) Panek of Bowlus, Mary Lou (Czeck) Nelson of Little Falls, MN, Tom Nelson of St. Cloud, MN, Bill (Snuffy) and Cheryl Czeck of Albany, MN, Philip “Greene” and Jolie Czeck of Royalton and former daughter-in-law Sandy Koecher Merrifield and husband Rich; 30 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and, brothers Frank of Duluth, MN, and Joe of Carlton, MN.

She was preceded in death by a son Richard who died in 1982, an infant brother John and son-in-law, Jim Sura.

Father Anthony J. Salzbrunn O.S.C.
Father Anthony J., Salzbrunn O.S.C., age 71, of the Crosier Fathers and Brothers Province of Shoreview, MN, died May 12, 1999.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Odilia’s Catholic Church in Shoreview on May 16. Interment was at Crosier Cemetery in Onamia, MN.

Originally from Flensburg, MN, Father Salzbrunn entered the Crosier Order in 1947, and was ordained in 1952. He served as secretary to the Vicar General, as a teacher and spiritual director at Crosier Seminary, Onamia, and in pastoral service to many parishes: Holy Family, Grand Forks, ND; St. Odilia, Shoreview, MN; St. Alphonse, Langdon, ND, St. Paul’s, Ham Lake, MN, St. Peter’s, Dumont, MN, St. Patrick’s, Collins MN, and Ave Maria, Wheaton, MN.

Philip A. Christenson
Philip A. Christenson, a resident of Eagan, MN, died May 7, 1999, at the age of 91 years.

Funeral services were held May 12 at the Eagan Evangelical Covenant Church with burial at the Hillside Cemetery.

Philip was born April 7, 1908, in St. Francis, MN. At five years of age he moved with his parents to Randall, MN, where he resided until 1941. He moved to Minneapolis where he spent the remainder of his life.

Survivors include his wife, Kay; son, Paul and granddaughter Britni; brothers Leslie and Richard of Little Falls, MN.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Linnea.

Richard Weidenbach
Richard Weidenbach, age 73, a resident of Sun City, AZ, died May 14, 1999, in Sun City.

Funeral services were held in Seattle, WA, on May 21. Burial was in the National Veterans Cemetery in Seattle.

Richard was born on January 25, 1926, to John and Antonia (Gross) Weidenbach in Little Falls, MN. He attended school in Freedhem and Little Falls. Richard entered the United States Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. Richard was united in marriage to Betty Oberton on October 19, 1949, in St. Paul, MN. They moved to Seattle and Richard worked for Boeing Aircraft until his retirement in 1989. They moved to Sun City, two years ago.

Survivors include his wife Betty; sons, Rick and wife Susan, Wayne and wife Nancy, Steve and wife Cheryl; grandchildren, Melonie, Steven, Leslie, Brent, Kris and Jamie, all of Seattle; brothers, Leo Weidenbach of Inver Grove Heights, MN, Clarence of Little Falls, Bill of Seattle; sisters, Irene Knight of Minneapolis, and Jean Miller of Nampa, ID; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, John and Antonia Weidenbach; brother Alfred Weidenbach and sisters Elvera Bahns of Pierz, MN and Marie McGouirk of East Point, GA.
