Gloria Irene Beatty
Susan (Tracy) Mahrer of Proctor is in bereavement following the death of her mother, Gloria Irene Beatty. The Cromwell resident died Sat., May 22, 2004, in Mercy Health Care Center in Moose Lake. She was 73.

She was born in Kalevala Township and graduated from Cromwell High School. On Sept. 1, 1951, she married Jim Beatty in Cromwell in a double ceremony with her brother, Elroy and his wife, Pat.

Gloria was preceded in death by a sister and an infant brother.

She is also survived by her husband Jim of Cromwell, another daughter, three brothers, and grandsons James, David and Christopher.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Thurs., in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St. in Cloquet. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow in the Fireside Room of the funeral home.

Bogdan Dicklich
Don Dicklich of Saginaw is mourning the death of his father, Bogdan 'Bob' Dicklich of Ely Lake, Minn. He died Wed., May 19, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was 82.

He was born in Chisholm, graduated from Chisholm High School in 1940, and attended Hibbing Junior College. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II at Bougainville and Guadalcanal. He worked at Arrow Shirt in Chisholm, DM&IR Railroad and 26 years for the U.S. Postal Service. He was happiest when playing in the West Range Tamburitzans Orchestra.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.

He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Arlene (Omersa) Dicklich of Ely Lake, another son, two daughters, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

Burial was in Gilbert Cemetery.

Wayne A. Luoma
Wayne A. Luoma died Sun., June 6, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center following a single vehicle accident in Carlton County on June 5. He was 29.

The Superior resident was born Sept. 5, 1974 in Duluth, Minn., and remained a resident of Duluth until moving to Superior in 2001. He was active in sports while attending Denfeld High School, graduating with the class of 1993. For two years, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior and then two years at the Lake Superior College taking classes for Civil Engineer Assistant. Following his education he was employed by S.M.&P. Utilities. For the past twelve years, he was a member of the Air National Guard 148th Fighter Wing based in Duluth. In Nov. 2003, as a Technical Sergeant, he started active duty.

Wayne is survived by his wife, the former Cami Downs, his mother Dorie Lake of Duluth, aunts Ann (Brent) Lee of Saginaw and Linda (Michael) Walker of Oliver, Wis., uncles Terry (Colleen) Tafs of Anchorage, Alaska and C.M. Sgt. Don Wilmot of Duluth, his mother and father-in-law Rob and Cindy Downs of Superior, brothers-in-law Robbie (Melissa) and Tommy Downs of Superior, great-uncles, great-aunts and cousins, special friend and neighbor Russ DeSanto and Truman of Duluth.

Funeral services are at 1 p.m. today, Thurs., in Concordia Lutheran Church, 1708 John Avenue, Superior with Rev. Henry Hanna of the United Presbyterian Church officiating. Committal prayers will be held at Oneota Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded.

Ronald Charles Davis
Services were held last week for Ronald Charles Davis. The Culver resident died very unexpectedly on May 31, 2004. He was 57.

Ron was born in Watertown S.D. At age 17, he joined the United States Navy and served for four years of the Vietnam War, as a communications officer on the USNS Valdez in Middle Eastern/Asian waters. Ron was a St. Louis County employee for 33 years, he retired from the Meadowlands Tool House one year ago.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Eunice Davis; aunts, Sylvie Larrila and Darlene Harley; sister, Ruby Abdo; and granddaughter, Valerie Homme.

Ron is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 29 years, Kit (Katherine Wedel); his children, Tess (David) Settergren, Kelly (Ed) Lermon, Kevin (Dawn) Holte, Eric (Amy) Holte, Stephanie (Troy) Graves, Sean (Mary) Holte, Elyse (Sue VanRiper) Holte, and Jason (Amy) Davis; and 16 grandchildren; sister Joy (Jack) Danielson; brothers, Rick (Char) and Kenny Davis.

Military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Trish Olson
Services were held earlier this week for Trish Olson of Parchem Group Home in Cloquet. She died Fri., June 11, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center. She was 38.

She was preceded in death by her father Roy W. Tuomi, maternal grandmother Irene Johnson, paternal grandfather Roy F. Tuomi, and uncle Walter Johnson.

Trish is survived by her mother Susan Tuomi (Johnson) formerly of Proctor, brother Roy D. Tuomi of Scandia, grandmother Elma Tuomi of Proctor, cousins and many close friends and co-workers.

Fr. James Bissonette officiated at the service.

Morrie C. Lind
Morrie C. Lind, who was born in Alborn, died Thurs., June 10, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. He was 80.

Morrie was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex (CV-9). He had retired from U.S. Steel after 34 years of service and later retired from the City of Duluth after 15 years. Morrie was a member of the former Good Shepherd Catholic Church, and was a Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 68. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, V.F.W. Post 137, West Duluth American Legion Post 71, longtime president and coach of the Irving Hockey Assn. and the Minnesota Deer Hunters Assn. He was former City Champion and feared cribbage player for Mr. D's and the North Pole Bar.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ellsworth and sisters Dorothy, Laura and Jenny.

Morrie is survived by his wife Helen, daughter N. Suzanne Lind (Jim) Reijo of Duluth, sons David (Gail) of Prior Lake, Mark (Martha), Christopher M. (Christie) and Paul (Charlene), all of Duluth, brothers Fred and Curtis (Darlene), both of Saginaw, 11 grandchildren, many special nieces and nephews and close neighbors and friends.

Burial at Oneota Cemetery.

Shirley Ruth Kindgren
Phillip (Melissa) Kindgren is mourning the death of his mother, Shirley Ruth Kindgren. She died Sat., June 12, 2004, at Interfaith Care Center in Carlton. She was 82.

She was born June 22, 1921, in Duluth, the daughter of Elizabeth (Young) and William Flatt. She grew up and attended schools in Duluth, graduating from Duluth Central High School. Shirley was employed as a secretary in Washington, DC, and at the Duluth Board of Trade Building.

She is preceded in death by her parents and five brothers.

Shirley is also survived by another son Keith (Kathy) Kindgren of Cloquet, daughter Debra Asch of Stillwater, nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and sisters-in-law Louise and Betty Flatt.

Burial will be at Park Hill Cemetery.

Marvin D. (Honkala) Gunnarson
Dory Nelson, Ila 'Sis' (Jack) Meismer and June Renaud of Proctor are saddened by the death of their brother, step-brother Marvin D. (Honkala) Gunnarson. The Cloquet resident, died Thurs., June 10, 2004, in Rochester. He was 69.

He was born in Brookston, to Alfred and Martha (Glader) Honkala and later adopted by Byron and Ila Gunnarson in Proctor. He graduated from Hermantown High School in 1952 and attended Wabash College in Indiana. Marv was a barber in Duluth and later worked for the American Automobile Association and American Family Ins. He was united in marriage to Charlene Nylander on March 15, 1958 in Duluth. They resided in Duluth from 1958 to 1972, in Pengilly, from 1972 to 1975, in Willmar, from 1975 to 1996, and then to Cloquet in 1996. He was a member of the Cloquet/Carlton County Area Chamber of Commerce and had served on the board of directors and was awarded the Chamber Volunteer of the Year in 2000; the Carlton County United Way Board of Directors; Past President of the Kiwanis Club; Zion Lutheran Church and was serving on the church council; and Cloquet Senior Center Board of Directors; and many other civic organizations. Marv was very active with the many Masonic affiliations including: current Master of Dalles Masonic Lodge 181 of Cloquet; past member of Ionic Masonic Lodge 186 of Duluth; past member of Sharon Masonic Lodge 104 in Willmar; Past President of the Viking Shrine Club in Cloquet; Past President of the Willmar Shrine Club where he started the first Shrine Circus in that community; the Scottish Rite Bodies in Duluth; AAD Temple Shrine in Duluth; and the Royal Order of Jesters Duluth Court # 55.

Marv is preceded in death by his parents, his step-parents, brothers Maynard and Delbert Honkala and Lowell and Richard Gunnarson, a step-brother Byron Gunnarson Jr. and a step-sister Margaret Trupukka.

He is also survived by his wife of 46 years Charlene, a son, four daughters, two brothers, four other sisters, nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment at Park Hill Cemetery in Duluth.

Robert Peter Murray
Robert Peter Murray, who was a 1980 graduate of Proctor High School, passed away Fri., June 11, 2004. He was 41.

He was born in Duluth on July 16, 1962. Robert was an Army veteran and had worked as a self-employed painter and carpenter.

He was preceded in death by his father Albert Murray, Jr. and nephew Tyler.

Robert is survived by his mother Irene Bester of Duluth, brothers James Murray of Virginia, Michael (Bonnie) Murray of Duluth and several nieces and nephews.

Grace Petersen-Brightwell
Grace Petersen-Brightwell, who grew up in Twig, and graduated from Proctor High School in 1961 passed away Dec. 22, 2003 in Scottsdale, Ariz. She was 60.

Grace was born in Duluth, to Orville and Ruth Petersen. While in high school she was involved in playing piano, Youth For Christ, marching band and student government. Upon completion of high school Grace attended Northwest-ern Bible College in Minneapolis and studied Music Education as well as Applied Voice and Piano. Grace later moved to Colorado where she raised her three children. She married Ronald Brightwell. After her kids were grown, Grace moved to Nevada and then to Arizona to be closer to her family.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

She is survived by two sons Peter Flanders, John (Kimberly) Flanders, a daughter Elizabeth (David) Simms, five grandchildren, a sister Stephanie (Ken Carlson) Petersen, two nieces and two great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sat., June 19 at Twig New Life Covenant Church, 6902 Industrial Road, Twig.
