Russell Smith, 81, of St. James died Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Trimont Health Care Center in Trimont.
Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Sturm Funeral Home in St. James, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, St. James.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. There will be a Christian Mothers Rosary at 5 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Russell is survived by his wife, Jean; a son, Tom Smith of Oklee; a daughter, Linda Voss of Slayton; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Dean Hoffman of St. James, MN; and one sister, Lorraine Podraza of Illinois.
He was born on July 20, 1921 to Ernest Clark and Florence (Rendall) Smith in Blue Earth. He served in the U.S. Army from October 1942 to November 1945.

Donald Konz - Memorial Services for Donald Konz, 45, of Welcome, and formerly of Sleepy Eye, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with Father Brian Oestreich as Celebrant. Burial will be in St Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye.
Donald died on Friday morning, Nov. 1, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital in Sleepy Eye. Visitation with the family will be from 9 - 11 a.m. Tuesday at St Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Services were entrusted to the Care of the Kramer Family Funeral Home in Welcome.
Donald Raymond Konz was born Oct. 9, 1957, to George and Mary (Gaspar) Konz in Sleepy Eye. He received his education in Sleepy Eye, where he lived for many years until moving to Welcome. Don was employed as a welder for eight years. He later became a Union Carpenter for 1832 until the time of his death. Don greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time.
Donald is survived by his son Travis Konz of Bingham Lake; mother Mary Konz of Sleepy Eye; brothers, John Konz and his wife Alyce of New Ulm, Leo Konz of St. Paul, Vincent Konz and his wife Sandy, Steven Konz and his wife Denise, Mark Konz and his wife Donna, Ronald Konz and his wife Ann, all of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Karen Sieve and her husband Dennis of Richfield, Bernice Bolander and her husband Reed of Lakeville, Phyllis Augustin and her husband Kevin of Sleepy Eye, Marie Mellum and her husband Bob of New London, Sue Warvin and her husband David of Owatonna, Joan Rasmussen and her friend, Bill Arndt of Mankato, and Pamela Konz of Sleepy Eye; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and Friends.
Donald was preceded in death by his father George Konz; his sister, Teresa Konz; and other relatives.

Ted Manderfeld, 83, of 1021 North Garden Street, #105, of New Ulm died on Sunday, November 3, 2002 at his home after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery, Soldiers Rest Section. Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm Veterans Organizations.
Visitation will be 3 - 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a combined rosary and prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Ted is survived by his wife, Marcie, of New Ulm, daughters, Kay Lytle of Bloomington, Nancy Manderfeld of Eden Prairie, step-daughter, Cindy Borth of New Ulm; grandchildren, Stephanie Bakke and her husband, Dan, of Brooklyn Park, Angela Watschke and her husband, Michael, of Eagan; three great grandchildren, Samuel and Benjamin Bakke and Grace Watschke; brothers and sisters-in-law, Stan Manderfeld and his wife, Fran of New Ulm, Ray Manderfeld and his wife Dorothy, of New Ulm; and sister, Lorraine Williams of Mankato. He is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, T.W. and Clara Manderfeld; his first wife, Lorraine, brother, Jerome "Jack" Manderfeld and his wife, Neva, of Vancouver, WA; sister Adeline Werner and her husband, Lloyd, of New Ulm; brother-in-law Roger Williams of Mankato; and niece, Judy Klooster of Mankato.
Ted was born on November 25, 1918 in New Ulm to T.W. and Clara (Dorn) Manderfeld. He graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1937. He was a veteran of WWII, serving from 1941 - 1945. Ted served in the Brown County Treasurer's Office for 34 years, seven as the Deputy to Albert L. Gag and the remainder as elected Brown County Treasurer. He retired in 1980. He served as president of the Minnesota State Association of County Treasurers in 1958 and was voted Minnesota County Treasurer of the year in 1980.
Ted served on the New Ulm Police Commission for seven years. He was a member of the Albert Nagel Post 1648 VFW, the Seifert-Bianchi Post 132 American Legion, the St. John's Court of the Catholic Order of Foresters, the St. Patrick's Council of the Knights of Columbus, the Junior Pioneers, the New Ulm Country Club, and Turner Hall all in New Ulm. He was a member of the Veterans Funeral Detail, a ten year volunteer for the Brown County Transportation Program, a fifty year member of the American Legion Drill Team, and a lifetime member of the Cathedral Parish.
Ted was an excellent athlete and an avid sports fan. He was inducted into the New Ulm American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame and the New Ulm Bowling Association Hall of Fame.

Roland 'Buddy' Panning, 74, of rural Gibbon, died Saturday, November 2, 2002 at the Fairfax Community Home in Fairfax.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Moltke Township, Sibley County with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in Gibbon and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Wednesday.
Roland is survived by his wife, Dorothy Panning of rural Gibbon; daughters and sons-in-law, Kris and Don Metzler of Golden Valley, Janet and Joel Renner of Victoria, Rachel and Scott Bartz of Belle Plaine; sons and daughter-in-law, Dave and Barb Panning of Gibbon, Merle Panning of rural Gibbon; ten grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Clarice and Don Fastenau, Norma Luetke of Onalaska, Wisconsin; brothers and sister-in-law, Armin and Virginia Panning of Port Washington, Wisconsin, Frederick and Doris Panning of St. Paul Park; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, David Luetke.
He was born on June 23, 1928, in New Ulm to William and Frieda (Bode) Panning. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1953 and was stationed in Germany. On June 13, 1954 he married Dorothy Wohlrabe at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fairmont. After marriage they farmed in Moltke Township, Sibley County. He was a life-long member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and served on many church boards and sang in the choir. He also served on the board of the Tri-County Co-op and was a life-long member of the Lutheran Layman's League.

Diane Gieseke, 56, of 329 Hazelwood Avenue in New Ulm, died Sunday, November 3, 2002, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Wednesday and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. The St. Anne's Court of the National Catholic Society of Foresters will pray the rosary at 6 pm., and there will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. both Wednesday at the funeral home.
Diane is survived by her husband, Darwin Gieseke of New Ulm; a daughter, Aundrea Gieseke and her special friend Ryan Neuman, both of New Ulm; a son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Stephanie Gieseke of Champlin; a grandson, Logan Gieseke of Champlin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Cyrilla Portner and Carol Ludewig, both of New Ulm, Lavon and Roland Bode of Walker, and Mercedes and Bob Pelzel of Sleepy Eye; brothers and sisters-in-law, Matthew and Coletta Gulden, Milton Gulden, Leander Jr. and Sandy Gulden, and Ken and Marcy Gulden, all of New Ulm; sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law, Marilyn and Dave Leonard of Maple Grove and Marvin and Mary Gieseke of New Ulm; and by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary Gulden; and by brothers-in-law, Marvin Portner and Daniel Ludewig.
Diane was born in New Ulm to Leander and Bernice (Ernsterof) Gulden on January 23, 1946. She attended Holy Trinity Grade School and was a 1963 graduate of Cathedral High School. After graduation she worked for New Ulm Telephone Company. Diane was united in marriage with Darwin Gieseke on October 4, 1969, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. After marriage she worked as a homemaker. In 1988 she went to work for Photo Express in New Ulm which she later purchased and owned until 1998. She then worked at Hallmark in New Ulm until her illness in January 2002. Diane was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm where she taught CCD and helped with parish picnics. She also volunteered with the New Ulm Figure Skating and the New Ulm Junior Baseball Organizations.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to the American Cancer Society.

Helen Pehrson, 81, of Lafayette, died Saturday evening, November 2, 2002, at the St. Peter Community Health Care Center.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wed-nesday at First Lutheran Church in Lafayette. Burial with full military honors conducted by American Legion Post 300 of Lafayette will follow at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm and one hour prior to services at the church.
Survivors include her daughter, Emma Woods and her husband Randy of Winthrop; sons, Alan Pehrson of Lafayette, Neal Pehrson and his wife Debra of New Ulm, Dean Pehrson and his wife Jo of Lafayette; seven grandchildren, Shelly Redmond, Amy Staupe, Stephanie Mox, Katie, Beth, Heidi, and Lindsay Pehrson; five great grandchildren, Grace Redmond, Turner Staupe, Jacob, Joshua, and Cassandra Mox; brother, Donald Larson of Rochester; sisters-in-law, Gladys Larson of Gaylord, Ruby Larson of Worthington; brother-in-law, Edmund Allerson of Lafayette; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Clayton, Einar, Winton, and Kermit Larson; and four sisters, Hazel Bjorklund, Anna Bjorklund, Vivian Johnson, and Irelene Allerson.
Helen Delores Larson, the daughter of Jens and Emma (Webster) Larson, was born May 10, 1921, in New Sweden Township, Nicollet County. She spent her youth on the family farm and attended country school. After graduating from St. Peter High School, she attended Mankato Teachers College for three years. She enlisted in the United States Army in December 1942, serving in the European Theatre during World War II. After her honorable discharge in December 1945, she returned to the family farm in Nicollet County. She married Harry Pehrson on September 24, 1947, at Scandian Grove Lutheran Church. They made their home in Lafayette. Following her husband's death in 1967, Helen worked at various jobs, most recently at Citizens Bank in Lafayette. She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Lafayette, the church Ladies Aid, and the Lafayette American Legion Auxiliary.

Arne Petersen, 86, of Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, November 3, 2002, at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm, where he had lived since June of 1998,
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sleepy Eye, with Pastor Ron Freimark officiating. Interment will be in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye, with military rites by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and on Wednesday, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Arne is survived by his wife, Elaine of Sleepy Eye; children, Gary and wife Alice Petersen of St. Paul, Ron and wife Bev Petersen of Sleepy Eye, Janet and husband Marty Novotny of Willmar; grandchildren, Alicia and husband Chris Runquist, Brian Petersen, Steven, Katie, Dan and Mike Petersen, Peter, Jenny and Andy Novotny; brother, Karl and wife Anna of Hjorring, Denmark and sister-in-law, Agnes Miller of Sleepy Eye. He was preceded in death by his parents, three siblings in infancy (twin Niels, Else and Clifford) and brother-in-law, Art E. Miller.
Arne was born on July 22, 1916, in Clare, Iowa to August and Karoline (Jensen) Petersen. Arne moved with his family to a farm near Evan in 1923. He grew up and attended country school District 58 in Evan. After completing his schooling, he famed on the family farm until entering the U.S. Army during WWII. He served in England and France from July of 1942 until December of 1945. Arne married Elaine Mikaelsen on March 23, 1946. Following their marriage they made their home on the family farm east of Evan where they lived and farmed until retiring in 1990 when they moved to Sleepy Eye. Arne was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye since 1996 and a former member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Evan. He was a past member of the Sleepy Eye Golf Club and the Morgan VFW and a present member of Sleepy Eye VFW Post 800 and American Legion Post 7. Arne enjoyed fishing and vacationing at Lake Amelia, winters at the Dana Court in Arizona, golfing and most of all his family and grandchildren.

Ruth M. Barnum, 82, of Redwood Falls, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at Sunwood Good Samaritan Center in Redwood Falls.
Services are 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 8, at the Echo Alliance Church in Echo with burial in Redwood Falls Cemetery.
Visitation is 5-8 p.m., Thursday, at Nelson-Martin Funeral Home in Redwood Falls and one hour prior to the church service.
She is survived by son Dan of Wabasso; daughter Deanne Gillock and husband Gene of Portland, Ore.; three grandchildren; and sister Ethel Johnson of Monticello.
She was born on July 27, 1920, in Minneapolis, to Theodore and Anna (Swenson) Anderson.

Minnie Knisley, 87, of Redwood Falls, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at Sunwood Good Samaritan Care Center in Redwood Falls.
Services are 9:30 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 7, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls.
Visitation is 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, with a prayer service at 6 p.m. at Nelson-Martin Funeral Home in Redwood Falls and will continue one hour before services Thursday at the church.
She is survived by brother Basilius Quast of Watkins, Minn.
She was born on March 11, 1915, in Watkins to Joseph and Bertha (Otto) Quast.

Mae Virginia Luepke, 80, of New Ulm, and formerly of rural Courtland, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm. Visitation will be 3 - 9 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 until 8:30 a.m. on Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm, and will continue for one hour prior to the time of service at the church on Friday.
Mae is survived by her daughter Linda Wellmann of New Ulm and her special friend, David Stolt of St. Peter; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Donna Luepke, and John and Lorna Luepke, all of rural Courtland; grandchildren, Tammy Retzlaff, Leon Luepke and his special friend, Mary Lorenzen, Darren Luepke, Scott Luepke, David Luepke, and Kristen Luepke; great-grandchildren, Skye Retzlaff, Alex Retzlaff, and RaeAnn Retzlaff; sister, Vivian Nyman of Delavan, Wis.; brother and sister-in-law Wallace and Delores Johnson of New Ulm; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Leonard and Violet Hansen of Morgan, Sydney and Lucille Johnson of Kensington, sister-in-law Leone Klossner of New Ulm; and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Melvin Luepke on Sept. 11, 1999; brothers, Arthur Axelson and Carl Johnson; sister, Anna Johnson; and by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Oscar Johnson, Sven Nyman, Carl and Lorine Wiese, and Wilbert Luepke.
Mae was born on May 24, 1922, in West Newton Township, Nicollet County, to Victor and Emma (Olson) Johnson. She was united in marriage to Melvin Luepke on June 12, 1943, at the Clear Lake Lutheran Church, rural Gibbon. After marriage they farmed in Courtland Township, Nicollet County, until 1987, when they retired and moved to New Ulm. On Nov. 27, 1998, they became residents of Ridgeway on German in New Ulm. On July 3, 2001, Mae became a resident of the Oak Hills Living Center. She was a member of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm, since marriage and was a member of a local sewing club for more than 50 years. The family prefers memorials to the St. Paul's Parish Center or to the donor's choice.

Herbert 'Herb' Maidl, 76, of 451 Main Avenue in Lafayette died Tuesday, November 5, 2002, at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at the St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Lafayette with burial in St. Gregory's Catholic Cemetery in Lafayette.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the time of mass at church on Friday. There will be a parish prayer service at 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Herb is survived by his wife, Edna Maidl of Lafayette; daughters and son-in-law, Mary Reedstrom of North Mankato, and
Carolyn and Jeff Renard of Forest Lake; a son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Diane Maidl of rural Lafayette; grandchildren,
Ben Maidl, Tom Maidl and Jennifer Renard; a sister, Delores Preisinger of New Ulm; brothers and sister-in-law, Clarence and Betty Maidl and Leo Maidl, all of Lafayette; sister-in-law, DeLila Maidl of New Ulm; and by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Florence Swenson and Hilda Maidl; brothers, Victor and Harold Maidl; and by brothers-in-law, Henry Preisinger and Albert Swenson.
Herb was born November 13, 1925, in Lafayette Township, Nicollet County, to Joseph and Bertha (Schaeffler) Maidl. He attended country school District 56 in Sibley County. He did custom farm work from 1947 - 1964. He married Edna Hacker Schaeffler on April 23, 1962, at the St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Lafayette. After marriage they purchased a farm in Lafayette Township, Nicollet County, and continued to farm there until they retired in 1989. After retirement they moved to Lafayette. Herb was a member of the St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Lafayette, the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Harold Shedd, 87, of Lamberton, formerly of Westbrook, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at Valley View Nursing Home in Lamberton.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Westbrook Funeral Home with burial in Westbrook Cemetery.
Visitation is 9-10:30 a.m. today at the funeral home.
He was born April 4, 1915, in Amherst Township, Cherokee County, Iowa to A.L. Shedd and Emma Pendleton.

Marjorie H. Cowell, 81, of Gaylord, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at Sibley Medical Center, Arlington.
There are no services planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Girl Scouts of America.
Arrangements are with Egesdal Funeral Home, Gaylord.
She is survived by her husband, Lyndon R. Cowell of Gaylord; a son, Bill Cowell of Gaylord and a daughter, Sally B. Cowell of Lakeville; and four grandchildren.
She was born July 14, 1921, in St. Paul to Henry and Isabel (Hall) Heidbrink.

Lance Cowell, 16, of St. James, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, in Jackson County.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at First Presbyterian Church in St. James, with burial at Mount Hope Cemetery in St. James. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Friday and 7:30 - 9 a.m. at the Sturm Funeral Home in St. James, and will continue one hour prior to service at the church on Saturday.
He is survived by his parents Bradley and Mary Jo; sisters, Tricia and Tracy Cowell; brothers, Land and Shae Cowell; and grandmother, Alice Cowell of Butterfield.
Lance Bradley Cowell was born April 17, 1986, in St. James, to Bradley and Mary Jo (Melheim) Cowell.

Tim Nachreiner, 47, of rural Fairfax, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at his home due to a heart attack.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax, with burial in the church cemetery in Cairo Township, Renville County.
Visitation will be 3:30 - 8:30 p.m. Sunday and 8-11 a.m. Monday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Fairfax. Arrangements are with the Hauser-Hantge Funeral Chapel in Fairfax.

Arvid Jones, 83, of Sleepy Eye, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Care Center.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, with burial at the Home Cemetery, with military rites by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 3 - 5 p.m. Sunday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce of Sleepy Eye; daughters, Deanne Weisser of Mobile, Ala., Sherri Spaeth of Tacoma, Wash., Linda Tangen of Bloomington, and Connie Kusche of Golden Valley; and nine grandchildren.
Arvid H. Jones was born Dec. 11, 1918, in Sleepy Eye, to Thomas and Effie (Jones) Jones. He enlisted in the Army Signal Corps in 1941, and served in China during World War II. He attained the rank of captain and served in the Army for 28 years.

Estella Wareberg, 91, of Redwood Falls, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at the Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls.
Memorial services are 2:30 p.m., Monday, No. 11, at Gloria Del Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls with private family committal service at the Lakeview Cemetery in Polson, Mont., in Spring, 2003.
Nelson-Martin Funeral Service of Redwood Falls handled arrangements.
