Delbert Young
Dec. 21, 1916 ­ Jan. 13, 2001

MONROE CITY ­ Delbert Young, 84, of Monroe City, died at 5:40 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at the home of his daughter in Monroe City.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at the Monroe City United Methodist Church. The Rev. Peggy Jeffries will officiate. Burial will be at the St. Jude Cemetery in Monroe City.

Visitiation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at the Garner Funeral Home in Monroe City and Tuesday until the time of the services at the church.

Mr. Young was born Dec. 21, 1916, in Ralls County to Edgar Lee and Nora LeFever Young.

He married Elna C. Thomas on May 21, 1938, in Ralls County. She preceded him in death Aug. 6, 1991.

Survivors include two sons, David Young of Emden and James E. Young of Monroe City; five daughters, Doris Taylor of Hannibal, Wanda Swearngin of Lawrence, Kan., Linda Willard of Monroe City, Joan Koenig of Enterprise, Ala., and Elna Carrick of Shelbina; 26 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Elsie Leake of Monroe City, Leona McNeil of Palmyra and Cornelia Yager of Sequim, Wash.

He was preceded in death by one son, John Delbert Young; one daughter, Velena M. Dye; three brothers, Robert Young, Lewis Young and Charles Young; and five sisters, Faye Johnston, Zelma D. Benoist, Geraldine Johannes, Bernadine Eckhardt and Margie Davis.

Mr. Young was a member of the Monroe City United Methodist Church. He was a farmer and stockman in Marion County. He also worked 23 years for Kulman Diecasting in Monroe City until his retirement in 1979.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Memorials may be made to the Monroe City United Methodist Church's building fund.

Pallbearers will be Tom Swearngin, John Taylor, Richard Willard, Mark Gamble, Rusty Young and Matthew Koenig.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mr. Young's grandchildren, Ron Gamble, Scott Gamble, Jason Willard, Richie Carrick, Michael Carrick, Jonathan Carrick, James Taylor, Jesse Young, Anthony Young, Andrew Young, Nathan Young, Corey Young, Jim Koenig and Dana Koenig.

Charles Roscoe (Bob) Smoot

PALMYRA ­ Charles Roscoe (Bob) Smoot, 73, of Palmyra, died at 9:50 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, at the Beth-Haven Nursing Home in Hannibal.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra with military rites by the Boots-Dickson American Legion Post 174.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services on Saturday.

William (Bill) Tillitt
June 17, 1911 ­ Jan. 20, 2001

HANNIBAL ­ William (Bill) Finley Tillitt, 89, of Hannibal, died at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at the University Hospital and Clinics in Columbia.

Funeral services for Mr. Tillitt will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at the Fifth Street Baptist Church. The Revs. Gary Douglas and Thomas W. Sneed will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel.

Mr. Tillitt was born June 17, 1911, in Philadelphia, Mo., to Finley and May Mallory Tillitt. He was married to Virginia Clark Canote on Jan. 27, 1946, in Hannibal. She survives.

Other survivors include one sister, Mary Louise Shriver, Aurora, Colo.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lura McCalman and Lillian Tillitt.

Mr. Tillitt was assistant manager for Long Bell Lumber Company, later International Paper Company, in Hannibal for 28 years. He was a member of Fifth Street Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He served in the medical department of the U.S. Army, attached to the 203rd General Hospital, for three years. He was a member and the oldest living past master of St. John's Lodge No. 28, AF&AM.

He was a 50-year member of Hannibal Chapter No. 7, RAM, and a 50-year member and past patron of Crown and Scepter Chapter No. 1, OES. He was a member of the Lighthouse Chapter No. 194, OES. Mr. Tillitt was an avid sports fan. He was a 50-year member and past president of the Hannibal High School Booster Club. He served on the board of Camp Oki-Tipi and was board treasurer for a number of years. Mr. Tillitt enjoyed children and served as Santa Claus for 40 years.

The family wishes to include that he is survived by his sister-in-law and her husband, Tim and Louise Timbrook, Hannibal; one sister-in-law Betty Geronsin, Fenton, Iowa; two nieces, Jovanna Timbrook, Hannibal, and Letty May Shriver Dunahay, Aurora, Colo., and Linda Timbrook, wife of his late nephew Kenny Timbrook.

Memorials may be made to the Fifth Street Baptist Church, the Baptist Home or the Missouri Baptist Children's Home.

Pallbearers will be Jim Baxter, Francis Wells, Richard Kramer, Larry Brumbaugh, Dale Sinclair and Rocky Allen. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. E.A. Porter, Earl Davis and Larry Taylor.

Gladys Bryan
Oct. 12, 1914 - Jan. 19, 2001

PARIS ­ Gladys Bryan, 86, of Paris, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Monroe Manor Nursing Home in Paris.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at Agnew Funeral Home in Paris. The Rev. Charles Barr will officiate. Burial will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bryan was born Oct. 12, 1914, in Monroe County to Dennis and Mallie Powers Young.

She was married to Glenn Bryan on April 10, 1937, in Paris. He preceded her in death March 17, 1984.

Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Snell of Mexico; one son, Donald Bryan of Paris; six grandsons, Don Bryan Jr., Jeff Snell, Mike Snell, Andy Bryan, Cory Bryan and Jody Bryan; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Bruce; one brother, Barker Young; and one sister, Velma Long.

Mrs. Bryan attended Northeast Missouri State University, now known as Truman University, and taught school in the Cedar Bluff School District. She was a homemaker and lived all her life in Monroe County. She was a member of the First Christian Church where she was very active until her illness. She had been a Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Christian Women's Fellowship where she prepared and gave many devotionals. She helped with bereavement meals and was an elder. She enjoyed Bible study, geography and traveling throughout Missouri and other states.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or the American Heart Association.

Marianna Foster Lewis

HANNIBAL ­ Marianna Foster Lewis, 74, of Hannibal, died at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2001 at Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Park United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jan Bond will officiate. Burial will be at Park Lawn Cemetery in Barry, Ill.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home and Chapel.

Memorials may be made to The American Heart Association, The American Cancer Society or the charity or organization of the donor's choice.

Henry H. Lucas
May 11, 1911 - Jan. 15, 2001

HANNIBAL ­ Henry H. Lucas, 89, of Emden and formerly of Hannibal, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Monroe City Manor in Monroe City.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. The Rev. Glen Yoder and Major Elsine Rowan will officiate. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hannibal.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Lucas was born May 11, 1911, in Hannibal to Gus and Elizabeth Mullinix Lucas.

He was married to Sylvia May Dodd on Dec. 2, 1931, in Hannibal. She survives.

Other survivors include four sons, Eugene R. Lucas of Hunnewell, Frank Lucas of Emden, Ronald Lucas of Emerson and Bennie Lucas of Hannibal; three daughters, Bertha Sampsel, Margaret Dennis and Ann Lucas, all of Davenport, Iowa; one granddaughter whom they raised, Charlotte Hawkins of Warren; two sisters, Maxine Dixon of Philadelphia and Mary Patrick of Hannibal; 36 grandchildren, 80 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, John Henry Lucas; one daughter, Betty Ann Ronimous; five sisters, three brothers, five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Lucas was self-employed and had retired from the Palmyra Sales Barn. He attended the Salvation Army in his childhood.

Pallbearers will be Terry Honeycutt, Travis Dennis, Frank Lucas II, Ronald Charles Lucas, Danny Lucas and Arthur Honeycutt.

Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Lucas, David Lucas, Darek Lucas, Mike Calvert, Kris Lucas, Albert Honeycutt, Bob Hughes and Roger Rhoades.

James E. Craven
Feb. 5, 1936 - Jan. 15, 2001

HANNIBAL ­ James E. Craven, 64, of Hannibal, died at 1:36 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. The Rev. Jack Emmite will officiate. Burial will be at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, at the funeral home.

Mr. Craven was born Feb. 5, 1936, in Hannibal to John and Opal Williams Craven.

He was married to Carolyn F. Chaney on Oct. 23, 1965, in Hannibal. She survives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Marjorie Guthrie and Lois Guthrie.

Mr. Craven was retired. He had formerly worked for Mitchell Disposal Service, Wamsley Disposal Service and Campbell Disposal Service.

Pallbearers will be Darrell Thomure, Darren Thomure, Walter Thomure, Keith Majors, Jim O'Donnell and Jim Roberts.

Rev. Eugene D. Kelly

ST. LOUIS ­ The Rev. Eugene D. Kelly, S.J., died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001.

A Mass will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at St. Francis Xavier (College Church) in St. Louis. Burial will be at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church in St. Louis, prior to the service.

Kriegshauser South Mortuary in St. Louis is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include one sister, Daniella Juett Kendrick of Quincy, Ill.

The family wishes to include that he was preceded in death by one niece, Mary Margaret James Conboy, formerly of Hannibal.

Memorials may be made to the Jesuits of the Missouri Province, 4511 West Pine, St. Louis, Mo. 63108.

Betty Mae Atkinson
Dec. 23, 1893 ­ Jan. 14, 2001

HANNIBAL ­ Betty Mae Atkinson, 107, of Palmyra, died at 6:35 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at the James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal. The Rev. Douglas Darnold will officiate. Burial will be at the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hannibal.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Atkinson was born Dec. 23, 1893, in Staunton, Va., to Otis S. and Annie B. Fix Knopp.

She was married to William James Atkinson Sept. 2, 1950, in Mississippi County, Ark. He preceded her in death May 4, 1960.

Survivors include two nieces, Joyce A. Blackford of Lebanon, N.J., and Laura J. Robinson of Hannibal; and three nephews, Roger Knopp of the state of Oklahoma, William M. Knopp of Hannibal and John V. Knopp of the state of Washington.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

She retired as a bookkeeper and accountant. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hannibal. She enjoyed gardening and sewing.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.

Elmer Homer Long
Feb. 10, 1920 ­ Dec. 31, 2000

KEOKUK, Iowa ­ Elmer Homer Long, 80, of Keokuk, Iowa, and formerly of Perry, died at 2 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, at his home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk. The Rev. Craig Burton will officiate. Burial will be at Keokuk National Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will meet with friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Mr. Long was born Feb. 10, 1920, in Stoutsville to Harry and Mary Beatrice Keyes Long.

He was married to Lola Mae Walkup in Denver on June 8, 1947. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Dr. Lowell K. Long of Keokuk and Robert K. Long of Des Moines, Iowa; two daughters, Mary Sue Campbell of Vandalia and Dr. Audrey AuChin Butler of Iowa City, Iowa (who lived with the Longs as a high school student); six grandchildren, Brian Long, Mark Long, Derek Long, Chris Campbell, Greg Campbell and Jennifer Campbell; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and two sisters, Beulah McCreery of Eldon and Virgie Redman of Monroe City.

He was preceded in death by one son, Gary Long, who died in infancy; two sisters, Hazel Every and Ethel Dean; and one brother, Carl Long.

Mr. Long was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the Fourth General Hospital from 1941 to 1945. He served in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines.

After the war, Mr. Long graduated from Denver University. He returned to Missouri in 1950 and taught at Perry, where he coached all the boys and girls sports. He earned a master's degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia.

In 1956 he moved to Keokuk, where he taught at Keokuk Middle School until 1982.

He was a member of Bel Air Baptist Church. He had been active in church, school, civic and sports activities.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
