ETHLYN TUCKER

Ethlyn Tucker, 78, Independence, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Tucker was born Nov. 17, 1919, in Cowgill, Mo. She was a stock records clerk for Montgomery Ward before she retired. She was a member of the Sugar Creek Church of Christ.

Her survivors include three daughters, Betty Perry, Marilyn Cox and Beverly Burks, all of Independence; 15 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Pitts Funeral Home, Braymer, Mo. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery, Braymer. There will be no visitation, but friends may call until the service time.

May Langford

May Langford, 74, Independence, died Wednesday, February 10, 2000, in Lee's Summit.

Mrs. Langford was born Nov. 19, 1925, in Ottawa, Kan., and moved to Independence in 1945.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Leonard Langford, in March 1999.

Survivors include two sons, Paul A. Langford and Robert W. Langford, both of Independence; and two grandchildren, Steve and Pamala.

Services will be at 8 p.m., Monday, at New Salem Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the services.

Donald E. Manuel

Donald E. Manuel, 75, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2000, at Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Manuel was born Feb. 26, 1924, in Hunter, Okla. He served as a pilot in WWII. In 1950 he received his MBA from the University of California at Berkeley. He remained in the Bay area for 49 years where he was a financial analyst and investment banker.

He was elected to the local school board and served for 14 years. He served on the Board of Trustees of Graceland College for more than 20 years. He taught insurance and finance courses at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics in Shanghai, China, as a guest professor.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jean Lane Manuel, of the home; sons, Charles Manuel, Lamoni, Iowa, Stven Manuel, Redmond, Wash., Scott Manuel, Blue Springs; daughters, Shannon Yerrington, San Antonio, Texas, and Jennifer Mickelsen, Alexandria, Va.; brother Ronald Manual, Independence; niece Margaret McDowell, Independence; nephew Evan Manuel, Blue Springs; and 12 grandchildren.

Services will be at 6 p.m., Monday, at Cornerstone Church in Blue Springs. The family suggests contributions to The Rachel House, 1401 Vesper, Blue Springs, Mo., 64015.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cremation Society of Kansas City

Beverly June Thompson

Beverly June Thompson, 66, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2000, at North Kansas City Hospital.

Ms. Thompson was born June 12, 1933, at St. Joseph, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her sons, James E. Alvis in 1978 and Mark S. Alvis in 1977, and grandchild, Christopher Phillip Scott Alvis, in 1982.

Survivors include her sons, David M. Alvis, Harrisonville, Mo.; William D. Alvis, of the home; Donald E. Alvis, Phillip S. Alvis and Bryan L. Alvis, all of Independence; Donald E. Thomspon, Kansas City; 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial is in Mound Grove cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the chapel.

Dawson N. Tucker
Griffin T. Tucker

Dawson Nicholas Tucker and Griffin Thomas Tucker, twin sons of Jason and Cortney Tucker of Lawrence, Kan., were still born on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at Overland Park (Kan.) Regional Medical Center.

In addition to their parents, they are survived by two half brothers, James Tucker and Austin Tucker, also of Lawrence; paternal grandparents, James and Janice Tucker, Lawrence; maternal grandparents, Rhonda Meschede, Blue Springs, and Tom and Sheila Martz, Springdale, Ark.; paternal great-grandfather, George Zook, Lawrence; and maternal great-grandfather, Richard Moore, Marshall, Mo.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Oak Hill cemetery in Lawrence. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church Library and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, Kan. 66044.

ADA B. ANDES

Ada Bell Andes, 84, Lake Tapawingo, died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at Monterey Park Nursing Center.

Mrs. Andes was born April 6, 1913, in Burlington, Colo., and had been a resident of Lake Tapawingo since 1960. She was a Christian and a member of the Lake Tapawingo Women`s Club. She was a volunteer atSt. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Chester C. Andes in 1982, who was the first mayor of Lake Tapawingo.

Her survivors include four daughters, Geri Choate and Delores Hamilton, both of Lake Tapawingo, Charlene Roscher, Blue Springs, and Dixie Allen, Pleasant Hill, Mo.; a sister, Lola Chenot, Fort Collins, Colo.; 16 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Blue Springs cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Aviary Fund at Monterey Park Nursing Center. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Blue Springs Chapel.

WEAVER BROWN

Weaver Brown, 76, Independence, died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at Glennon Place Care Center.

Mr. Brown wasborn Nov. 17, 1921, in Brumley, Mo., and had lived in this area since 1962. He was a drill operator for Anrok Materials in Independence for 14 years, retiring in 1983. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He had been a member of the Teamsters Union and the Church of God.

His survivors include his wife, Effie Brown of the home; four sons, Paul Brown, Ash Grove, Kenneth Brown, Parkville, Mo., Darrell Brown, Kansas City, and Roger Brown, Independence; a brother, June Brown, Independence; three sisters, Mildred Rogers, Stoutland, Mo., Ap Dwyer, Sunrise Beach, Mo., and Mae Lancaster, Southwest City, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

ROBERT B. CARY

Robert B. Cary, 94, Lee`s Summit, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at John Knox Village, Lee`s Summit.

Mr. Cary was born March 7, 1903, in Lone Jack, and was a lifelong area resident. He was a teacher at Fort Osage High School until retirement in 1971. He had taught school for 47 years in Pleasant Grove, Round Prairie, Murphy, Baird and 26 years at Fort Osage. He was also a salesman for the Bunting Hardware Store in Independence. He was a member of Church of Christ but attended Oakland United Methodist in Buckner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fay Cary on Feb. 20, 1992.

His survivors include four sisters, Cecil Shippy and Opal Arrington, both of Grain Valley, Hazel Krzywicki and Georgia Goodwin, both of Lee`s Summit; two sisters-in-law, Frances Cary and Anna Phelps; many nieces and nephews, including Richard D. Cocklin.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Brown Funeral Home, Buckner. Burial will be in the Blue Springs cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fort Osage Scholarship Fund in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cary, 2101 N. Twyman Road, Independence, Mo. 64058.

MARVIN E. FITZWATER SR.

Marvin Edward Fitzwater Sr., 66, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at the Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Fitzwater was born May 30, 1931, in Norborne, Mo., and had lived most of his life in Independence. He had worked for Armco Steel for 37 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the United Steelworkers of America Local 13 and was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener.

His survivors include his wife, Helen Fitzwater of the home; two sons, Ed Fitzwater Jr., Leon, Kan., and Gary Fitzwater, Independence; four daughters, Fran Grubb, Cheryl Garringer, Michelle O`Guin and Denise Pace, all of Independence; two brothers, Leroy Fitzwater, Raymore, Mo., and Leonard Fitzwater, Lexington, Mo.; four sisters, Mary Cox, Sunrise Beach, Mo., Myrtle Smith, Versailles, Mo., Edna Carlton, Independence, and Dora Parker, Gladstone, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.

RUBY L. PETTET

Ruby Lois Pettet, 91, died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

She was a former resident of Independence and a member of the Birchwood Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Husten T. Pettet Sr. Her survivors include five sons, Wayne, Howard, H.T., Don and Charles; a daughter, Judy; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Sheil Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Birchwood Baptist Church.

HELEN D. SHARP

Helen D. Sharp, 96, Lee`s Summit, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998.

Mrs. Sharp was born March 9, 1901, in Hutchinson, Kan. She attended Westport High School and earned her bachelor`s and master`s degrees from the University of Kansas. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Howard B. Sharp, in 1976, and a son, Richard L. Sharp.

Her survivors include her granddaughter, Stacey S. Chippendale, and a great-granddaughter, Maria A. Chippendale.

Graveside services will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel.

LAILA R. WHITE

Laila R. White, 80, Independence, died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. White was born Sept. 2, 1917, in Independence and was a lifelong resident of Independence. She was a homemaker and a member of the Maywood Baptist Church.

Her survivors include her husband of 52 years, F. Wayne White of the home; a daughter, Judi Dempsey, Kingsville, Mo.; a son, Jim White, Branson, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Maywood Baptist Church or to Independence Regional Hospice.

CHARLES F. KOESTNER

Charles Francis Koestner, 74, New Port Richey, Fla., died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at the Truman Medical Center-East Long Care Center, Kansas City.

Mr. Koestner was born Sept. 4, 1924, in Burlington, Iowa, and had also lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa, before moving to New Port Richey. He was in pharmaceuticals and supply sales for Massengil Corp. in the early 1950s through the mid-1970s. He then worked for Vet Specialties Corp., Omaha, Neb., until retiring in 1988. He was a member of Knights of Columbus and was a member of St. James Catholic Church in New port Richey. He was a prior member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Council Bluffs. He was a 1943 graduate of the Burlington High School. He was a member of the Loras College class of 1948 in Dubuque, Iowa.

His survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Donna Koestner, Allen, Texas, and David and Karen Koestner, Lewisville, Texas; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Kimberly and Dan Torpey, Parkville, Mo., Carole and Larry Jones, Odessa, Robin Faulkner, Columbia, Miss., and Camille and Reid Philips, Sioux Center, Iowa; a brother, Robert Koestner, Davenport, Iowa; two sisters, Sister Mary Carla (Anna Koestner), Burlington and Mary Louise Arch, Princeton, Ill.; and 15 grandchildren.

Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church, Burlington. Burial will be in Sacred Heart cemetery, Burlington. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, where the rosary will be at 3 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the Assistance League of Kansas City.

PAULA S. NORRIS

Paula S. Norris, 46, of Gower, formerly of Independence, passed away Wednesday, July 22, 1998 at a hospital in St. Joseph, Mo.

She was born November 8, 1951, in Fayettville, N.C., and received her undergraduate degree in psychology and sociology. After attending Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, N.C., she later received her MA in special education for the mentally handicapped at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.

After her marriage she lived in Fayetteville and later became a missionary in the Dominican Republic. In 1993 she moved to Independence and in 1997 moved to Gower, Mo.

Mrs. Norris taught for the Fayetteville School District for nine years and was awarded Teacher of the Year in 1981.

She was a member of the Evangelistic Center Church in Kansas City and also the Evangelistic Center Church North, south of Gower.

She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Phillip Norris of the home, three sons, Nathan, Jonathan and Phillip and one daughter, Alison, all of the home.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Evangelistic Center Church, 1024 Truman Road, Kansas City.

Burial will be at Allen cemetery, Gower, Mo. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Saturday at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Gower, Mo. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the church in Kansas City.
