DEVETTA HARRIS
Devetta Morris Harris, 82, Lee`s Summit, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at Menorah Medical Center.
Mrs. Harris was born Feb. 22, 1915, in Glenstead, Mo., and lived in Sedalia, Mo., for 23 years before moving to Lee`s Summit in 1989. She was co-owner and operator of the Harris Davis Paint Store.
Her survivors include her husband of 50 years, John C. Harris Sr. of the home; a son, John C. "Jerry" Harris Jr., Shawnee, Kan.; three sisters, Beatrice Carpenter, Otterville, Mo., and Jeanne Craig and Nadyne Epstein, both of Independence; two brothers, Bill Morris, Aurora, Colo., and Bob Morris, Kansas City; two grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
DEIGH W. IRWIN
Deigh Wright Irwin, 71, Blue Springs, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Irwin was born Sept. 7, 1926, in Kansas City. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He taught at William Chrisman High School in 1969, and at the Central Missouri State University Residence Center of Independence from 1970 to 1974. He was assistant state director of Cooperative and Distributive Education in Jefferson City from 1975 to 1982, and then became its director. He returned to Kansas City in 1982 and taught at Southwest High School, retiring in 1988 as the educational administrator of the Pioneer Campus of Metropolitan Community College.
His survivors include his wife, Wanda Lou Irwin of the home; two sons, David W. Irwin, Colorado Springs, and Jack A. Melton, Blue Springs; two daughters, Debra W. Wilson, Palm Desert, Calif., and Laura Y. Hartung, Blue Springs; a brother, Jim Irwin, Salt Lake City; a sister, Doris Lalor, Ridgecrest, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
MARGARET E. JAMES
Margaret E. Willhoit James of Kansas City died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997, at St. Luke`s Hospital.
Mrs. James was born Jan. 8, 1906, in Cleveland, Tenn., moving to this area at the age of five. She lived in Oregon, California, and Overland Park, Kan., before moving to Kansas City in 1972. She was a graduate of William Chrisman High School, and received her registered nursing degree in 1927 from the St. Luke`s Hospital School of Nursing and was president of her graduating class. Her first position was with the Public Health Division of the Kansas City School Board, where she was assigned to Mount Washington school for seven years. In 1937, she received a bachelor`s degree in public health nursing from the University of Minnesota, and served as director of Public Health Nursing in the city Health Department from 1939 to 1947.
She was on assignment for seven years as a senior nurse officer with the U.S. Public Health Service in the Middle East. In 1947, she became a career commissioned officer for the U.S. Public Health Service and was stationed in Athens, Greece, where she set up public health nursing services throughout the country. From 1951 to 1954, she taught post graduate classes for Public Health Nurses at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, and in 1955, she went to Washington, D.C., to serve with the Tuberculosis Division of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. In 1957, she was assigned to the Division of International Health and the Division of Indian Health to work on behalf of the American Indians on reservations in Oregon, Washington and Idaho.
Her final assignment was in the Public Health Service in the Regional Office in San Francisco, where she served as public health service consultant in nursing to the Social Security Administration in the early days of Medicare. She retired in 1970. She was a member of the AAUW, League of Women Voters, Women`s City Club, president and past presidents, United Nations Association, International Relations Council, St. Luke`s Nurses Alumni, Salvation Army Auxiliary, Red Cross and Current Issues Discussion Group. She also supported many cultural activities: The Theater League, Repertory Theater and The Annual Book and Author Dinners. She was a member of Prairie Baptist Church and the Women in Today`s World at the church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl James.
Her survivors include a brother, Alvin Willhoit, Blue Springs; two sisters, Alice Morris, Blue Springs, and Louise Jackson, Independence; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Prairie Baptist Church, 75th and Roe.The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church or St. Luke`s Hospital School of Nursing.
JOSEPH W. JONES
Joseph Walter Jones, 68, Oak Grove, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Jones was born June 16, 1929, near Grovespring, Mo. For several years, he was a radio broadcasting engineer and worked at various stations in Missouri, Kansas and Wisconsin. He twice served in the U.S. Army and was last honorably discharged in 1947. He was the founder of Barley Loaf Ministry, which worked to encourage people in their faith and to spread the word of God through printed materials. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mary Ellen Simmerman Jones, Nov. 27, 1996.
His survivors include eight children, Joseph Stephen Jones, Odgen, Utah, JoEllyn Hardin, Chillicothe, Mo., Roxanna V. Stephens and Susan D. Decker, both of Independence, Charles Aaron Jones, Raytown, Phillips Michael Jones, Cameron, Mo., John Clifford Jones, Oak Grove, and Paul G. Jones, Irving, Texas; a brother, Kenneth Jones, Kansas City; three sisters, Florence Neiderhiser, Jewell, Kan., Loretta Swanigan, Independence, and Rosalee Whitehat, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; 23 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City. Burial will be in Green Lawn cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
MICHAEL D. LUDOVICO
Michael Dominick Ludovico, 71, Kansas City, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Ludovico was born July 17, 1926, in Newark, N.J., and lived in Monterey, Calif., for 26 years before moving to this area in 1985. He was retired from the Federal Police. He worked for the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Independence from 1991 until recently. He was a member of the Independence Branch of Jesus Christ Restored Church. He was a 22-year Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and received the Bronze Star.
His survivors include his wife, Sallie Ludovico of the home; two sons, Michael D. Ludovico Jr. and Thomas P. Ludovico, both of Roseville, Calif.; two brothers, Pasquale Ludovico, New Jersey, and Oranzo Ludovico, Hazlet, N.J.; two sisters, Rosemary Mattia, Atlantic City, N.J., and Stella Dalley, Las Vegas, Nev.; two stepdaughters, Cathlene Ferguson, Independence, and Collene Morris, Kansas City; six grandchildren, Jeff Ludovico, Thomas P. Ludovico Jr., Jennifer Ludovico, Candace Ludovico, Ashley Ludovico and Kristina Ludovico; and four step grandchildren, Mathew Ferguson, Jessica Morris, Kaitlyn Ferguson and Stephanie Ferguson.
Memorial services will be 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the South Crysler Restoration Branch Church, 16101 E. Salisbury Road; cremation. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice or the Independence Branch of Jesus Christ Restored Church, 707 Allen Road, Independence. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
LORETTA M. McDONOUGH
Loretta Mae McDonough, 87, Independence, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at the Independence Manor Care Center.
Mrs. McDonough was born Sept. 19, 1910, in Vinita, Okla., and had lived in Independence for 46 years. She worked for Sears, Roebuck & Co. for 22 years, retiring in 1974. Her husband, Elgin McDonough, died in 1992.
Her survivors include two daughters, Aleain Mae McNurlin, Osage Beach, Mo., and Elgean June Cole, Raymore, Mo.; a son, Joe D. McDonough, Independence; nine grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Fairview cemetery, Vinita. Friends may call from 6:30 to 8 tonight at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
LOUISE M. PETRECHKO
Louise M. Petrechko, 73, Independence, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Petrechko was born April 2, 1924, in Kansas City, and was a lifelong area resident. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Andrew Petrechko, died in 1988.
Her survivors include a daughter, Mary Billings, Center, Mo.; and a son, William Curtis Willhem, Denver.
Graveside services will be noon Thursday at Mount Washington cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel.
DORIS L. SNAVELY
Doris Lee Snavely, 85, Blue Springs, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997.
Mrs. Snavely was born April 6, 1912, in Mammoth Springs, Ark., and lived in Kansas City, Kan., and Lake of the Ozarks before returning to this area six years ago. The last two years she was a resident of the Woods Chapel Retirement Lodge. She had worked for Gateway Sporting Goods before she retired. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs. Her husband, William Snavely, died in 1992.
Her survivors include two daughters, Irma Owen, Blue Springs, and Noram "Corky" McCray, Bellville, Texas; two sons, Bill Snavely, Lenexa, Kan., and Larry Snavely, Bonner Springs, Kan.; a sister, Florence White, LaCygne, Kan.; two brothers, Emmett Frost, Houston, Mo., and Leo Frost, Kansas City, Kan.; six grandchildren, Sandy Boring, Susan Devane, Mark Snavely, Tommy McCray, Nancy Knight, and Melissa Quiring; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6 to 9 tonight at the chapel.
JOSEPHINE R. CHOPLIN
Josephine R. Choplin, 83, of Independence, died Friday, March 21, 1997, at St. Luke`s Hospital, Kansas City.
She was born June 15, 1913, in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. She was a graduate of the Kansas City Teachers College and earned a master`s degree from Columbia University in New York. She was a teacher in the Kansas City School District for 42 years, the last 21 at North Rock Creek Elementary in Independence. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa international honorary sorority for women educators.
Her survivors include her sister, Mary Ruth Doll, Jefferson City; nine nieces and nephews, 16 great-nieces and -nephews, and one great-great-niece.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
DOROTHY M. DUNN
Dorothy M. Dunn, 68, of Blue Springs died Thursday, March 20, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Dunn was born on April 5, 1928, in Kansas City. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for 30 years before retiring in May 1996. She also helped organize the sports organizations and other activities at St. John LaLande Catholic Church. She participated in Stephens Ministries and was a member of the Rural Carrier Association.
Survivors include her husband, John D. Dunn Jr., Golden, Mo.; a son, John D. Dunn III of the home; two daughters, Susan Mantazey, Blue Springs, and Karen Perdue, Lee`s Summit; a brother, Charles Hasenzahl, Blue Springs; two sisters, Catherine Rauzi, Raytown, and Edna Oulton Lakewood, Colorado; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Webb-Freer Chapel. Flowers may be sent to a loved one in her memory or to St. Mary`s Hospital`s hospice.
ALMA L. GARWOOD
Alma L. "Al" Garwood, 76, of Blue Springs died Thursday, March 20, 1997, at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Garwood was born on May 6, 1920, in Crawford County, Pa., and had lived most of his life in Erie, Pa., before moving to Blue Springs in 1989. He was a carpet salesman with Sheldon`s Carpets Inc. in Erie before retiring in 1989. He was a Mason, Scottish Rite, a Shriner and a member of the Blue Springs Shrine Club. He was an elder in the Pleasant Heights congregation of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Survivors include his wife, Ettie Garwood, of the home; two sons, James Garwood and Ron Garwood, both of Blue Springs; two brothers, Melvin Garwood, Linesville, Pa., and Richard Garwood, Blue Springs; a sister, Ethelda Montana, New York; and three granddaughters.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Inurnment in Mound Grove Columbarium. Memorial contributions can be made to the Pleasant Heights RLDS Church building fund or the RLDS Temple endowment fund.
WILLIAM M. HAHNFELD
William M. Hahnfeld, 77, formerly of Independence, died March 21, 1997, at Ashton Court Care Center in Liberty, Mo.
Mr. Hahnfeld was born Oct. 27, 1919, in Kansas City, Kan. He lived most of his live in the Independence area before living in Liberty the past several years. He was a foreman for General Motors at the Fairfax plant for 30 years and retired in 1985. He was a member of the Rockwood Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II.
Survivors include a wife, Mildred L. Hahnfeld, Liberty; a son, Terry Hahnfeld, Bronaugh, Mo.; two daughters, Cheryl Hahnfeld, Lenexa, Kan., and Sandra Englen, Clifton, Colo.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Washington cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Heart of America Hospice.
MARGARET R. HOWE
Margaret R. Howe, 90 of Blue Springs died Thursday, March 20, 1997, at John Knox Village Care Center.
Mrs. Howe was born on Nov. 20, 1906, in New York City, and lived in the area for the past 11 years. She was a member of St. Mark`s Catholic Church.
Survivors include a son, John A. Howe, Irving, Texas; two daughters, Margaret R. Conroy, Greenville, S.C.; Gerri Passanisi, Blue Springs; a brother, Andrew Ripp, Greenville, S.C.; asister, Agnus Malewit, Fairlawn, N.J.; 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be at Mount Olivet cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the church.
HAZEL LANING
Hazel Laning, 75, of Independence died March 20, 1997, at her daughter`s home in Blue Springs.
Mrs. Laning was born on Dec. 12, 1921, in Iola, Kan. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Survivors include two sons, Billy Lester Lanning, Cedwick, Kan., and James E. Lanning, Dickerson, Texas; a daughter, Dorothy Cramer, Blue Springs; two brothers, Charles E. Perkey, Mexico, Mo., and Herbert (Tubby) Perkey, Nevada, Mo.; four sisters, Martha Perkey, of Nevada, Edith Schmidt, Stockton, Mo., Melba Whittle, Independence, and Bonnie Kimrey, Roby, Mo.; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Love cemetery in El Dorado Springs, Mo. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Chapel in Blue Springs. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
MARY E. LARUE
Mary E. Larue, 76, of Blue Springs died March 21, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Larue was born on Jan. 10, 1921, in Saline County, Mo. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Blue Springs.
She was preceeded in death by her husband, Charles LaRue, in 1993.
Survivors include a son, Don Larue, Blue Springs; a daughter, Wanda Bowman, Blue Springs; three grandchilren and three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Inurnment. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church.
