CURMET F. SHELTON

Curmet Foster "Jim" Shelton, 63, Gretna, Va., died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, in Gretna.

Mr. Shelton was born June 25, 1933, in Gretna, and lived in Hampton, Va., from 1952 until returning to Gretna in 1982. He was a crane operator for Lockwood Brothers Inc. in Hampton for 30 years and for the past 15 years he farmed in Gretna. He was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church in Gretna and Operating Engineers Local 101 in Hampton.

His survivors include his wife, Barbara Shelton, Gretna; one daughter, Mary Ann Shelton Ketchum, Independence; three brothers, Bill Shelton, Paul Shelton and Ramsey Shelton, all of Gretna; four sisters, Myrtal Rowland, Gretna, Ethel Campbell, Richmond, Va., Marie Bibee, Hurt, Va., and Jeannie Spray, Altavista, Va.; and two grandchildren, Bobby Ketchum and Rachel Ketchum, both of Independence.

Services were today at the Colbert Moran Funeral Home, Gretna. Entombment will be in Gretna.

JOHN J. VAN DUSEN

John J. Van Dusen, 71, Independence, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Van Dusen was born June 2, 1926, in Dawn, Mo. He was a salesman for Blair Milling Co. and previously worked for Farmland Industries. He was a Merchant Marine veteran of World War II.

His survivors include his wife, Helen A. Van Dusen of the home; one son, John David Van Dusen, Ozark, Mo.;two daughters, Kris Van Dusen and Vicki Oppel, both of Independence; two brothers, Roy Van Dusen and Rex Van Dusen, both of Chillicothe, Mo.; one sister, Norma Aussiker, Tyler, Texas; and two grandchildren, Jim Van Dusen and Amanda Oppel.

Graveside services were today at Mount Washington cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Passantino Brothers Funeral Home, Kansas City.

JAMES A. BRAY

James Alvin Bray, 61, Independence, died Thursday, March 27, 1997, at St. Mary`s Manor Care Center of Blue Springs.

Mr. Bray was born May 7, 1935, in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. He was a captain in the Independence Fire Department for 32 years before retiring in 1989. He also had worked for Argosy Casino. He was a member of the Independence Horseshoe Pitching Club. He was a Navy veteran.

His survivors include his wife, Nancy Bray of the home; two sons, Bill Lee Bray, Moberly, Mo., and Mitchell A. Bray of the home; two brothers, Earl E. Bray, Kansas City, and Thomas E. Bray, Raytown; two sisters, Pearl Pickett, Independence, and Marie Harmon, Blue Springs; and a grandson, Mitchell A. Bray II, Independence.

Services will be at 1 today at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Contributions may be made to the funeral home to help defray funeral expenses.

KATIE K. KAVADAS

Katie K. Kavadas, 17, Oak Grove, formerly of Independence, died Thursday, March 27, 1997, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Katie was born March 25, 1980, in Independence and was a lifelong area resident. She was a student at Oak Grove High School, where she had been a member of the school band, played volleyball and served as statistician for both wrestling and baseball.

Her survivors include her parents, Chris and Martha Kavadas of the home; one brother, Shawn Kavadas, and one sister, Becky Kavadas, both of Oak Grove; her paternal grandmother, Martha Brown, and her maternal grandmother, Thelma Lamb, both of Independence; and one niece, Chelsey Kavadas, Oak Grove.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 tonight at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Make A Wish Foundation, 2055 S. Fremont, Springfield, Mo., 65804.

ELVIE R. PERRY

Elvie "Ruth" Perry, 78, Independence, died Friday, March 21, 1997, at Rosewood Nursing Home.

Mrs. Perry was born Dec. 21, 1918, in San Antonio, Texas, and had lived most of her life in Independence. She worked for the Social Security Administration before she retired.

Her survivors include one son, Phillip Perry, Independence; two daughters, Sylvia Powell and Ruthann Griggs, Sibley; one brother, Glaud Smith, Blue Springs; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. April 6 at the Church of Jesus Christ Atherton Restoration Branch.

DALLAS E. BLAIR

Dallas E. Blair, Kansas City, died Tuesday, March 25, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Blair was born July 17, 1916, in Marshall, Mo. He worked for Sears, Roebuck & Co. from 1937 to 1945 and for the Sealright Co. from 1945 until he retired in 1981. He was treasurer of Local 510 of the United Paperworkers International Union. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, was a deacon for more than 50 years, and served as treasurer, chairman of the personnel committee, and was secretary of his Sunday school class and the Adult Department. He was a 1936 graduate of East High School, Kansas City, served as assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 132 for many years and was a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say.

His survivors include his wife, Imogene Blair of the home; one daughter, Beverly Orr, Las Vegas, Nev.; one son, Larry Blair, Knoxville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Paula Gorter, Michael Blair, Janet Donovan and Jon Blair; three step granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Carson Independence Chapel. Burial will bein Mount Washington cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church, Boy Scouts of America or the Oncology Clinic at Trinity Lutheran Hospital.

THELMA L. HANKS

Thelma Loretta Hanks, 84, Blue Springs, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, at St. Mary`s Hospital of Blue Springs.

Mrs. Hanks was born Feb. 21, 1913, in Scott City, Kan. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Hanks in 1983, a son, Robert E.Hanks Sr., and an infant daughter.

Her survivors include three daughters, June Cooper, Climax Springs, Mo., Rosalie Wilson, Odessa, and Joyce Donaldson, Independence; one sister, Juanita Branson, Liberty, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Webb-Freer Funeral Home, Blue Springs. Burial will be in Greenton cemetery, Odessa. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

JIMMIE L. JOHNSON

Jimmie L. Johnson, 62, Independence, died Tuesday, March 25, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.

Mr. Johnson was born Nov. 24, 1934, in Versailles, Mo., and had lived in this area most of his life. He worked for Spectragraphics Inc. for 47 years, retiring as vice president of operations in 1996. He was an Army veteran and a self-taught musician and singer, having played in many country bands for more than 25 years. He was the lead guitar in the band "Pick-Up Trucks." He was active in Pop Warner Football and Queen City Baseball leagues. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joann Masters Johnson in1978.

His survivors include three sons, James A. Johnson, Lee`s Summit and Terry C. Johnson and William D. Johnson, both of Independence; one daughter, Lori Ann Johnson, Shawnee, Kan.; his companion, Joan Justice of the home; one brother, Wilbur Johnson, Kansas City; five sisters, Nellie Smith, Marjorie Owens and Claudette Gray, all of Kansas City, Joanne McKenzie, Peculiar, Mo., and Thelma Martin, Platte City, Mo.; and three grandsons, Cody Joseph Johnson, Dylan James Johnson and Shane Matthew Johnson.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Christ United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery.Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

GILBERTA M. PARKER

Gilberta M. Parker, 80, Independence, died Wednesday, March, 26, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Parker was born March 14, 1917, in Florence, Mo. She was a seamstress for the Betty Rose Garment Factory before she retired. She was a member of St. Mark`s Catholic Church.

Her survivors include her husband, Joseph Parker of the home; one son, Arthur Dean Ehlers, and one daughter, Paula Reeves, both of Independence; two brothers, Earl Worthley, Climax Springs, Mo., and Preston Worthley, Stover, Mo.; a sister, Nacine Hedgepeth, Kimberling City, Mo.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 9 a.m. Friday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel, Kansas City. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Kansas City.Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

LELAND L. PETERMAN

Leland Leroy Peterman, 86, Kansas City, formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mr. Peterman was born in Fort Scott, Kan., and lived in California before moving to this area in 1974. He had previously owned and operated a manufacturing company, and most recently had been a real estate salesman with Realty Executives in Independence. He was a member of the RLDS Stone Church congregation. He was preceded in deathby his first wife, Mae Higdon Peterman in 1988.

His survivors include his wife, LaVonne Peterman of the home; one son, Donn Leroy Peterman, Clovis, Calif.; one daughter, Jacquelyn Stringer, Ontario, Calif.; one stepson, Brad Carpenter, Gladstone, Mo.; two brothers, Loren Peterman, Tujunga, Calif., and Wilbur Peterman, Clinton, Mo.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and twogreat-great-grandsons.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Entombment will be in the Mound Grove cemetery Mausoleum. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

DOROTHY E. DILLEE

Dorothy E. Dillee, 85, Independence, died Monday, March10, 1997, at Rosewood Health Care Center.

Mrs. Dillee was born Aug. 19, 1911, in Kansas City and was a lifelong area resident. She was a homemaker and a member of the Ridgewood RLDS congregation, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 329 in Independence and was past president of the Social Order of the Beauceant. Her survivors include a son, Rex P. Dillee, Independence; two grandchildren, Jennie Boulware and Gary Dillee, both of Kansas City; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Carson Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to7:30 p.m. Thursday at the chapel.

MILDRED L. DUNHAM

Mildred L. Dunham, 83, Independence, died Monday, March 10, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.

Mrs. Dunham was born July 30, 1913, in Mosby, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of her life. She was an assembly line worker for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, retiring in 1973. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence. She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Dunham in 1983, and two children, Phillip Dunham in 1968 and Mona Dunham in 1996.

Her survivors include two sisters, Lola Mann, Independence, and Jenny Hedlund, Overland Park, Kan..

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Noland Road Chapel. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery, Kearney, Mo. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to your favorite charity.

BILL FRAZIER

Bill Frazier, 79, Independence, died Monday, March 10, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Frazier was born Dec. 18, 1917, in Oklahoma City and had lived in the Independence area most of his life. He was a business manager for the Sprinkler Fitters, retiring in 1980, and was a member of Sprinkler Fitters Union 314. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Company F of the 43rd Engineer Battalion in the South Pacific. He received the Presidential Unit Citation Award, five bronze stars, six overseas bars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, American Defense Service Ribbon, Meritorious Service Plaque, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon and a Silver Star.

He was a member of Beverly Hills Baptist Church, Mount Washington Masonic Lodge 614 A.F.&.A.M., Mount Washington Chapter 142 Royal Arch Masons, Independence Council 49 of the Cryptic Masons, Palestine Commandry 17 of Independence, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry and the Ararat Shrine Temple of Kansas City. He was a life member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000 and Queen City Chapter 10 of Disabled American Veterans.

His survivors include his wife, Dora "Doe" Frazier of the home; a son, George Edward Frazier, Kansas City; and a daughter, Donna Lee Frazier, Excelsior Springs, Mo.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Carson Independence Chapel, with Mount Washington Masonic Lodge 614 A.F.&.A.M officiating. Burial will be in Mount Washington cemetery, with military graveside rites provided by VFW Post 1000. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel.

MARY M. GLENNON

Mary Margaret Mason Glennon, 78, Boonville, Mo., formerly of Independence, died Monday, March 10, 1997, at her home.

Mrs. Glennon was born Aug. 28, 1918, in Independence. She was a member of the Hannah Cole Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Glennon.

Her survivors include two first cousins, Mildred Mason, Liberty, Mo., and Sara Bargfrede, Blackburn, Mo.

Graveside services were today at the Veterans cemetery, Fort Leavenworth, Kan. The family suggests contributions to the DAR or the church.

EARL V. HOUSTON

Earl V. Houston, 82, Oak Grove, died Monday, March 10, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Houston was born March 18, 1914, in Grain Valley and had lived in the Oak Grove area for the last 50 years. He farmed all of his life and retired from Clarkson Construction in 1971. He was a member of Waldo Avenue Baptist Church and a charter member of The Kansas City Chuggers, an antique car club.

His survivors include his wife, Lucille Houston of the home; four daughters, Shirley Dennis and Gail Dennis, both of Bates City, Andrea Martens, Oak Grove, and Kay Woody, Odessa; a brother, Franklin Houston, Buckner; three sisters, Viola Thomas, Buckner, Phyllis Wallace, Independence, and Thelma Johnson, Kansas City; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Burial will be in Buckner cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the chapel.
