CHARLES R. PEGRAM
Charles Raymond Pegram, 62, Independence, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Pegram was born Feb. 7, 1935, in Kankakee, Ill., and had lived in Independence most of his life. He was a tax accountant for the Internal Revenue Service for 11 years, retiring in 1994. He was anArmy veteran.
His survivors include his wife, Loretta L. Pegram of the home;one daughter, Catherine Ann Pegram, Bangor, Maine; one son, Charles Michael Pegram, Rock Island, Ill.; his mother, Mildred Pegram, Lee`s Summit; and one sister, Shirley Erickson, Arvada, Colo.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the George C. Carson & Sons Independence Chapel. Burial will be in Mound Grove cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
LOUIS N. "DEAN" WHITEHEAD
Louise N. "Dean" Whitehead, 76, Independence, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mr. Whitehead was born in Logan, Iowa, and lived in Warrensburg, Mo., before moving to Independence. He was a school counselor for the Kansas City School District, retiring in 1983. He attended Graceland College, University of Iowa, University of Wyoming, Central Missouri State University, University of Colorado, University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he had been on the Standing High Council for 19 years. He had also been a pastor at the Eden Heights, Englewood and Enoch Hills congregations. He was presently an evangelist patriarch and attended the Cornerstone congregation. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
His survivors include his wife, Elma "Deanie" Whitehead of the home; one daughter, Vicky Cain, Kansas City; one brother, Harold Eldon Whitehead, Independence; and four grandchildren, Sara Cain, Emily Cain, Bradley Cain and Bethany Cain, all of Kansas City.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Speaks Midtown Chapel. Entombment will be in the Mound Grove cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the chapel. The family suggests contributions to the RLDS Cornerstone Church building fund.
ALBERTA BROOKS
Alberta Brooks, 89, Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Brooks was born Aug. 30, 1908, in Knobnoster, Mo. She lived in this area her entire life. She was a homemaker, owned Maid-Rite, and worked as a cook at McCoy School. She was a member of the PioneerWomen`s Democratic Club, Tops, Truman Medical Center-East Auxillary, Special Ministries and the Women`s Club at Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Walnut Park Congregation. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Henry Brooks, in 1987.
Her survivors include three daughters, Bettye Long, of Independence, Barbara Litchford, of Parris, Tenn., Ruth Ann Troyer, of Carthage, Mo.; a son, Henry Albert Brooks, of Mt. Joy, Pa.; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Speaks Midtown Chapel. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens.
ESTA ELLIOTT
Esta Elliott, 81, Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997, at Columbia Independence Regional Health Center.
Mrs. Elliott was born Nov. 12, 1915, in Carrollton, Mo. She was a homemaker and a legal secretary. She was a 50-year member of the Calio Chapter 44, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of Fairmont Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clark Elliott on Jan. 26, 1978.
Her survivors include a son, Jerry Elliott, Lee`s Summit; two grandsons, Brett Elliott and Scott Elliott; a brother, Ercil Cochran, Shawnee, Okla.; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Floral Hills Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel.
MARY GEORGINE GARVINO
Mary Georgine Gravino, 78, formerly of Lake Lotawana, died Thursday, Sept. 25. 1997 at Mariner Health in Olathe, Kan.
Mrs. Gravino was born March 24, 1919, in Independence. She was a quality control employee at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. She was a member of the Buckner United Methodist Church, the Lake LotawanaCommunity Club, American Legion Auxillary Unit 153 and LeFeems Cabane 1510. She lived in Lake Lotawana for 45 years.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, Joseph H. Gravino, in 1986; and by a son, Joseph H. Gravino Jr., in 1977.
Her survivors include two sons, Ernest H. Cooper, of Olathe, and Kevin L. Gravino, of Prairie Village, Kan.; two daughters, Mary Jay Williamson, of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Deborah Jo Samyn, of Mound City, Kan.; two sisters, Alma Bernard and Loretta Nickelson, both of Independence; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer`s Sons Blue Springs Chapel. Burial will be at Mount Olivet cemetery in Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Blue Springs Chapel. Donations may be made to the Hospice of Olathe.
BETTY J. HOOVER
Betty J. Hoover, 68, Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997.
Mrs. Hoover was born Jan. 11, 1929, in Lexington, Mo., and had lived in the Kansas City area since 1945. Shehad been a cook in the Kansas City area for many years. She was a member of Hall Cumorah Restoration Branch, Independence.
Her survivors include her husband, Jesse Hoover of the home; three children, Carole Hudson, Jesse Hoover Jr., and Shari Walker, all of Independence; three brothers, Donald Crowe and Jack Crowe, both of Independence, and Luther Crowe, Lakeside, Ariz.; her stepmother of 54 years, Mary Crow, Lexington; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by two sons, James Alan Hoover and John Hoover.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the tuition fund at Center Place Restoration School, 819 W. Waldo, Independence, Mo. 64050; or to the American Diabetic Association or to the American Heart Association.
RONALD F. KNAPP
Ronald F. Knapp, 60, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997, at the Medical Center of Independence.
Mr. Knapp was born April 29, 1937, in Independence. He was a life-long resident. He worked as fleet manager for Heilig Myers. He was a member of Coventry Estates Baptist Church, Promise Keepers, the Southern Baptist Convention, and was a sponsor of the Independence Neighborhood Council. He served in the Army as chaplain`s assistant.
His survivors include a wife, Beverly Knapp, of the home; three sons, Todd A. Knapp, of Springfield, Mo., Cris A. Schubert, of Chasebury, Wis., Brent R. Schubert, of Independence; two daughters, Rhonda M. Clevenger, of Lee`s Summit, and Tina R. Larson, of Independence;two brothers, Tim L. Knapp and Rodney D. Knapp, both of Independence; two sisters, Joyce E. Morgan, of Pueblo, Colo., and Sheila M. Knapp, of Independence; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Coventry Estates Baptist Church. Friends may call from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Carson and Sons chapel. Burial will be at Mound Grove cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
THOMAS G. MELTON
Dr. Thomas G. Melton, 77, of Independence, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997, at his home.
Dr. Melton was born Nov. 28, 1919, in Mowrystown, Ohio. He attended University of Iowa and the University of Dubuque, Iowa, where he graduated Cum Laud, with degrees in pharmacy, biology and chemistry. He then completed a Master of Divinity degree at the University of Dubuque, followed by additional post-graduate work at both Union Theological Seminary of New York and the University of Omaha Theological Seminary. He earned the Doctor of Tehology degree.
During World War II, he served in the United States Army Medical Corps in both the Pacific and European theaters. He attained the rank of Captain and received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
Dr. Melton served as a Presbyterian pastor at the First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo, Iowa; First Presbyterian Church in Estherville, Iowa; First Presbyterian Church of Waukegan, Ill.; and the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, where he served for 28 years. He was elected Pastor Emeritus of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence upon his retirement. He then served the Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church in North Kansas City and the First Presbyterian Church of St. Joseph, Mo.
He was active in the Independence community, serving on numerous committees and boards including the City of Independence Sister City Committee, the City of Independence Heritage Commission, the Midtown/Truman Road Corridor Redevelopment Corp., the Sunshine School Board, the YMCA Board and the Boys` Club Board. He was listed in "Who`s Who in the Midwest, " "Who`s Who in Religion, " and "Who`s Who in the Protestant Clergy."
His survivors include his wife of 50 years, JeanE. Melton of the home; one daughter, Nancy Melton-Helal; two sons, David Melton and Thomas Melton Jr.; three grandchildren, Eric Helal, Sara Melton and Laura Melton; and a nephew, Dr. Burt Faison.
A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Trust Fund of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence; Hospice, in care of Columbia Independence Regional Health Center; or to the American Cancer Society, 703 East 63rd Street, Kansas City, Mo. 64113. Arrangements are under the direction of D.W. Newcomer`s Sons, Noland Road Chapel.
ROSALIE NOLAND
Rosalie Noland, 72, Lawson, Mo., died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, at North Kansas City Hospital.
Mrs. Noland had been employed by a garment factory in Blue Springs for nine years, retiring in 1984. She had lived in Lawson for the past two years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles "Dub" Noland in 1991 and a brother, Joseph Button in 1961.She was a Methodist.
Her survivors include three sons, David Noland, Eldon, Mo., Mike Noland, Lawson, and Charles Noland Jr., Cameron, Mo.; a daughter, Juanita Saddler, Blue Springs; two brothers, C.J. "Bud" Button, Kansas City, Kan., and Bill Button, Linwood, Kan.; three sisters, Ruby Axon, Lansfield, Ga., Betty Hatfield, Lacine, Kan., and Janette Shull, Gladstaone, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Oct. 4 at Salem cemetery, U.S. 24, Independence. Arrangements by New Salem Funeral Home.
ALTA A. RISINGER
Alta Alice Risinger, 90, Grandview, formerly of Lake Tapawingo, died Friday, Sept. 26, 1997, at the Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, Kan.
Mrs. Risinger was born Oct. 15, 1906, in Jackson County and had lived most of her life in Lake Tapawingo area. She had taught school for many years in rural Independence and Blue Springs. She and her late husband, Charles Risinger, were co-owners and operators of Risinger Implement Co. and Risinger Berry Farm. She was a member of St. Luke`s United Church of Christ, Independence. She was active for many years in scouting.
Her survivors include a son, Charles Risinger, Paola, Kan.; two grandsons, Brad Risinger, Overland Park, Kan., and Greg Risinger, Holden, Mo.; and two great-grandsons, Chad Risinger and Gregory Risinger.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Woodlawn cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of George C. Carson & Sons.
KATHRYN L. "SEAGULL" STEARNS
Kathryn Lisa "Seagull" Stearns, 32, Albuquerque, N.M., formerly of Blue Springs, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 1997, in Albuquerque, N.M.
She was a graduate of Blue Springs High School. She earned a bachelor`s degree in art therapy and a master`s degree in special education from the University of New Mexico.
Her survivors include her mother, Wilma Stearns, Blue Springs; her father, Calvin Stearns, Reynoldsburg, Ohio; a brother, William Stearns; sisters, Sally Stearns and Kelly Lyn Stearns; nieces, Kelly Jo Stearns, Jessalyn Stearns and Carrie and Angie Stearns; two nephews, Michael Stearns and Bill Stearns; her stepmother, Wanda Stearns; and her stepbrother, Steve Stearns.
A service celebrating her life will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the Silent Unity Chapel, Missouri 350 and Colbern Road. In lieu of flowers, her parents suggests contributions to the Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Kansas City, 406 West 34th, Suite506, Kansas City, Mo. 64111.
