Dewey W. Dalton

Dewey Wilburn Dalton, 79, Carthage, died at 12:09 p.m. on Monday, June 9, 2003, at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Mr. Dalton was born July 1, 1923, in Valley Springs, Ark., to Jefferson Dewey Dalton and Ollie Belle Fullerton Dalton. He was a graduate of Carthage Senior High School, Class of 1941, attended Joplin Junior College for two years and Knox College, Galesburg, Ill. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps.

Mr. Dalton was a flight instructor at the Carthage Municipal Airport. He then joined Lawn Boy, Inc., serving as a production engineer and corporate pilot. He was an engineer for McCullough Chain Saws, Shreveport, La., A.B. Chance, Centralia, Mo.; Fairchild Press, Joplin and O'Sullivan Industries Inc., Lamar, retiring in 2001.

He married Kathryn Dininger on June 17, 1947, in Harrison, Ark. She survives.

Mr. Dalton and his wife, Kathryn, resided in Lamar, Mo., for 46 years moving to Carthage in 2002.

Other survivors include one daughter, Kathy Dalton Selvey and husband, Kirk, Carthage; two sons, Steve Dalton and wife, Sherry, East Peoria, Ill. and Greg Dalton, Carthage; seven grandchildren, Crystal Dalton, Steven G. Dalton, Daniel Warner, Jennifer Benefield, Kara Selvey, Kyle Selvey and Kreg Selvey.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Willard Dalton.

A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 11 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 12 in the First Baptist Church, Lamar. The Rev. Robert Hodson will officiate.

Burial will be in Park cemetery, Carthage.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Greg Dalton Campus, Missouri Baptist Children's Home, Lamar.

Arrangements are under the direction of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.

Ginger Brown

Ginger Brown, 73, Carthage, died at 7:55 a.m. on Sunday, June 8, 2003, at McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage, after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Brown was born May 31, 1930, in Duvall, Mo., the daughter of Clyde Cook and Ruth Hightower Cook. She was a 1947 graduate of Alba High School and attended Joplin Junior College for one year. She was a sales clerk at Precious Moments. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where she was a member of the Relief Society.

She married Wendell Brown on March 9, 1950, in Gentry, Ark. He survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Greg Brown, Pittsburg, Kan., Jeff Brown, Carthage; a daughter, Glenda Brown, Carthage; her mother, Ruth Cook, Carthage, and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Jackie Miller.

Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 12 at Knell Mortuary. A viewing and visitation will be held from noon to 12:40 p.m. on Friday, June 13 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. at the church. Bishop Vance Willis will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery, Carthage with Reed Mitton, president, dedicating the grave.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Lauren "Lonnie" Erwin

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. - Lauren A. "Lonnie" Erwin of Lee's Summit, passed away June 8, 2003.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at the D.W. Newcomer's Sons, Johnson County Funeral Chapel, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kan., with entombment in Johnson County Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call upon the family from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. before the service at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 6700 Antioch, Shawnee, Mission, KS 66204.

Lonnie was born Oct. 24, 1943, to Galen and Annabel Erwin in Webb City, Mo. Lonnie was a respiratory therapist for over 32 years before his retirement.

Survivors include his daughter, Elizabeth Robertson and her husband, Kent, Lee's Summit, Mo.; a brother, Dennis Erwin and his wife, Katsy, Carthage; sister, Lee Ann Branch and her husband, Jesse, Arkadelphia, Ark.; Sally Schmidt, Branson; grandson, Steve Robertson, several nieces, great-nieces and nephews.

Leona Maxine Wooten

MOUNT VERNON, Mo. - Leona Maxine Wooten, 89, Mount Vernon, died at 4:50 a.m. on Sunday, June 8, 2003, at the Mount Vernon Place Care Center.

Mrs. Wooten was born May 30, 1914, in LeRoy, Kan. to Orta M. and Ethel Rae Quiggle Crotts. She lived in the Lawrence County community most of her life. In her earlier years, she worked as a telephone operator and a hairdresser. She was a member of the Mount Vernon Christian Church.

On Feb. 18, 1939, she married T.W. Otis "Jack" Wooten in Diamond. He survives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant son, Gary Douglas Wooten; a twin sister, Laverne Bedwell; and two brothers, Virgle and Venice Crotts.

Services were at 2 p.m. today at the Fossett Mosher Funeral Home, Mount Vernon. Bill Vernon officiated.

Burial was in Goss cemetery.

Contributions are suggested to the Mount Vernon Christian Church.

Ginger G. Brown

Ginger G. Brown, 73, Carthage, died at 7:55 a.m. Sunday, June 8, 2003, at McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage.

Mrs. Brown was born May 31, 1930, in Duvall, Mo. to Clyde Cook and Ruth Hightower Cook. She was employed as a sales clerk in the Precious Moments Gift Shop. She was active in helping start the Headstart program in Carthage. She was involved in making Missouri Southern State College a four-year college. She taught in rural schools in Bloomingdale and Morning Star East. She was active in PTA of Carthage and served on the Mental Health Board in Jasper County. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Carthage, where she taught seminary class for 14 years.

She married Wendell Brown, on March 9, 1950, in Gentry, Ark. He survives.

Additional survives include two sons, Greg Brown, Pittsburg, Kan., and Jeff Brown, Carthage; a daughter, Glenda Brown, Carthage; her mother, Ruth Cook, Carthage and two grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by a sister, Jacquelin Miller.

Survives will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 12 at Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

Visitation is from 7-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Ulmer Funeral Home.

Memorial are suggested to the charity of choice.

Lucy Lee Payne

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Lucy L. Payne, 93, Kansas City, Mo., died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at Woodbine Healthcare Centre.

Mrs. Payne was born to Josephus and Mae Merrill Clark on May 31, 1910, in Perry, Kan. She was a retired school teacher, formerly teaching in rural Jasper County schools. She was a member of St. Luke Presbyterian Church and for over 60 years was a member of Eastern Star. She was also a member of AAUW, Delta Kappa Gamma and Retired Teachers.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Virgil D. Payne.

Survivors include three daughters, Peggy Hassig, Liberty, Mo, Marcia Howell, Big Pine, Calif. and Pamela Payne, Kansas City, Mo.; son, Max Payne, Terre Haute, Ind.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 12 at McGilley Antioch Chapel, 3325 NE Vivion Road, Kansas City, Mo. Friends may call one hour prior to service.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 13 at Memorial Lawn cemetery, Arkansas City, Kan.

Memorial are suggested to St. Luke Presbyterian Church, 4301 Vivion Road, Kansas City, MO 64119 or North Kansas City Cardiac Palliative Care.

Dewey Wilburn Dalton

Dewey Wilburn Dalton, 79, Carthage, died at 12:09 p.m. Monday, June 9, 2003, in Freeman West Hospital, Joplin.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Knell Mortuary, Carthage.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Lamar. Burial will be in Park cemetery, Carthage.

Neva C. Jarmin

Neva C. Jarmin, 92, Carthage, died Monday, June 9, 2003, at St. Luke's Nursing Center, Carthage.

Arrangements are pending at Ulmer Funeral Home.

Nancy Jean Sanders

Nancy J. Sanders went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 18, 2003.

She lived a full and happy life that she shared with many family members and friends. Nancy was the most self-less and giving person you could ever hope to meet. She always put others' needs in front of her own especially her family's and she was always willing to help out in any way that she could. Nancy enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing games with her sisters, reading and spending time outdoors.

Nancy died 5:10 p.m. Wednesday June 18, 2003, in Freeman West Hospital, Joplin. She was born Sept. 9, 1930, in Carthage to George Brown and Alta Ullom Brown. She has resided in Joplin the last 48 years where she worked in solder production for LaBarge, Inc. for 27 years. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Teamsters Local 823, Joplin.

She married C.L. Sanders, he preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Terry Horton, Pittsburg, Kan.; two sons, Robert Sanders, Seneca, Mo., Dan Sanders, Waveland, Miss.; seven grandchildren, Brent Duran, Sarah Cochran, Christian Sanders, Kathleen Sanders, Emily Sanders, Matthew Sanders, Michael Barnes; one great-grandson, Myles Cochran; one brother, Carroll Brown, Carthage; four sisters, Betty Frantz, Doris Schaunce, Eva Burel, Mary Hopper, all of Carthage.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Nancy was a beautiful person with a beautiful heart and she will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Friday, June 20 at the Knell Mortuary, Carthage.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21 in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be in Park cemetery, Carthage.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knell Mortuary, Carthage.

J.R. "Bob" Basnett

CARTERVILLE, Mo. - J.R. "Bob" Basnett, 91, Carterville, died at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin.

Mr. Basnett was born Dec. 27, 1911, in Carterville. He was employed for 38 years with the former Atlas Powder Co., now ICI Explosives, retiring in 1974. He was a member of the Carterville Christian Church and was ordained as a Christian minister and formerly pastored the Christian Church in Lawton, Kan. He was a 50-year member and Past Master of the Carterville Lodge 401 that later merged with the Webb City Lodge 512 AF&AM.; He also was a member of the Webb chapter 204 Order of Eastern Star in Webb City.

He married Crystal Hamilton on Jan. 27, 1935, in Vinita, Okla. She preceded him in death on July 14, 1975.

Survivors include a daughter, Robyn Sunderland, Carthage.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hedge-Lewis Chapel in Webb City with Lee Williams, minister, officiating.

Visitation is from 3-4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.

Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Carterville Christian Church.

Walter Bridges

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. - Walter Ray Bridges, 75, Midwest City, Okla., died June 19, 2003, at Midwest City Regional Hospital.

Mr. Bridges was born on April 11, 1928, in Wentworth, Mo. to Walter Robert and Beulah Higgins Bridges. He lived in Midwest City area for over 30 years. He was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church and was a mason.

Survivors include his wife, Carol, of the home; four sons, Ben Bridges, Diamond; Henry Bridges, Reeds, Ernest Bridges, Joplin and Perry Bridges, Midwest City; a daughter, Marilyn Bridges Miller, Houston, Texas; two step-daughters, Tina Anderson and Donna Anderson, both of Muskogee, Okla.; a sister, Vera Heckmaster, Diamond; a brother, Charley Bridges, Diamond; five grandchildren 10, stepgrandchildren and one step great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Naydeen.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Clark Funeral Home in Neosho.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 22 at Diamond (Mo.) cemetery.

Wilma L. Green

MADERA, Calif. - Wilma L. Green, 91, Madera, Calif., formerly of Carthage, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Madera Community Hospital.

Mrs. Green was born in Polk County, Mo., to James Edward and Gertrude Clark Lyman. She grew up at Carthage, and married Cecil Williams. They made their home in California. He died in 1953.

In 1960, she married Milo Green. He died in 1960. She retired after 23 years as a file clerk for FMC Corporation at San Jose, Calif. She moved to Madera in 2002, to make her home with her son.

Survivors include a son, Steven Green, Madera, Calif.; a brother, Eugene Lyman, Carthage; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Henry.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Lallarpe cemetery, LaHarpe, Kan., under the direction of Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel, Iola, Kan.
