Ida M. Brumback

Ida M. Brumback, 95, Carthage, died at Sunday, July 13 at Carthage Health and Rehab.

Arrangements are pending with Ulmer Funeral Home.

Ralph Milton Piercy

Ralph Milton Piercy, 76, Carthage, died at 2:43 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2003, at McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage.

Mr. Piercy was born Jan. 20, 1927, in Jasper County, Mo., to William and Grace Perkins Piercy. He was retired from serving in the United States Army and Navy. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Carthage, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Gideons International, American Legion, Shrine Nile Temple, Scottish Rite, Taiwan and Taipei and Patrol Craft Sailors Association.

He was united in marriage to Alicia Bairan on Sept. 27, 1989, in Jasper County. She survives.

Additional survivors include two daughters, Sharon Tharp, St. Louis, and Ruth B. Piercy, Carthage, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The body has been cremated. No services are planned.

A luncheon and visitation will be held after the 10:30 a.m. Worship Service on Sunday, July 13, at Church of the Nazarene, Carthage.

Memorials are suggested to Gideons International, Carthage Chapter.

Arrangements are with Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper.

William E. "Bill" Marshall

GOLDEN CITY, Mo. - William E. "Bill" Marshall, 76, Golden City, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2003, at Freeman Hospital West, Joplin.

Mr. Marshall was born Aug. 17, 1926, in Roswell, N.M. to Gates Ernest and Gussie B. Bodark Marshall. He moved to Golden City one year ago from Verden, Okla. He was self-employed horse trainer and a member of the American Quarter Horse Association. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Judy Smith on Aug. 10, 1977, in Walters, Okla. She survives.

Survivors include a son, Bill G. Marshall, Eufaula, Okla.; two daughters, Judy Dixon, Lawton, Okla., and Joyce Haxton, Cache, Okla.; a stepson, David Brown, Diamond and a stepdaughter, Gina Kilpatrick, Carthage, and eight grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, July 14 at Avilla cemetery. Officiating will be Dr. Bill G. Marshall.

Aletha Worley

FELTON, Calif. - Aletha Worley, 93, Felton, Calif., former Carthage resident, died on Sunday, July 6, 2003, at her home following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Worley was born Nov. 19, 1909, in Avilla, Mo., to W.F. Ziler Sr., and Ola McNabb Ziler.

She married Harry Worley, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Larry Worley, Ben Lomond, Calif.; a brother, W.F. Ziler, Carthage, a grandson and a great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Orville Ziler and Ollie Ziler, and a sister, Ola May Piercy.

Burial will be in Felton, Calif.

Mary Maxine Williams

Graveside services for Mary Maxine Williams, 81, Carthage, who died July 4, 2003, were held July 8 at Park cemetery, Carthage. The Rev. Bruce Bray officiated.

Services were under the direction of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.

Juanita "Bobby" Wheeler

LAMAR, Mo. - Juanita "Bobby" Mae Wheeler, 77, Lamar, died at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Freeman Hospital West, Joplin, following a short illness.

Mrs. Wheeler was born Feb. 25, 1926, in Lamount, Okla. to Jack and Faye Redding Crissup. She was a bookkeeper and of the Christian faith.

She married Robert Wheeler on July 13, 1947, in Golden City, Mo. He survives.

Additional survivors include two daughters, Pam Muse of Fenton, Mo., Belinda Adams, Peculiar, Mo.; a sister, Betty Rodebush, Lamar and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12 at Lohmeyer-Konantz Funeral Home, Lamar. Burial will be in Lake cemetery, Lamar.

Lela M. Bays

MOUNT VERNON, Mo. - Lela M. Bays, 81, Mount Vernon, died at 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield, after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Bays was born Jan. 14, 1922, in Greenfield, Mo. to Arvil and Ethel Breeding Wright. She has lived in Mount Vernon since 1968. She was raised in Barton County, Mo. She worked in the dietary department at Lawrence County Nursing Home and was a member of Pathways United Methodist Church in Alba.

She married George Washington Bays on Aug. 4, 1940, at Greenfield, Mo. He preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1989.

Survivors include two sons, Bob Bays, Jasper, and Don Bays, Mount Vernon; two daughters, Joan McMillan, Carthage, and Linda Bays, Mount Vernon; two grandsons, Dale Bays, Willmar, Minn. and Dan Bays, Jasper; a granddaughter, Sharon Elliott, Carthage; four great-granddaughters, one great grandson and one great-great-granddaughter.

Services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Daniel Funeral Home, Lamar. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens cemetery, Lamar.

Visitation will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Gary Houser

Gary Houser, 53, Carthage, died at 12:36 p.m. on Monday, July 14, 2003, at his home following a short illness.

Mr. Houser was born Feb. 5, 1949, in Iowa to Amon Paul Houser and Addie Mae Reynolds. He volunteered at the Joplin Community Clinic as a Spanish translator. He was a member of the Jehovah Witness of Carthage.

He married Georgia VanDeVen on Aug. 21, 1976, in Sheraton, Iowa. She preceded him in death on Feb. 16, 1996.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Cardwell and Rebekah Houser, both of Carthage; a sister, Sherry Twyman, Burlington, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dennis Houser.

The body was taken for cremation under the direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.

Services will be announced at a later date.

Lawson L. Sharp

JASPER - Lawson L. Sharp, 87, Jasper, died at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Sharp was born June 30, 1916, in Barton County, Mo., to Lewis A. and Phoebe J. Clark Sharp. He was a farmer, taught school in rural Barton County, co-owned and operated Sharp and Selvey Funeral Home from 1948 to 1955 and was the president of the Bank of Jasper for 17 years.

He was a member and deacon of Jasper Christian Church for many years; secretary and member of the Jasper Chamber of Commerce; member of the Jasper Masonic Lodge and the Jasper VFW Post 6415. He was a 1935 graduate of Lamar High School. He served in the Army Air Corp.

He was united in marriage to Frances Hammond on June 14, 1953, in Jasper. She survives.

Additional survivors include a sister, Pauline Selvey, Jasper; two nieces, Lois Dodson, Jasper and Martha Blount, Carthage; a nephew, Russell Selvey, Jasper; several great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 18 at Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper. Burial will be in Paradise cemetery, south of Jasper.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 17 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Jasper Christian Church or charity of choice.

Helen Irene Lee

LAMAR, Mo. - Helen Irene Lee, 84, Lamar, died at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Lakeview Healthcare, Lamar, following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Lee was born Nov. 21, 1918, in Barton County, Mo., to Thomas and Waire Kelly Shaw Sr. She was a homemaker and member of Grace Lutheran Church, Lamar.

She married Floyd Allen Lee on June 16, 1938, in Carthage. He preceded her in death on Sept. 22, 1977.

Survivors include two sons, Floyd Carroll and Tom Lee, both of Lamar, seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Jr. and Gene Ralph Shaw; a sister, Evalyn Patterson, a grandchild and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 19 at Grace Lutheran Church, Lamar. The body has been cremated. Burial will be at Lake cemetery under the direction of Lohmeyer-Konantz Funeral Home, Lamar.

Memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church.

Ida Mary Brumback

Services for Ida Mary Brumback, 95, Carthage, who died July 13, 2003, were held July 16 at Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel, Carthage. The Rev. Dr. S. Ray Crews officiated.

Music selections were "Beyond the Sunset" and "Shall We Gather at the River."

Burial was in Park cemetery, Carthage. Pallbearers were Roy Williams, Bruce Hansen, Randy Givens, David Robbins, Jerry Lindsey and Ed Hoffman.

Contributions are suggested to Christian Health Care Hospice, Joplin.

Fern Helen Kyger

GRANBY, Mo. - Fern Helen Kyger, 94, Granby, died at 12:10 a.m. today, July 17, 2003, at Granby House Nursing Home.

Arrangements are pending with Ulmer Funeral Home.

Virginia M. Filarski

SARCOXIE - Virginia Mae Filarski, 83, Sarcoxie, died at 1:55 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2003, at Sarcoxie Nursing Center, where she had been a patient.

Mrs. Filarski was born May 18, 1920, in Diamond. She was a homemaker.

She married Eddie Filarski on June 9, 1943, in Neosho. He preceded her in death on Nov. 4, 2002.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Lambeth, Sarcoxie and Alice Gibson, Carl Junction; a brother, Bernard Bryan, Joplin; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A sister, Ruth Devins, preceded her in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 22 at Housh Funeral Home Chapel, Sarcoxie, Larry Carlise, minister, will officiate. Burial will be in Sarcoxie cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Shane Booth, Jimmy Huff, Scott Lambeth, Mike Stokes, Terry Devins and Trevor Devins.
