Charles Lester Schratz, Sr.

Charles Lester Schratz, Sr. of Cuba, Missouri was born November 5, 1920 in Naylor, Missouri to the union of August John & Ida Mae Schratz (nee McKinney) and left from this life on June 6, 2006 in Rolla, Missouri at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 1 day.

He retired as a Machinist from Matco Machine Shop in 1981. He also had previously worked for Frisco Railroad.

Charlie was a member of Cuba United Methodist Church, Cuba Senior Center where he had served on the Board of Directors, Indian Hills Men’s Club (Past President), delivered Meals On Wheels, he enjoyed fishing and was known in the community as the “Town Comedian” or better known as “Chucklin Charlie.”

He is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Florine Schratz (nee Copeland); two brothers, Jewell and Marvin Schratz; two sisters, Mary Louise Barnett and Virginia Garrett.

Those who are left to mourn his passing are his wife, Dorothy “Dottie” Mahoney-Schratz; son, Charles L. Schratz, Jr.; three daughters, Sue (the late Mike) Benson, Judy (Jack) Goedeke and Jacque (Jack) Achurch; one sister, Margie Birch; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation was held Thursday, June 8, 2006 from 4-8 p.m. at Britton Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri

Funeral service was Friday, June 9, 2006 at 10 a.m. at Cuba United Methodist Church, Cuba, Missouri with Rev. Paul Lathum, officiating.

Interment Friday at 2 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, Affton, Missouri.

Harlin Pershing Scott

Harlin Pershing Scott was born to Mary D. and Luther W. Scott on June 24, 1913 at Goodwater, Missouri.

Harlin was married to Leava Cleo Gilliam Scott for 62 years.

During their life they resided in Goodwater, Missouri, St. Louis, Missouri and the Steelville, Missouri area the last 51 years.

Harlin retired from Missouri Department of Transportation in 1975 where he made many friends. He was a hard worker on his job, on his farm or any endeavor he undertook. Being a quiet man who loved his home and family, he was also a good provider and enjoyed serving up a bountiful table to all who happened to drop by.

He had many talents. One remarkable trait was the ability to toss a softball, skip a rock or write with either hand, equally.

He was a handsome young man who drove a spotless model A Ford on his way to woo the love of his life, Leava Cleo Gilliam. They were married November 20, 1942 in Ironton, Missouri. To this union was born one son, Lovell P. Scott, who presently resides in Moscow Mills, Missouri.

Also residing in Moscow Mills is his beloved grandson, James Pershing Scott; great grandson, Travis Scott; loving granddaughter, Kathy Rosler and husband Joe, who live in St. Charles, Missouri; and two sisters-in-law, Geneva Scott of Viburnum, Missouri and Eula Ogle of Sullivan, Missouri.

He will be affectionately remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, and brothers and sisters in Christ. He and Cleo were members of the Assembly of God Church in Steelville, Missouri. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Steelville, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cleo; brothers, Herbert and wife Bessie, Hershell, and Lawrence and wife Velma Scott; and sister, Grace Scott Stow.

Funeral services for Harlin Scott were held Friday, June 9, 2006 in the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Beers officiating. Special music of “How Great Thou Art” was sung by Rev. Thomas Slovensky with Jerry Beers accompanying. Music of “Beulah Land” was sung by Jerry Beers and Tom Slovensky.

Committal prayers and burial were in the Steelville cemetery.

All arrangements were under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home of Steelville, Missouri.

Sarah M. Bush

Sarah M. Bush, age 89, of the Holmstad in Batavia, Illinois, passed away on August 2, 2006 at Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva. She was born December 11, 1916 in St. Louis, Missouri, daughter of Walter and Viola (Beck) Bush.

Miss Bush was educated in the St. Louis public schools and elected to the High School National Honor Society. She entered military service in November 1942 and served during World War II as a WAC in the U.S. Army. She was a Signal Corps Cryptographer and was honorable discharged in 1945.

She earned a Bachelor’s degree in 1949, and her Master’s degree in 1954 from Washington University and was elected in Phi Beta Kappa. Sarah was granted three John Hay Fellowships in the Humanities during her teaching career, at the Yale University, Williams College and the University of Oregon. She received a Coe Foundation Fellowship in American Studies at DePauw University. She also studied graduate work at Northwestern University.

Her teaching career began in 1949 at Centralia Township High School and at the Junior College in Centralia, Illinois, where she taught for 10 years, followed by 12 years at Glenbard West and one year at Glenbard South High Schools in Glen Ellyn, Illinois prior to her retirement in 1973.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, International Society of Outstanding Women Educators since 1956; a member of the American Legion Post #522 in Cuba, Missouri since 1954; charter member of the WIMS (Women in Military Service for America) which sponsored the WIMS Memorial located at Arlington National cemetery; and a member of the National Illinois and local Retired Teachers Association since 1973.

Since 1949, she had made her home in Wheaton, Lombard, Glen Ellyn and finally in Batavia, where she resided at The Holmstad Retirement Community.

She enjoyed reading and composing poetry. Some of her poems were published in various newspapers and periodicals. Sarah was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. At the time of her death, she was a member of the United Methodist Church in Geneva, Illinois.

She is survived by her nine nieces and nephews, Viann (Bob) Brady, Delores (Jack) Harris, Walter (Dorothy) Hardesty, Betty (Larry) Babb, Al (Jeri) Heyer, Laura M. Heyer, Walter (Laura J.) Heyer, Ruth (Ron) Martin, and Carol Erickson; several great nieces and nephews; two cousins; many special friends, including Mr. and Mrs. John C. Shanklin and their family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth L. Joachim and Violette (Alfred) Heyer, a cousin, Alice Hoyer and by her devoted friend, Agnes K. Shanklin.

Memorial services were held earlier in Geneva, Illinois. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 2, 2006 at the Kinder cemetery in Cuba, Missouri.

Local arrangements were by the Hutson Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri.

Ezra Ditterline

Ezra Ditterline was born on March 24, 1916 and passed away peacefully on August 2, 2006 at his home in Bourbon, Missouri. He was born to the union of Ezra and Rose Irene (Bell) Ditterline. He was married to Gertrude Eunice Crowe in 1946 and she preceded him in death in 1974. One daughter, Eunice Irene was born to this union. He was married to his second wife, Gladys Svec in June of 1976 and she also passed away on October 13, 1986. From that time on he made his home with his daughter.

He is survived by his daughter, Eunice and husband, Steve Mallory; four grandsons, Allen, Tom, Jesse and Luke; eight great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren and numerous friends and acquaintances.

Ezra graduated from High School at Babylon, Long Island, New York. He held a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia and also held an engineering degree in Texas and New York.

He served his country during World War II and was in Hawaii on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He remained there, working for the government until the end of the war. He received several commendations and awards for meritorious service.

Ezra loved the outdoors and was very active in the Audubon Society. He was a Federal Bird Bander. He was an avid hunter, but hunted wildlife only with his camera.

When he was very young his parents took him to France and he spoke French as his first language. He loved to travel and already in 2006 he had been to Connecticut, Honduras, Texas and Virginia. He had just returned from a trip to New Orleans, Louisiana in July. He was a Charter Member of the Friendly Roamers R-V Camping Club.

He was a strong Christian, having served as Sunday School director at his church in Long Island. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Bourbon at the time of his passing.

His final request was to be cremated and buried at sea.

Gladys Lee

Gladys Myrtle Lee, age 86, of Cuba, Missouri passed away Monday, July 31, 2006 at Cuba Manor in Cuba, Missouri.

She was born September 22, 1919 in Bunker, Missouri to the late Luther and Myrtle Mead Story. She married Daniel Lee on January 24, 1970 in Mississippi. He preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Boyd Watkins; two brothers, Joseph and Bill Story; and two sisters, Audrey Reed and Bertha Kraft.

Surviving her are a son, Fred Mettlatch; a daughter, JoAnn Shapiro; three brothers, Carl Story and wife Evelyn of Hallsville, Missouri, Sam Story and wife Rosella of Gerald, Missouri and Bob Story and wife Juanita of Owensville, Missouri; a sister, Mary Branson and husband Larrence “Gib” of Owensville, Missouri; several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at Gottenstroeter Funeral Home with Rev. Ken Patterson officiating. Burial was in Countryside Memorial Gardens, Owensville, Missouri.

Darleen Nelda Saunders

Darleen Nelda Saunders of Leasburg, Missouri was born January 1, 1926 to the union of Albert Bruning and Geneva L. Lamkin at Rosemont, Illinois and left from this life on Saturday, August 5, 2006 at Sullivan, Missouri at the age of 80 years 7 months and 4 days.

Darleen was a graduate of Collinsville, Illinois High School. She had been a resident of Crawford County for many years. She was a charter member of the Leasburg Historical Society, member of the Leasburg A.T.A.C. and the First Baptist Church of Leasburg. Darleen was an avid gambler and enjoyed painting, crocheting and fishing.

She was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, great aunt, cousin and friend to many. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Darleen is preceded in death by her parents Albert and Geneva; one sister Clela McGuire and a host of other relatives and friends.

Those who are left to mourn her passing is her loving children, Jerry and wife Mary Ann Saunders of Dixon, Missouri and Terry and husband Richard Muir of Bourbon, Missouri; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother Larry and wife Mary Jane Bruning of Leasburg, Missouri; many nieces and nephews and friends.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at the Change of Heart Church of Cuba, Missouri on Thursday August 10, 2006 at 7 p.m. with Terry Mahurin and Matt Schaefer officiating.

The family was served by Britton Funeral Home, Cuba, Missouri.
