Herman Wilfong

PUXICO -- Herman E. Wilfong, 83, of McGee died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

Mr. Wilfong was born July 16, 1920, in Wayne County. He was the Wayne County Eastern District Commissioner for eight years and retired from the Department of the Interior's Mingo National Wildlife Refuge in 1976. He enjoyed his family, singing and taking care of his cattle.

On Nov. 20, 1941, he married Lois Wilfong. She survives.

Survivors include two sons, Herman Wilfong Jr. and Randy Wilfong, both of Wappapello; one daughter, Carolee Wilfong of McGee; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. today at Morgan-Sifford Funeral Home in Puxico. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ray Placher officiating. Burial will be in the Wilfong cemetery in Wappapello.

H.E. Bridgforth

CORNING, Ark. -- H.E. Hilly Bridgforth, 96, of Corning, Ark., died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould, Ark.

Mr. Bridgforth was born May 24, 1907, in Malden. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Corning, where he was a Deacon Emeritus. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Corning Lodge 719 and member of the Corning Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was past manager of ARK-MO Power Co. in Corning, retiring after 45 years of service with Entergy Corp. and its predecessor.

On Nov. 3, 1930, he married Reva Halford. She preceded him in death Sept. 8, 1994.

Survivors include one son, Joe Bridgforth of Navarre, Fla.; two brothers, H.B. Bridgforth of Rocky Mount and Harold Bridgforth of Flint, Mich.; two sisters, Wilma Sparks and Jennie Mae Lambath, both of St. Francis, Ark.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ermert Funeral Home in Corning. The funeral service will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Corning with the Rev. David Richey officiating. Burial will be in the Corning cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Corning or the charity of the donor's choice.

Laura Matthews

DEXTER -- Laura Matthews, 91, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at Fountainbleau Lodge in Cape Girardeau.

Mrs. Matthews was born Sept. 24, 1912, in Dexter. She was a former resident of Dexter, where she was a member of the Sadlers Chapel Methodist and United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Walnut Lane Extension Club and was a homemaker.

On May 17, 1931, she married Frank Cranston Matthews in Waterloo, Ill. He preceded her in death Nov. 9, 1983.

Survivors include one daughter, Marianne C. Sperling of Jackson; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Samuel Roethemeyer officiating. Burial will be in the Dexter cemetery.

Eddie Kearbey

Eddie Wayne Kearbey, 53, a respected contractor, roofer and lifelong resident of Poplar Bluff, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, of an apparent heart attack while on a hunting trip in Illinois.

Mr. Kearbey, the son of Pansy (Decker) Kearbey Luck of Poplar Bluff, and the late Homer Edward Kearbey, was born March 25, 1950, in Poplar Bluff. A contractor and roofer for over 30 years, he served as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam Conflict, where he was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon and the Rifle Marksman Badge. He was an avid bow hunter, fisherman and gardener.

Survivors include one son, Jeramie Wayne Kearbey and wife Julie of Poplar Bluff; one grandchild, Kendrick Wayne Kearbey of Poplar Bluff; five brothers, Donald Kearbey Sr., Leo Kearbey and James Luck, all of Poplar Bluff, Lawrence Luck of Columbia and Sherman Edward Kearbey of Columbus, Texas; one sister, Darlina Kearbey Tozzio of Joplin; a special companion and friend, Joyce Kearbey of Poplar Bluff; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel. Burial, with full military honors, will be in the Fairdealing cemetery.

Daniel Post

BASTROP, Texas -- Daniel Leo Post, 54, of Bastrop, Texas, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, in Waco, Texas. His death was sudden and unexpected.

Mr. Post was born July 30, 1949, in St. Louis. He was a 1969 graduate of Poplar Bluff High School. After graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force. Following his military service, he owned and operated Post Motor Company in Poplar Bluff before becoming employed with Morgan Buildings as a salesman based in Knoxville, Tenn. In 1986, he opened D. P. & A. Lamp and Shade in Poplar Bluff. He then went to work for Curtis Industries in 1991 before becoming employed as the Poplar Bluff salesman for Cook Portable Warehouse Inc. During his first year of employment with Cook, he earned the national salesman of the year award and was later promoted to dealer/manager status. He broke several sales records during his employment with Cook. His job required several relocations including Valdosta, Ga., in 1996; Grenada, Miss., in 2000; and Bastrop in 2003. While he resided in Poplar Bluff, he was active in the Rotary Club and he was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church in Grenada.

On July 16, 1988, he married Margaret Oppermann in Poplar Bluff. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, David Post who is stationed in Okinawa, Japan, with the U.S. Air Force and Andrew Post of the home; his stepmother, Geraldine Post Edwards of Georgia; two sisters, Judy Post of St. Louis and Susan Moore of Columbia; and four brother, Cyril Post of Lake St. Louis, Phillip Post of Denver, Bob Post of St. Louis and Bill Harwell of Dallas.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Bastrop. Memorials may be made to the Andrew Post Education Fund, c/o Lost Pines National Bank, P.O. Box 710, Bastrop, TX 78602.

Lester Barks

GREENVILLE -- Lester K. Barks, 87, of Poplar Bluff died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at Three Rivers Healthcare-North Campus.

Mr. Barks was born Jan. 25, 1916, in Chaonia. He was affiliated with the Baptist faith and was a former resident of Shook. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army and was a retired commercial carpenter.

On Jan. 15, 1938, he married Gusta Atnip. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Geneva Barks of Poplar Bluff and Glenda Fulcher of Newbern, N.C.; two brothers, Willard Barks of Poplar Bluff and Norman Barks of Piedmont; two sisters, Ruby Williams of Poplar Bluff and Imogene Barker of Neelyville; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Ruegg Funeral Home in Greenville. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Shiloh General Baptist Church in Shook with the Rev. William Fulcher officiating. Burial will be in the New Shiloh cemetery in Shook.

Arlia Wright Jr.

QULIN -- Arlia L. Wright Jr., 70, of Qulin died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at his residence.

Mr. Wright was born Sept. 29, 1933, in Clay County, Ark. He had been a resident of Qulin for all of his life. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Poplar Bluff where he served as a Deacon and a member of various committees. He was chairman at the Qulin Homecoming parade and was a member of the Rainey Church Farm Board in Dexter. He was also a MFA delegate for several years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean Conflict and was a retired farmer who had been active in several agricultural activities including lobbying in Washington, D.C., to release the rice allotments.

On March 14, 1953, he married Iris Prichard. She survives.

Other survivors include one son, Lee Wright and wife Rose of Qulin; his mother, Eva Wright of Poplar Bluff; one brother, Gordon Wright of Farmington Hills, Mich.; two grandchildren, Christopher Wright and Casey Wright; two uncles, Charles and Franklin Wright, both of Qulin; and three aunts, Iolene Gibbs of North Richland Hills, Texas, Sylvia Maddox of Phoenix, Ariz., and Helen Daffron of Clearbrook, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arlia L. Wright Sr.; and one sister, Anna Marie Brent.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at White-Sanders Funeral Home in Qulin. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Walter Simpson officiating. Burial will be in the Qulin cemetery with full military honors.

Memorials may be made to the St. Theresa School, Rt. 1 Box 369, Campbell, MO 63933.

Cynthia Cullum

HANNIBAL -- Cynthia Ann Dollens Cullum, 38, of Poplar Bluff died at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at her residence.

Mrs. Cullum was born Nov. 12, 1964, in Paducah, Ky. She was the daughter of Kenneth and Katheryne Metheny Dollens of New London.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Cullum of Poplar Bluff; one daughter, Jackie, of the home; and one sister, Pamela Sanders of New London.

No visitation is planned. A private graveside service is planned for a later date. James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal is in charge of arrangements.

Leland Ponder

DONIPHAN -- Leland Ponder, 88, of Gatewood died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at Current River Nursing Center in Doniphan.

Mr. Ponder was born July 25, 1915, in Peach Orchard, Ark. He was a member of the Tucker United Methodist Church and the Gatewood Volunteer Fire Department. He was a retired farmer who enjoyed woodworking.

In 1940, he married Jessie W. Pulliam at the Church of God in Doniphan. She preceded him in death in 1998.

Survivors include one stepsister, Frances Roberts of Doniphan; one sister-in-law, Nick Mammon of Gatewood; and one stepbrother, Arnold Ponder of Washington state.

Visitation will begin at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with Elaine Burrows officiating. Burial will be in the Doniphan City cemetery.

Nena Schneider

DONIPHAN -- Nena Shirley Schneider, 80, of Doniphan died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at Three Rivers Healthcare-North Campus in Poplar Bluff.

Mrs. Schneider was born Nov. 22, 1922, in Australia. She was a former resident of Torrance, Calif., and had been a resident of Doniphan for one year. She was a member of the West Point Pentecostal Church in Doniphan and was a retired saleswoman.

She was married to Edward Schneider who preceded her in death in May 2002.

Survivors include one son, Christopher R. Schneider of Doniphan; one daughter, Sherilyn Sue Shamber of Huntington Beach, Calif.; one sister, Jocelyn Eggins of Australia; one brother, Ronald Oakley of Australia; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the West Point Pentecostal Church with Pastor Charles Carr officiating. Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan is in charge of arrangements.
