Nell Little

BAYTOWN, Texas -- Nell Little, 70, of Baytown, Texas died Thursday, March 4, 2004, at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.

Mrs. Little was born April 30, 1933, at Steele and had been a resident of Poplar Bluff for 25 years before moving to Texas. She attended the First Baptist Church in Baytown. She and her husband moved to Baytown in 1978. In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling, gardening and watching the Rockets and Astros, but most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On Dec. 23, 1947, she married J. C. Little Jr. at Holland.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Meadows of Baytown and Brenda Gill of Dayton, Texas; one son, J.C. Little of Poplar Bluff; one brother, Paul Cisco; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at L.A. Crespo Funeral Directors in Baytown. The funeral service will be follow at 11 a.m. in the funeral chapel with Pastor Curtis Moyer officiating. Burial will be in the Palms cemetery in Dayton.

Joseph Greene

MALDEN -- Joseph O. Greene, 76, of Bernie died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at Crowley Ridge Care Center in Dexter.

Mr. Green was born Aug. 13, 1927, in Portageville. He was a member of the Bethany General Baptist Church in Campbell, where he taught Sunday School for several years. He received an associate degree in agriculture from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. He was a veteran and retired postmaster of the Bernie Post Office after 26 years and was also a retired farmer.

On Jan. 17, 1948, he married Della Lee Green at Piggott, Ark. She survives.

Other survivors include one daughter, Kathy Walker of Bernie; three sons, Kenneth J. Greene and Bruce W. Greene, both of Dexter, and Phillip B. Greene of Jackson; three sisters, Allie McCrory of Portageville, Doris Moody and Helen Preyer, both of Malden; one brother, Bill Green of Malden and eight grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Landess Funeral Home in Malden. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral chapel with the Rev. Bryan Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Bethany cemetery in Campbell.

Jane Heaton

Jane Heaton, 55, of Poplar Bluff died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at Three Rivers Healthcare-North.

Mrs. Heaton had worked as an office manager at Gregory Transportation. She was born Sept. 25, 1948, in St. Louis and was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, was an avid outdoors person and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

On Dec. 26, 1986, she was married to Bill Heaton in Clay County, Ark., and he survives. Also surviving are four children: Tony Metcalf of Dallas, Texas, Janea White of Poplar Bluff, Tony Heaton of Wappapello and Jamie Jenkins of Poplar Bluff; seven grandchildren, Rachel Metcalf, Hannah Metcalf, Shelly White, Michael Heaton, Casey Heaton, Shelby Heaton and Sarah Jenkins; her mother, Helen Black Johnson of Granite City, Ill.; and one sister, Judy Gordon of Granite City, Ill. Preceding her in death were her father, Ralph William Johnson, and a brother, Michael Johnson.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Cotrell Funeral Chapel. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Cecil Winberry officiating. Burial will be in the Qulin cemetery.

Gary Welty

BALL, La. -- Gary Allen Welty, 52, of Ball, La., formerly of Butler County, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at his home after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Welty was born Oct. 12, 1951, in Poplar Bluff and was of the Baptist faith. He was a 1970 graduate of Poplar Bluff High School and lived about half of his life in Butler County, where he was employed as a butcher at Snider's IGA. He had lived in Louisiana the past 20 years, where he was self-employed.

He was married to Twyla Welty of Ball. She survives.

Other survivors include his mother and stepfather, Aloyce Mayberry Barnhill and James Barnhill, of Poplar Bluff; his father, Clyde Welty of Poplar Bluff; two sisters, Sherry Rush and husband, Charles, of Poplar Bluff, and Vicky Hoover and husband, Gary, of Warrenton; and one nephew, Scott Rush of Fort Benning, Ga.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Qulin cemetery.

Todd Moffitt

CAMPBELL -- Todd Moffitt, 25, of Campbell died Sunday Feb. 8, 2004, at Campbell.

Mr. Moffitt was born Nov. 29, 1978, in St. Louis. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion and the FFA, and was employed as a truck driver.

Survivors include one daughter, Allison Moffitt of St. Francis, Ark.; his parents, Stanley L. Moffitt and Kim K. Smith Moffitt, both of Campbell; his stepmother, Connie Moffitt of Campbell; his grandfather, Dalton L. Moffitt of Campbell; and three sisters, Carrie Moffitt Reeves of Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, Heather Moffitt of Campbell and Abbey Moffitt of the United States Navy stationed in Guam.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Landess Funeral Home in Campbell. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Gary Hancock officiating. Burial will be in the New Hope cemetery in Pollard, Ark.

Eli P. Armes

DONIPHAN -- Eli P. Armes, 61, of Doniphan died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at the Hunter Acres Healthcare in Sikeston.

Mr. Armes was born April 26, 1942, at Doniphan. A 1961 graduate of Doniphan High School, he was a member of the Fairview Church of God Faith of Abraham in Doniphan. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he retired from McDonnell-Douglas. He enjoyed art and won a 13- state art contest in high school.

Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Phillips and Evelyn Seals, both of Vandilla, Ill., and one brother, Ted Armes of Walnut Ridge, Ark.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Doniphan, followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. with Bro. Ted Armes officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Church of God cemetery.

Helen Smothers

BERNIE -- Helen "Tudy" Smothers, 77, of Florissant died Feb. 1, 2004, at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Miss Smothers was born Nov. 18, 1926, at Bernie and was a former resident of Bernie. She was a retired telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone.

Survivors include one sister, Lucille Quinn of Aurora and two brothers, Edward Smothers of Dexter and Bill Smothers of Florissant.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in the Ash Hill cemetery at Fisk.

Virgie Dowdy

MALDEN -- Virgie Marie Dowdy, 90, of St. Louis died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at her daughter's residence in St. Louis.

Mrs. Dowdy was born June 6, 1913 at Coweta, Okla. and was a former resident of Malden. She was a member of the Malden Church of God and a homemaker.

On Dec. 16, 1932, she married Hershle Dewey Dowdy at Bloomfield. He preceded her in death Nov. 24, 1985.

Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Cartt and Sharon Dowdy, both of St. Louis and Iona Bates of Rome, Ga.; three sons, Wendell Dowdy of Festus, Dawsey Dowdy of Russellville and Jimmy Dowdy of Granite City, Ill.; one sister, Matilda Dowdy of Malden; two brothers, John Jones of Victoria, Australia and Sam Jones of Piggott, Ark.; 26 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Landess Funeral Home in Malden. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the funeral chapel with the Rev. James Wampler officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park cemetery in Malden.

Lillian W. Faulkner

Lillian W. Faulkner, 83, of Portland, Maine, died Thursday, Jan., 15, 2004, at Mercy Hospital.

She was born in Ellsinore on May 31, 1920, and lived with her grandparents, George and May Julian in Williamsville. She and her sister Anna moved to Poplar Bluff for her last two years of high school.

She married her childhood sweetheart, Lt. Claud H. Faulkner, on March 7, 1942. He preceded her in death on Feb. 29, 2000. While he served in World War II she worked for a St. Louis insurance company. When her husband returned from World War II, they moved to Maine where they owned and operated the Willowdale Golf Club in Scarborough, Maine, until 1976 when they retired and moved to Florida. She and her sister Lillian returned to Poplar Bluff for Lillian's class reunion and decided to return to Poplar Bluff to live, and built a home in the Lynnwood Subdivision, which is close to Westwood Hills Country Club, where her husband was on the Club board.

Faulkner is survived by her son David of Maine, her sister Anna Miller of California, and two grandsons.

Memorial donations can be sent to Hospice of Maine of to the Alzheimer Association of Maine.

Bertha H. Wiseman

Bertha Hafford Wiseman, 78, of Poplar Bluff died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Three Rivers Healthcare-North Campus.

Mrs. Wiseman was born Dec. 17, 1925, in Knobel, Ark. She attended the First Assembly of God Church, and was retired from the Florsheim Shoe Company. She enjoyed embroidering and sewing.

In 1942, she married Paul Morgan Hafford. He preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 1995. Her parents, Orville and Addie Foster and a son, Eldon Paul Hafford also preceded her in death. On May 27, 1998, she married Ernest Wesley Wiseman in Corning, Ark. He survives.

Survivors include one son, Larry Hafford and friend, Mary Osborn, of Poplar Bluff; three daughters, Carolyn Burkeen and husband, Bill, of Bowling Green, Ky., Ann Lee and friend, Larry Rogers, of Poplar Bluff and Evelyn Weaver and husband, Glen, of Clarkton; one daughter-in-law, Sharon Hafford of Poplar Bluff; 12 grandchildren, Theresa Gulledge, Steven Hafford, Tony Hafford, Cassie Smith, Christy Weaver, Larry Hafford Jr., Lee Hafford, April Rice, Lisa Coyle, Brian Burkeen, Rodney LeGrand and Jennifer Ziegler; and several great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral chapel, with Rev. Rick White officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens cemetery.
