Fred Fritsch

FISK -- Fred J. Fritsch, 81, a 30 year resident of Fisk died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.

Mr. Fritsch was born Sept. 20, 1923, at Pilot Knob. A member of the Twin Rivers General Baptist Church, he was an avid fisherman and hunter. In the 1940's, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Later, he worked at Independent Packing Company in St. Louis for 20 years. After moving to Fisk, he worked at Arvin Automotive in Dexter for 14 years.

On Aug. 28, 1971, he married Ethel Hicks. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Vicki Lynn Dochnal of High Ridge and Kim Anderson of Wentzville; two sons, Freddie Fritsch of St. Louis and Ron Fritsch of Cahokia, Ill.; one brother, Ed Douglas of Ballwin; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will begin at noon Saturday at White-Sanders Funeral Home in Fisk. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Fred Applegate officiating. Burial will be at the Brown Chapel cemetery.

Dorotha Grant

WEST PLAINS --Dorotha Elene Grant, 80, of West Plains died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at the Ozarks Medical Center.

Mrs. Grant was born June 10, 1924, at Medill. She was a longtime member of the Little River Missionary Baptist Church and had attended Shilo Baptist Church in Rover.

On June 7, 1942, she married Bryce Heuble Grant at Arbyrd. He preceded her in death Aug. 29, 1997.

Survivors include three children, Kathy Estes of Poplar Bluff, Nathan Grant of Batesville, Ark., and Malcolm Grant of Rover; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bernice Parker of Stillwater, Okla.

Visitation will be from noon-2 p.m. Saturday at Cobb Funeral Home in Blytheville, Ark. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Manila cemetery in Manila, Ark.

Robertson-Drago Funeral Home in West Plains is in charge of the local arrangements.

Willis Conner

DEXTER -- Willis Conner, 85, of Dexter died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, in the emergency room of Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter.

Mr. Conner was born July 17, 1919, at Dexter. A United States Army veteran, having served in World War II, he was the former owner of Willis Conner Insurance and Real Estate. For 35 years, he was also the Mayor of the City of Dexter. Mr. Conner was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dexter, the Dexter Kiwanis Club, the Kenady-Hanks Post 59, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

On July 5, 1939, he married Marie Culbertson at Piggott, Ark. She preceded him in death on Dec. 4, 1983. Later, on April 26, 1985, he married Vanita Boone at Dexter. She preceded him in death on Dec. 29, 2003.

Survivors include two daughters, Sue Kneale of Oregon, Mo., and Carol Wilcox of San Francisco; one son, David Conner of San Francisco; one stepdaughter, Leslie Palmer of Syracuse, Ind.; two stepsons, Jim Boone of Dexter and David Boone of Batesville, Ark.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter. The funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Fred Leist officiating. Burial will be at the Hagy cemetery.

Orvil King

DEXTER -- Orvil R. King, 87, of Essex died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at the Beverly Health and Rehab Center in Bloomfield.

Mr. King was born Dec. 6, 1916, at Jerusalem, Ark. A United States Army veteran, he served for three years as a combat infantryman in WWII and was a member of an 81 millimeter mortar crew in the 38th Division. Mr. King had been a saw mill operator with the Himmelburger-Harrison Co. in Morehouse and was a member of the Olive Branch General Baptist Church near Essex.

In July 1955, he married Edith Byrd at St. Louis. She preceded him in death on Dec. 3, 1999.

Survivors include one daughter, Myrna Jones of Paragould, Ark.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Glenys Duckworth officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Essex cemetery.

James Hobbs

DEXTER -- James A. "Jay" Hobbs, the son of the late Frank and Hazel Hargrove Hobbs, was born in Dudley on June 21, 1923, and passed away at the Puxico Nursing Center in Puxico with family and friends at his bedside on Nov. 25, 2004, at the age of 81 years, five months and four days.

Mr. Hobbs had lived in California for 40 years before moving to Puxico in 1993. He had owned and operated J & Bills Tires in California until his retirement. He attended Hobbs Chapel Church near Puxico and was a life member of the Puxico V.F.W. Post. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, served during WWII and reached the rank of Sergeant. He enjoyed making wood crafts.

On Sept. 8, 1940, he was married to Anna Helen Trent at Mingo. She preceded him in death on Nov. 30, 2002.

Surviving are one daughter, Jayan VanBergen of St. Louis; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mable McGowen of Dudley, Snoe Shockley of Arnold, Melba Ifland of Arnold and Wanda Nash of Dexter. Other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Sue Landon in 1997; one grandson, Gary Tennyson; two brothers, Bert and Forrest Hobbs.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Puxico.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at 10 a.m. in the Hobbs Chapel Church near Puxico with Rev. Catherine Coty of Poplar Bluff officiating.

Interment will be in the Hobbs Chapel cemetery near Puxico with full military rites. Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Puxico in charge of arrangements. Donations may be made to Hobbs Chapel cemetery.

Robert Richardson

DEXTER -- Robert "Bob" Richardson, 57, of Fisk, formerly of Dexter and Puxico, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.

Mr. Richardson was born Aug. 23, 1947, at Portageville. He had worked on the farms for Tyson foods for 20 years.

On June 18, 1983, he married Nancy Strickler at Williamsport, Ind. She survives.

Other survivors include five daughters, Annalee Syx of Dowagiac, Mich., Beverly Scott, Dixie Crumbliss and Sharon Strickler, all of Puxico, and Cathy Chamberlain of Dexter; four sons, Craig Strickler, Chris Strickler and Michael Richardson, all of Dexter, and Shane Strickler of Ft. Polk, La.; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Linda Anderson of Attica, Ind.; and two brothers, Herbert Watkins of Puxico and Marvin Richardson of Liberal, Kan.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. The funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Bob Richmond officiating. Burial will be at the Hagy cemetery in Dexter.

Betty Johnson

Betty Faye Johnson, 50, of Poplar Bluff died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Miss Johnson was born April 26, 1954, at Calhoun City, Miss. A retired housekeeper for Holiday Inn, she attended the Lively Stone Church of God in Poplar Bluff. She enjoyed spending time with her family and playing with her cats.

Survivors include two daughters, Natoya Olivia Johnson of Parma and Iris Deanne Johnson of Poplar Bluff; her mother, Lela (Marshall) Crusoe of Parma; five sisters, Minnie Marshall and husband, David, and Barbara Nelson and husband, Donald, all of Poplar Bluff, Shirley Waters of Parma, Luzet Hill of New Madrid and Katherine Johnson of Baton Rouge, La.; four brothers, Roger Johnson and wife, Sandra, of Poplar Bluff, Robert Crusoe of Houston, Henry Crusoe and wife, Toni, of Quantico, Va., and John Henry Johnson and wife, Vicki, of McComb, Miss.; three grandchildren, Payton Deanne Johnson, Kaelib Marcellus Moore and Mya Danielle Johnson; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Roger William Johnson; one granddaughter, Lela Christian Moore; and two brothers, Roger Johnson and Paul Johnson.

Visitation will begin at noon Monday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. James Price officiating. Burial will be at the City cemetery in Poplar Bluff.

George Dewey Winters Jr.

George Dewey Winters Jr., 71, of Poplar Bluff died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

Mr. Winters was born Sept. 1, 1933, at Poplar Bluff. He retired in 1989, after 35 years of service with McDonnell-Douglas Corp. in St. Louis as a Tool & Die Maker. During his employment, he was involved with the development of both the Mercury and Gemini Space Programs. He acquired many commendations through his years of dedication. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served seven years, including service in the Korean War. His military commendations include the Good Conduct Medal, Marksman and the Army of Occupation Medal. He was a member of the Temple Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff, and he enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting and fishing.

On June 8, 1957, he married Barbara Sue Dicken in Hernando, Miss. She survives.

Other survivors include one daughter, Honda Huster and husband, Dean, of Harviell; one son, Thomas Winters and wife, Debbie, of Poplar Bluff, six siblings, Mary Helen Hargrove of Memphis, Tenn., Betty Richardson of Dallas, Texas, Peggy Sinden of Manchester, Bob Winters, M.L. "Satch" Winters and Barbara Sue Winters, all of Poplar Bluff; three grandchildren, Hilary Taylor and husband, Josh, Kyle West and Cameron West, all of Poplar Bluff; and one great-grandson, Aaron Taylor of Poplar Bluff.

He was preceded in death by his parents George Dewey and Edna Murdock Winters.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at Cotrell Funeral Chapel. The funeral service will begin at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Steve Patterson officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Dicken cemetery in Butler County.

Edsel Edwards

DEXTER -- Edsel Edwards, 78, of rural Bloomfield, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.

Mr. Edwards was born on Feb. 1, 1926, near Bloomfield. He had been a member of the Bloomfield Masonic Lodge 153 for more than 50 years and a United States Army Air Corps veteran. He had worked as a mechanic for Sigler Chevrolet in Dexter, a truck driver for Duty Trucking Company in Bloomfield and an employee at Mayo Feed Mill in Bloomfield. He had also served as sheriff of Stoddard County from 1969 to 1972.

On Dec. 24, 1947, he married Helen Tiller at Piggott, Ark. She survives.

Other survivors include one son, Larry Edwards of Mansfield, Ohio; two brothers, Harvey and Bryce Edwards, both of Flint, Mich.; one sister, Delma Obards of Bloomfield and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral will begin at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Lambert officiating. Burial will be at Missouri Veterans cemetery in Bloomfield.
