Lura Lee Mills

Lura Lee Cook Mills, daughter of the late Jess Lee Cook and Neeley Cook, was born on May 26, 1921, at Bernie and died in the Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau on March 26, 2003, at the age of 81. Mrs. Mills was a retired school teacher and had taught at St. Louis Public Schools, Broseley Public Schools and Bernie Public Schools. She was also a librarian and was founder of the Three Rivers Community College Library in Poplar Bluff and had worked there until her retirement. She was a member of the Bethany General Baptist Church of rural route, Campbell. She was united in marriage to Wendell Warren Mills on Aug. 18, 1955, at Broseley. He preceded his wife in death on July 12, 2002. Survivors include one son, Glenn Mills of Birmingham, Ala.; one sister, Harriet Cook of Poplar Bluff; two grandchildren, Barry Mills and Amanda Mills; and four great-grandchildren, Bradley Mills, Mackenzie Mills, Preston Mills and Brodie Mills. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. today, Friday, March 28, 2003, at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie with Dawsey Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany Cemetery, Rural Route, Campbell.

Maryann McMillian

Maryann McMillian, the daughter of Bill and Mary Carman Provance, was born on July 14, 1931, in Clarkton and died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau at the age of 71. She first worked as a medical secretary for Anderson Air Activities and later worked as a bookkeeper for Malden Implement for 35 years. She was a charter member of the Malden Business and Professional Women's Club and a member of the First General Baptist Church located in Malden. On April 8, 1950, she was united in marriage to Bill McMillian at Piggott, Ark. Survivors include her husband, Bill McMillian of Malden; one daughter, Barbara Matlock of Festus; one son, Scott McMillian of Malden; three grandchildren; and three brothers, Sonny Provance of Malden, Charles Provance of Clarkton, and Tom Provance of Campbell. Visitation was held from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2003, at Landess Funeral Chapel in Malden. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2003, at First General Baptist Church in Malden with Rev. Scott Keller officiating. Interment followed in Rosewood First Addition Cemetery in Malden.

Burnadetta M. McIntyre

Burnadetta M. McIntyre, 82, of Bell City, was born Nov. 4, 1920, at Polo, Ill., the daughter of the late Paul and Elsie Pulver Easterbrook, and died Friday, March 21, 2003, at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter. She had been an inspector at Ralph Edwards Sportswear in Cape Girardeau. She was a member of the New Life Tabernacle Church in Bell City for 51 years. On Oct. 16, 1938, she and Leonard Joe McInture were united in marriage at Piggott, Ark., and he preceded her in death in 1971. Survivors include seven sons, Raymond McIntyre of Mounds, Ill., Bobby McIntyre of Vanduser, Dennis McIntyre of Gipsy, Darrell McIntyre of Cape Girardeau, Darris McIntyre, Leroy McIntyre and Curtis McIntyre, all of Bell City; four daughters, Merel Greer of Sikeston, Barbara Myers of Dexter, Sharon Coleman and Esther Abbott, both of Bell City; two brothers, Glen Easterbrook of Morongo Valley, Calif., and Junior Easterbrook of Marshall, Minn.; 25 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two sons, a daughter, a sister, three brothers, and two grandchildren. Visitation was held from 4:30-8 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2003, at Morgan Funeral Home in Advance. Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2003, at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance with Rev. Tim Hall officiating. Interment followed in Gravel Hill Cemetery near Bell City.

Gean Atteberry

Gean Atteberry was born in Alabama on June 28, 1908, and died Saturday, March 22, 2003, in Bloomfield at the age of 94. Mr. Atteberry retired from General Motors Company in Michigan in 1963. After retirement, he moved to Arkansas, but for the past eight years he had been a resident of Bloomfield. On April 27, 1927, he was married to Hattie Hawn. She preceded him in death on March 21, 2000. Eight sisters and five brothers also preceded him in death. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, March 24, 2003, at Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Cotus James officiating. Interment followed in the Gravel Hill Cemetery near Bloomfield.

Naomi Paul Goldsmith

Naomi Paul Goldsmith, the daughter of Green Paul and Minnie Karlish Paul, was born Oct. 1, 1924, in Malden, and died at her residence in Malden Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at the age of 78. On March 11, 1942, she was united in marriage to Leslie E. Goldsmith who preceded her in death on May 30, 2000. She was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed genealogy research in her spare time. Survivors include two daughters, Kathie Owens of Dexter and Gail Bryan of Spring, Texas; three sons, L.E. Goldsmith of Yukon, Okla., John Goldsmith of Malden, and Tim Goldsmith of Nixa; 12 grandchildren; three brothers, Chris Paul and Albert Paul, both of Springfield, and Oshal Paul of Ft. Smith, Ark.; and one sister, Colleen Romero of Yucca Valley, Calif. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Van Paul, Donald Cochran and Hubert Paul. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. today Friday, March 21, 2003, at Landess Funeral Chapel in Malden. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Landess Funeral Chapel in Malden with Rev. Scott Keller officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Malden.

Mildred Bennett

Mildred Bennett, the daughter of the late Edward and Martha Christian Whitledge was born in Bloomfield on October 1, 1919 and died at Three Rivers Healthcare in Poplar Bluff on March 16, 2003 at the age of 83 years. Mrs. Bennett had spent her life in the Bloomfield Community. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bloomfield and retired as a cook from Bloomfield Public School. She was married to Jewell Bennett, he preceded her in death on April 15, 1978. Three brothers and three sisters also preceded her in death. Survivors include one son, Gary Bennett of Springfield, Mo.; one brother, Jay Whitledge of Bloomfield; two granddaughters; and one great grandson. Friends may call at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield on Wednesday, March 19 from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the Chiles-Cooper Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Ken Powers officiating. Interment will follow in the Walker Cemetery near Bloomfield.

Elizabeth Wondel

Elizabeth Wondel, 88, of Painton, was born July 29, 1914, at Delta, the daughter of the late Charles and Rosie Welker Surface, and died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. She was a homemaker and a member of the Arbor General Baptist Church. On Nov. 2, 1932, she and Emory Wondel were united in marriage at Benton, and he preceded her in death on April 16, 1987. Survivors include four sons, Emory L. Wondel of Wright City, Walter Wondel of Warrenton, Donald Wondel of Painton, and Ronald Wondel of O'Fallon; two daughters, Betty McKee of Painton and Evelyn Italiano of St. Charles; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. A son, a granddaughter, four sisters and three brothers also preceded her in death. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance with Bro. Bob Bradford officiating. He will be assisted by Bro. Kermet Patton. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Gardens at Morley.

Nova J. Jones

Nova Jean Jones, the daughter of the late Enoch and Lena Shaw Pedigo, was born in Republic on Sept. 20, 1924, and died Friday, March 28, 2003, at the Cypress Point Healthcare in Dexter at the age of 78. Mrs. Jones had lived in Dexter all her life. She was employed at the Dexter Hospital for many years and also worked for the Dexter Police Department. She was a charter member of the Faith Fellowship Church in Dexter. On Sept. 5, 1975, she was married to Gilbert L. Jones. He preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1986. Mrs. Jones is survived by one sister, Pansy Forkum of Zalma. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Georgia Bell Pedigo and Irene Whitaker. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until service time today, Sunday, March 30, 2003, at the Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in Dexter. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2003, in the Watkins & Sons Chapel in Dexter with the Rev. Karen Oldham of Dexter officiating. Interment will follow in the Hagy Cemetery in Dexter. Watkins & Sons Funeral Service of Dexter is in charge of all arrangements.

Eula James

Eula Marie James, 67, of McGee, was born Jan. 18, 1936, at McGee, the daughter of Lillie VanMatre Wills and the late Clarence Wills, died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of the Brush Creek Missionary Baptist Church of Zalma. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary of Puxico. On Jan. 24, 1953, she and Hubert James were united in marriage at McGee, and he preceded her in death on April 8, 1999. Survivors include her mother, Lillie Wills of McGee; two brothers, Alfred Wills of Patterson and Bill Wills of McGee; five sisters, Mary Hill of Granite, Ill., Louise Lafferty of Bloomfield, Lorene Williams, Wanda Rodgers and Norma VanMatre, all of Advance. A son, David James, and a sister preceded her in death. Visitation will be held from 4:30-8 p.m. today, Friday, March 28, 2003, at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance with Bro. Bill Sargent officiating and assisted by Bro. Lonnie Clubb. Interment will follow at Brush Creek Cemetery near Zalma.
