His father, also Eugene R. Siebold, was an engineer for Anheuser-Busch his entire career in St. Louis. His mother, Francis (Fanny) was a full time employee of the Woolworth Co. in downtown St. Louis. At that time, it was quite progressive for a woman to work outside the home full time. Because his parents were working full time, Gene was raised by his grandfather who was a master baker. They lived in an apartment over the bakery on Demun Avenue. Gene attended Washington University and received his bachelor’s degree in civil (structural) engineering. His parents wouldn’t let him go away to school—he had to live at home. He was an only child. Gene began his career in the Army Corp of Engineers for two years serving in Virginia. When he returned to St. Louis he was hired by Leslie Bergmeier who in 1947 had founded a local structural engineering firm. He became a partner and the firm was then Bergmeier and Siebold. They took a third partner in John Sydow making the company name Bergmeier, Siebold, and Sydow. By 1973, Les Bergmeier had died and the firm took on it’s final partner in Alan Elfanbaum becoming Siebold, Sydow, and Elfanbaum (SSE) which it still is today at it’s present location in Kirkwood. As president and CEO of SSE, Gene was involved in many interesting local and national projects. In total, Gene held design responsibility for over 3000 projects and was licensed as a professional engineer in 17 states. In St. Louis, some of the projects he and his firm designed are Anheuser-Busch Corporate Headquarters, St. Luke’s Hospital West, St. John’s Mercy Hospital, Missouri Baptist Hospital, Delmar Gardens in Chesterfield, the McDonnell-Douglas Flight Simulator Building, Chrysler Corporation, Westport Plaza, and Northwest Plaza. He designed and/or oversaw the design of the Washington University Sports Complex that incorporates the renovated stadium from the 1904 Olympics, the 6500 seat Field House for UMSL, Christian Bros. College Gymnasium, the complete campus of Flo Valley Community College, Lindbergh Senior High School, and state of the art housing for gorillas at the zoo. Gene was often requested to serve as an expert witness in cases involving structural failures. One particularly public case was the collapse of the interior cat walks in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City in the 1980s. It was charged that the structural design was deficient and Gene testified at the hearing as an expert witness on that structural design. Ultimately the engineer who designed the cat walks was found liable for the design and structural failure and is no longer in business. Gene was involved in civic work in Warren County for most of the 20 years that he lived in Innsbrook, MO. He was chairman of the Warren County Planning and Zoning Commission, Architect Liason representative for the Warren County Criminal Justice Center, and Warren County Administrator for FEMA Flood Control. He also served as building commissioner for Innsbrook Estates. Gene was married for 61 years to Jean Ann (Striler), has 5 children, 12 grandchildren, (one who is in the Navy stationed in Hawaii), and 2 great grandchildren.
