Bell, Earl Edward "Eddie"

Eddie Bell of Sullivan, MO, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2008 at the age of 73 years.

Eddie was born September 28, 1935 to the late Earl and Minnie (Nethington) Bell at Sullivan, Missouri. On December 12, 1953 he was united in marriage to Shirley Door and three sons, Don, Joe and Jon were born to their marriage. Eddie was employed by the former Meramec Mining Company until it closed. He then drove a truck for M.F.A. Propane until he retired. Eddie enjoyed playing baseball and coaching Little League. He loved the outdoors and liked to hunt and fish. But the most important thing in his life was his wife, Shirley and his family. His grandchildren were the joy of his life. Eddie was baptized on May 2, 1976 at First Baptist Church of Stanton.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Bell Sullivan, three sons, Don Bell and wife, Linda, Joe Bell and wife, Laura, and Jon Bell and wife, Natalie all of Sullivan, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Marie Mazar of St. Louis, MO, special friends, Bubba and Deborah of Ava, MO other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Mr. Bell was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Bell.

It was Eddie’s desire to be cremated. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home.

Bartel, Dora Jewell

Dora Jewell Bartel of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at the age of 82 years.

Jewell was born December 25, 1925 at Fletcher, Missouri to John Walter and Josie (Hines) Cross. On August 25, 1942 she was united in marriage to Lee C. Briggs and to this union two daughters were born. This marriage ended in the death of Lee on December 18, 1967. In 1972, she was married to William H. Bartel and together spent many hours camping and traveling to Florida and Texas and various Missouri campgrounds. Mr. Bartel preceded Jewell in death in April of 2001. She remained very active at Meramec Valley Baptist Church and enjoyed quilting, embroidery work, knitting and tending her flower garden.

She is survived by 5 grandchildren; Shellie Camp, Carma Smith, Jason Slezak, Alex Pennock and Rob Bartel; 5 great-grandchildren; Jesse and Josh Camp, Wyatt Smith, Lacie and Hannah Slezak; a former son-in-law; Joe Pennock, whom she loved as her own; other relatives and friends.

Along with her parents and two former husbands, Jewell was preceded in death by her daughters, Carolyn Pennock and Kathy Matlock.

Funeral services were conducted 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 5, 2008 from Meramec Valley Baptist Church with Pastors Richard & Erik Williams officiating. Interment was in Oddfellows Memorial Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Meramec Valley Baptist Church.

Barber, Eleanor Louella Diehl

Eleanor L. Barber of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2008 at the age of 84 years.

Eleanor was born on May 10, 1924 at Elgin, North Dakota to the late Adolph and Emma Lydia (Hintz) Sprenger. She was a resident of the Elgin area many years and, for a time, taught school before her marriage to Clinton Diehl in December of 1945. Eleanor and Clinton raised 12 children on a small farm near Elgin and after moving from the farm she later became a custodian and worked in various places which included a furniture store, funeral home, the local school and her church. Eleanor later took courses in Health Sciences and became a home health nurse until moving to Sullivan, Missouri. She was known as a generous and giving individual who had a patient disposition. She made sure her children and those around her knew of the plan of Salvation and also taught the Bible and its wondrous stories to her family. Music was also an important part of her life and she was an accomplished auto harpist. Eleanor was a member of Hope Conservative Congregational Church in Elgin and after the death of her husband Clinton in July of 1984, moved to Sullivan, Missouri where she became a devoted member of Temple Baptist Church. She often volunteered to help with vacation bible school and was involved in other various activities at the church. In March of 1994, Eleanor was united in marriage to Pallard Barber and he too, preceded her in death in August of 2005.

She is survived by twelve children; Kevin Diehl and wife Cynthia of the state of Kansas, Mark Diehl and wife Karen of Sullivan, Missouri, Sandy Diegel and husband Cal of the state of Virginia, Shirley DeLapp and husband Dan of the state of Washington, Sharon Doyle and husband Harvey of Sullivan, Missouri, Bonnie Stephens and husband Tom of the state of Colorado, Patsy Otto and husband Glen of the state of Montana, Arlette Gunsch and husband Dennis of the state of North Dakota, LaVonne Martelle and husband Fred of the state of Washington, Marcella Beers and husband Mike of Sullivan, Missouri, Ruby Armitage and husband Dave of the state of Colorado, Karla Staiger and husband Rodney of the state of North Dakota; a step-son, Paul Barber and wife Robin of Sullivan, Missouri; six brothers, Frederick, Aldon, Paul, Glen, Larry and Harvey Sprenger; one sister, Esther Will; 37 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Along with those previously mentioned, Eleanor was preceded in death by one grandson, Nathaniel Otto; a great-grandson, Christian Omoresemi; two brothers, Ervin and Almore Sprenger and three sisters, Viola and Ruth Sprenger and Loretta Vetter.

Funeral services were conducted 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 19, 2008 from Temple Baptist Church in Sullivan with Pastor Scott Perry officiating and then on Wednesday, May 21st at 11:00 a.m. at the Hope Conservative Congregational Church in Elgin, North Dakota with Pastor Frederick Sprenger officiating. Interment was in Hope Congregational Cemetery, Elgin, North Dakota. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Association in the name of Eleanor Barber.

Bailey, Conner Lee

Conner Lee Bailey of Sullivan, MO, passed away Friday, October 3, 2008 at the age of one month three weeks.

Conner was born August 12, 2008 to Justin and Tracie (Stringer) Bailey at Sullivan, Missouri. Although he wasn’t on this earth very long, Conner was loved and cherished and will forever remain in the hearts of his parents, grandparents and extended family. Forever in the arms of Jesus, Conner will be watching out for his family from Heaven.

He is survived by his parents, Justin and Tracie (Stringer) Bailey of Sullivan, grandparents, Kathy Wehmeyer of Sullivan, Carol Stringer of Leasburg, David King of Cuba, great-grandparents, Charles and Jane Peacock of Union, Beatrice Anderson of Sullivan, aunts and uncles, Cassandra Wehmeyer, Franciso Contreras, Cindy Francis, Stacy and Larry Hawkins, Kayla Stringer, Josh Wehmeyer, Tabby Lampky, Jason and Ericka Bailey, Damon and Tracie Dotson, and Darren and Linda Dotson, other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were conducted 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at Bourbon Cemetery, Bourbon, MO. Rev. Thomas Smith officiated. In lieu of flowers donations may be given for the purchase of a headstone in memory of Conner. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home.

Bacon, Shirley Rose Ann

Shirley Rose Ann Bacon of Sullivan, MO, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2008 in her home at the age of 71 years.

Shirley was born in St. Louis County on August 23, 1937 to Arnold and Viola (Schuettenberg) Fink and was one of five children. She married Donald K. Bacon on February 23, 1957 in Chesterfield, Missouri. She lived her early life in Creve Coeur, Missouri and after marriage moved to Florissant, Missouri. With her family, they lived in Florissant until Donald’s work took him to Kansas City, Missouri in 1983. After Donald’s retirement in 1996, they moved to Sullivan.

Shirley took up painting upon their arrival in Sullivan and became quite good at it. She has many paintings hanging on the walls of their home. She was loved by everyone who knew her.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Arnold O. J. Fink. She is survived by her husband, Donald; sisters Dorothy Bacon of Largo, Florida and Betty (Frank) Oxford of Ellisville, Missouri; a brother Lester (Judi) Fink of Belleville, Illinois; two children Keith (Martha) Bacon of Florissant and Karen (Jerry) Trifiletti of St. Charles, Missouri; two grandchildren, Jessica and Jennifer Bacon; one step-grandson Tim Trifiletti; and one step-great grandson, Vincent Trifiletti.

The joys of her life, besides her painting, were her two children and grandchildren, and landscaping her home with flowers.

A private visitation and cremation was arranged by Eaton Funeral Home. On September 3, 2008, a private memorial service for the immediate family was held.

Anita Jo Nelson

Anita Jo Nelson of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the age of 42 years.

Anita was born on August 12, 1966 in Ellisville, MO, to Elmer L. and Juanita (nee Wright) Nelson, one of four children. She enjoyed spending time with her daughter and taking care of her dogs. Before illness, she worked for TTI in Union for over 9 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Amanda Jo of the family home; her father, Elmer L. Nelson and step-mother Vanita (nee Evans) of Centertown, KY; two brothers, Steve Nelson of Sullivan and Bobby J. Nelson of Pacific, MO, a sister, Kathy Lyons and husband Jerry of Bowling Green, KY, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Juanita.

A memorial service for Anita Jo Nelson was conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, Missouri. Visitation began at 5:00 p.m. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

Anderson, Ben

Benjamin A. Anderson of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Sunday, April 20, 2008 at the age of 83 years.

Ben, as he was known by his family and friends, was born on the family farm near Sullivan in the Brush Creek area on February 7, 1925 to William C. and Grace K. (Sibole) Anderson. He attended Reedville School and later was inducted into the U.S. Army during W.W.II. He honorably served overseas in the Normandy Campaign as a combat infantryman. Ben received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for injuries sustained in the line of duty. He was medically discharged in March of 1945 and later that month married Mary E. Steen at Chicago, Illinois. Ben farmed the family farm for a time and later went into the construction trade. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and was a Deacon there. Ben was a loving and devoted family man who was known as a hard worker and had perseverance and was a man of his word.

He is survived by a son, Ben Anderson and wife Jeannie of Sullivan, Missouri and one daughter, Barbara Osborn and husband J.J. of St. Clair, Missouri; one sister, Melba Edwards of Sullivan, Missouri; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ruth Anderson of St. Clair, Missouri; other relatives and friends. Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by a brother, William Everett Anderson and a brother-in-law, Henry R. Edwards.

Funeral services were conducted 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, 2008 from the chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Mr. Stan Briggs officiating. Interment was in the New Chapel Hill Cemetery, rural Sullivan. Visitation for Mr. Ben Anderson was held from 4:30 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Eaton Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Chapel Hill Cemetery Fund.

Alexander, Roy M. (Max)

Roy McClarney “Max” Alexander of Sullivan, Missouri passed away Saturday, July 19, 2008 at the age of 81 years.

Max was born at Bourbon, Missouri on December 29, 1926 to Roy E. and Rose L. (Miller) Alexander. He was a life long resident of the Sullivan and Bourbon areas and on August 12, 1950 was married to Madeline Alta Sparks. He honorably served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army in Japan. Max was an avid aviator and during the late 1940’s and early 50’s was a crop duster as well as a licensed airframe welder and master mechanic. Max had taught flight instruction for many years and was known throughout the area for his ‘sky sign’. He was also involved many years in the real estate trade and was employed at the Bank of Sullivan as a teller. He never met a stranger and loved to talk to anyone who would listen. Max was known as a mechanical genius who could fix or make anything workable out of spare parts or pieces. He was a member of the Sullivan Masonic Lodge No. 69 AF & AM and member of the Order of Eastern Star, Sullivan Chapter 105.

He is survived by two sons; Stephen Alexander and wife Suzanne of Rolla, Missouri and Paul Alexander and wife Sharon of Sullivan; one daughter, Yvonne Tidwell and husband Jerome of St. Peters, Missouri; two brothers, David Alexander of Safford, Arizona and Berkley Alexander of Bourbon, Missouri; two sisters, Peggy Chenowith of Sullivan and Amy Brewington of Bourbon; five grandchildren, Sean, Megan, P.D. II, Brandilyn and Lindsy, three step-grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Along with his parents, Max was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline and a brother Curtis.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 from Grace United Methodist Church in Sullivan with the Rev. Dr. Steven Williams officiating. Interment was in Oddfellows Cemetery in Sullivan. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church in memory of Max Alexander. Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.
