Lelia Tyree

Lela V. Tyree of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at the age of 83 years.

Lela was born on March 27, 1919 at Sullivan to the late James and Olive (Doyle) Cain. She lived her entire life in the Spring Bluff and Sullivan areas. On August 3, 1940 Lela was married to Lester Tyree at Sullivan, and they were blessed with three children. She was a member of the Spring Bluff homemakers, and enjoyed playing the piano and guitar in her younger days. Mrs. Tyree was an active and faithful charter member of Faith Assembly of God in Sullivan. She was also involved in Women’s Ministries and taught Sunday school for many years. She spent many hours crocheting babies booties for all the new babies in her family and at church. Lela loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She will be sadly missed by all of her family and many church friends.

She is survived by one son, Randy Tyree of Leslie; two daughters, Cheryl Lloyd and husband, John, of Sullivan, and Diann McMillian and husband, Leon, of Fulton, Missouri; one sister, Arvetta Brueseke of Sullivan; four grandchildren, Chad Hagar, and wife, Nora, of Columbia, Missouri, Clay Hagar and wife, Jenny, of Auxvasse, Missouri, Benji Koonce and wife, Danielle, and Gretchen Stewart and husband, Jason, all of Sullivan; four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Along with her parents, Lela was preceded in death by her husband, Lester, in 1968 and one grandson, Cory Hager.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2002 from Faith Assembly of God in Sullivan with Pastor Dan Martin officiating. Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Mellie Mosbey Mueller (Miller) Bandy

1904 was a very good year! It was the year of the St. Louis 1904 World’s Fair. It was the year that Mellie Bandy was born! She was the daughter of Emma (Brown) and Henry Mueller (Miller). She was born on November 10, 1904 as Mellie Mosbey Mueller. She departed this life on July 8, 2002 at the age of 97 – having lived a strong, enduring, and caring life that spanned most of the twentieth century.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Franklin Bandy, after more than 65 years of marriage. She was also preceded by two sons, Lloyd and Arnold, and by a grandson, Ronald Bandy.

She has one surviving sibling. This is her youngest sister, Lorraine Ward, of Independence, Missouri. She was preceded in death by three brothers – John and George Mueller (Miller), and by Phillip, who died as a young boy.

Three sisters – Edith Brewer, Mary Unk, and Viola Clements – also preceded her in death.

Someone commented that she must have been a good daughter because she received God’s promise of a long life – “Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” She was truly a good daughter! As a young teenager, she was called upon to remain at home where her help was needed with family. She did not get to complete her eighth grade school year. As an adult, she spent two periods of her life caring for her aging mother and her aged mother-in-law.

She was a loving wife and mother, and is survived by five children. Her four surviving sons are Francis Bandy and wife, Liz, of Estero, Florida; Willard “Bill” Bandy and wife, Barbara, of Lake St. Louis, Missouri; Roy Calvin Bandy and wife, Joyce, of Sullivan, Missouri, and Don Bandy and wife, Marcie, of Atlanta, Georgia. She is survived by one daughter, Marjorie Bandy, of Sullivan, Missouri. She is survived by thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Mellie attended Evergreen Baptist Church as a child and a teenager, and later was a member and active participant for more than 70 years.

Where Mellie lived throughout her long life, she planted! She planted trees, bushes, flowers, and huge vegetable gardens. There are at least four homes in the Sullivan area where trees, bushes, and perennials have prospered and stand today as a testamonial to her “green thumb.” A neighbor commented that she could put a stick in the ground and make it grow, and that she faithfully watered her flowers from her rain barrel.

In later years, after the harvest, she quilted throughout the winter months. Each child and grandchild received one of her homemade quilts.

Important celebrations in her life included her fiftieth wedding anniversary, her sixtieth wedding anniversary, and her ninety-fifth birthday. The final celebration was a celebration of her life on July 11, 2002 at Evergreen Baptist Church. Reverend Warren Brewer was the minister in charge of that celebration. Marsha Johanning, Sandy Koppelmann, and Hannah Smith were the vocalists. John Bazel, Oran Brewer, David Cornman, Audrey Laubinger, Gilbert McMahan, and Curtis Mueller were pallbearers.

Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Hassebroek Funeral Home – a subsidiary of the Eaton Funeral Home. The ladies of Evergreen Baptist Church provided the celebration dinner.

Mellie will not be forgotten on this earth but will live on in the memories and lives of many who were touched by her long days “upon this land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.”
