C. Gordon Baxter III

Clarence Gordon Baxter, III of Sullivan, Missouri passed away at his home on Saturday, April 20, 2002 at the age of 73 years.

Mr. Baxter was born on January 28, 1929 in St. Louis, Missouri to Clarence Gordon Baxter, Jr. and Theresa E. (Waldbart) Baxter. He graduated from Normandy High School and the Rankin Technical Institute. As a young man, he honorably served his country during the Korean War through the United States Naval Reserves. Gordon has been a prominent nursery businessman both in St. Louis and the Bourbon and Sullivan areas. He retired from his businesses (Baxter Farms & Nurseries, Baxter Gardens, and Hillside Nursery) to come to the family farm outside of Steelville, Missouri to fish, hunt, and ride his horses. This was soon not enough for him, however. So, Gordon opened another nursery, Meramec Valley Nursery, between Sullivan and Bourbon. His expertise and knowledge of design and landscaping were soon to be enjoyed by those in this area. As one drives through Sullivan, Bourbon, and the outlying areas, one can see what Gordon has left to the world --- many trees and beautiful arrangements which will go on forever. On July 24, 1982 he was united in marriage to Patricia A. McDonald at the First United Methodist Church in St. Charles, Missouri. Gordon was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the local Chamber of Commerce, the American Association of Nurserymen, and a follower of the Catholic faith.
