Thomas Madden

Thomas E. Madden of Bourbon, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at the age of 76 years.

Mr. Madden was born on March 18, 1924 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late Charles James and Alice (Troy) Madden. After attending Ritenour High School in St. Louis, he enlisted in the United States Marines. Mr. Madden honorably served his country during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Purple Heart as a result of being wounded in action on March 11, 1951 in Hoengsong, Korea. On April 22, 1950 he was united in marriage to Velma White. In 1952 Mr. Madden went to work for the Heat and Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers Local #1, and was employed for many years as a pipe coverer. After his retirement in 1987, he lived in Hazelwood, Missouri for a few years, and then moved to Bourbon in 1994 in order to be near his daughter and son-in-law. Mr. Madden was an avid sports fan who enjoyed fishing, bowling, golf, flying, and especially his grandchildren. He was a member of t3he G31K Marine organization, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife, Velma Madden of Bourbon; one daughter, Joanne Barclay and husband, David of Bourbon; two brothers, Robert Madden and wife, Marion of Berkeley, Missouri and William Madden of St. Charles, Missouri; one sister, Mary Bunt of St. Ann, Missouri; three grandchildren, Carolyn White and husband, James, and Chad and Colleen Barclay, all of Bourbon; one great-grandchild, Zachary White; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Madden was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles James Madden and John Richard Madden.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2001 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Harold Harrison officiating. Interment was in the Bourbon Cemetery with military honors.

Alice Schmuke

Alice Louise Schmuke nee Doyle of Sullivan, MO passed away Thursday, January 25, 2001 at the age of 78 years.

Mrs. Schmuke was born May 11, 1922 at St. Louis, Missouri to the late Joseph and Chancey (Whelan) Doyle. She was raised in the St. Louis area and on February 14, 1951 was married to Arthur Schmuke. Alice was employed many years at the Defense Plant in the mail department as a supervisor. She had made her home in Sullivan the past nine years. She found pleasure in helping children and was a mentor for many youth in the Sullivan area. Alice was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Sullivan.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur Schmuke, a step-son Richard Schmuke and wife D.J. of St. Louis, two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Mrs. Schmuke was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Doyle.

Visitation was held from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Friday evening at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. Private graveside services were held on Saturday, January 27, 2001 in I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery, Sullivan, Missouri with Rev. Bart Hildreth officiating.

Ray Nethington

Ray Nethington of Sullivan, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2001 at the age of 80 years.

Mr. Nethington was born February 7, 1920 at Berryman, Missouri to the late Henry and Cora (Wilkerson) Nethington. He attended school in the Berryman area until the 8th grade when he went to work with the CC Camp. Mr. Nethington later enlisted in the U.S. Army and honorably served his country during W.W.II in the European and African Theaters. On November 25, 1945 he was married to Ruth Evans at St. Louis and then made their home in Sullivan. Ray was employed as a precision tool grinder at McDonell-Douglas from which he retired several years ago. He was a 50 year member of Sullivan Oddfellows Lodge No. 156 and member of New Testament Baptist Church of Sullivan. Ray found pleasure in sports, especially baseball and could be often seen at the local ballparks watching the youth.

He is survived by his wife Ruth nee Evans of Sullivan, one son, Dennis Nethington of Fenton, Missouri one daughter, Linda Beckett of Bourbon, a step-daughter, Evelyn Metcalf of Palmyra, Missouri, 6 grandchildren, Jesse and Brad Beckett, Amy, Emily, Evan and Amanda Nethington, other relatives and friends. Mr. Nethington was preceded in death by four brothers, Jesse, Albert, Floyd and Earl Nethington and by one sister, Minnie Bell.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 2, 2001 from New Testament Baptist Church in Sullivan with Pastors Mike King and Oliver Mullen officiating. Interment was in Davisville Cemetery. Oddfellows memorial services were conducted at 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening from the Eaton Funeral Home under the direction of Sullivan Lodge No. 156. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, Missouri.

John L. Kimberlin, Jr.

John L. Kimberlin, Jr. of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2001 at the age of 70 years.

Mr. Kimberlin was born May 7, 1930 at Bourbon, Missouri to the late John and Emma (Merkel) Kimberlin. He was raised and educated in the Bourbon area. On June 7, 1952 he was married to Bonnie Blankenship at Pocahontas, Arkansas. They made their home briefly in Sullivan and later moved to St. Clair, Missouri. John was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as an installer and repairman and retired from there after 32 years. After retirement, John moved back to the Sullivan area. He found pleasure in Pheasant hunting, fishing and camping. He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church of Bourbon, Missouri and Elks Lodge No. 2651 of St. Clair.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Kimberlin of Sullivan; two sons, Kurt Kimberlin and wife, Debbie of St. Charles, Missouri and Greg Kimberlin and wife, Joyce of Bourbon, Missouri; one daughter, Michele Krygiel and husband, Thomas of Sullivan; seven grandchildren, Tommy and Chelsey Krygiel, and Derick, Kyle, Justin, Ryan, and Tyler Kimberlin; other relatives, and friends. Along with his parents, Mr. Kimberlin was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Elizabeth Marie Kimberlin.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2001 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with interment in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:30 until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, February 2, 2001 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan. If desired, contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association in memory of John L. Kimberlin, Jr.

Raymond Johanning

Raymond C. Johanning of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Friday, February 2, 2001 at the age of 87 years.

Mr. Johanning was born on December 18, 1913 in Hooper, Nebraska to the late Henry August and Amelia Hanna (Janssen) Johanning. At the age of eleven, he moved with his family to the Champion City, Missouri area. In 1942 Raymond enlisted in the United States Army, and honorably served his country during World War II. On January 24, 1948 he was united in marriage to Cecilia Valley in Gerald, Missouri. As a lifelong resident of the Sullivan area, Raymond worked for several years as a machinist for the Ramsey Corporation, and later for the Sullivan Parks Department. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and other types of yard work. He will be remembered and cherished as a man who made himself available to help others.

He is survived by three sons, Ervin Johanning and wife, Chris of Sullivan, Michael Johanning of St. Louis, and James Johanning of Belle, Missouri; one stepson, Joseph Valley of Belle; three daughters, Diane Sumpter and Ruth Burleigh, both of Sullivan, and Beverly Nielsen and husband, Andy of Bourbon, Missouri; two brothers, Delmar Johanning and Vertis Johanning and wife, Hallie, all of Sullivan; three sisters, Lois Schollmeyer of Sullivan, Erma Thenhaus and husband, Esco of Gerald, Missouri and Grace Altemeyer of St. Louis; eighteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Johanning was preceded in death by his wife, Cecilia; one daughter, Nancy Johnson; two brothers, Wilfred and Harry Johanning; one sister, Henrietta Danz; and two grandchildren, Nancy and Ronnie Johnson.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 5, 2001 from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Leonard Krudop officiating. Interment was in the Champion City Methodist Church Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to the Champion City Methodist Church in memory of Mr. Raymond Johanning.

Olivia Maire Reid

Olivia Marie Reid, infant daughter of Patrick and Sarah (Pondrom) Reid, fell asleep in Jesus on February 2, 2001.

Along with her parents she is survived by her paternal grandmother, Susan Reid, maternal grandparents, Gary and Alice Pondrom, and paternal great-grandmother, Fran Pondrom. Olivia was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, John Reid.

Graveside services were conducted 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at Midlawn Memorial Gardens in Union, Missouri.

Irene Mary Leibert

Irene Mary Leibert of Cuba, Missouri passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2001 at the age of 87 years.

Mrs. Leibert was born on May 8, 1913 in Geneva, New York to the late Grover Cleveland and Mary Elizabeth (Hardey) Pierce. In 1930 she was joined in marriage to Fredrick A. Leibert, Sr. in New York, and to this union seven children were born. Irene worked for approximately ten years at the North Chili Plastics Company in Chili, New York. Otherwise, her primary vocation throughout her adult life was serving her family as a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. After fifty-three years of marriage, Mr. Leibert preceded Irene in death in 1983. Her favorite pastimes included camping, fishing, playing bingo, visiting casinos, and going to Six Flags with members of her family. She will be remembered and cherished as a great person who loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly, and also had a special place in her heart for all little children. Mrs. Leibert was a member of the Catholic faith.

She is survived by two sons, Fredrick Leibert, Jr. and John Leibert and wife, Patricia, all of the state of New York; four daughters, Anna Kinch and husband, Howard of Huntsville, Alabama, Nancy Lopez and Frances Coleman, both of the state of New York, and Elizabeth Day and husband, Rodney of Cuba, Missouri; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Leibert was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Leibert, and her sister, Eleanor Plant.

Interment was conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at the Bourbon Cemetery in Bourbon, Missouri. All arrangements were under the care of the Hassebroek Funeral Home of Sullivan, Missouri.

Elbert Vines

Elbert L. Vines of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2001 at the age of 89 years.

Mr. Vines was born on November 14, 1911 in Corning, Arkansas to the late George Lox and Elizabeth Frances (Hayes) Vines. He was raised in Corning, and moved to St. Louis just prior to being inducted into the United States Army on June 5, 1942. After defending his country during World War II, and being awarded five bronze stars due to his service in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Ardennes, Mr. Vines was honorable discharged in September 1945. On April 7, 1951 he was joined in marriage to Goldie Dale White in St. Louis, and to their union two daughters were born. Elbert worked as a mechanic for over 35 years for GAF Building Products in St. Louis, and, following his retirement in 1976, moved to the Steelville area. Then, in 1997 he and his wife moved to Sullivan. Elbert’s favorite pastimes included hunting, fishing, and picking walnuts. He was a member of the True Vine Baptist Church of Sullivan, and also the Mizpah Mt. Moriah Lodge #40 AF & AM of Florissant, Missouri where he attained the level of Scottish Rite 32nd Degree. Mr. Vines will be remembered and cherished as a good man who was extremely generous, and who dearly loved his family.

He is survived by his wife, Dale Vines of Sullivan; two daughters, Patsy M. Rowland of Sullivan and Donna K. Vines of Lake St. Louis, Missouri; one sister, Effie Miller of Angleton, Texas; four grandchildren, Ray Rowland and wife, Carol, Thomas Rowland and wife, Antonia, Cristi Wollenberg and Mark Wollenberg, Jr.; four great-grandchildren, Sherry, Paxton, Alexis, and Austin Rowland; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Vines was preceded in death by five brothers and eight sisters.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 15, 2001 from the Chapel of the Hassebroek Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Lindell Vawter officiating. Interment was in the Bourbon Cemetery. If desired, contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation in memory of Mr. Elbert Vines.

Carl B. Dean

Carl B. Dean of Sullivan, Missouri passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2001 at the age of 74 years.

Mr. Dean was born on December 20, 1926 in Valley Park, Missouri to the late Ben and Adele (Schneedle) Dean. He lived the majority of his life in the Valley Park area, and later moved to the Sullivan area in 1989. On July 26, 1950 he was united in marriage to Mary P. Goff in Kirkwood, Missouri. Carl worked throughout his adult life as a laborer in the sanitation industry, first for Wilson Hauling and later for Environmental Waste Management. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, board games, and especially found pleasure in playing Santa during the Christmas season. Mr. Dean will be cherished and remembered as a good man who loved meeting people, and who “never met a stranger.” He was a member of the Pentecostal faith, and also of the Russell Schmidt VFW Post 3987.

He is survived by one son, Jim Dean and wife, Dana of Gastonia, North Carolina; four daughters, Donna Hawkins and husband, Larry and Cheryl Franklin and husband, Eddie, all of Sullivan, Deborah Hawkins and husband, Eddie of Stanton, Missouri and Virginia Borgmann and husband, Paul of St. Peters, Missouri; two brothers, Ronnie Dean of Valley Park, Missouri and Ralph Dean of Arnold, Missouri; one sister, Lorretta Workman of Fenton, Missouri; fourteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Dean was preceded in death by his wife, Mary in 1993, and one sister, Marian Brown.

Memorial services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 19, 2001 from the Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Devin Jones and Pastor James Self officiating. Inurnment was in the Stanton Cemetery.
