Helen Frances Bratton Hess
January 19, 2008

Helen Frances Bratton Hess, 86, of rural Concordia, MO, died Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at Zion Hill Methodist Church with Rev. Jackson Short officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Monday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Concordia where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the church or church cemetery.

Helen Frances Bratton was born on January 12, 1922 in Mayview, MO to the late Jerome David Bratton and Anna Green Bratton. Helen’s family moved to rural Concordia in December of 1927 and she graduated from Higginsville High School in 1940. On June 4, 1942, at the Bratton family home she married Sterling Roe Hess who preceded her in death on May 30, 1971. Helen Frances worked shortly for the International Shoe Factory in Higginsville prior to moving to Virginia and Pennsylvania from June 1942 to August 1943 while her husband was a member of the 3rd Armored Army Division. They returned to rural Concordia and Helen Frances was a dedicated homemaker for her family as well as making time to be a kind and thoughtful caregiver for many and being an amazing friend to all who knew her. She was an active lifelong member of Zion Hill Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Robert Allen Hess and wife Debbie of rural Concordia; one granddaughter, Renee Hess Kearney and husband Jeremy; as well as many close and dear friends. Ryan and Joy Hulver of Tulsa, OK, are the parents of Helen Frances’ namesake, Julia Helen Hulver.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Sterling Roe Hess, Jr., who was stillborn on October 23, 1943 and Terry Lynn Hess who died in 1986.

James Leon (Buddy) Tyler, Jr.
January 13, 2008

James Leon (Buddy) Tyler, Jr., 44, of Marshall, MO, formerly of Sweet Springs, MO, died Sunday, January 13, 2008, at home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 17, 2008, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall with William W. Harlow officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Memorials may be made to family choice.

Born November 5, 1963, in Marshall, he was the son of James Leon Tyler, Sr. of Marshall and Shirley Jean Phillips Adams and husband Walter of the home. He had lived in Saline County his entire life and was a graduate of Okmulgee College in Okmulgee, OK. He had worked at International Shoe Company, Rival Manufacturing and Eastman Mattress Factory.

Additional survivors include one son, Russell Leon Tyler of Moberly, MO; two grandchildren; one brother, Philip Hontz of Marshall; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert Eugene Venable
January 12, 2008

Robert Gene Venable, 74, of rural Sweet Springs, MO, died Saturday, January 12, 2008, at Big Bend Retreat in Slater.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2008, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall with William W. Harlow officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Memorials may be made to Big Bend Retreat.

Born September 21, 1933, in rural Sweet Springs, he was the son of the late Roy B. Venable and Ruby L. Houston Venable. On April 1, 1956, he married Louzetta Fern (Lou) Vaught who survives of the home. He had lived in rural Sweet Springs his entire life where he was a farmer. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sweet Springs.

Additional survivors include one daughter, Rebecca A. Limback of Waverly, MO; one son, Russell E. Venable of Santa Fe, NM; two grandchildren, Jeremiah Dean Limback of Emma, MO and Kristina Gayle Johnson and husband Marc of rural Sweet Springs; one great-grandson, Dalyn William Johnson; one brother, Ralph Venable and wife Shirley of rural Sweet Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

Susan Jane Small Long
January 9, 2008

Susan Jane Small Long died on Wednesday, January 9, 2008. She was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1944 to William Addison Small and Elaine Slothower who presently live in St. Louis. She married her high school sweetheart, James Campbell Long in 1966 after they graduated from the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio.

The couple has three children, James Campbell Jr. of Springfield, Missouri, Jesse Matthew of Titusville, Florida and Laura Lee of Columbia, Missouri. They have two daughters in law Jennie Johnson and Julie Vaughen, and four grandchildren, Susan Campbell, Allison Sedona, Addison Matthew, and Ethan James. Sue also has two siblings, Patricia Small French, who resides in Billings, Montana, and William Addison Small, Jr. who lives in Montrose, Colorado.

Sue taught elementary and secondary school in New Jersey while Jim attended Princeton Theological Seminary, from which he graduated with a Master’s degree in 1969. Jim served three churches in New York State before the couple returned to their home state of Missouri. Sue devoted thirty-eight years in partnership with him in the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA).

In Marshall, she was part-time secretary for Covenant Presbyterian Church, Coordinator of the Family Literacy Program, and editor of the Marshall Writers’ Guild annual publication.

Sue loved the out doors, so you would often find her with hands deep in the soil. Sue loved singing. Sue loved writing. Sue loved peace – not just finding quiet and meaning in the soil and singing and writing, but also in the quiet gifts of forgiveness and gentle patience she offered to friends and strangers.

Sue loved flowers, but she also loved serving others, and so in lieu of flowers we invite contributions to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 710 East Yerby, Marshall, Mo 65340.

There will be a Memorial Service, Saturday, January 12th, at 1:00 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church. There will be a time for visitation from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. and a reception following the service. Arrangements c/o Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall.

Mattie Ray
January 8, 2008

Mattie Ray, 102, of Marshall, MO, died Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at Mar-Saline Manor in Marshall.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, January 10, 2008, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall with Rev. Dave Huck officiating.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church.

Born January 27, 1905, in Saline County, MO, she was the daughter of the late William L. Odell and Dora Watts Odell. On May 31, 1930, she married Charles J. Ray who preceded her in death on February 15, 1985. She had lived in Saline County most of her life and was a member of First United Methodist Church and its Circle No. 4. She was also a member of Arrow Rock Chapter D.A.R, Chapter J.S. of P.E.O. and Friends of Arrow Rock.

Survivors include one brother, Gregory Odell of Gardner, KS; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters.

Mary Huffman Stolberg
January 8, 2008

Mary Huffman Stolberg, 87, of Marshall, MO, died Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at The Living Center in Marshall.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 11, 2008, in Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Rev. Barry Baugh will officiate. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall. Memorials may be made to Smith Chapel United Methodist Church.

Born April 16, 1920, in Liverpool, England, she was the daughter of the late George Harold Crowther and Sarah Elizabeth Banks Crowther. On July 15, 1944, she married John L. Huffman who preceded her in death on February 2, 1963. On October 9, 1965, she married Bernard (Barney) Stolberg who preceded her in death on March 24, 1993. She had lived in Saline County since April of 1946 moving from England and was a homemaker. She was a Methodist.

Survivors include one step-daughter, Kathryn (Kay) Kamery of Marshall; five step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; four step-great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by one step-son, James Stolberg.

Dorothy M. Davis
January 6, 2008

Dorothy M. Davis, 94, of Lexington, formerly of Marshall, died Sunday, January 6, 2008, at Lexington Care Center in Lexington.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2008, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall with Rev. Wayne Doolin officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Pallbearers will be Russ Davis, Steve Davis, Rick Davis, Mike Davis and Scott Davis. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or Care Alternatives Hospice.

Born August 9, 1913 in Lebanon, MO, she was the daughter of the late Roy Allison and Ida Hesker Allison. On July 2, 1932, in Hartville, MO, she married R.L. Davis who preceded her in death on October 6, 1970. She had lived in Marshall since 1945 where she was a homemaker and along with her husband owned and operated Davis Shoe Store for many years. She was an active member of First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for 25 years and served as assistant librarian along with being a member and director of W.M.U. and circle leader.

Survivors include two sons, Billy Davis and wife, Diana of Lexington and Eddie Davis and wife Alice of Higginsville; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Davis of Springfield, MO; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two sons, Larry Don Davis, in infancy, and Robert L. Davis; one grandson, David Davis; three brothers, Dwayne Allison, Keith Allison and Kenneth Allison; and one sister, Charlotte Spreaker.
