Gwendolynne Naomi Sargent Piper
February 16, 1922 - February 17, 2013

Gwendolynne Naomi Sargent Piper,91, beloved wife of Roy D. (Shanty) Piper (who died April 27, 2011) passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2013, in Marshall, after a long battle with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. She leaves behind a grieving family which includes her only child, a daughter she loved dearly, Patricia Ann Piper Furry; a son-in-law she called her son for 46 years, Wayne Furry; a grandson she thought was perfect, Timothy Furry; his wife she loved like a granddaughter, Jennifer Furry; two great-grandsons she adored, Aiden and Simon Furry; a niece that was always like her sister, Anna Marie Sharp; and many loving friends. Gwen was born in Slater on February 16, 1922, the fifth of six children, all of whom preceded her in death. She married Shanty Piper on September 23, 1939, in the heart of the depression and they worked hard together all of their lives, but always had time to give a helping hand to others. The Pipers celebrated 71 wonderful years of marriage in 2010 and leave a family who misses them very much but knows they are now together in God’s arms.

Memorial graveside services will be held at a later date in Arrow Rock Cemetery. Please remember her with a gift to Fitzgibbon-Mary Montgomery Hospice who gave her wonderful care in her final days, or to the Alzheimer’s Association in care of Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall.

Alverna Frerking
August 11, 1914 - February 16, 2013

Alverna Frerking, 98, of Concordia, MO, died Saturday, February 16, 2013, at The Lutheran Nursing Home in Concordia.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Concordia, with Rev. R. Lee Hagan officiating, burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Concordia. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Born August 11, 1914, in Emma, MO, she was the daughter of the late August Heidorn and Flora Bredehoeft Heidorn. On April 21, 1940, she married Roy S. Frerking who preceded her in death on November 16, 1968. She had lived in the Concordia area most of her life, was a homemaker and prior to her marriage she was a housekeeper in Kansas City, MO. She had also worked in the kitchen at The Good Shepherd Home in Concordia. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and its Altar Guild, an active member of the Twilight Group where she arranged many local bus trips, and was instrumental in forming the Concordia Senior Center. On April 17, 1977 she was named First Lady of the Year by Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She always had a huge garden, and loved cooking, sewing, and quilting.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Bushman and husband Roger of Concordia, Phyllis Limback and husband Loren of Alma; four grandchildren: Jeff Bushman, Greg Bushman and wife Risa, Christine Murray and husband Wess, and Jared Limback; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Harold and Harvey Heidorn who were twins and died in infancy, and Edgar Heidorn who died in World War II.

Mary Grace Diel
August 22, 1917 - December 30, 2012

Mary Grace Diel, 95, of rural Malta Bend, MO, died Sunday, December 30, 2012 at The Living Center in Marshall.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2013 at St. Peter Catholic Church with Fr. Tom Alber officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Park Cemetery. Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Friday at Campbell-Lewis Chapel with visitation following until 7:30 p.m. Memorials are suggested to St. Peter Catholic Church or Wellness Adult Day Health Care.

Born August 22, 1917 in Pilot Grove, MO, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward Roth and Mary Odelia Krumm Roth. On September 6, 1937 in Pilot Grove, she married Carl E. Diel who preceded her in death on November 14, 1992. She resided in the Malta Bend area since 1946 where she was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and its Altar and Rosary Society.

Survivors include one daughter, Virginia Rose Graver of rural Malta Bend, formerly of Raytown, MO; five grandchildren: Steve Graver and wife Sarah, Joe Graver and wife Annette, Tim Graver, Adam Diel and wife Michelle, Amy Schmidt and husband Joe; seven great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Robert W. Diel; four brothers and three sisters.

Edith Wright
September 20, 1923 - December 22, 2012

Edith Wright, 89, of Columbia, MO, formerly of Marshall Junction, died Saturday, December 22, 2012, at Lenior Woods in Columbia.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2012, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall, with William W. Harlow officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens Cemetery in Marshall. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Sheri Beissenherz, Kevin Tilly, Elliot Royer, Mark Royer, Jonathan Tanner and Ben Tanner. Memorials may be made to New Salem Baptist Church.

Born September 20, 1923, in Napton, MO, she was the daughter of the late Russell Mitchell and Della Niceley Mitchell. On January 4, 1945, she married Nathan H. Wright who preceded her in death on August 31, 2003. She had lived in Saline County most of her life, moving to Columbia in 2005. She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church and was very active in the Marshall Junction community.

Survivors include three daughters, Cheryl Tilly and husband Darold of Odessa, Mo, Nancy Royer and husband Ron of Kansas City, MO and Barb Tanner and husband Doug of Columbia; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edgar Mitchell of Chicago, IL and R.W. Mitchell and wife Bernadean of rural Houstonia; two sisters, Hazel Cornine of Marshall Junction and Jean Sims and husband J.M. of Marshall; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kenneth J. Friley

August 27, 1920 - December 21, 2012

Kenneth J. Friley, 92, of Wichita, KS, formerly of Aurora and Marshall, MO, died Friday, December 21, 2012, at Medical Lodge of Goddard in Goddard, KS.

Graveside services will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday, December 24, 2012, at Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall, with William W. Harlow officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Born August 27, 1920, in Cambridge, MO, he was the son of the late Calvin Friley and Nola May Epperson Friley. He was a 1938 graduate of Marshall High School. On December 26, 1953, in Marshall, he married Ida M. Brumble who preceded him in death on July 12, 1999. He had lived in Wichita since 1999, moving from Aurora, previously living in Marshall. He was a retired shoe factory mechanic.

Survivors include one daughter, Nita Hansen and husband Jack of Wichita, KS; two stepsons, Harvey Morrow of Springfield, MO and Dr. Harold Morrow of Lake Ozark, MO; two grandsons, Jeremy and John Hansen; four step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Gerald Lee Friley, Vernon Linwood Friley and Junior Calvin Friley; and one sister, Mildred L. Foster.

Betty Conn Jones
May 19, 1933 - December 20, 2012

Betty Conn Jones, 79, of Marshall, MO, died Thursday, December 20, 2012, at The Living Center in Marshall.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall, with William W. Harlow officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Memorials may be made to Blue Lick Cemetery.

Born May 19, 1933, in Herndon, MO, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Richard Crawford and Minnie Bell Stephenson Crawford. On June 30, 1961, she married Donald W. Conn who preceded her in death on June 11, 1969. She had lived in Marshall most of her life, retired from Kraft Foods and was owner and operator of B.J.’s Bar and Grill.

Survivors include two daughters, Dawn Moore of Marshall and Melanie McNulty of Marshall; five grandchildren, Brandon, Joseph and Matthew McNulty, Chelsea and Lucas Moore; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Raymond, Mark, Lewis, Alfred and Richard Crawford; and four sisters, Rosa Riddle, Elizabeth Crawford, Lorene Seay and Jean Crawford.

Betty Wilson
October 6, 1933 - December 18, 2012

Betty Wilson, 79, of Marshall, MO, died Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, December 22, 2012, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall. Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall. Memorials may be made to Life Care Center of Carrollton or Carroll County Memorial Hospital.

Born October 6, 1933, in Elkton, MD, she was the daughter of the late Albert E. Janes and Mary Edith Bryson Janes. On December 18, 1953, she married H.H. Wilson who survives. She had lived in Marshall most of her life, was a member of Smith Chapel United Methodist Church and GFWC Coterie Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Martin and husband Tim of Marshall and Kimberly Davis and husband Jerry of Miami, MO; four grandchildren, Nichole Davis, J.W. Davis, Jacob Davis and Erika Martin; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Albert E. Janes; and three sisters, Dorthea Gatchell, Carolyn Ann Heverin and Rose Brenizer.
