BIRDSONG

Bettie Birdsong, 58, Eldon, died May 2, 1999, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis.

She was born Aug. 9, 1940, in Graham, Texas , a daughter of Horace R. and Iva McWhorter Reeves. She was married Oct. 19, 1961, in Colorado Springs, Colo., to James Birdsong, who died Dec. 31, 1993.

She was a restaurant cook.

Survivors include: three sons, James Birdsong and Mickey Birdsong, both of Eldon, and David Birdsong, Camdenton; four brothers; five sisters; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The Rev. George Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Greenmore Memorial Gardens, Barnett.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials are suggested to the Hope Lodge, 4215 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis, Mo. 63108.

SPRAKER

Robert C. Spraker, 80, Gravois Mills, died May 7, 1999, at University of Missouri-Columbia Hospital and Clinics.

He was born Aug. 28, 1918, in Des Moines, Iowa, a son of Alva and Frances Cook Spraker. He was married April 26, 1941, to Margaret B. MacKinnon, who survives at the home.

He was a retired vice president of Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company, Des Moines, and he was a trustee of Saylor Township in Des Moines. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Shrine in Des Moines and the Kent Memorial Lutheran Church, Sunrise Beach. He served in the Navy during World War II.

Other survivors include; one son, R. Thomas Spraker, Racine, Wis.; two daughters, Sharon Bernard, Kenosha, Wis., and Margaret VanDenburg, Overland Park, Kan.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Kent Memorial Lutheran Church, Sunrise Beach. The Rev. James Trutwin will officiate. The body will be cremated.

Visitation will be from 2-3 p.m. Monday.

Memorials are suggested to Kent Memorial Lutheran Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Laurie.

VEIT

Paul August Veit, 77,  Jefferson City, died May 6, 1999, at Capital Healthcare Center.

He was born Aug. 7, 1921, in Cole County, a son of Adolph and Katherine Poetker Veit. He was married June 28, 1958, in St. Martins, to Lillian Barbara Distler, who survives at the home.

He was employed in the maintenance department of the Cole County Road District for 30 years. He served as a groundskeeper for the  Jefferson City Country Club for eight years.

He was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral,  Jefferson City, the Cole County Farm Bureau, and was a volunteer for the Meals-on-Wheels program.

Other survivors include: one daughter, Mary Kay Kliethermes, Holts Summit; one sister, Mary Schwarzer,  Jefferson City; one brother, Herman Veit,  Jefferson City; and two grandchildren.

Twin infant sons, Ronnie and Donnie Veit, and an infant granddaughter preceded him in death.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Cathedral. The Rev. Christopher L. Cordes will officiate. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Vogelweid Learning Center or a charity of the donor's choice.

BROWN

Joseph A. Brown Jr., 79, Sunrise Beach, died May 6, 1999, at Lake of the Ozarks General Hospital, Osage Beach.

He was born Feb. 25, 1920, in Baltimore, a son of Joseph A. and Mary Irene Brown. He was married June 12, 1942, in Baltimore, to Eliese D. Itzel, who survives.

He graduated in 1938 from Calvert Hall and in 1942 from Loyola College of Maryland in Baltimore, where he was a founding member of Zeta Eta Theta fraternity. He and his wife moved to the Lake of the Ozarks from Kansas City in 1977.

He retired in 1980 as a captain for Trans World Airlines after a 38-year career. He was assigned to the Kansas City domicile in 1945.

He was a member of Shrine of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Laurie, the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher and the Knights of Columbus Council 10381. He was a 4th Degree member of the Bishop J.M. Marling Assembly 2111 of Camdenton.

He was past commodore of the Lake of the Ozarks Yachting Association; a member of Save A Connie Inc., VFW Post 5923, American Legion Post 624 of Sunrise Beach and the International Order of the Blue Gavel; and a charter member of Missouri Ozarks Power Squadron District 30 and B.P.O.E. Lodge 2705.

Other survivors include: six sons, Joseph A. Brown III, Floyds Knobs, Ind.; George M. Brown, Meridian, Miss.; Christopher L. Brown, Kansas City; J. Richard Brown, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; Donald F. Brown, Overland Park, Kan.; and Gerald K. Brown, Kansas City, Kan.; one daughter, Peggy B. Davis, Butler, Pa.; two brothers, James I. Brown and J. Michael Brown, both of the Baltimore area; two sisters, Irene Brown Caughy and Sarah B. Whipple, both of the Baltimore area; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Shrine of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to Calvert Hall College in Baltimore or the Knights of Columbus Council 10381 Widow and Children's Fund, Laurie.

Arrangements are under the direction of Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home, Laurie.

GOOD

Lenke Good, 79,  Jefferson City, died May 5, 1999, at her home.

She was born April 1, 1920, in Carteret, N.J., a daughter of Albert and Rosalie Bartha Bertha. She was married Sept. 5, 1947, in Baltimore City, Md., to Thomas Good, who survives.

She was a graduate of Bedford Park Academy in Carteret, N.J. She was a supervisor with the U.S. Post Office in Bronx, N.Y., for many years before retiring in 1983.

She was a member of the Hungarian Reformed Church.

Private services will be held at Houser-Millard Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.

ATCHLEY

Carole Lynn Atchley, 65, Roach, died May 8, 1999, at St. Luke Hospital, Kansas City.

She was born Sept. 20, 1933, in Kansas City, a daughter of Paul and Edith Maxine Gillis Stenzel. She was married Jan. 30, 1955, in Kansas City, to Boyd Atchley, who survives at the home.

She was a resident of Lenexa, Kan., for 25 years. She was manager of a pump equipment company and a secretary of the Pilots Club, both in Lenexa, until her retirement, when she moved to the Lake area.

She was a member of Community Christian Church, Camdenton, where she served as an elder and worship chairman. She was a past president of the Millstone Wheelers.

Other survivors include: two sons, David William Atchley, Austin, Texas , and Douglas James Atchley, Olathe, Kan.; one daughter, Dana Lynn Foster, Houston, Texas ; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Community Christian Church, Camdenton. The Rev. Tracy Carroll will officiate.

Memorials are suggested to Community Christian Church, Camdenton.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hedges Funeral Home, Camdenton.

DURHAM

Cathryn Case Durham, 82,  Jefferson City, died May 8, 1999, at Villa Marie Skilled Nursing Facility.

She was born Feb. 27, 1917, in  Jefferson City, a daughter of John T. and Nancy Mae Green Taylor. She was married in 1939 to William Harold Case, who died Feb. 14, 1987. She was married in  Jefferson City to Wilford "Clay" Durham, who died Feb. 1, 1990.

She was employed at the Missouri Department of Agriculture for 20 years. She attended First Christian Church and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include: three sons, William "Bill" Case and Pat Case, both of  Jefferson City, and Randy Case, Holts Summit; two brothers, William Taylor, Kansas City, and Rolla Taylor, Wichita, Kan.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Houser-Millard Funeral Home. The Rev. Chris Cordes will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon-2 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorials are suggested to the Samaritan Center, the Helias Foundation or to the Bethesda Lutheran Home, 700 Hoffman Dr., Watertown, Wis. 53094.

FULKERSON

Dr. Frank Fulkerson, D.P.M., 83,  Jefferson City, died May 8, 1999, at Capital Region Medical Center.

He was born April 27, 1916, in Tipton, a son of Frank G. and Audrey Ross Worley Fulkerson. He was married Nov. 22, 1980, in  Jefferson City, to Mildred Fromme-Brown, who survives at the home.

He was a 1934 graduate of  Jefferson City High School and attended  Jefferson City Junior College and the University of Kansas City. He received a medical degree in podiatry from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine, graduating cum laude.

He was in private practice as a podiatrist in Chillicothe, Columbia and  Jefferson City, retiring in 1988. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1941-1946, obtaining the rank of first lieutenant.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and its executive board. He was a member of the Cole County Historical Society, the Mid-Missouri Genealogical Society, the American Podiatric Society and the Washington County Veterans Historical Society. He was a life member of the Missouri Podiatric Society, for which he served on the state board as secretary for many years.

Other survivors include: one son, Scott Fulkerson, Dallas, Texas ; one daughter, Kim Forbis, Casper, Wyo.; four step-daughters, Daveelu Boone,  Jefferson City, Carol Klug-Loges, Grain Valley, Debara Burkey, Greenville, Tenn., and Sheri Jablonowski, Riesel, Texas ; one step-sister, Betty Crawford, Cloud Croft, N.M.; three grandsons, 13 step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Directors,  Jefferson City Chapel, with the Rev. E. Gene Rooney officiating. Entombment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery Mausoleum.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Directors.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church.
