GROVES
Larry James Groves, 50, Raleigh, N.C., died July 24, 1999, at his home.
He was born
Feb. 28, 1949, in Mexico, a son of Kenneth J. and Delpha Blackburn Groves. His mother survives in Mexico. He was married
March 11, 1978, in Moberly, to Gerry Kean, who survives at the home.
A Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, he worked as a calibration technician at the Fulton Nuclear Plant. He then transferred to Raleigh, where he lived for the past 14 years.
He was a member of the Catholic Church.
Other survivors include: two stepsons, L. Wayne Smith, state of Texas, and Shawn Chapin, Raleigh; one stepdaughter, LaDonna Smith, Raleigh; three brothers, Gordon Groves, Auxvasse, Randy Groves, Mexico, and Winston Groves, New Haven, Ind.; one sister, Wanda Garnett, Coffeyville, Kan.; and five step grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Louis Catholic Church, Bonnots Mill. The Rev. George Kramer will officiate. Burial will be in St. Louis Catholic Cemetery, Bonnots Mill.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Arnold Funeral Home, Mexico.
Memorials are suggested to St. Louis Catholic Cemetery.
OESTERLY
Lorene R. Oesterly, 91, California, died July 24, 1999, at Moniteau Care Center, California.
She was born
July 28, 1907, in Cedron, a daughter of Henry J. and Emma Susan Harris Baker. She was married
Sept. 26, 1928, in California, to Walter H. Oesterly, who died Feb. 18, 1967.
She graduated from Harlan School in Moniteau County and was a homemaker. She was a member of California United Church of Christ and the Neighborhood Quilting Club.
Survivors include: three sons, Ronald Oesterly, California, and Charles Oesterly and Gary Oesterly, both of Jefferson City; one brother, Robert Baker, California; one sister, Hester Francis, California; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Paul Oesterly, who died April 30, 1997, and two grandsons.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home, California. The Rev. Gary Schulte and Peter Becker will officiate. Burial will be in Evangelical Cemetery, California.
Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday.
Memorials are suggested to California United Church of Christ, 101 N. Oak St., California, Mo., or to a charity of the donor's choice.
BERRY
Melva Barrett Hughes Berry, 87, Versailles, July 26, 1999, in Columbia.
She was born
Nov. 30, 1911, in Versailles, a daughter of James H. and Mary A. Polston Hughes. She was married
May 1, 1932, to William F. Berry Jr., who preceded her in death.
She lived in Versailles all her adult life.
Survivors include: one daughter, Diane Berry O'Hagan, Columbia; one son William F. Berry, Columbia; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Calvary Episcopal Church, Columbia.
Visitation will follow the service in the parish hall. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Versailles Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Habitat for Humanity or Rainbow House.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Funeral Service, Columbia.
CARDWELL
Bonnie Lee Cardwell, 71, Jefferson City, died July 25, 1999, at Capital Region Medical Center.
She was born
June 12, 1928, in California, a daughter of Sterling C. and Elsie Mae Barnhart Davenport. She was married
Nov. 23, 1946, in Kansas City, to Cleet Cardwell, who died Nov. 22, 1991.
She attended was a graduate of Jefferson City High School. She was a member of the Methodist church. She had been employed at Oberman Pants Factory and International Shoe Company until her retirement.
Survivors include: two sons, Sidney Thomas Cardwell and Stephen Sterling Cardwell, both of Jefferson City; one brother, Leonard Davenport, Springdale, Ark.; one sister, Jane Randazzo Schupp, Jefferson City; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Buescher Memorial Home. The Rev. Michael Coleman will officiate. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today.
Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.
GARDNER
Grace Elizabeth Gardner, 83, Aurora, formerly of Jefferson City, died July 24, 1999, at her home.
She was born
May 23, 1916, in Aurora, a daughter of James C. and Ida Branch Patteson Gardner.
She graduated from Aurora High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Southwest Missouri State University.
She received her masters of education and her doctorate of education from the University of Missouri.
She taught elementary school for eight years and high school for one year.
She taught at Southwest Missouri State University's Greenwood Laboratory School from 1946 until her retirement in1983.
She was a member of United Methodist Church of Aurora, Missouri Association of Student Councils, Lawrence County Senior Tax Board, Lawrence County Commission of the Handicapped Tax Board and Retired Teachers Association. She was active with many organizations, including Springfield-Greene County League of Women Voters, Missouri State Teachers Association, United Nations Association and Missouri Silver Haired Legislature.
She is survived by two nephews, Joe Bowman, Springfield, and Gary Holder, Monett.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Home, Aurora.
Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, Aurora's Harmony House or Scholarship Fund of United Methodist Church, Aurora.
LINCOLN
Mary Kay Purkhiser Lincoln, 51, Glenwood, Iowa, died July 26, 1999, at her home.
She was born
Oct. 19, 1947, in Seymour, Ind., a daughter of James C. and Polly Sue Elrod Purkhiser. Her parents survive in Morehead, Ky. She was married
June 26, 1966, in North Vernon, Ind., to Richard Lee "Dick" Lincoln, who survives at the home.
A former resident of the states of Kansas, Missouri, Indiana and Nebraska, she had lived in Glenwood for the past 10 years. She was a homemaker and a medical secretary for Dr. Robert Fryzek for eight years.
She was a member of the C.W.F. of First Christian Church, Glenwood, and the Care and Share Buffet. She volunteered for Hospice, coordinated Meals on Wheels and was a Love Tree assistant.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Kelly Hopp, Glenwood, and Kristen Burdette, Jefferson City; one son, Jeff Lincoln, Sioux Falls, S.D.; two brothers, Tom Purkhiser, Woodinville, Wash., and Paul Purkhiser, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Glenwood. The Rev. Grant Wiley and Darrell Hopp will officiate. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Peterson Mortuary, Glenwood.
SETTLE
Lucine B. Settle, 88, Jefferson City, died July 17, 1999, at Oak View Living Center.
She was born
Oct. 16, 1910, in Osage County, a daughter of Robert A. and Nellie Bonnot Benson. She was married
in 1930, in Jefferson City, to Ed Vieth, who preceded her in death. She was married
in 1967, in Jefferson City, to Cecil Roberts, who preceded her in death. She was married
July 6, 1977, in Jefferson City, to James Elbert Settle, who died Jan. 20, 1988.
A graduate of Jefferson City High School, she was employed at the Missouri Power and Light Co. for 30 years until her retirement. She was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral, the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star, Memorial Community Hospital Auxiliary and Osage County Historical Society.
Survivors include one son, Robert H. Vieth, Lake Ozark, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Buescher Memorial Home. The Rev. Christopher Cordes will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimers Association.
SMALL
Kelly C. Small, 85, Eldon, died July 25, 1999, at St. Marys Health Center.
He was born
May 19, 1914, in Tuscumbia, a son of Thomas H. and Minta Lenora Goodrick Small. He was married
to Dortha M. Small, who preceded him in death. He was married
March 27, 1988, in Manchester, to Virginia Morgan, who survives at the home.
He attended Central Missouri State Teachers College where he earned his teaching certificate. He was a farmer. He also co-owned Admire/Small Bulldozing Co. He was a charter member and deacon of Ninth Street Christian Church.
Other survivors include: two sons, Daniel Kelly Small, Concordia, and Gary Clay Small, Richmond; one daughter, Darlene May Ferguson, Eldon; two stepsons, James Morgan, Jefferson City, and Mike Morgan, Dixon; three stepdaughters, Carol Morgan , Columbia, Kathleen Norment, Powder Springs, Ga., and Marilyn Jenkins, Eugene; one sister, Glenna Harryman, Louisville, Ky.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; 10 step-grandchildren and 15 step great-grandchildren.
One grandson also preceded him in death.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ninth Street Christian Church. Roy Weece will officiate. Burial will be in Eldon City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.
Memorials are suggested to Ninth Street Christian Church Building Fund.
DURHAM
Martha Jane Beck Durham, 75, Jefferson City, died July 25, 1999, at Capital Healthcare Center.
She was born
Sept. 15, 1923, in Joplin, a daughter of Harry A. Sr. and Martha I. Weyland Beck. She was married
June 21, 1942, in Jefferson City, to John Joseph Durham, who survives at the home.
She was a 1941 graduate of Jefferson City High School. She was a homemaker and member of the Lutheran church.
Other survivors include: one son, James L. Durham, St. Louis; one daughter, Jennifer Durham Riks, Jefferson City; one sister, Margaret Dary, Federal Way, Wash.; and two grandsons.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Houser-Millard Funeral Home. The Rev. John Hobratschk will officiate. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Sunday.
